Has anyone had a successful trade with Al Balkiewicz? JUne 6
was the date he promised he would get the tapes he owes me done. So
2 weeks later nothing... No tapes, no replies to email, nothing.

It has only been 4 months. How long does it take to hook up 2 vcrs,
push record on one and play on the other???????????? I mean I am
a busy person too, yet I got my tapes out within a week or so.

After the first week or so he said something liek he tried to do the
tapes but the first 15 minutes of the recorded tape was blank or something.

Looks like another Jeremy (Haynes that is since there are other Jeremy's
    on the list) to me.

I wonder if I will ever do a trade again. :(

Or what's the reason for half of my last message being replaced by a

    Hello everyone,

I just wanted to comment on a couple of threads that have been kicking
    around here.

    Awake vs Images and Words
    -------------------------
Basically, the bottom liine for me is: Awake's production on Images and
Words would have created one of the greatest overall albums I have ever
heard. Unfortunately I really don't care much for I&W's production, so I
don't listen to it that much. I find Live at the Marquee, Dance of
Eternity and Lost in the Sky in my CD player more often. I would have to
agree with whoever said "DT move on with Awake and leave the classical
and jazz influenced music of I&W behind", except this is why I DON'T like
Awake as much as I&W. The production on Awake is fabulous though. If I
was as big of heavy metal fan as I was three years ago, this would be my
    favorite.

    Fuck

    ----

The Fuck thread has been beaten to death, but I would say profanity is OK as long as it is used sparcely to convey emotion. When it is overused it really becomes useless. Marillion, Pink Floyd, and Queensryche all use profanity sparingly and to great effect. (Fugazi, Animals, Op:Mindcrime)

Of course, is this word considered pornographic? We (USA posters) could be shut down by the feds now that the Telecommunications Bill has passed in Congress. <grin>

Evening, folks.. After a while of lurking I have to get on my soapbox..

    "...the pain inside, coming outside..."

"...I've heard the promises, I've seen the mistakes, I've had my fair share of tough breaks..."

An hour ago I heard that Dream Theater have cancelled their European Tour, or at least the Finnish leg of it. They won't be coming to the Nummirock festival despite commitments made earlier.

"...would you like to sit and talk to me about the way things change so suddenly..."

I have no idea why this cancellation has occurred.. It's not the fault of the festival organizers, I'm pretty sure about that. I would sadly guess it's either DT or their management..

"...who were the leaders? what controlled the Killing Band that caused this mourning..."

I don't think I need to say that I am PISSED. And that is an under- statement. Frankly I have hardly ever been this much disappointed in my whole damn life.

"...I never lost my devotion, but somewhere fate went wrong..."

I feel thoroughly betrayed. Maybe Dream Theater quotes will express my disappointed feelings better than my own words. And as you can prolly notice, I am presently filled with bitter irony.. Fuck.

"...Deceit is the second without end..."

"...I fell in love to be let down..."

"...Never been much of a doubting Thomas, but nothing breaks like a broken promise, you tell me 'bout your two more coming, but once is just enough for me..."

Shit, once WOULD be enough for me! I have never seen DT live! Last February they were over here, but there was no way I could have made it to the gig back then. Now next weekend I would have been able to go, I have my ticket and everything, and now they CANCEL. Aw fuck. On with the stupid quotes. Don't get mad at me, I just feel bitter and want to write this shit down.

"...Hypocrite - how could you be so cruel, and expect my faith in return..."

I don't feel like listening to IAW anymore now, either. It's been in my CD player for the past week, I've been waiting to hear LTL live and everything.. Now even the CD tracks sound disappointing :-(

"...Is there fantasy in refuge? Should I turn on my religion? These demons in my head tell me to..."

"...Never come near me again, do you really think I need you?"

"...And he turns the music down, but just can't seem to shake that sound..."

    Hi all,

Well, first off, do I understand that the DT show was not broadcast over the weekend in Germany?? If this is the case, I suggest we take over the radio station (suddenly thoughts of the movie Airheads comes to mind...)

Anyway, a quickie thanx to Jaime for issues 5-8 of Metropolis Watch (which I just received yesterday) - thanx.

And for the question of the day: what is the current address for the official fan club? I saw something in the MW newsletter which reminded me about it, but I dont recall seeing an address listed...any help would be appreciated! BTW, the membership costs $16, correct?

