Talk about metamorphisis. This thread about The Crow seems to have evolved
from a macabre book to the Movie with Jason Lee. Is there a connection, or are
there poeple jumping into the middle of a conversation? LATER-

P.S.--Has this been asked: Would DT try a CD-ROM (a la Queensryche)? It may
give us a ll a better understanding of their images and words.

    Hey everyone!

Guess what I got last night? Images and Words! Yes! Finally! Wait...
um, I mean Images and Words: Live in Tokyo.

I asked my local video store to order it for me two months ago, but I
walked into MusicLand last night and there it was! So, I bought it.

Wow! This was my first chance to SEE Dream Theater since KJL and MP were
on HBB months ago. It's kinda wierd actually seing them. After seeing
JM play Ytsejam (it's kinda hard to hear all the parts on WDADU), I don't
think I'll be learning it too soon. Yeesh.

It's too bad the mix and JL's voice were a little off for the first song
(UaGM, my favorite) but things got much better. I still haven't seen the
whole thing. I was dissappionted with one thing: No Metropolis!! Aaaugh!

On a final note, I saw Dokken Monday night in Millwaukee. They were
pretty good, but the mix was terrible. Pilson's bass drowned out
everything. Can you imagine that? A guitar oriented band like that, and
they drown out Lynch with the bass? Yech. DD sounded pretty good, and
Lynch was incredible. He cut his hair. He's got kind of a bowl/mop cut
kind of thing going on now. It made him look 15 years younger.

    Well, gotta go.

If any one's interested, I caught the June 30 Queensryche show here in good ole' Raleigh, NC, and for those QR fans out there who haven't caught it yet, you're in for a treat. I wasn't that crazy about Type-O opening up for them, and I was even less thrilled with them after I heard them live. But, I got there a little late and only had to sit through about 4 songs. They weren't who I went to see anyway. Geoff Tate was in top form that night, and no one else ever missed a beat. Those guys put on a show like you would not believe. They did all of PL, over 65% of O:M, and a nifty medley of I think three songs off of RFO and included about half of NM 156 in there before diving into Screaming in Digital, along with Take Hold of the Flame, Real World, and three songs off of Empire. I know that for a lot of people PL was curiously disappointing, that it "just doesn't sound like QR" but I beg to differ. I had the notion that it was a sequel to O:M and the concert proved it. The main character, the persona which Geoff assumed and who was the subject of PL was revealed to be Nikki from O:M, and it picked up right where O:M left off. This may be old news to many of you, so I'll leave it at that, except for one comment: TOTALLY F*****G AWESOME!!!!!!!

That aside, I've been off for a while and have missed a few Ytse's, so I ahve a couple of possibly redundant questions.

    1) Am I to understand that the DT EP will be out in September? 2) Does DT _ever_ play the Southeast, and if so, will they be coming around soon?

For anyone with the answers to the above, I would be really grateful.

Sorry for such a lengthy post!!

Hey I want to thank everybody for all the info on Rush and the other prog bands. I haven't got any Rush stuff yet, but I did get ELP's Brain Salad Surgery. It's great! Thanks!

Also Kevin Moore is my favorite DT(ex) guy. Ii think he is most talented in lyric writting, song writing and just looking cool. I wish him luck in his new musical voyage.

The last song on WDADU in the last 45 seconds is killer. And it keeps getting even better and better as it goes on. Then the last 10 seconds is the most spectacular ending I have ever heard in any song! It rules!

first of all, carmina burana isn't an opera, its just choral songs. you might want to check out orff's other stuff, cantulli carmina, trionfo de (or some other word like that) afrodite... possibly prokofiev's alexander nevsky. i dont know of a whole lot of choral works like that... if you're looking for something real rhythmic try stravinsky's rite of spring... if you're looking for something truly bizarre get ancient voices of children by george crumb.

and everyone should get crumb's black angels. kronos quartet recorded it, but i prefer the brodsky quartet version on teldec with schubert's death and the maiden (may be listed under der tod und das madchen). you may have to order it but for a truly frightening musical experience, black angels cant be beat.

CYGNUS CD PROJECT UPDATE / SUBCONSCIOUS CONCLUSION ACOUSTIC DREAMS UPDATE current to 7/5/95

This is an update on the status of orders and such things on the Rush "Cygnus" CD... made available exclusively to the members of the Ytsejam list before anybody else. :)

EVEN QUICKER UPDATE: I am in a position to produce it immediately upon the receipt of my supplies order. Thanks guys! I'm going to spend the interim getting Acoustic Dreams together.

Here's the no-wait address and cost. Read on for further info on the CD.

$23 check, money order, or cashier's check/traveler's cheque to: Michael Bahr 3175 N. Price Rd. #1066 Chandler, AZ 85224 PLEASE SPECIFY that it's Cygnus you want. I do a lot of mailing and may not realize what it is that's being purchased.

