Well Dave - I can't tell you much but I can tell you this:
    NOTHING'S CLOSED YET.
The guys are deliberating - nothing's still permenant and the vocalist
(this labrie fellow) is not a sure thing - they're gonna have to go
through a lot in order to get along and stuff - but we'll keep each
    other posted.

Ain't the 'jam a great thing? We know everything before anybody else.

BTW: I heard Dream Theater are preparing for a third album. I can't wait.

Just thought I'd respond to more stuuf that's been on the 'Jam:

    1. To the Flotsom & Jetsom Guy - They Rule!! Jason Newstead of Metallica
used to be in this band.

    2. Echolyn and Awake will grow on you!!! I had a hard time at first with
both, but the more I listened to them, the more I loved them.

    3. Ytsecom Midwest! I might be able to make that.

    4. To the guy from Finland. Dream Theater better be getting some great
Vitu to cancell on you like that. Great Irony, usionf the song quotes like
    that.

    5. I'm pretty sure James Labrie IS the new singers name.

    6. Irom Maiden covers: INFINITE DREAMS or THE PROPHECY!!!! (If you haven't
heard these songs, you MUST check them out on IM's "Seventh Son" album

    7. Does anyone know when DT or Echolyn will be nearing Ann Arbor, MI?

            Enough for now-=> -John

    Hey,

I realize this has probably been posted here before, but I'm new to the
list, so please bear with me. :) I'm wondering if anyone knows of a list
(or knows about specific ones) of quality and track information for the
various live/import DT boots out there, specifically the ones available
via CDnow (Dream Out Loud, Home Sweet Home, Live in Long Island, Lords of
Sound, Milan 1993). I'd appreciate any info... I'm looking to buy one of
these (if any of them are of high quality, soundboard preferred) because I
was amazed by their performances the two times I've seen them live, and on
    LAtM.

Oh, in response to the recent thread about careers and stuff, I'm a
full-time sysadmin for a big ISP in Maryland (Digex). I'm a big fan of
Dream Theater, Queensryche, Rush, and other "progressive" style bands.

Really? From the first listen on, I've interpreted Hollow as Kevin's
observation of someone who refuses religion and spirituality, and just
becomes a hollow shell of a human being. Lines like "I never search for
nothing I can't find", "In the first place get that shit out of my face,
it'll only make me happy anyway", and "I never watch a channel I can't
change" lead me to feel this person is afraid to commit to anything and
take a chance. Oh well, I'm not very good at arguing lyric interpretations,
it just caught me by surprise how differently we view this song.

Change o' subject: band transition time

The first (and so far, only) time I've seen DT (the Mirage, Mpls, MN, I&W
tour), I had to leave during the fourth song because my girlfriend had a
panic attack, probably brought on by having to stand in a tightly-packed,
smoky crowd for _45 minutes_ between the opening band leaving and DT coming
on. Some comments on the list and from friends who have seen DT have
mentioned that it's practically standard for a 45+ min break before DT. So,
    my questions:

    1) Is a 45+ min stage change standard for DT?

    2) If so, is there a known reason?

I can't remember any other concert I've seen that has had that long of a
break, or at least one where I've seen techs working most of that time
setting up. If I remember correctly, the last tech I saw was ~20 min after
    the opening band.

I've been listening to Flotsam since about 89 or so. All of my friends
    that
listen to them think that 'Quatro' sucks, but in my opinion it's their best

album. If you really like them I would suggest that you pick up 'No Place
    for
Disgrace'. That album was recorded when Jason Newsted (Metallica) was still

writing songs and, I think, playing bass for them. That album has some
exteremly cool songs on it. Then, if you like that, pick up their two other

albums (I'm not to sure what their titles are because I've been listening
    to
    nothing but DT since 92).

    =========================

First of all I will be petty. It's "cuatro." You know, Spanish for "four?"

As someone with a BA in Spanish it is my duty to correct you!! Secondly,
on NPFD Jason Newsted DOES NOT play bass. Some of the songs on NPFD were
leftovers from the early days so jason got writing credit. Troy Gregory,
    who in my
opinion is much better than JN, plays here. He went on to record When the
Storm Comes Down for F&J and then Prove You Wrong with Prong. These days
he (according to Kelly Smith, drummer for Flots) lives in Michigan doing
    nothing.

