Dear Ytsejammers,
Back on campus for school, work, and occassional relaxation. Hope everyone had a great time at the Ytsecon. This is my first major post: DT content is first, followed by commentary on various albums, and 1995 concerts. Read whatever you want, and remember, most of this is my opinion. Does anyone know which albums the members of DT consider essential and/or influential? No speculation needed, I want specific albums from printed media articles, interviews, or personal interviews. We all know most of the groups that influenced DT: DT inspires me, and I want to know who/what inspired them. As far as Midwest DT fans, here at Bowling Green (Ohio), I know of at least 10 fans of different majors, interests, and lifestyles. It's uncanny when you discover that a good friend also happens to be a DT fan, it just happened to me yesterday. I was listening to Awake, and one of my co-workers says, "This is Dream Theater!" He hasn't heard the entire album; I can't wait til he hears Subconscious! Anyway, DT has a strong following here, including a non-musician contingency, which is refreshing. Also, I know Anthony Kozar at Toledo is a strong DT fan via the Jam, so all of you other Midwest-sejammers fear not, you are not alone! Maybe we can organize a regional Ytsecon at a location convenient for everyone. Mr. Bahr, Subconscious is excellent. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to Cygnus and Unplugged. For those of you who reamin skeptical, believe the hype. Mr. Hartman, I received my stuff. You are the East Coast Connection. "Lost In The Sky" is great highway listening. I kept the nifty packaging, it makes a cool conversation piece.
What remains is non-DT content:
My biggest asset of the mailing list is reading and discovering about other bands in addition to DT news. Because of this, I purchased FNM and Extreme's new albums and the latest from one of my new favorite groups: King Crimson's Thrak. For those of you who posted info/opinion on these and other albums, thanks a million. I also caught KC in concert, more about that later. What other albums are making you say "Wow!" or even giving you the unfathomable idea of quitting your respective instruments? These albums can be from any genre: I trust your judgment. I still can't get over Thrak, it's incredible. Lately, I've been listening to the usual: any Living Colour and any DT. In addition: Seal (1994), FNM's KFADFFAL, QR's Promised Land, B. Marsalis' Bloomington, J. Hatfield's latest, Sting's Soul Cages, Parliament's deluxe set, Matthew Sweet's 100% Fun, Coltrane's Giant Steps, Carl Stalling Project, Vol. 1, Shaft sndtrk, Helmet's Betty, H. Connick's She, Rollins Band's Weight, Ren & Stimpy's You Eediot, and of course, Subconscious and Thrak. As far as concerts go, 7 concerts and 1 clinic down, (tentatively) 4 to go: -Say what you will about Edward VH's hair, he's clean, his kid is cool, and VH rocked Gund arena. -Best concert of all time: QR in Toledo. -The "Why the hell is there a mosh pit" concert: Matthew Sweet at the Cleveland Agora. -The "Almost all of the opening acts suck" concert: Faith No More in Cleveland. -The "Opening Act nightmare, part 2" concert: Juliana Hatfield. -The only clinic and "How did he do that?" Adrian Legg. -The "Wow! and Best-dressed" concert: King Crimson in Cleveland.
If the remaining concerts (Seal, QR in Columbus, Santana & Jeff Beck, and Tom "the original mack dad" Jones are as good, 1995 will be THE best concert year for me, surpassing 1991: QR's Building Empires, VH's Carnal Knowledge, and Metallica's Wherever I May Roam tours. Well, for those of you who took the time to read this entire message, thanks, and if your responses are too long or don't pertain to the Jam, e-mail me directly at: thetgyi@bgnet.bgsu.edu Hope to hear from you!
Soundcerely,