QUICKIE UPDATE: Because of how long it's taken my supplier (who assures me the CDs will be on their way *real soon now*, I've done a redundant order with an out-of- state company. Whichever gets here first, that's what I use. This time, I know what I'm doing, so I'll have a lot of shipments ready-to-go when the CDs are out of the gate, so to speak.

ACOUSTIC DREAMS: Also known as Dream Theater Unplugged. I have begun work on this already and will begin taking orders for it shortly, possibly when the shipments of Cygnus are in (why have two pre-order things going at once...) or earlier if you all want. More info on this CD in a moment.

SUBCONSCIOUS: The CDs are finally _gone_. Every copy has been sold. For those of you who are still waiting to get yours, I'm sending them out the day I get the order, so they should be there very very soon. :) I've even sold my own personal extra copies. I can't believe this was so popular!

Now that the CD supply is dry, expect resale prices of the Subconscious disc to go up fast. I would hope nobody plans to purposefully soak would-be buyers with acquired inventory (which is one reason nobody was able to buy more than five of the discs, as a limit) but you can expect that there will be a certain amount of value gained, with it being limited edition, hand-numbered, etc.

Will Subconscious ever be made again? Unless some Italian company copies it, I am sorry to say it will not. One of the explicit conditions I set forth when I made the disc was that it would be very special and limited, and I would be breaking my confidence with the people who have bought it under the understanding it would be a unique, rare release. I swear I don't mean to make people miss out... but a promise is a promise. Would people trust me when I say "get it now" if they could get it a year later? I calculate not. :)

THANKS EVERYONE for being a part of this! You all RULE! :)

DISCLAIMER: Cygnus falls into a grey area under law as an uncopyrighted recording produced in such a manner that at least one facet of the production occurs in a country (namely Italy) in which it is legal to do so. In the USA, it is permissible to sell used import CDs only if they are labeled as such. This is such a CD. Be aware that the various powers-that-be are collecting nothing for this.

Of course, that's all cover-my-butt lawyerspeak. I hope you all will want to be a part of this. I make roughly minimum wage doing it, so you know I'm not out to scam you. In all humility, I appeal to anyone who might not think too kindly of my endeavor, and ask that they might give me the benefit of the doubt on this one. Friends? :)

    1. What the hell is Cygnus? 2. When can I order and how? 3. For that matter, what the hell is Acoustic Dreams? 4. Orders received. =============================================================================

    1. What the hell is Cygnus?

Hi all, I'm Mike Bahr, humble maker of special edition CDs. Earlier this year, in an effort that is still ongoing, I made available a special, _very_ limited edition Dream Theater CD called Subconscious. I didn't know if the project would work at all, since I had to use my own money to finance the project, and had to be very close on costs to even make it a non-loss financially. But you responded, Ytsejammers!

The CD sold, sold, and sold some more. In fact, the entire limited edition print of 500 copies, each hand-numbered and signed in gold by myself, sold out entirely to you, the most devoted fans of Dream Theater on earth.

And I do mean _Earth_! I got orders from the USA, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Austria, Great Britain, Ireland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Israel, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, Greece, and a few more countries I am sure I have forgotten to mention. Truly, the WORLD made Subconscious a success for me and for the Jam, so I'm going to hope that Cygnus will be another one! My heart goes out to all of you in every country of the world for joining in!

What I did was work with a pressing plant using rental equipment and some of my own as well, and an exhausting three months of preparation, packaging, and mailing, not to mention production of the CD, and a million other things, and made it a reality. I was relieved beyond words when I read the positive comments people had for it online.

Cygnus is the project I will do to fill the gap between Spring 1995's Subconscious and Autumn 1995's WHEN DREAM AND JAMES UNITE. Cygnus will be a recording from an ultra-rare Rush show, the single best sounding Rush show in existence, from the mystical Hemispheres tour of 1978-79. I will only print 1000 copies... beyond that, there shall be no more.

This time, the first 150 copies will be hand-signed and marked for collector value, to add to the "specialness" of the CD, but the rest will be equally rare anyway, so expect this to be a true gem in your collection.

Here's the information on the show.

Title: Rush "Cygnus" Source: True soundboard reel-to-reel, original length 81 min Running time: 73 min Venue: Convention Center Arena (TCC Arena) Location: Tucson, Arizona Date: November 20, 1978 Generation: Transferred to 48kHz DAT from a 2nd gen analog. Quality: Beyond comparison. Higher than "Oakland '92" and "Pinkpop".

