Geez, can't a busy guy just lurk?! Seriously, first off, thanks to Brian
for the kind words. Secondly....too many bands, too little time if you
know what I mean. Thirdly......I actually have some juicy bits o' info for
you regrding Dream Theater; they have just completed an EP with the song "A

I was crusing down the street the other day when I came upon a
red light. Sitting at this red light, I noticed a DT promotional sign on
a telephone pole. I was amazed that it was still there. The sign was
advertising a show that never happened almost two years ago!!! I thought
wow, I should grab that sign, but then I thought, it would be better to
leave the sign in place for all to see. Now I make a special point to let
all of my buddies know that the sign is there

It was strange at that show because right before they started that song..Derek
just got up and left the stage. I thought that something happened (like
something that was thrown hit him or something like that) but they just started
playing without him...I guess he didnt know the song or something. It did
show one thing though...how important keyboards are to DT's sound. The song
was definitely hurt because it had no keyboards. But I was relieved when he
came back out for the next song.

    Forgot to mention this:

Dream Theater has now done what we (or I, anyway) thought they would never
do: Put a curse word in a song. Yep, James shouts a big, fat F--K in the
middle (one of several "middles") of ACoS. Not that that's bad or anything .
. . . I just wasn't expecting it. Derek went and turned it down so we
couldn't hear it while it was playing. But hey, REWIND!! And there it was,
    in all its vulgar splendor!!

    Enough already!

I just received a call from one of my friends in Germany and he told me about
an AD he saw for a DT show. The reason he called me is because i will be going
over to Europe for 2 weeks and was wondering if I wanted to go. Now since
he is from the US he is unsure of the location of the town. The Ad stated
that the DT show is in Lichtenfels on the 21st of June at 8:00. Now
what i would like to know is, where is this town located. My friend looked
at a map and found two of them!!! One was near Frankfurt and the other was
North of Erlangen. I would appreciate any help that anyone can give me, since
i would love to see this show!!! I would love to see the best band in the world
in a different country than my own!! It would be so intense. Thanks in
    advance.

I'm glad to hear that DT have changed ACOS. I never was blown away by
the version on DoE like most people. That version lacks cohesion and
does not have a main theme. I'm looking forward to hearing the new
version. I'm sure it has improved. Could others who attended the
YTSECON please post their impression of the new ACOS? Bye for now...

I was listening to I&W the other day, and when JP is playing the intro,
it sounded to me as though he had played the track on his Ibanez and then
retracked it with an acoustic guitar. Is this the case? Did he double
    track with his Ibanez?
I just got my copy of Awake (yes only two days ago) and it is brilliant.
Can anyone tell me if they will use David Prater on the upcoming fourth
    album?

As one who nearly always finds some other word to describe whatever
feeling that's being evoked, I find myself wondering when ANY artist
believes it's necessary to use obscenities in their work. Again, its
just a matter of style/taste/opinion, but I, myself, find it at least
    slightly distressing.

in risk of being "off the deep end" as dr mosh suggested, i wanted to see
what you guys thought of this:

I had an idea this weekend i wanted to run by everyone. Since so many
bands are starting to allow audio and/or video taping at their shows, i
was thinking "how can we persuade dt to allow taping?". anyway, i thought
i would run this by everyone: we all add up how many bootleg cds we own
(just cds) and send the results to someone (me, for instance), and i will
add all of the totals up, and multiply by the average cd price, $23, say,
and come up with a grand figure of how much the bootlegging industry has
made off of all of us. then, i will take all of the results and send them
to dt's management and label, with a petition from everyone. in this
petition will be as many names as i can get of people that think a taping
section for dt would be a good thing. you dont have to want to tape your-
self, just think that it would be better for the general tape trading
community. any other thoughts/arguments will also be forwarded to dt's
    mgmt.

my goal is to persuade them to at least sell a few audio taper tickets
for each show, i.e. grateful dead, phish, page/plant, queensryche, but
unlimited audio and/or video would be great, too. but, i think that
unlimited taping *would* be a bad idea, with people setting up stuff
everywere, getting in each other's way, etc. a real taping section right
behind the soundboard would be best.

anyway, i will set up an address right now for everyone to mail.

    mail to: dreamtaper@tamu.edu

    include this:

the total # of bootleg cd's that i own:
the # of dream theater bootleg cd's that i own:
the # of "official" dream theater cds that i own (imports/singles count):
i would be interested in purchasing taper tickets for dt (yes/no/why):
i would buy less bootleg cds if taping was allowed (yes/no/why):
    any additional comments:

Just back home from seeing the boys "Live on Long Island" -- what a fackin
*excellent* time ... not just meeting and chatting it up with Mike, John
and Derek (who hasn't changed one bit in 11 years!), but also meeting some
of the fellow jammers on this list.

