Yet another techie here: I graduated from the University
of Virginia with a chemistry degree (specialty in biochem) and
now I'm working for a government contractor installing computers
for the military. In fact, there are a couple of Ytsejammers in
Germany who I got to meet thanks to my job (Hi Jerry and
Alex!!!). I'll probably go back to school in a couple years to
get an MD (that's why I majored in biochem) or a PhD (in
computers, of course :-)) but for the moment it's nice to make
money instead of paying it!

I found a fully multimedia PC advertisement to the Awake album a couple
of weeks ago on the net. Someone had it on their homepage. But I got to
it through about a hundred links and so I have no idea what the URL of it
was. I have put some stuff about it on America Online and recieved a
huge response to it and I am sure that many of you are also unaware of it
(since I was). I downloaded it but I have no way of sending
mail with an attached file due to system limitations. If anyone can help
me in any way or has a place which I could upload this to please let me
know. Its real cool!

I think that maybe we should all just sit back, relax and wait to
hear the song when it is released. This could be the result of the whole
"studio" situation, meaning that while recording, there was a certain
feeling/emotion/aura that brought about this recent thread on JAM. If what
was heard was the 100% final mix, then so be it, we'll have to accept the
1995 version. I love all DT songs, these guys are fabulous musicians, and
whether or not they use the word F***, does not bother me, for all I care
they could say fornicate, after all, the two words mean the same thing ;)
Although the only difference would be, one would cause a WARNING label to be
placed on the package, which in turn could cause a little more publicity?
Maybe not.
I'm sure that DT is aware of what they are doing, and will release
the song the way they want to, not the way the PMRC (I think that's right,
up here we have the CRTC) wants it.
For those of you that have seen DT in the past week or will be seeing
them in the next month (you lucky ducks), was/is the F-word used in the song?
Keep an ear out for this, maybe this thread can be resolved (not that I don't
like threads, I wear them everyday)
And so I shall don my Kevlar flak jacket, READY, drink my last beer, AIM,
and lean against this firm wooden post, FIRE!

Like I mentioned back in the spring, I would be willing to host a "Ytsecon-West" convention/party/whatever thingy, here in the Phoenix area. I would of course, rather it happen when DT is going to be touring through AZ, so it might be in October or even later! But the offer is on the table.
So many Jammers have come to crash here at my pad for the night, it's like the "Station of Dreams for Travelers" or something... people passing through Phoenix on their way from one place to another, or back, or whatever. I've had 8 out-of-towners visit here so far. I think it's great, too! Everyone from the Jam that has been here has been far and above, the "perfect guest". Friendly, outgoing, etc...
So to Brian Cox, Nathan Bradley, the Doc, Steve McMaster, locals Mark Tedhams and Brian Fieg, and the six or seven of you I've forgotten, this Bud's for you!