Setlist: Anthem A Passage to Bangkok By-Tor and the Snow Dog Xanadu Something for Nothing The Trees Cygnus X-1 Book 1: The Voyage Cygnus X-1 Book 2: Hemispheres I. Prelude II. Apollo III. Dionysus IV. Armageddon V. Cygnus VI. The Sphere Circumstances A Farewell to Kings

Note that La Villa Strangiato had to be cut or else I couldn't fit the Cygnus saga on the CD! I'm sorry about that, I hope it won't kill the experience for anybody.

Also on the original tape was a cut-off version of the beginning of 2112, the Overture and then half of the Temples section. In order to make Cygnus fit onto a single CD, I cut those seven minutes out of the DAT. Everyone has a live 2112 on ATWAS album, anyway.

Now that I sort of "have the hang of it" where CDs are concerned, I will be trying to put together some colorful art for the CD and cover. For those who didn't get one, Subconscious had a gold-on-black motif, much like the Terminator-2 and Star Wars laserdisc box-sets. It was dignified, and direct. And now, for Cygnus, I want to really make people say "wow!" The cover is pretty wicked looking, I'll try and post a copy.

    2. Where can I order and how?

Okay, here's the deal. Anyone remember how long it took my blanks shipment to get to me when I did Subconscious? Twenty-nine days, it did. And I placed the order for Cygnus blanks a few weeks ago. Used a faster supplier. Now, this time, I originally had planned not to even ANNOUNCE Cygnus until I had the CDs in hand. However, so many of you are leaving for the summer and/or want early copies like last time, that I will go ahead and do a pre- order deal again.

Why, you may ask, should I send the money, if I won't get the CD for a while, though?

Well, you don't have to. But you can. I strongly urge you to consider it. Here's why.

Here's how it works. I don't want anyone feeling uncomfortable sending me a payment when in all truth, your CD might take a month to get to you. So I will divulge as much information as I can to make it a sound decision on your part. For those who wish to wait, there will be NO penalty; simply order when I get the CDs in shipment. For those who order early, in an effort to reward their confidence in my project and in gratitude for them getting the ball rolling early, I will be shipping CDs out in the order they were received... thus, you'll get it sooner. Furthermore, this time I'm going to run a little contest. A random 25 people in the first 300 orders (this will be done with a computer randomizer) will get a free copy of a special video montage, just as an added bonus and a thank-you for being a part of this. I think I might make two or three different montages and throw them in at random into the sets... one Rush, one Dream Theater, one Live, one Queensryche and maybe one of all sorts of progressive bands. Or more! :)

    How to order!!!

Remember when Subconscious came out, and I said certain costs were permanent, and had gone into the production cost? I didn't lie... Cygnus will be CHEAPER than Subconscious was. The price will be $23. For anyone in Canada ordering, add only $1 for postage. For anyone outside North America, add $2 for postage (so it would be the same price as Sub) and that will take care of it. There's a lot of bean-counting that I do to come up with those numbers, so trust me, it's what it amounts to. Plus, you can order as MANY Cygnus discs as you want, because you on the Jam are getting a shot at it before I offer it anywhere else.

Please use a money order if you can. The reason is simple: it's safe! I know you paid and you know I have it (it's traceable). And you know if you don't get a CD or a refund, I'll go to jail.

For international orders, I will indeed accept cash if you wish. I urge you to be careful, because every order for Subconscious that contained cash made it safely to me, but that might not always be the case. I don't want anybody to lose their money. For orders of 2 or more Cygnus discs, a travellers cheque or international money order is economical to use. If you decide to use cash, please wrap it tight in a thick envelope and try to hide it, so that nobody will steal it.

Please allow 6-8 weeks for delivery. It will actually be closer to 4 or 4 and a half weeks, but in order to be safe, I'm giving you the extreme possibility. Understand that, as with Subconscious, I'll be making every effort to get them sent fast and soon. And now, I know a few things I can be doing to get them done faster than I did with Sub... like pre-making the mailing lists, supplies, process, etc.

    Here's what to do.

Send your payment, along with your Name, Address to ship it to, Internet email address (in case I need to contact you), how MANY CDs you want, and, optionally, your phone number. I say optionally, because I know some of you want to keep them unlisted.

Send all this to: Michael Bahr 3175 N. Price Rd. #1066 Chandler, AZ 85224 (USA)

If you wish to speak to me for any reason, including questions, comments, suggestions, or you just want to chat with another dedicated fan of Rush and Dream Theater, you are very welcome to call me at 1-602-777-0501. I am usually home between 11am and 9pm Mountain Standard Time. Please use this phone number with proper discretion, however, as I will be very confused if you call me at 3:00 in the morning.