First off, *Endless* kudos to Babs -- she is a goddess!! Thanks a trillion
for pulling this ytsecon coup off.

Brian did a pretty accurate job of detailing the evenings events, so I won't
    rehash that. Fav moments?

    - Hearing the studio version of ACOS -- I love it, much better than the boots
    - The preview of the Ronnie Scotts tape mixdown
    - The Mike P inverview (I assume this will be transcribed to the net?!)
    - learning it was Mike who stole the "E19" sign from Berklee 8^)
    - the auction for the rare DT euro posters (you see, Babs, I didn't win one as
      foretold to you!!).
    - Brian running "70s music trivia from Hell"

Mike P *hinted* at Ytsecon *possibly* becoming an annual event (just
quoting him, but want to specifically state it was TOTALLY speculative on
his behalf -- don't start getting your hopes up too much, folks!).

I'm sorry for the Ytsejammers not located in the northeast who were unable
to attend. I hate to sound negative, but I highly doubt that a "ytsecon"
event WITH members of DT in attendence would be possible -- their schedules
are *very* tight!!! I think the fact that 4/5's of DT live within a 30
minute drive from the Smithtown Sheraton played a HUGE factor in their
    attendence at the event!!

I'm not sure if anyone made specific mention of this, but the two NYC-area
shows next week (Birchhill in NJ and the Malibu on LI) are the ONLY U.S.
dates -- for now. These shows will be done before they head for Europe.
Mike also mentioned they would be debuting the new version of ACOS at the
show, and mentioned they would be changing the set list around for these
dates. PLEASE -- SOMEONE BOOT THESE SHOWS!!!!

    Happy rails, ....

Well, on the question of why DT would use an obscenity/vulgarity/etc
in their music...well sometimes, in order to make deep cerebral
and sometimes metaphysical points, authors/writers will use such
phrases or actions in conveying the meaning. I just saw this
Marlon Brando movie from the early 70
's called "Last Tango in Paris"...and their are certainly plenty
of "vulgar", borderline tasteless scenes in that movie..but it is all
trying to convey a deeper meaning..and sometimes you have to step
back to see the big picture.

CYGNUS CD PROJECT UPDATE / SUBCONSCIOUS CONCLUSION
    current to 6/5/95

This is an update on the status of orders and such things on the
Rush "Cygnus" CD... made available exclusively to the members of the Ytsejam
    list before anybody else. :)

QUICKIE UPDATE: The blanks have been ordered, so we're back in that 29-day
cycle. This time, I know what I'm doing, so I'll have a lot of shipments
ready-to-go when the CDs are out of the gate, so to speak. Every single iota
of work I can get done in advance, will be done in advance. :)

SUBCONSCIOUS: The CDs are finally _gone_. Every copy has been sold. I have
reservations still to be paid for, so if they back out, more copies will be
available.. but for now, they are all apparently gone. For those of you who
are still waiting to get yours, I'm sending them out by and by, and you should
have it soon... I expect the final Subconscious disc to ship in under 2 weeks.
THANKS EVERYONE for being a part of this! You all RULE! :)

DISCLAIMER: Cygnus falls into a grey area under law as an uncopyrighted
recording produced in such a manner that at least one facet of the production
occurs in a country (namely Italy) in which it is legal to do so. In the USA,
it is permissible to sell used import CDs only if they are labeled as such.
This is such a CD. Be aware that the various powers-that-be are collecting
    nothing for this.

Of course, that's all cover-my-butt lawyerspeak. I hope you all will
want to be a part of this. I make roughly minimum wage doing it, so you know
I'm not out to scam you. In all humility, I appeal to anyone who might not
think too kindly of my endeavor, and ask that they might give me the benefit
of the doubt on this one. Friends? :)

    1. What the hell is Cygnus?
    2. When can I order and how?
    3. Orders received.
    =============================================================================

    1. What the hell is Cygnus?

Hi all, I'm Mike Bahr, humble maker of special edition CDs. Earlier
this year, in an effort that is still ongoing, I made available a special,
_very_ limited edition Dream Theater CD called Subconscious. I didn't know
if the project would work at all, since I had to use my own money to finance
the project, and had to be very close on costs to even make it a non-loss
    financially. But you responded, Ytsejammers!

The CD sold, sold, and sold some more. In fact, the entire limited
edition print of 500 copies, each hand-numbered and signed in gold by myself,
sold out entirely to you, the most devoted fans of Dream Theater on earth.

And I do mean _Earth_! I got orders from the USA, Canada, Mexico,
Japan, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Austria, Great Britain, Ireland, Denmark,
the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Israel, Singapore,
Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, Greece, and a few more countries I am sure
I have forgotten to mention. Truly, the WORLD made Subconscious a success for
me and for the Jam, so I'm going to hope that Cygnus will be another one! My
heart goes out to all of you in every country of the world for joining in!