On the concept album thread, I vote for Seventh Son of a Seventh Son over
any other, just because i like it better than QR, and I never much liked
    old Rush
    or Pink Floyd.

I just got done eating, and when I logged in, I saw that Carmen had written: =============== this is for the Flotsam & Jetsam discussion. The last poster said that Jason Newsted was on No Place For Disgrace. This is not true. Jason played on only one album, 'Doomsday for the Deciever.' The following albums, 'When the Stom Comes Down','No Place for Disgrace', and 'Cuatro' all had different base players. they finally stuck with the base player from Cuatro and made 'Drift.' this is the first time they have made two albums with the same base player. by the way, Kerrang! gave Cuatro 5 stars. That almost never happens. Well, I

just thought I'de pass all of that on. I don't have the CDs on me so I cannot check the base players names, sorry. Hope this helps. Later, Carmen ========================== Not true. Like I said Jason Newsted played on Doomsday for the Deceiver, Troy Gregory played on No Place for Disgrace AND When the Storm Comes Down.

Jason Ward has played on Cuatro (NOT QUATRO, DAMMIT!) and Drift. Oh, they played "bass." I don't know what "base" they played, maybe they have a group softball team. (Or what drugs they take...) I also saw someone beat me to citing SSOASS from Maiden in the concept debate. Sometimes even the speed of the internet isn't fast enough. Dream Theater? Oh yeah. This is the DT list. Hmm. Not much to say. How come nobody ever answered that guy's question about the Serial Mom credits? Or was that in one of the phantom Ytsejams that I never got? Enough! -- Kevin Madden (kwmadden@usa.pipeline.com) Go Wings in 95!! Down 2 games to none. I am not worried. Yet. Call me on Friday.

I think I'm going to jump onto this bandwagon right now!

I have a _terrible_ time trying to distinguish which album of DT's I think is better. I'm afraid I must leave out WDaDU--just personal preference. :) When I got Images and Words, it changed my life. Seriously. I was no longer the same person. Dream Theater changed the way I look at music, life, myself, EVERYTHING. Although Geoff Tate was the catalyst that spawned the development of my "rock tenor," James LaBrie totally changed the way I sing. Kevin Moore's lyrics showed me that "pretty" lyrics were not always synonymous with a typical lyrically empty prog song. John Petrucci played way too f-ing FAST--and I loved it! John Myung can gallop like Steve Harris, but with the variation and taste of Geddy Lee. And, Mike Portnoy could beat the crap out of a drum set. When I listened to I&W I saw pictures and heard voices in my head. The voices said, "kill...kill...kill..." Just kidding! With I&W, I finally found a band that had everything.

Having said that, let me tell you about Awake. I never thought an album cover could be more perfect than that of I&W. Then there was Awake. It was more realistic, yet more etherial. It was darker, yet more vivid. This was an album by the people that I had given a year of my life to. It told the story of someone who has it all, but has nothing but confusion and despair in his head. Where the I&W lyrics cut, the Awake lyrics _stabbed_. I&W slaps you in the face, but Awake sinks its big, sharp teeth in and doesn't let go. I, to this day, can't listen to Voices while doing anything else because I get totally lost in the music, the words, and the emotions. And on top of that-- IT'S HUGE!!! The production is near perfection.

    I'll continue later...

Anyways, he created a false complaint about me, and terminated my account on AOL. He did this because he mail-bombed me, so I reported him to TOS and he was booted off the system as well. Obviously, I will be making a case about this to TOS so I can clear my name, but in the meantime I will not have an e-mail account until further notice. I will most likely switch to another service, since AOL is such a horrible service. But for now, you can contact me through my borhter's account -- gchew@liii.com. I will definitely have an account in a couple of months, since I will be going to college in the fall. But who knows? I might sign up under the service that my brother is using soon! Well, I'll get back to you if there are any developments, and I will talk to all of you soon! Thank you so much!

    Yours, Jeff =)

I recently bought King's X's Dogman and noticed the dog was green. I think I've seen versions of this CD with a blue dog and even a yellow dog! I was wondering if there is a difference or are they just getting creative on us?

    That's all. Tanx.

Hey Jammers, Well, i seem to have opened up quite a can of worms with this I&W vs. Awake thing. Well, I've got another one. I guess i thought that more people liked I&W better than Awake, and that seemed to be true. But, at least a lot of people spoke up that they did like Awake a lot too. Well, maybe i can get a little discussion going on this opinion:

    I DON'T REALLY LIKE METROPOLIS.

