I wondered why I wasn't getting any DT digests. It just wasn't a slow
summer; some of us were unintentionallu unsubscribed from ytsejam. Now I've
got to read the one's I've missed to catch up!! I hope I had something
worthy to say in my last post. Here's more fodder for thought:
On videos, I rarely watch MTV/VH1, etc. videos, and no video has ever
influenced me to buy the music. Most videos suck (never saw any DT, KX,
Extreme videos), IMHO, especially wherein the band's 'synching' to the
music. True live videos, are probably the best. I did like Pantera's cover
video for Planet Caravan, but maybe that's 'cuz it wasn't typical Pantera
(which I don't really care for).
Yes, the music industry does indeed tend to promote trash: slope for the
simplistic majority. most people don't like music that makes them think.
On the other hand, many of the thinking man's bands : Rush, Yes, Pink
Floyd, Jethro_Tull, etc. have been around 20+ years, with about as many
albums; they may not always be megahits, but they always make good thinking
and sounding music; they are not one-time-flash-in-the-pan bands, with a
quick burn out to mediocrity. Hopefully bands like DT, KX and Extreme will
survive to join the elite.
On my current playlist: anything by DT, KX and Extreme.

I guess it's because James is opposed to bootlegging. Whether
Subconscious fully fits into this category or not is kinda debatable but
if the band isn't gaining financially then I guess it isn't good in his
eyes! That material like this just increases our interest in the band
and its fully legitimate recordings seems to go over their heads...not
that I'm on the side of professional bootleggers or anything, I hate them.

Here's my belated FUCK YEAH!!! for Mike for Subc. (and from my friends
that got copies, too, we can't wait for DTUP).
As for James hating Mike, I think it was because Mike forgot to
hide his stack of boots (that he wanted John and Mike P. to sign)
from James, who made some bad comment about them like "I won't sign
*those*."

This is just something I noticed on the Subconcious CD.. which, as far as
I've listened, is quite excellent... :) Just my overpowering curiosity.. why
does the CD have imprinted "Subconcious Made in Taiwan".. with the
several numbers after it.. I've always noticed these numbers on CDs
before, but figured someone who'd actually made the CD would actually
be able to tell me *what* they mean... or if they were actually put there
by Mike... I don't think they'd be manufacturer catalog numbers or
anything...
Also, does anyone have some live boots for sell.. or know where I can
get some? I'd love to get a copy of a couple of the live shows, CD or
videos, and am willing to pay the price.

Please. I'm sure if you asked Kevin, he'd say the part, while not simple,

Greetings all,
I just thought I would throw out a couple of things and then once
again retire to the pit of ultimate darkness.
One: I noticed a copy of When Dream and Day Unite at my local
used CD store for $9.oo. If anyone would like it ('cuz I'm sure noone
here will buy it since *I* already have one) I could pick it up for you
provided you were willing to pay postage and of course the cost of the
disk itself (and maybe buy me a slurpee).
Two: An umluated a is always pronounced like a long English a
(as long as we're speaking of German here, which is what Jagermeister is
I believe). As a Scot I really thought I could handle my hard liqour,
but the one time I got Jagered it really blew me away (and I blew
seriously back into a toilet later, blech!). Only good single malt
Scotch Whisky for me from now on.
Three: I got my Ytse Jam t-shirt today, and I must say that I
love it. Hopefully I'll be able to take it off long enough to wash it
once in a while. Plus, I've gotten a kink in my neck from standing in
the dark trying to see the glow in the dark writing on the back. Of
course I could put my shirt on backwards, but that would be silly. I'll
just have my wife wear hers in the dark when I want to see.<g>

Regarding the F-word in the new version of ACOS - what's the big deal???
There's a band over here called The Wildhearts who totally take the piss out
of the warning sticker business, cos they put stickers on their records saying
WARNING - contains language that may offend some people even though they use
it themselves!
- I think that sums it up pretty well 8-D