Hey Jammers,
Well, since you asked, I'm a programmer/analyst at the executive offices of Maaco Enterprises, Inc. ("Uh oh, better get Maaco!", America's Smart Choice, etc.) ;^) in King of Prussia, PA, near Philadelphia. I'm working in MS Visual C++ on Windows NT. I also get to use Microsoft Mail which lops off my YJ digests at around 32K. Pbthththth. I grew up in Nazareth, PA (went to grade school with Michael Andretti!), went to Moravian College in Bethlehem, class of '84 (ouch). My favorite beer is Samuel Smith's Imperial Stout from the UK (cheers to the Brits!) I'm also fond of RumpleMinze, which, when mixed with Jagermeister makes a Screaming Nazi (I think Hairball posted something about that). But I digress... (and use too many parentheses).
Thanks Jason Giles for the Ytsejam Internet T shirt, it's cool! "Let the light surround you..." in glow-in-the-dark ink is a brilliant idea. No pun intended. :P I'll be modeling it at the QR Camden show!
Regarding that nasty word in ACOS, I think we hold DT to a higher standard than other bands and expect them to act thusly. I myself don't care for the idea of them swearing for that reason. BUT, I have no room to talk because I haven't even heard the song yet, so I don't know if it fits or not! I'd PREFER they not swear, but if they think they should, then that's fine with me too.
Speaking of which, thanks in advance to Mike Bahr for my on-order copy of Subcon. - can't wait to get it! 8^D
I think I like I&W better than Awake, but just a wee tiny bit. Why? I have no idea. Both are must-haves!

Hey everybody. Ok, this is about the little discussion in regarding to the differences between DT's last two albums. My personal favourite is I&W. to me, this album represents what DT is all about much more than Awake. This Album consists of direct, pure, and "exact" songs. Each song is in place. Damn it - each RIFF is in place! Any song taken out of there would change the meaning of the whole piece. In my opinion, Awake IS a good album in comparison to mpst CDs out there, but I think it is much less perfect then it's predecessor. It's much more "dirty" in a way. Much more open-Hihat, or Guitar noises (you know, those messing around with the strings that creates meaningless noise)... A lot of parts and riffs shouldn't really be there. Can't pin point one specific riff, but that's my observation. There are also so many much better "concept albums" than Awake....
Don't mean to offend anyone... See you everyone. Aviad.

Hey poeple! First of all, I'm sorry that I posted THREE PHUQING POSTS to this issue. Just turned out to be that way. Ok, my favourite "DT moment" has got to be the part in Take the Time when Petrucci and Moore do this amazing pattern together, and then everybody goes into a semi-fusiun part. You got to be knowing what I'm talking about. I don't have the CD, but it somewhere after the verse and the Chorus. I just feel so leviated when hearing this... Aviad (last post for a long long time)

Hello Jammers!
Okay, to respond to a few things...first off, the fact that DT appeared WITH Fates Warning almost (almost, mind you) makes me want to move to Kansas in hopes that they'll do it again! Regarding "The Mirror", after JP's guitar intro, when MP comes in w/ drums, JP does change rhythm slightly...if you listen to the groupings of triplets. At the beginning of the song, JP is holding a consistent rhythm. As the drums start, JP groups every second and third triplet slightly closer together, not maintaining equal spacing. The time signatures aren't affected, just the beat on which the triplet starts in relation to the last rhythm. I'm not sure at the moment whether it's an eighth note off, or a sixteenth, or a millionth, since I'm short on sleep after a desperate all-night attempt to keep a health club running smoothly (thus answering my own question regarding our career choices...). So no, the time signature doesn't change, but which beats are started on changes, not to mention the accented beats. I think my metronome is off...the beats seems to go from 80 to double time, or 160, but at the same time it comes dangerously close to 84 and 168...my brain must be on the fritz again.
Regarding Steve Morse and John Petrucci, supposedly "The Silent Man" came out of their working together, along with some other stuff that is as yet unreleased. Last I heard Steve was going to be working with Deep Purple, so I take it he's rather busy. Steve was given a credit on "Awake", you notice.... I must say the idea of a Petrucci solo project would be rather inviting! Speaking of the Petrucci family, whatever happened to his sisters Roxy and Maxine? After their band broke up and Roxy went to Vixen (which then broke up), I haven't heard anything from them. (Hey...maybe they could play on JP's solo project...yeah....)
Okay. Time for sleep.