Here I am to Poo-Poo that "There aren't any Midwesterners out there" idea. Well here is another! I reside in the comfy little town of Dayton, MN, just outside Minneapolis.
So anyway, I'd always thought that I&W was vastly superior to Awake. For some reason, there was something about Awake that just turned me off, but I could never put my finger on it. Perhaps it was something in my subconscious (no pun intended. =) or something. I'd always loved how I&W was so structured and had a purpose. Strange isn't it? I mean, Awake is the album with all the similar ideas floating from song to song, but for some reason I persisted in thinking that I&W just gelled more. Again, something in my subconscious was refusing to believe that Awake rules as it had. Until recently that is. See, Awake has been persistently bugging me to give it a chance. To take it out for a drive and really get a feel for the album. And ya know what? Now I think Awake is almost better! And I figured out why I didn't like Awake first off! It's the fact that the back cover of I&W features the songs all laid out in order. They're all nicely placed there with a nice black background and Sooooo easy to look at. And then there's Awake. (Pitiful eye-roll) It shows the band in a black cauldron or something looking like some death-metal band or something... (Do we agree that the photographer of the band for Awake should be shot?) But it's not the photos that bug me so much. It's the fact that the songs are so annoyingly laid out! First, they're SIDEWAYS!!! Then, they're one after another, mishing and mashing together into some sick, twisted snake of words! Lastly, the song NUMBERS are right side up! Meaning they're sideways when you're looking at the song names!!! For God's Sake, what was the back-cover designer smoking when they put this hellish mess together? So basically, this is why I didn't like Awake all that much. The back cover art was subliminally making me think that the whole ALBUM was all disorganized and thrown together, while the nice list-like I&W was so clean and free. But now I've seen the light. Now I realize that Awake kicks friggin-ass and I'm beginning to think that it's better than I&W! Mostly because it's simply a HARDER album! (UaGM was my fave off I&W, the hardest song on that album I'd say...) Now, my favorite moments of all of Dream Theater's stuff is the opening lyrics to Lie, "Daybreak, at the bottom of a lake. It's a hundred degrees - I can't breathe." and the dissident harmonial climax in LSoaD... "Lifting Shadows off a Dreeeeeee-EEEEEEEEAAAAAAAM" So anyway, that's my point of view. I already know I have a problem. I'm a sick, sick man who needs help, but dammit! I think this stuff needed to be said. If any of you agree with me, then great! Just don't flame me. It's not nice to flame sick, sick people.
But now I think I've just started a possible thread! What is your favorite Dream Theater Moment? I mean, what part in all of their stuff just makes you stomp around the room in a headbanging frenzy, or for our more intellectual friends, what parts of their stuff sends you into a cranial orgasm of grey-matter delight, or for our more emotional friends, where in DT's repertoire do you find tears streaming down your face? But since this is my thread, please be very specific! Like, if you have a CD, how far into the song is it? (I'd have done this for you with my nominations, but my Awake CD is presently being lent to someone. Hopefully there's another DT fan on the horizon!!!)

I think that Dream Theater has been more or less following a path. Their earlier songs (I haven't heard the majesty demos) seem a bit conservative, and with Images and Words they spread out a bit. I think that each member of the band was starting to bring out their personal styles into the pieces. And Then in Awake, they radically changed to a variety of types of pieces. I think that for each member of the band was controlling the direction of one or so of the pieces. It seems to me that Images and Words is perfect. No flaws, at least no flaws in the writing. Awake has some jarring, abrupt changes, but each one is beautiful. I think another change in the music, between the albums, is that they are getting a bit braver. They seem more willing to play metal-like, and contemporary music. Perhaps the usage of "Fuck" is part of this movement. They are probably experimenting. If fuck becomes part of their musical language, then perhaps we should say something. Until then. . .
Also, I saw the Images and Words book, and for Wait for Sleep, there was usually at least one harmonic/counter-melodic line that was not present. Perhaps you saw different tabs. . . The other idea, about the sequencer was intriguing. . . tell me more (I have an IBM, by the way). . .

Hello to all jammerz (especially Andrew Miller!). I just wanted reply to Nathan, the one who was wondering about comparing I7W and AWAKE. Well, first of all, you mentioned that you had a favorite DT song...there's your first mistake, around here, ALL DT songs rule! (I don't mean to pick on you, I'm just trying to give ya a hard time!) Anyway, I can see where you're coming from when you say that AWAKE is more pure. I think Awake is the better album, but only by a milli-thousandth-of-an-iota-of-an inch! The reason being that their sound on Awake is produced better. I think Images and Words, however, has a lyrical power that Awake lacks (although not much). The songs on I&W seem to have more to say than Awake (just take Pull Me Under and Take The Time, both awesome songs in which discussion groups (like the Dead Poets Society) would gladly indulge!) Don't get me wrong, Awake has some great lyrics too (6:00, Voices). And Awake has a better CRUNCH and over-all mix of musical stlyes that I&W didn't dive into. Either way you look at it, they're BOTH great albums! I can't really compliment one or the other without feeling very bad about NOT complimenting the other two so I'll stop now.

PS - about the 'F' word in ACOS... big fuckin' deal. If DT wants to fuckin' use it in THEIR song to make THEIR own fuckin' point so be it! Who the fuck are WE, us lowly YTSEJAMMERs, to even fuckin' THINK about questioning their judgment?