OK, OK, OK. So I am a little late on posting.... :D
I won't go over the setlist. It has already been listed.
It was my first show and I have to say that it was FREAKIN' AWESOME.
I wore double underwear. Good thing too! God can come and take me now.
I have seen DT live. :D
Killing By Inches should have been named Killing by Songs. The singer
(singer?) thought that screaming obsenities could get a crowd moving.
Wrong crowd. What killed me was his *die MF, die MF, die MF, die!!!*
Really made me want to just jump into the frenzy.... Ha, ha, ha.
Echolyn. Not bad. They did seem a little out of place especially coming
on after Killing By Inches. Really toned down. I have to admit that
I really couldn't hear them all that well. They sounded a little campy
and hamonized well. Would have liked to hear them better.
DT. Holy cow. I thought I just had one. :D After the long wait for the
setup (which was well worth it soundwise.) the PA started playing Rooster
by Alice In Chains. That was all I needed to push me over the edge of
being psyched. There wasn't a bad seat in the house execpt where I stood.
Which happened to be right behind this dude who thought he was Fabio. He
didn't even know any of the songs (execpt Lie, of course) Well, anyway,
the show was awesome! (didn't I already say that?!) James voice didn't
crack once. The band was tight too. My biggest test was that I wanted to
see how Derek faired out. He passed my expectations. Eventhough he played
LTL a little slow, (he must have been still learning it) he smoked through
his solo version of Eruption and broke into Erotomania. Very nicely done!
Mike Portnoy was the dynamic one of the bunch. Just awesome. John Petrucci
was all over the place! John Myung hung out in the cool way that is his
presence. I don't know about other shows but this show the band was
all smiles and looked like they were happy to be there. (I think I even
saw JM crack a smile, but not really sure!)
Al Balkiewicz. You must have been the other guy running around with the
Ytsejam shirt. (I wore mine) I saw you in line way up in front before the
show.
I have to say that 'Jammers are the greatest. Everyone is so friendly and
they'll walk up to you out of the blue and start talking. All I did was
wear my Ytsejam shirt and I instantly 'Jammers came out of the woodwork.
Really, really cool. Just want to say hi to Jonathan from Rutgers, the guy
that was from western NY (sorry I forgot your name), another guy who borrowed
my pen to go and see Derek, Buck, Brian Wherry, Duane and the party animal,
the last four, all from Boston. Yo! It was really cool to put names to
faces. Makes me wish I was able to go to the Ytsecon to meet more...
For a show that wasn't too publicized, the place was packed! Shame I won't
be able to go the NY show tonight but I will be going the next time they
play around here!!!!
One question: Did anybody boot the show? Anybody? Bueller? Bueller?
Well, take care...
Johnny, the guy wearing the Sequent Racing baseball hat...

Hello everyone, it's Babs. This is a response to Michael Pomerleau in CT.
We had a crew from CT come to the convention! See what happens when you
"lurk". It would have been wonderful to have more people! BTW, I know that
a lot of you are wondering about how many people showed up - the exact
count was 34 people including the band. It was half of the original estimate,
but it was still great to meet everyone. Next time Michael don't be so

Greenwich Mean Time. Ytsejam come over with +0800 which puts it 8 time

Hello Everyone...
Well I just finished a week and a half of little sleep, lots of
concerts and movies, and road trips. Since I just slept for the greater
part of thirteen hours and I can now perform typing without falling
asleep I though I would post some reviews. This will be in several parts
since I will be including quite a few spoilers for King Crimson and
Echolyn, and the small Caryn Lin / Bon Lozaga tour.
SPOILER!!!
SPOILER!!!!!
SPOILER!!!!
King Crimson (Philly, PA) - Gig Review 6/1/94
---------------------------------------------
This day began a long and rewarding week of concert going. I picked up
my friend Steve in Columbia, Maryland at 3:30 PM and raced back to my
home town of Westminster, MD to get Tom and John. I got home at about
4:20 PM and by this time the traffic was starting to mount for rush
hour on the Baltimore beltway. I flew down Rt 140 determined to be
on-time for the 7 PM Crimson show in Philly, and at about 5:00 I was
stuck in stop and go traffic on the the Baltimore beltway. I managed to
stay sane by putting Thrak in the tape player and turning it all the way
up until my speakers were overloaded with the sound of Trey's low end
stick playing and Tony's bass work. After twenty minutes of this traffic
and the sounds of the title track in the speakers I was out on the open
road doing obscene speeds up Interstate 95.
After Thrak concluded and my tape went through the live Elephant Talk and
Red on the Dinosaur single, we were approaching the scalloped roadway
near Wilmington, Delaware. (By scalloped I mean just that, the pavement
joints were curved so to cause maximum damage to the car's suspension)
We got up into the suburbs of Philly at around 6:30PM and got into the
parking garage at around 6:50PM, hearing the sound of the gate closing
right after we entered. The garage had reached capacity. The crew
emptied out of the car and we walked a block to the Tower Theater.
Outside I saw Chris Bubzy (Echolyn - keys, backing vocals) and Greg Kull
(Echolyn- management) handing out flyers promoting their new album" as the
world" that was released on Sony last February. I talked to Chris for a
few minutes and noticed a long, dark haired bearded guy leaning up
against the wall of the theater in an Ozric Tentacles shirt. I
recognized him and asked Chris if this was Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater -
drums) and he said, "Yeah, that's Mike." I walk towards him and he
recognized my Awake shirt and pointed, while nodding his head in
appreciation. I asked him how it was going and he said that they just
finished recording A Change of Seasons the day before and he was taking
the night off to see King Crimson. I told him that I was hoping to see
him at the Ytsecon over the weekend but the chance of my making it were
waning. He said it was a pretty cool idea. By this time my friend John
walked over and saw his Ozric Tentacles shirt and commented on how cool
The Ozrics were. Portnoy nodded in agreement and then the event staff
people were yelling "clear the Street" so we went inside. I then told
John that he was talking to Portnoy and he nearly shit himself.
We sat down in our pretty good seats, 27th row left Orchestra. There was
a walkway in front of us so we had a lot of leg room. The California
Guitar Trio was already playing when we got into the Theater at 7:10PM.
Then performed a really cool set, with tunes from their two albums, the
Robert Fripp String Quintet album, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,
plus some Bach. They received heartwarming appreciation from the crowd.
Crimson came on shortly thereafter and opened with Coda Marine 474. The
things that impressed me most are as follows:
1. The interplay between Bruford and Mastelletto was awesome! They were
constantly looking back and forth at each other playing with great
precision for a duet of drummers. They alternated strange fills and
rhythms overtop of the beat framework of the Crimson sound. B'Boom,
Thrak, and The Talking Drum + Intro gave them both a chance to cut loose
and for Bruford to use his electronic percussion.
2. Indiscipline once again proved to be one of my favorite songs.
Bruford was grinning like a Schizoid Man during the whole song, and Belew
sped up his vocal part to keep the audience from singing along.
3. Red was incredible and provoked a standing ovation from the audience.
4. Fripp's Soundscaping was inventive and added a lot to the band. He seems
to use the soundscapes in a similar method to a keyboard player to fill
background in songs. The only difference is that Fripp's work is so much
more interesting than a layered keyboard part.
5. Tony Levin's use of the upright bass was surprising and tasteful. I
got to see the "funk-fingers" for the first time.
6. Adian Belew has some great effects for his guitar. He has the
sea-gulls (Matte Kudasai), Mellotron (Dinosaur), trumpeting (Elephant
Talk), percussion (Talking Drum - intro). The man is also a brilliant
front-man.
After the two encores we met a few people in the audience and talked
about the Marillion tour in the USA starting in August (rumor has it The
Bayou is the opening venue). One of the guys I met said he had the new
album and that they seem to have gotten more "Floydy".
We split out and got back with little difficulty. I had to go to work
late the next day so I had some time to sleep....
(continued in part 2, Washington DC King Crimson show)

