5) Carlos Santana - See Above. HUGE amounts of feeling.
6) Ronnie Montrose - I've seen Montrose about 15 times starting with a Gamma
(anyone old enough to remember them?) show when I was in high school.
Incredible tones and control of the instrument. He blew away Mark Bonilla
when I saw them together. A must listen for any guitarist.
7) Robin Trower - I only have Bridge of Sighs and it sounds great. He has
that Strat through a Marshall tone that I would kill for!!! Great blues
player.
Anyone agree/disagree with me? Let's discuss it.

depends on my mood. at first i hated Awake - it was too commercial sounding.
but it grew on me. now i appreciate the heaviness of it. i've said before
that i like the production TONS better than on I&W and that still stands. i
agree that had DT done another I&W - which is what i really wanted back in
Oct - then besides waiting until late '96, i would have been disappointed
that they hadn't progressed. after all, that's what they do best, right?
d) echolyn at the Bayou, DC:
pretty kool. they seemed pretty relaxed and at ease. but as Mike and his
friend John said at the show (hey guys!) echolyn are not DT. the opening was
really strange/kool. as the band memebers took their places on stage, a bald
dood came out w/ another guy and read some lyrics(?) or something from one
of echolyn's cd liner notes while another guy wearing a rainbow colored
clown's wig blew a bamboo looking pipe into the microphone. the bald dood
seemed quite into his reading and was actually quite good/fanatical :) then
everyone on stage started talking/chanting/singing all at once this
mushed-up, garbled piece which lead straight into a song. pretty wacked out
but very kool - as you echolyners(?) can tell, before this show i had never
heard anything by them and i'm still trying to scrounge the money for their cds.
i digress...but anyway, the show was good. those melodies did sound a bit
strange but i thought it was because it was live. will have to confirm when
i get some recorded stuff. i think they may be similar to Fates Warning in
that they may have to grow on me. but i'll give 'em a chance.
before the opening bands went on - GreenDay and Pearl Jam; i swear it was
both these bands - the representative from Sony (VA tags: YTSEJAM) that my
guitarist and i had met in the parking lot on our way in, introduced us to
Chris and Paul who were very kool and thank us for coming out. the Sony dood
gave us a couple echolyn "Interactive Multimedia Kits" which are kinda
neato. in our short convo, the guys kept emphasizing that they had opened
for DT the night before and would be doing so again the following night.
only one gripe: who the hell was the old geezer who was drunk and "dancing"
all over the floor??
anyway, good show. i'd recommed seeing them for the $6 if they come near
you. echolyn and DT...hmmm, wish i could've been there (i hate all of you
who went ;) oh well...
e) umm, lemme think of something else...oh yeah. Subconscious. i'll keep
this short:
Eve: not bad. not quite what i expected but pretty good. might be lacking
w/o the samples
aCoS: wow. blows me away. my guitarist can't stop talking about it/listening
to it. he's vowed to figure it out before it's released - even though i told
him they've changed it. speaking of the changes, i sure hope it's not too
dramatically different. i like it this way. very Metropolesque.
oHN: hehe my dad (devout Christian) got a kick outta this
CTW: i'm not a Beatles fan but somehow DT makes it bearable ;)

Great review of Instr. II, John! I hope this came
in the mail today...
-IAW vs. Awake-
I know in my mind that Awake is a better album,
but my heart leans toward IAW. I miss the guitar/
keyboard solos, and the masturbatory (would that
be en explicative application of the word, Randall?)
instrumental sections. I do like the heaviness of
Awake though. Plus, I think the writing is a bit
more structured and mature. Although IAW didn't
come out of my player for over a year after I got
it and Awake wore on me more quickly, my vote
would still have to go to Awake as the "better"
album.
-What I do-
I work in an analytical lab for a semiconductor
manufacturer in the Bay Area. I (mostly) utilize
electron micropscopes and related analytical
equipment to analyze failures on Si from front
end to back end in the manufacturing process.
I get to "play" with acids (the most dangerous
part (okay, the only dangerous part) of the job
because some idiot will dump acetone into the
fuming sulfuric waste container and an innocent
person will then dump more fuming H2SO4 (like
they're suppossed to do) into the same container
which will be just the right amount to cause an
explosion that burns people's faces and blows
acid waste all over the lab (fume hood not-
withstanding). (and guess who gets to clean it
up? (donning splash suit and SCBA unit) ARGGGHHH!)
Well, the liquid nitrogen is cool to mess with
though... And I have this cool SPARC 10 and
free Internet access.
And if I get off my lazy arse, I'll get that
materials engineering degree (hopefully before
I'm 30) to add to my AA and vocational cert.

Conceptually, The Wall is probably the best album, but as far
as being musically and lyrically consistent and coherent,
Mindcrime beats 'em all!

from the 1.5 albums i've heard, he's pretty good...reminds me a bit of
satriani...but perhaps tries to imitate him too much?

one of my favourite guitarists, even though i only have a couple of his albums.
he has the most feeling of any guitarist i've heard...his tone is so sweet!
he doesn't have to shread to impress...his Europa is one of my favourite
instrumentals ever (does anyone have TAB?)...one of the few only guitarist
that can sustain one note for over a minute and make it sound great!