What I did was work with a pressing plant using rental equipment and
some of my own as well, and an exhausting three months of preparation,
packaging, and mailing, not to mention production of the CD, and a million
other things, and made it a reality. I was relieved beyond words when I read
the positive comments people had for it online.

Cygnus is the project I will do to fill the gap between Spring 1995's
Subconscious and Autumn 1995's WHEN DREAM AND JAMES UNITE. Cygnus will be a
recording from an ultra-rare Rush show, the single best sounding Rush show in
existence, from the mystical Hemispheres tour of 1978-79. I will only print
1000 copies... beyond that, there shall be no more.

Here's the information on the show.

    Title: Rush "Cygnus"
Source: True soundboard reel-to-reel, original length 83 min
    Running time: 75 min
Venue: Convention Center Arena (TCC Arena)
    Location: Tucson, Arizona
    Date: November 20, 1978
Generation: Transferred to 44.1kHz DAT from a 2nd gen analog.
Quality: Beyond comparison. Higher than "Oakland '92" and "Pinkpop".

    Setlist:
            Anthem
            A Passage to Bangkok
            By-Tor and the Snow Dog
            Xanadu
            Something for Nothing
            The Trees
Cygnus X-1 Book 1: The Voyage
            Cygnus X-1 Book 2: Hemispheres
                    I. Prelude
                    II. Apollo
                    III. Dionysus
                    IV. Armageddon
                    V. Cygnus
                    VI. The Sphere
            Closer to the Heart
            Circumstances
            A Farewell to Kings
            La Villa Strangiato

Also on the original tape was a cut-off version of the beginning of 2112,
the Overture and then half of the Temples section. In order to make Cygnus
fit onto a single CD, I cut those seven minutes out of the DAT. Everyone
has a live 2112 on ATWAS album, anyway.

Now that I sort of "have the hang of it" where CDs are concerned, I
will be trying to put together some colorful art for the CD and cover. For
those who didn't get one, Subconscious had a gold-on-black motif, much like
the Terminator-2 and Star Wars laserdisc box-sets. It was dignified, and
direct. And now, for Cygnus, I want to really make people say "wow!"

    2. Where can I order and how?

Okay, here's the deal. Anyone remember how long it took my blanks
shipment to get to me when I did Subconscious? Twenty-nine days, it did. And
I plan to place the order for Cygnus at the end of this week. (5/20 or so)
Now, this time, I originally had planned not to even ANNOUNCE Cygnus until
I had the CDs in hand. However, so many of you are leaving for the summer
and/or want early copies like last time, that I will go ahead and do a pre-
    order deal again.

Here's how it works. I don't want anyone feeling uncomfortable sending
me a payment when in all truth, your CD might take a month to get to you. So
I will divulge as much information as I can to make it a sound decision on
your part. For those who wish to wait, there will be NO penalty; simply order
when I get the CDs in shipment. For those who order early, in an effort to
reward their confidence in my project and in gratitude for them getting the
ball rolling early, I will be shipping CDs out in the order they were
received... thus, you'll get it sooner. Furthermore, this time I'm going to
run a little contest. A random ten people in the first 150 orders (this will
be done with a computer randomizer) will get a free copy of a special video
montage, just as an added bonus and a thank-you for being a part of this. I
think I might make two or three different montages and throw them in at
random into the sets... one Rush, one Dream Theater, one Live, one Queensryche
and maybe one of all sorts of progressive bands. Or more! :)

            How to order!!!

Remember when Subconscious came out, and I said certain costs were
permanent, and had gone into the production cost? I didn't lie... Cygnus will
be CHEAPER than Subconscious was. The price will be $23. For anyone in Canada
ordering, add only $1 for postage. For anyone outside North America, add $2
for postage (so it would be the same price as Sub) and that will take care of
it. There's a lot of bean-counting that I do to come up with those numbers,
so trust me, it's what it amounts to. Plus, you can order as MANY Cygnus discs
as you want, because you on the Jam are getting a shot at it before I offer
    it anywhere else.

Please use a money order if you can. The reason is simple: it's safe!
I know you paid and you know I have it (it's traceable). And you know if you
don't get a CD or a refund, I'll go to jail.

For international orders, I will indeed accept cash if you wish. I
urge you to be careful, because every order for Subconscious that contained
cash made it safely to me, but that might not always be the case. I don't
want anybody to lose their money. For orders of 2 or more Cygnus discs,
a travellers cheque or international money order is economical to use. If
you decide to use cash, please wrap it tight in a thick envelope and try to
hide it, so that nobody will steal it.