Not only that, but no matter how you slice it, 130 minutes is NOT 2 1/2
hours. And that's including the "Little Green Bag" intro music.

Well,
Why is it not on my list? I use the News Watcher on my Mac. I see
alt.music.progressive, but no Dream Theater. Is it a software problem or
what???

Subject: INSTRUMENTAL II UPDATE + MORE
Message-ID: <950613175033.2400e857@CSUSYS.CTSTATEU.EDU>
Hello everyone.
Well, Everyone who ordered Instrumental II , or other cd's..they
are all going out in tomorrow's mail. So customers in the US can
expect their CD(s) within 2-5 days, and foreign customers can expect
theirs via airmail within 7-10 days. Please post reviews of Instrumental II.
I'd post one, but everyone would think it was biased or something! :)
It really is a great CD. The clarity of the tracks recorded at Berklee
(YYZ, Farandole, etc) are amazing.
Also, I have the following CD's still left in stock for immediate purchase.
These may be the last in stock this summer and for who knows how long
so this may be your final chance to get these cd's...
I have 12 copies of INSTRUMENTAL II.
I have 3 copes of INSTRUMENTAL I.
and I have 2 copies of mike portnoy's RISING POWER CD.
and 1 (yes, only one left) of the 1986 MAJESTY DEMO CD.
For more information, please email me privately. Thanks!!!
Tim

Subject: Non-DT related, sorry...
Message-ID: <Pine.3.89.9506131732.A24561-0100000@homer>
Sorry all, but this is non-DT stuff. There is simply no mailing
list that I know of where I can ask this question, so I figured I'd ask
it here where fellow metal fans gather....
I was just wondering two things: One, has anyone heard the new
Dokken CD, and what do you think of it? Two, has anyone ever heard of
Crimson Glory, and if so, do you know what ever happened to them?
Crimson Glory is from Tampa, and I haven't heard what's up with them
since I moved north from Florida.
Sorry for the non-DT questions, but I had to ask....
Oh, and on a DT-related issue...remember the discussion over the
beginning of "The Mirror", and whether or not JP's guitar rhythm changes
at all as the drums vary? It seemd to me that the consensus was that
JP's part doesn't vary at all, but it obviously does. He is still doing
"triplets", but which beat of the measure he starts on varies every few
measures as MP's drum pattern changes. Sorry to drag this out again, but
I had to say it...just HAD to...no, really I did.... =)
Take care, all. Any input on this stuff would be greatly appreciated.

And here I thought we lost the Super Bowl because our Defense forgot
how to tackle... I remember a certain play where a certain receiver slipped
oh, about 6 or 7 tackles on a third down to get a first down. No, I think
we can blame the D for that, and not Levy. I think Levy deserves a lot
of credit for focusing the team. Anyone remember "We have this river to
cross, and we're not looking ahead to anything else"? Total focus, and I
think that's the main reason for Buffalo's success (of course the players
don't hurt ;)

Greetings from Tornado Alley! Yes, I'm from the Midwest too.
Minneapolis, to be exact (for the moment). While I'm on the subject,
does anyone know when DT is due back in this area (and why Fates Warning
won't come with them)?
One question for all you YTSE-Jammers...what do you all do? I
know some are students, but for what? And for those of you with careers,
what would they be? I was just curious...one DT concert I was at had
several people in shirts and ties listening, and we all know that DT is
far more sophisticated tham most bands (with many classical touches
theory-wise), so I was just curious to hear what walks of life you all
come from.
Take care!
M. Martin