Okay it's been a while since my last post so this might be kinda long. Hmm where to start?
For the guy who asked what we all do...I work for Customer Service for Marriott Hotels...Call and bug me at 1-800-535-4028. I'm the only one working Sat (6/17) night so keep me up ok...I work till midnight CST. :) I'm also takling computer programming courses at a local college.
For ALL the DT fans in the Midwest...WOW! And I thought I was alone... :) We should all get together in K.C. (it's closest to me ;) ) and party at the DT concert! (Whenever that'll be!)
DT = Classical Music. YES!!! If you listen closely in many DT songs one instrument will start to play an underlying theme that the other instruments will pick up the next verse. It sounds really good but is so subtle you almost never notice it. LTL and PMU have some really good examples of this.
F**K. I use it...you use it...everybody uses it. But, in music it should be used only to express what it can only express...anger. I think the example from Operation:Mindcrime was perfect.."$25 bucks a fuck, and John's a happy man...". As said before, no other word can work there. The same might be true with the emotional aspect of ACOS where James sings it. I can't tell coz I haven't heard the new version and only a few time the Subconious version. (Great CD btw Mike!!) I'm sure it will fit. DT is very good about crafting the music to fit the mood of the song. In VOICES the second chours just starts in very abruptly. At first I didn't like that until a friend pointed out what was being sung...the abrupt change fit with the lyrics just as f**k will fit with the music of ACOS.
Well...I've babbled enough already. Lates all!

After all, it's "keyboard arranged for guitar" -- something always gets lost in the translation (it goes both ways of course) Also, If memory serves me, in the iold Keyboard article on Kev back during the I & W tour, they mentioned that Kev used _NO_ Midi for anything, not even for tying his keys together, so I wouldn't count on him having it kaying around in a sequencer (And to the mac-biased guy: Pthbbt! Not all musicians use them. Some of us have taste) ;)

Well, I tried to reach you twice but my mail didn't make it's way through to you. So, now I try it this way...
I just wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU for your corrections and suggestions on our lyrics. If you're reachable again, please email me because I wanted to say some things to you about the CD...
Hey, ytsejammers! Please don't flame me for misusing the jam for this. Didn't know what to do and I was so helpless... ;)

One of the reasons for my liking DT so much is that they do things their own way. They don't care about the musical trends that come and go. They won't be told how to do things!
So in regards to DT using "foul" language in a song, I think we should leave them alone and let them do as they please.
Bye...

Well, there's a few things I'd like to comment on from the last YJ.
1) I&W v. Awake: Personally, I love both albums. DT is kinda like Queensryche in that each album, thus far, has been somewhat different than the last. I mean, compare the Ryche EP to Rage or even Mindcrime, and you'll immediately see the differences. This does not mean that each album doesn't have its merits, though, I don't really like Promised Land as much. =) Anyway, I&W has its strong points, as does Awake. What I listen to depends on my mood.
2) "6:00" - As I've posted before, the song draws, for me, a direct parallel to "Paradox" by Kansas. There's elements of that Kansas song in it. "Paradox" happens to be one of my top 5 Kansas songs, so, I too think 6:00 is a great tune. =)
3) Regarding the use of the word "phuk" - So what? (my $0.02)
4) DT as Openers: Back when I interviewed Mike, which was right after I&W came out, and before they'd toured, he told me that they were still trying to decide whether or not they should headline a tour or open. As he put it, being an opening band would expose them to a larger, newer audience, but, they'd only have 45 minutes to play, "which, for us, is like 3 or 4 songs." (<- mike quote.) On the other hand, headlining, "would allow us to do a full show, but, we'd only be playing to die-hard fans." Obviously, they decided to headline. =)
And, as a side note, he told me they'd just played two shows - one opening for Marillion & Iron Maiden. Naturally, I asked him how it went. He said that both audiences were very receptive...even though "Maiden fans have a tendency to be gung-ho for only Maiden," they seemed to enjoy it...as did the Marillion fans.
What has struck me as kinda ironic in the passing years is that some people I've played DT for have said, generally, "I don't like that Iron Maiden kinda vocalist thing." And for some, they can't get past it. Oh, well. Their loss.
In any event, - hairball