    3. What the hell is Acoustic Dreams?

Well, this is the next CD I'm doing, also known as Dream Theater Unplugged. We were given a VERY high-quality soundboard tape of DT's recent Unplugged performance in Europe, and it can only be fully expressed in the form of a CD. Trust me. :)

When can you order AD? Very soon, probably as soon as I get the materials in for Cygnus, so I can have two concurrent releases. I'm working on acquiring materials for it already. This will make me nearly broke this summer, but I've pre-paid my rent, and I can live without food for awhile. :) (yes, I'm exaggerating, but not by much. Time to run the first ever Ytsejam Canned Food Drive! ha!)

Here's the tentative tracklisting from Acoustic Dreams...

    1. Another Day (laid-back version) 2. Lifting Shadows off a Dream (IMHO, far better than the album version) 3. Wait For Sleep (acoustic GUITAR on this one, no piano!) 4. The Silent Man 5. Lie (boogie version) - this is really a trip to hear 6. Tears (Rush cover, done acoustically, very beautiful) 7. O Holy Night

The thing is, there is only about 45 minutes of stuff there. I wish I could put Acoustic Dreams and WDAJU together, but WDAJU will be around 70 minutes. I'm looking for any other acoustic DT material you all might have... remember, leave out the acoustic To Live Forever since that was on the Subconscious CD. I may just put some other soundboard goodies on the tape, even if they are electric, such as the Perfect Strangers cover where Bruce Dickinson sings on it, or perhaps some covers gig material that isn't on the A Change of Seasons EP. (I wish we had a TRACKLIST!!!) I think the latter idea would be the best, but I don't know if we'll be able to do it.

One way or another, more music is going to be added to Acoustic Dreams, as much as I can acquire collectible material for it.

    4. Orders received.

This time, I'm in the thick of finishing the Sub project, and Cygnus is coming along just dandy as well... and I will be able to confirm that an order was received if you email me about it. I won't be posting a long list to the Jam because of complaints I received about the Sub listing.

For the most part, all orders usually get through. If you want to confirm yours PERSONALLY, feel free to do so, via email or voice.

Well that about wraps it up for this update of the CYGNUS CD project. Everyone be excellent to each other, and party on dudes!

    To keep the thread going.....

I'd have to say my favorite member of DT is James. It was after hearing him singing with DT that I became a fan.

violinist is Nigel Kennedy. He just kicks. As far as composers go, I like Bach, Scarlatti, and Holst (The Planets...ahhh). Anyway, that's who I like. My fave DT persona, hmm..., let me see. That's a tough one. I like them all equal. The way they play together is great. I do geve special note to Kevin Moore's keyboard playing, though. I used to not like lots of keys all that much, but he changed my mind on that. Oh well, we'll miss him (in DT, that is. I hope his solo stuff kicks). Later.

Dangit, you're making me search my poor brain cell for the proof of information that I've got floating around in my mind! My memory is like a computer's - eventually I run out of room, and have to deIete old stuff to make way for the new! Someone else confirmed that she was Canadian a post or two ago - speak up, you, so I remember your name!

    Quoth Andras:

    >Is that true,that they will release again the Streets?And with 26 >songs? I can't believe this.I just can't believe.It's amazing! And >when will it happen?

So I've heard. No absolute confirmation, but I'll keep my ears open. When, I don't know...

    Quoth Eddie:

    >The woman that was in the Queensryche video (for >their cover of "Gonna Get Close To You") was NOT Dal Bello >herself but a former Miss Argentina (don't know which year >she was crowned, though).

So I was right about the Canadian part, but if Lisa DalBello is black, I guess that _would_ rule her out as being the woman in the video! Like I said, I'll check and see if I can come up with any specifics. I would've sworn I had read somewhere that it was DalBello herself. So I was wrong - eh bien. When I saw DT in Utrecht a year or so ago, the sound wasn't too good: too much bass and drums, and not enough guitar and keys. The funny thing is that the sound was awful close to the stage, but it was excellent at the back of the hall. Move around a bit, and see whether you prefer a good view at the guys but muddy sound, or great sound and a good view at the lightshow, the crowd and *maybe* of the band.

Greetings everyone, it's BABS. I was going to try to stay away from this one topic, but I can't. I admit it - James is my favorite member, but I feel so bad saying that because how can you pick a favorite? Just think how any of us would feel if our parents did that with us. Can you imagine somebody asking "so which is your favorite child". That's how I kind of feel about this topic. How can you pick a favorite - they are all so wonderful, special and unique!

    -BABS

BTW, that's why I'm only going to have my daughter and no other children. Are there any Ytsejammer's who are doctors (giggle)? Somebody slap the clamps on me - no more children. I know that this is my most bizarre post ever, but those of you who are close to me know what all of this is about. Take care everybody and have a wonderful weekend!

Seems to be a serious problem indeed. I was told by a friend (who never had heard something of DT) that at the "Lueneburg open air" this year there had been these "Dream-something-or-so-guys" of whom he couldn't hear anything but "these mad drums".

    bye, MiWo