I've been reluctant to post about which i feel is a better album because honestly...I wasn't sure, but today I took the time to listen to both closely. One of the major drawbacks to I&W, Ive found is the production. Even before I had heard what a well produced DT album sounded like (Awake), I would listen to I&W and say these guys are real good...but they sound too good. Let me explain...they sounded to clean..every note sounded perfect..every drum sound sounded exactly the same. This sounds so unnatural. If you listen to Awake..you can hear Portnoys snare hits dont all sound the same (if you dont notice this check out the end of Innocence Faded). Some sound alot harder than others and it makes for a more natural sound. The gutar doesnt sound as clean on Awake as it does on I&W. Again more realistic and natural. But the bass on both albums is way too low. As for the actual songs..the writing (music) on I&W is more imaginative and complex. There is no comparison to say.....Metropolis on Awake. Awake gfollows a more solid structure of verse...chorus....verse than I&W does. The writing (lyrics) I feel that Awake is better. Songs like Scarred and Voices...completely surpass a lot of the stuff on I&W. So, trying to pin down which album I like better would depend on which aspect was being talked about.

Someone said they thought John Petrucci learned a lot from Eddie Van Halen? I really don't think so. Eddie seems like a nice guy and is a professional and talented musician, but as far as technique, composition, or ANYTHING I would have to say that John P could whoop Eddie's butt w/ one hand <either hand> tied behind his back. Eddie, to me, has always been just a noodler... a dabbler. OK, so he's dabbled for over 20 years. Big deal. John P is the king of the rock guitar rock. Longevity doesn't mean much to me. It just reminds me of the whole "Hendrix was god, MAN!" argument. Come on. We know who JP's influences are. Sorry, but I think JP learned more from the school of Yngwie Malmsteen than that of Eddie Van Halen.

Folks, We arent arguing about whether or not it is DT's perogative to include obscenities, but there ARE obviously DT fans out there that feel that their use is possibly NEVER "appropriate" and that its use is somewhat degrading to the ideal that we have held DL to. I know that I won't give up listening to DT becuase of it, but i cant help but wince when I hear those words used. I, for one, am very aware of the use of obscenities, and do all that I can to avoid EVER using them. I know that this is VERY uncommon, but...then...isnt DT uncommon too?

Hi!
I've been following this list for a while now and really enjoy it. I'd like to comment on the subject of DT opening for popular bands like Van Halen. Personally I think it's nice for new people getting in contact with DT, but in the long term it *MAY* have a down side to it. The public visiting concerts might get larger, DT will stop playing in clubs, you can forget to meet band members backstage, they won't be visiting ytsecons anymore. But probably the worst thing to happen is, that all this success will influence them musically. (IMHO: metallica). DT has the potention to get really big. What do you think about this?

Wow, I knew that Maiden (especially Dickinson) digs DT, but didn't know DT covered any Maiden songs! Do something for me. Listen to Eddie's guitar solo on the VH live album and then listen to JP's solo after "To Live Forever" on the Live in Japan video. You'll soon discover that Eddie is technically good, but is musically inferior to JP. Whereas Eddie's solo has no form, and little content other than rambling noodling, JP's solo has a beginning, middle and end. He changes styles, moods, and feelings. He also rips better and more consistently than Eddie.
After listening to those two solos back to back (and other VH and DT songs), I've come to the conclusion that JP is the complete guitar player. Let's face it, Eddie's tapping style was what blew us all away 15 years ago when we first heard "Eruption", but one style does not a guitar god make (at least in this day and age). JP can do it all - tap, rip, shred, pluck, pick, groove, funk, (and he does some _mean_ classical arpegios <sp>). Correct me please, if I am wrong, but I don't think Eddie is that complete a guitar player.

I sure hope that ACOS hasn't changed that much, just because it was so good before. I'm still probably not buying it though. My favorite parts are the "dreams came true" part and all the other little slow parts and the intro and the instrumental sections, and the part with the groups of three rhyming lines and....
I&W vs. Awake is tough. I&W is super cool and has no bad spots on it. Awake has a little I don't like (some lyrics to Voices, a little bit of IF), but its long enough to cover itself over. Heaviness isn't a big concern for me, but I do love the mirror (I love surrounded equally though). If you take WD&DU into it, it gets blown away. It's just not as good, owing a lot to the poor sound quality I think. I do like the nasty bass sound, but the guitar sound is limp, like a strat or something. But when you put the songs in the hands of the current DT, it kicks, like AFIL and TKH on LatM. That stuff rules. OAMOT has not been adequately performed by James yet, I don't believe, I've got it on the Milan 93 boot, which I think is the same as lost in the sky or something.
BTW, I saw a Kick into a Dream the other day for $41.99. I'll probably pick it up with the cash prize I won from a chem. contest (yeah, I'm a chemistry geek). A related story - I saw it at the used store while I was selling my Concise King Crimson disc. Someone recently said the new KC is better. How so? I thought Concise KC bit after Schizoid man was over. It didn't sound really progressive unless it was freak progressive. As any DT fan knows, you don't have to just play bizarre stuff to be proggy. Melody is more fun than weird stuff. Listen to DT, Yngwie, Rush, or Believer for prog, not just people doing weird stuff. That's my opinion.
My favorite DT moment? I'll pick one from each album. I'll try just one anyway:
WDADU - classical keys part in OAMOT I&W - bridge of surrounded Awake - gtr solo from Scarred. That song rules and is at least as good as LTL. LatM - Another Hand + The Killing Hand = Give those guys a hand! (BTW, on the aforementioned Milan 93 boot, my favorite part is another LaBrie misstatement - "Have any of you heard the album 'Live at the Marquee?'" crowd noise "This song's called Under a Glass Moon." I just love that. I wonder if it was intentional. Subconscious - (besides ACOS) first 30 sec of beatles stuff.
A little more - what's up with the Japanese version of Awake. At the ol' used CD exchange yesterday I saw 4 versions of Awake: Cassette - $7.99 (minus scarred and with Innocence Faded last) Used CD - $10.99 (I can't believe someone sold it!) New CD - $14.99 New CD, Japanese import - $28.99 - is there another CD in here or something? The packaging indicated that it was the same as the U.S. version.
