Hello everyone, it's BABS. I've been extremely busy at work so this
is really the first time that I have had a chance to post about the
    Convention. So here goes:

1:10 PM - Babs arrives Long Island via commuter plane w/ my best friend
Nannette (I absolutely made her come with me because I was so afraid that
I was going to be the only girl at the convention).

2:00 PM - Babs and Nannette arrive the hotel. I tried to take a nap
(I had not slept on Thursday or Friday night because I was so wound up
about the convention and also I was trying to finalize arrangements with
    the Sheraton).

2:05 PM - Babs can't sleep, so I pester Mike next door (he flew in all the
way from Tuscon, AZ) to come to the convention. Mike and I go downstairs
to check out the banquet room, banquet room has not been set up yet and
they had these gigantic tables in there that did not belong there. Hotel
assures me that they will have everything set up by 5:00 PM.

After that I go back upstairs to take a nap when the phone rings. It's the
crew from Connecticut calling from two doors down saying that their car
fell off the ferry and into the water with all the name tags. I new better
than to believe this. Next thing I knew they were knocking on my door.
Still no nap for BABS! The CT crew tells me that they are going down to
the lounge and I tell them that I planned on going out to dinner w/ a friend
from Massapequa and that I wanted to catch a nap before going. Babs goes
back to bed and the phone rings. It's my friend from Massapequa saying that
she is ready to go to an EARLY dinner. NO NAP FOR BABS! After dinner
I scurry upstairs hoping to grab a quick shower and change for the convention.
NO SHOWER FOR BABS. The CT crew knocks on the doors and says that they are
headed downstairs to check out the banquet room. They then proceed to
insult me and Nannette about the condition of our room. That we had made a
    mess of it already.

6:15 PM - Babs arrives the banquet room and am surprised to see the amount
of people already there! I get warm fuzzies meeting everyone and places
faces to the names. Shortly after Gail Flug, President of the DT Fan Club,
arrives. She's another half-pint like myself and we have a great time
    chatting.

7:45 - 8:00 PM - People start to get restless. Brian Wherry and I take
advantage of Mike Kizer's trivia cards and start doing 70's trivia. While
this is going on I get nervous and walk over to see Gail. I whisper in her
ear "You don't think that they would stand us up do you". She's like
    "Don't worry, they'll be here".

TIME STANDS STILL! Gail Flug and I are talking next to the door when the
room got quiet for a few seconds. In the doorway is Mike and the guys.
Wow!!! Then the room started to get active right away. Wow!!!! At that
point the convention kind of took on a life of it's own! People mingled,
autographs were signed. Mike P had brought some posters from Germany and
I think Italy and we started to raffle them off. More mingling.

We did attempt do celebrate w/ the Ytseslam (the official DT drink). I
told Mike P what we had planned and I asked him his alcohol preference.
Which like Nathan Bradley had predicted was Yagermeister (Spell?). Of
course there was none of that to be found. Then we went to his next choice,
(I can't remember what that was), but to no avail - couldn't be found.
Then the bartender informs Tim Adams that he cannot sell shots, that it
would have to be a regular drink that would sell for $4.50. The drink
consisted of three shots of Jack Daniels (if I remember correctly). Tim
got the drinks for the band members and I think that there were only a
handful of Ytsejammers willing to try it.

Mike P took the time to thank ALL OF THE YTSEJAMMERS for coming out to
the convention. Then he hinted that they would like to see it become an
ongoing thing and stared me straight in the eyes (I could feel mental
telepathy/guilt coming from him - ha ha). In all honesty, I would not
mind doing this again. The only stipulation is that I want to see MORE
people attend and I WANT THE FLAMING BETWEEN JEFF CHEW'S END AND MY END
TO STOP. REMEMBER WE ALL LOVE DREAM THEATER AND THAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT
THING. IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW THEY GOT TO THE CONVENTION, BUT THAT THEY
WERE THERE. THEY WERE THERE BECAUSE THEY GENUINELY APPRECIATE THEIR FANS,
NOT A LOT OF OTHER BANDS DO. REMEMBER THAT!!!!!

As mentioned in a previous post, as I was finalizing the monetary arrangements
with the Sheraton. Jeff Chew started to play the Silent Man while his
brother began to sing. It was wonderful for me to hear everyone left in the
room start singing. It was really a beautiful experience and I wish that
John P could have heard it. Perhaps someone should have taped that?

Again, I want to thank everyone who did come to the convention. WE BROKE
EVEN ON THE MONETARY END. THAT'S RIGHT. NOT ONE PERSON (PARDON THE
EXPRESSION) FUCKED ME. EVERYBODY PAID ME THE $25. THAT IS TRULY FANTASTIC.
YOU DON'T KNOW HOW COMFORTING THAT WAS!!!!!! That was the first thing that
I told management when they called me on Monday morning was that everyone
had paid. Management also told me that Derek was the first one to call them
and say that he received such a "good vibe". Management also expressed
that Mike and John M felt the same way too!

                                                    Sincerely,

                                                    -BABS

BTW...about Mike and Derek moving to Arizona....I don' think so.
They need to see green forests, snow-capped mountains, and a beautiful
coastline. So it will have to be here in Portland, Oregon.
I just have to figure a way to make them believe that it gets really hot here
    more than 12 days a year....hot = > 65 degrees. really hot = > 90 degrees.