The perfect example is the song 6 O'CLOCK, hands down my favorite DT song. It's so powerful and driving, using its complexity to add excitement and energy to the song instead of just complexity. It's such a COOL SONG! I can't beleive that it's missing from the set lists of so many of their concerts.
I COMPLETELY agree! 6 O'clock is my favorite DT song as well. It's complexity is what makes it so wonderful, but it's not complex for complexity's sake (like IMHO, Metropolis).
Reasons I like Awake more than I&W:
* It's production value is 100% better.
* The songs, as stated above, are more interesting musically, because they flow better, and are more integrated into the lyrical content. For example, 6 O'clock is about a man confused about his decisions in life. The music is similarly frantic and mezmerizing.
* The songs have a tougher musical and emotional edge. If passion is what drives good music (and I think it does), then Awake is better than I&W because it is more passionate.
* There are more (again, IMHO), masterpieces on Awake than on Images. I think "Scarred", "Space Dye Vest", and the "Mind Beside Itself" trilogy are all bona fide masterpieces. These are all songs that have very profound lyrics on a human scale. I can relate to them a helluva lot more than some of the fantasy epics on WDADU and I&W, and that makes them wonderful to me. Besides, they, again, have better musical arrangements than on I&W.
Sorry again for the long post.
Oh - and to the people who disagreed with me about DT opening for bigger US acts, I agree. They couldn't do a set justice in 45 minutes. I just wish that more people knew about this remarkable band...in my opinion, the best band that ever lived.

Well, this is my first post on the list, I've been on the list for the past 2-3 months, but have just been lurking most of that time. DT are by FAR my favourite band now (I only discovered them about 3-4 months ago, still haven't had a chance to see them live). Sorry if my first few messages are kinda long, but I have 3-4 months worth of stuff built up to say. ;)
First, to the guy in high school, you're not alone, I'm still in high school (though, I live in Canada, I'm not sure how the system works down there... I'm 16, so I guess I'd be a junior?) as well. I play keys/piano. I dropped out of piano a few years ago because I got sick of playing the conservatory music. I was going to take up guitar, until I discovered Dream Theater. Their use of keyboards blew me away, I never figured I'd come across a rock band that I'd LIKE that uses keyboards as well as DT do. Of most of the bands I'd previously seen use keyboards, most of their keyboard stuff was horrible.
Secondly, a not-so-belated (it took 4 weeks to get here) FUCK YEAH to Mike for Subconscious. It rules. I'm a bit disappointed with James' singing in ACoS, and the quality wasn't quite as good as what I was hoping for (but I guess I was hoping for something similar to LatM, which is a bit much to expect from a bootleg), but the song is still incredible. "Eve" (first time I heard it), and Petrucci's guitar thing were also great. About the only thing I wish he had done differently, was maybe put some of the rarer songs like Puppies on Acid or Moon Bubbles or whatever on it, since studio versions of both Eve and TLF are available.
As far as Derek screwing up goes, I don't blame him. I've pretty much got that part of LtL down (well, I'm not sure exactly, but my version sounds pretty much the same), but considering that he probably hasn't learned WFS yet, and that Kev's style is different, you can't really blame him (although it definately did come at the worst possible time). Remember, he apparently said at YtseCon that he still had to learn UAGM and LtL, so he had to learn all of it in less than a week.
Lastly, if anyone has ANY keyboard transcriptions or MIDI files, or whatever, of any DT stuff, please e-mail me! I'd LOVE to get a copy of some more of their keyboard stuff. In particular, stuff from TTT, or off WDADU. I've found MIDI files for Lie and the keyboard part of UAGM, but I had to convert the tabs for guitar versions of the keys on Another Day, and the little solo on PMU over to sheet music because I wanted to try playing them so badly.
I lied... lastly (this time I mean it), I think all the discussion about other prog bands here is great! It's thanks to people on this list that I've discovered some great bands like Fates Warning, Marillion and Echolyn (I got their CD, but I was somewhat disappointed - they're just too weird, and I agree with the guy who said they have plenty of talent, but their melodies just seem to be a jumbled up mess. Unfortunately I had no other way of hearing them than going out and getting their CD, and I snapped up the only copy of it I've seen anywhere in Toronto... although they're not bad to listen to occasionally, so I don't think it was a waste of money).
I'm also into Metallica, King's X, Queensryche, Rush, Savatage, and many of the other prog bands other people here are into (well, Metallica are more mainstream, but they're the only other band besides DT who have blown me away with some of their stuff the first time I heard it... to the point where I'm just listening in awe, thinking "These guys are so incredibly fucking awesome" (and I think I used the F-word quite well there... ;) )... of course, DT has done this to me almost every time I hear something new of theres, whereas Metallica has only done it about once, with "Wherever I May Roam", whichI got sick of soon after).