Okay, that's it for the moment...c-ya

believe me, they _will_ grow on you! i first heard echolyn on one of michael backof's prog compilation tapes...i was expecting this excellent band, but when i first heard the song As The World, i immediately thought, "WHAT THE F*UCK IS THIS _CRAP_!!!?"...it was just so weird! the vocal harmonies totally threw me for a loop! but i gave it a chance, and now echolyn is one of my favourit bands, along with DT, and Marillion. Since then i bought the CD, and got somone to copy for me their previous 3 cds...as well, since it doesn't look like echolyn will be touring the west anytime soon, i'll be getting a bootleg video of one of their shows. for all you interested, there will be an IRC chat with the guys from echolyn on june 28th (i think...someone please confirm) the guys are really cool, and have said that they want to do an IRC chat at least once a month. > tim a.

To the Flotsam & Jetsam guy: I've been listening to Flotsam since about 89 or so. All of my friends that listen to them think that 'Quatro' sucks, but in my opinion it's their best album. If you really like them I would suggest that you pick up 'No Place for Disgrace'. That album was recorded when Jason Newsted (Metallica) was still writing songs and, I think, playing bass for them. That album has some exteremly cool songs on it. Then, if you like that, pick up their two other albums (I'm not to sure what their titles are because I've been listening to nothing but DT since 92). 'Quatro' is a very good quality recording, with crunchy guitars, deep bass, precise but random drums, and one of the three best sounding vocalists I have ever heard (James LaBrie, Micheal Kiske being the other two). If you like DT and need a break from the norm, you should definitely check out Flotsam & Jetsam.

For anyone who cares, I work for Medic Computer Systems in North Carolina as a computer programmer. Moved down to NC from Michigan about 2 years ago, after realizing that there were no computer job in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The one BIG drawback of living in Raleigh, NC is that you will never hear DT on any radio station that I know of!! I am just glad I was able to be introduced to their brilliant music while living in MI. My big DREAM now is to actually some day see them perform live! As for which album I prefer, has to be Awake. I loved Awake when I first hear it, although I thought they had a new vocalist for a second there. To me, it just has a broader variety of songs, such as Mirror to Silent Man. I did not like 6:00 at first, but that has changed. I loved I&W, but Awake just sounds better to me for some reason. Talk Later, Fred Ward

Heh! Zach actually remembered one of the funnier moments in 'Jam history. Some of you were there back then, before I was a young David Geffen, before CDs and Mike Bahr become synonymous (smile) when one night, an interesting post came to the Jam. :)

I was drunk as a lord and so were most of my friends, so, naturally, I had to make things worse and set myself up for all sorts of disaster by logging onto the net. I finally drank one margarita too many, and went to "rest" awhile, and some friends of mine made an "interesting" post to the Ytsejam, signing it: Mike Portnoy, percussionist, Dream Theater.

When I found out about it the next day I just about had a heart attack!! :)

I noticed that "Jeff Forte" had included a quote from "The Crow" in his signature. I was curious, has anyone else read "The Crow" by J. O'barr. It makes excellent reading, and trancends any stereotype normally placed on comic books. It is truly fine literature, unlike the ungodly, ruinous cinematic version. It seems that "The Crow" would be excellent for the Ytsejam sort of people -- people with a sense of artistic taste. Raise your right hand if you've read "The Crow".

Also, the Books of Magic by Neil Gaiman is superb. . . Raise your left hand if you've read that. Another piece of literature in comparison to it's sequel-esque comic series.

Also- the Japanese version of Awake (Hit me if I'm wrong) includes "Eve", the studio version. I don't know if it includes lyrics.

Hi everyone. I've been away (from the computer) for a few days so I'm catching up.

Who likes classical? I studied classical double-bass for the past 3.5 years. I can be fun. Someone said he doesn't see a classical influence in DT. Possibly, they aren't at all classically influenced but I'm sure that we're using classical as the genre not the period in music history. I am influenced by classical music, forms and harmony but the stuff I write doesn't use any standard forms (such as sonata form) and I definitely don't sound like Mozart ;). My point is that a classical influence could be as simple as saying that Beethoven didn't always go where you expected him to so you don't have to either. You got the idea, though, from a class you took when you discussed Beethoven - classical influence.

Best DT moment. For me, has to be Surrounded. I just met a great girl about a month ago and Surrounded completely makes me think of her. To me, it's a very positive song. I'm notoriously bad at lyric interpretation so I won't offer my thoughts (yet anyway) on what it means but I'd be interested in hearing what others think of Surrounded. Maybe some more literary types :).

I'll be interested to hear the new ACOS (I'm now waiting for Subconcious to hear the old ACOS). I don't know how fuck will sound in it, but if the lyrics that someone posted are correct, it doesn't bother me. I mean, what the fuck ;). Seriously though, I think it can be done in a way that fits the song. I hope it does.