To Chris:
Yes, thanks...I know that JP doesn't play "triplets", actually. That's why I stuck it in quotes; for lack of a better way to sum it all up in a nutshell, I called them triplets. Just for the sake of simplicity. =)
Oh, this isn't a flame if it sounds like it. Just agreeing.

Actually, I liked the thread here we had one time about good classical pieces - there's quite a few classical fans 'round here. I'm not real knowledge because I'm not a musician, but I do like Mozart, Ravel, Wagner...

TLF (studio) is on the Lie CD single... TLF (demo) is on Subconscious, among other places, I believe.
Speaking of TLF, I was looking at my file of unreleased lyrics, and I noticed that TLF wasn't in it... has anyone transcribed them yet?
If not, here's what I got after a few listens...
To Live Forever Music by Dream Theater Lyrics by John Petrucci ( ) denotes only on 'Lie' CD-single version [ ] denotes only in demo version { } denotes I'm not really sure what he sang - this is a guess... ----------------------- If I'd started from the top and worked my way down There'd be no reason to live forever... to live forever...

Hi there... few comments...
First off, someone mentioned DTI-- Dream Theater Interactive... Anyway, it was known about here, and put on the 'net by C-Man... Anyway, those of you will notice that there are alot of facts there that are similar to our FAQ... it appears (but has never been "proven") that their info came directly from the FAQ...
Also... for those asking about what we do... Well, I'm about to be *gulp* a senior studying co-sci at Brandeis, which is outside of Boston... I'm at home in Pittsburgh now, using a friend's accout to login to my account... It's a sparrow.
> What's the significance?
It's mentioned in "Pull Me Under" in the second verse: "Watch the sparrow falling..."
> Also, what is the girl holding?
Now, that's debatable. I'd like to think that it's the same mirror that's on the _Awake_ cover. But, I think John Myung has been quoted otherwise. My best guess is that it's the Majesty symbol.

No problem. :)

I love playing along with this song on guitar, but listening to it, I find it really repetitive. The thing I like about IaW over Awake is that there is very little repitition on IaW, so you really have to think when you're listening to it until you "get" the song. You may notice a song like ACoS takes a long time to "get" before you can "feel" it. I think Awake in general has more standard form repetitive songs. But, it has more emotional depth than IaW.

For starters, I would like to say that Bernd Basmer's use of the 'Jam should be more that welcome, and that something like that is perfect here. And for those that never read the lyrics, they are something incredible. . .
And for Lars Hellsten in Canada, I was curious if you had all of Wait for Sleep down. Also, I am 16 at Lowell here in San Francisco, and attend the conservatory here in SF. Classical keybording is as important as Rock keys to me. I intend to be a composer of both.
I think Chris has the right idea for Wait for Sleep, and Macs.
I was curious, it seems that almost all of us here that have named a profession have mentioned either music or some sort of Science field. The exception I saw was for journalism. Does this generally hold true?
My favorite moments: (i) The entire opening for the studio of Take the Time (ii) The "Wait for Sleep" keys riff on Learning to Live (iii) The background voices on Vigil on Subconcious. (iv) The opening to Metropolis, especially on Live at the Marquee (v) The pseudo-transitory opening to O Holy night.
And to Mike- I still have heard nothing on the subject of the mystery track. What purpose does it serve?

NDR videotext says the schedule is:
Extreme: 12:40 - 1:45 pm Dream Theater: 1:45 - 3:00 pm Page & Plant: 4:35 - 6:30 pm
If possible, I will record these bands on DAT. The problem is that the radio broadcast will be from Sun 6:00 pm until Mo 1:00 am so DT will not be broadcast live. Anyone know when they will be on air?