What are you talking about, Mike? "apparently it didn't happen..." --
*I* was there and saw/heard it first hand. Mike Portnoy made it pretty
clear when he pulled the tapes of ACOS/the RS gig out of his pocket, that
these were FRESH out of the studio, and that noone outside of the band
had heard these ... he joked that people please put away their tape
recorders, but I think he was seriously concerned about someone bootlegging
the preview and distributing it. There are copywright issues at hand here,
folks. I know ytsejammers hate to think of such trivial music business
    issues, but they're real.

My suggestion -- that dude who bootlegged ACOS destroy the copy in good
faith and DO NOT distribute it in trades!

Yeah, he has. I talked to him about it - hard to get John to

         Hi all,

I am currently in the process of creating a DT Song Book (a file
containing all their lyrics, similar to the Pearl Jam one if you know
what that is). I currently have all 3 studio albums and the Majesty
demo done (I am working on the stuff from Subconsious right now). I'll
let everyone know when I get the first revision done, so you can get a
copy. What I need is the detailed breakdown of the samples on Awake (I
think someone posted those here a couple of months ago), if you could
email me those privately I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance...

p.s., I found a music store in little old Tucson that had about 6
copies of the Awake Tab book and 4-5 copies of the I&W book (must have
         a fan there)...

    Hi guys! (strictly uni-sex)

I know the response so far has been overwhelmingly for Unplugged, but I'd
like to make a vote for WDAJU. I guess it's because of how the whole
acoustic thing has been beaten to death and beyond by eMpTyV (Clapton and
STP on rotation every 5 mins.). It's just way too damn trendy.

Also, I think the songs would lack something without JP's electric sound
(I actually liked his sound on all three albums) that just couldn't be
made up with the novelty of an acoustic sound. I haven't heard any of it
yet, but I can imagine how MP's kit would be toned down so as not to
drown out the guitar. And now for the kicker: The bass sound (my
favorite inst. :) ) is ALWAYS butchered for the sake of the guitar in
    this sort of thing. Yech.

Then again, it IS DT, so I'd probably enjoy it anyway and if anyone can
    pull it off, they can.

So am I the only vote for WDAJU? Is this because everyone's just gotten
their Subconcious CD? By the way, Mike; I'm WAITING!! :)

    Have a great day!
    Glenn

Maybe I can pay it (if it isn't too much). Anyway,if you have the lyrics of WDADU or for the SCARRED from AWAKE,then please send me.I have only the casette version of Awake, and it's without the Scarred! I'd *definetely* go for DT UNPLUGGED first! > Let's have it NOW! ;-) Wow, "Perfect Strangers" and "Wait For Sleep" > done with the guitar would be enough to make me want this CD *BAD*! > I want one (or two, or three ...)!!! :) > > Do it, pleeeeeeeeeease! :-) > > Greets, Matt (drooling strongly)

Am I the only one who would not want DT UNPLUGGED? While some of their songs might be cool when done acousticly (LTL, SM, etc.), if DT actually did an Uplugged performance or CD, it would seem like a sellout to me. DT has done things their way so far, so why jump on the unplugged bandwagon?

In a message dated 95-06-09 09:28:17 EDT, you write:

    >Knowing Mike Portnoy, you probably could've just ASKED for a copy of >ACoS... he probably would've let you tape it right off the >equipment... >Next time something like this happens and you guys want a copy of >some >pre-studio thing... just ask Portnoy... He'll probably let you record >it... no need to sneak around...

I'm just glad that my tape deck didn't eat up his tape! (it was my tape deck, BTW). Anyways, I'd like to thanks the guys who want to drop the recording issue. I mean, can't we all just get along? =)

    Yours, Jeff =)

P.S. My tape deck can't dub tapes anymore. That function is broken.

P.P.S. My friend Chuck (yavinace2@aol.com) has the video of the ytsecon. So, if you want him to dub a copy for you, just contact him. Cool? Don't worry, I'll talk to him

I was off the digest for a little while and missed some of the news. What's this about someone sneaking around and recording ACOS at the ytsejam convention? Also, if anyone could send me info about how cool the convention was (and more importantly what went on, and what songs did DT play) that would be nice.

Most definitely. At first, it was hard to find but it seems to be getting easier to find. Not only do I know DT fans that like this album, but I know some Kansas fans that now like DT because of the Kansas influence. A good time was had by all... ;^)

I&W may sound good as you casually listen to it, but if you really listen to the production, you can hear the MIDI-buzz, the extreme EQ'ing of the instruments. Some other examples are Firehouse... He went way too far when he EQ'd that album... There's a lot of noise on I&W..

Mike I just got my Sub CD!! Thanks alot!!! All in under a week...wow!! I also managed to pick up a few other DT tidbits as well. I got "Live Images", a picture disc live album from New York in '93. Pretty good quality plus it has "Vigil/Eve" on it! I also got "The Silent Man" single today. It's got a demo (read under-produced) version of TTT and a studio version of "Eve". "Eve" is beautiful!!! No James or any of the voice overs, but still really really nice...It's been on repeat for hours!! I think I'll even sleep to it!!! :) Mike-is that James singing Winter on Sub??? It sounds like him in a few spots but it also doesn't. Help!

    Later all! Dave

    P.S. Go Unplugged!!!! Whee!!!