I&W v. Awake. I bought WDADU the same week it came out. I went through a I-hate-rock phase during which I&W was released, so I didn't buy it. I read in article, post I-hate-rock phase, about DT and decided that Awake would be really good. Bought it right when it was released (hadn't heard one tune from it) and fucking loved it! I listened to it constantly. I finally bought I&W and listen to it, almost exclusively. I guess it's because I just got it. I can't really decide which I like better. They're both great. Eventually, I'll put I&W away and pull out Awake (or the new EP :). The drums on I&W are wierd (can someone explain triggered drums? Hairball?) but the playing is fantastic and the songs are great! But same with Awake. I'm just listening to I&W a lot right now. BTW, WDADU is also great. I'd love to have it re-released (after it's re-mastered).

Oh brother. The Mirror. That whole beginning bit CAN be done different ways. The way that is easiest to understand is the way that's already been posted according to the Awake book. Starts in 4/4, goes to 12/8 then (don't remember the book, this is my idea) back to a faster 4/4. If you could take away the drums, the guitar part would not change through any of the sections. WITH the drums, it does. The first bit before the 12/8 is no drums. Sounds like xxx- xxx- xxx- xxx-. Then the drums come in and it SOUNDS LIKE 3/4 superimposed over 4/4. It could be written in 12/8 as: guitar: xxx-xxx-xxx- drums: B S B S Then it goes to 4/4 but 2x as fast is you go by the drum part. The guitar is now playing 8th notes but like this in 4/4: -x xx -x xx

Sorry to go on and on with this but it's all I know about so I'm writing about it. I did, in fact, sit down for a long while writing it out and figuring out exactly what's happening. I hope others will do the same. Take what I've written here and see if you can make it work before coming up with the "no chance that's happening" posts. Not a flame, just hoping people will think before speaking.

A couple guys already didn't apologize for the length so I'm not either :P

Does anyone know the latest on Kevin? I remember someone on the list saying they knew him personally. I'd like to know if he has a record deal or if he is going to release something on his own.

I also thought I would throw out an idea to the list. Is there anyway we could do some sort of petition to some record companies to sign Kevin. Maybe this sounds stupid, but I think that if a record company received an enormous request to sign someone, they might just pay attention. If anyone is interested, let me know.

Off the subject, someone mentioned about DT becoming anti-christian when Kevin left. Take a listen to Hollow off his demo or even Lie from Awake. Both songs seem to take a bitter stance against religion. They seem to be coming from someone who feels quite betrayed by the whole thing.

Anyway, let me know if you are interested in forming some type of petition.

    Thanks,

    Rick

Here is my contribution to the Concept Album discussion. First of all, I've never heard Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime before. Is this album really as good as some say it is?

Anyways, here's my list of faves (in no particular order)......

Marillion -- Misplaced Childhood - I love this album. I think everybody should have this in their collection. Great melodies all throughout and poetic lyrics. Like one long 40 minute song!

Yes -- Tales from Topographic Oceans - Wierd album. Just 4 songs and it's over 80 minutes long! Has to do with some Hindu scriptures, I think?!

Beatles -- Sgt Pepper's L.H.C.B. - Was this the first ever concept album? Is it a concept album? I dunno, but I love it!

Rush -- 2112 - I'm a big Rush fan! Great concept, great music, great lyrics.

Rush -- Hemispheres - I just can't wait for my Cygnus CD from Mike Bahr!

Someone asked about the the Jap. version of Awake. It includes an extra 3" CD with the studio version of Eve on it. 3" CD's are really cute! Its the only one I have. (don't tell anyone else that I used the work "cute" to describe something DT related)

It also include a black+white book with the lyrics in Japanese. -- ************************************************************************** * Jason Hartman "I am the Killing Hand!" lhartm1@gl.umbc.edu * * * * You're fighting the weight of the world, * * and no one can save you this time. * * Close your eyes - you can find all you need in your mind. * * * * "Take the Time" - Dream Theater * **************************************************************************

To All: 1. I know about the ftp.nevada site for guitar tab etc. and I was wondering if there is a site ftp., www, or even Email where you can get lyrics to songs? (published songs that maybe the artist decided to keep out of the CD).

    2. PHUQ - sure. I like it in the right song.

    3. Awake vs. I & W: Awake is better in my opinion, mainly cause the music is heavier and the production is awesome. This is THE best sound quality CD I have ever heard. But, IMHO I&W is a more complex and thought out CD as far as the songwriting.

    That's all. Later

Carlos of course has great tone and superb feel for the instrument. He really can make that thing sing.

I saw Robin Trower at a club date last year. I love his stuff, and am glad he is getting back to his blues roots. "Bridge of Sighs" about 10 feet from a fully cranked Marshall was a religious experience...

I also am a big fan of Robben Ford. He is one of the smoothest guitarists I have heard. I really like some of his early fusion stuff but like his new blues stuff too; although he is almost *too* smooth to sound right playing blues. I really liked his "Talk to your daughter" album though.