Please allow 6-8 weeks for delivery. It will actually be closer to
4 or 4 and a half weeks, but in order to be safe, I'm giving you the extreme
possibility. Understand that, as with Subconscious, I'll be making every
effort to get them sent fast and soon. And now, I know a few things I can be
doing to get them done faster than I did with Sub... like pre-making the
    mailing lists, supplies, process, etc.

            Here's what to do.

Send your payment, along with your Name, Address to ship it to, Internet
email address (in case I need to contact you), how MANY CDs you want, and,
optionally, your phone number. I say optionally, because I know some of you
    want to keep them unlisted.

    Send all this to:
                            Michael Bahr
                            3175 N. Price Rd. #1066
                            Chandler, AZ 85224 (USA)

If you wish to speak to me for any reason, including questions, comments,
suggestions, or you just want to chat with another dedicated fan of Rush and
Dream Theater, you are very welcome to call me at 1-602-777-0501. I am
usually home between 11am and 9pm Mountain Standard Time. Please use this
phone number with proper discretion, however, as I will be very confused if
you call me at 3:00 in the morning, or if a bunch of women who thought it was
    a phone-sex line start calling. :)

    3. Orders received.

This time, I'm in the thick of finishing the Sub project, and Cygnus
is coming along just dandy as well... and I will be able to confirm that an
order was received if you email me about it. I won't be posting a long list
to the Jam because of complaints I received about the Sub listing.

For the most part, all orders usually get through. If you want to
confirm yours PERSONALLY, feel free to do so, via email or voice.

Well that about wraps it up for this update of the CYGNUS CD project.
Everyone be excellent to each other, and party on dudes!

I was at work today reading through my DT lyrics when a girl asked
me what I was reading. I told her it was DT lyrics and I got the usual
"Never heard of 'em...". I asked her if she'd like to hear some of what
they were like. We went to my car, where I've got my 6disc changer, 4 of
which are always DT! I played Wait for Sleep and Learning to Live and the
solo for Under a Glass Moon (INCREDIBLE!). She loved it!!!
She said that she'd go out tomorrow and pick up I&W and Awake!
Another DT fan in the making....

By the way...what, how much and where are the Ytsejam shirts? Can I
still get them? Do you accept barter, such as wheat or chickens, as
    payment? (Just kiddin'!)

    Laters and Goodbyes...

    Hello Fellow Jammers,
A few words about the con. AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME.
A couple of friends and I came from Connecticut and we had a
great time. Lots of autographs, pictures, posters, etc... We got
to hear ACOS. The new cut was very interesting but it was very
difficult to hear after a few minutes because of the noise in the
room. Guess we'll have to wait 'till September!! The pictures we
took came out GREAT. Thought I'd just let everyone know how
things went from my perspective. Thanks again BABS and
BTW, how many goomies does it take to protect a light bulb?

      See ya ,

Well, they can't be serious calling it an EP. I don't know how long
that gig is, but there definately must be around 30 minutes. Together
with ACoS 23 minutes we have a full length album of about 53
minutes... Not an EP to me (but then again, they called LATM an EP
    too... :)

    Cant wait for September :)

Sorry for the non-DT content, but as I recall, many ytsejammers are also fans of Tori Amos, and I think it's time for me to finally get an album of hers..I think she has recorded two (correct me if I'm wrong) and I have no idea which is better.. So, please e-mail me if you can recommend one of her albums. Thanks in advance for any help you ppl might be able to give.

BTW, I'm green with envy reading the comments on YtseCon. Sounds like it was one hell of a party with Mike bringing all sorts of amazingly cool surprises like unreleased studio material and posters and stuff. Wow. I wish I could have been there. Now I just have to wait three more weeks for the guys to cross the Atlantic and appear at a summer festival over here. I hope they'll play LTL and ACOS even though their set might be quite short due to the fact that I think Slash's Snakepit is the headliner at the festival, not Dream Theater. Shites. Well.. have a nice summer y'all:)

Howday all, Glad to hear the Ytsecon was such a smashing success; I wish I could have been there! Well, as you all know, DT will be in NJ this Thursday and I got my ticket yesterday!! (Ticketbastard DOES suck, though: if it's $12.50 for general admission, how did I wind up paying $35.50 for two frigging tickets??) I hope to meet up with some of you other jammers at the show; if my Ytsejam shirt has arrived by then, you can be sure I'll be wearing it! If not, I don't know what I'll be wearing, but I probably WILL have either my Jack Skellington (from The Nightmare Before Christmas) hat or my Dr Seuss Cat in the Hat hat on, so look for it! Anyway, the main reason I'm writing is this: does anyone know good directions coming from Philadelphia? I saw a couple people posted directions from NY, but these aren't much good to me. I'm calling Triple A today to get a triptik to Old Bridge (it'll take me about 2 hours to get there), but I'd really like to get some explicit directions to the club itself if possible. Thanks; I hope to see a lot of you at the show! :)