I think DT has made many, many songs better than this one. Now, let me clarify before I get a knife in the head: * I admit that Metropolis is technically an amazing song. They do stuff with that one that noone else can do. * I admit that Metropolis is very different and original compared to most rock music. It is good because of this.

BUT, someone in an earlier post described Metropolis as "masturbatory". I cannot agree more. Metropolis is too long. It does not (to me) flow well. It sounds very contrived, almost like they started writing it and said," All right, we want a song with one of THESE, and one of THESE and one of THESE, even if they don't really fit together well. " Well, I don't think it does fit together well. Metropolis certainly doesn't have the continuity of a great DT song like Surrounded (which is, by the way, a beautiful song. Where did DT get such a wonderfully bright song to put on such a wonderfully dark album? ANSWER: From Rush. That song definitely shows their Rush influence). Even Learning to Live and Take the Time, two very kaleidoscopic songs, seem to flow better than Metropolis, to me anyway. The first DT song that my friend who introduced me to the band played for me was Metropolis, and my initial reaction was, " Well, they sure packed everything into that song." (Including those little timbale fills, which I still think are AWFUL-very out of place. Like yelling, "Hey look, I own a pair of timbales!"). I still pretty much feel that way.

All right, now that I've endangered my life with that little tidbit, let me just add this: Petrucci vs. Eddie is a hell of a match-up, but I think it's a major bad call to say that Petrucci is a "better" player. It's especially bad to imply that Petrucci has accomplished more with his music. Let's not forget something here: This is EDDIE VAN HALEN. He changed guitar forever. He was a revolutionary running on pure talent, and he caused ripples. Petrucci is AMAZING, but he is still another Berklee School of Music chops-meister. What really sets DT apart from the rest of the technically-awesome Berklee products is that they can write great songs. But I don't see Petrucci having as much impact on the guitar world as Eddie did.

I guess a good comparison is David Robinson vs. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in hoops. Robinson's awesome, a complete player, and he may be stronr, faster, and a better player than Kareem was (maybe). But as great as Robinson is, and even if Kareem couldn't beat him one-on-one, and even if Kareem wishes he could be more like Robinson, the fact is, KAREEM CHANGED THE GAME FOREVER. The NCAA outlawed the dunk because of Kareem. The center position was never the same again after Kareem. Robinson never had that kind of impact, and he never will, and even if he can do everything Kareem could and mor, he just doesn't do it the same way.

All right, that's too long. sorry.

    Nathan Meezan

    Jeff,

That's too bad about your AOL account. Mine is still temporarily down as well. Of course, I hope that you get an account as soon as you can. I can understand how must feel since the Internet is a major part of one's life and it's kind of hard to get away from it. =)

    Yours,

    Erin

    Greetings Jammers,

A few digests ago someone asked how many of the people on the list were "new" Dream Theater fans. I am. I discovered DT about a month ago over the internet. Someone posted a message to the Marillion mailing list asking people to list their five favorite bands. DT appeared on more than one of those lists, and I just happened to hear "Pull Me Under" on the radio in the same week and was impressed by it. I asked the Marillion fans which DT album I should buy and I got about 6 or 7 e-mail messages all of which recommeded IAW. (This is relevant to the current IAW debate.) I purchased both albums the same day (one store had Awake used), listened to them both, then listened to IAW again. I now think Awake is a great album, but it didn't immediately impress me. IAW got me emotionally involved from the first hearing. I wonder whether this was the experience for anyone else.

I've noticed that echolyn has been much discussed on this list, so I'll have to throw in my advice. In YTSEJAM 860 Tim A. says of echolyn "believe me they _will_ grow on you". I've had the album 'As the World' for about a month now and I've really tried to give it a chance. It hasn't grown on me and I don't like it anymore than the first time I heard it (anyone interested in a used copy?). There are some great moments in As the World, but the album lacks coherency. I get the feeling that, in many songs, the lyrics don't fit the music, and the melodic changes are too sudden and chaotic. I think this album/band would appeal to a certain class of prog rock fans (let me tell you who you are). People who are into the jazzy/experiental side of prog, such as King Crimson and ELP will probably like echolyn. Although I like some songs by KC and ELP, neither has produced a single album that I enjoy listening to in its entirety, and both have written songs that just "get on my nerves". There are several songs on the echolyn album that do just that.

I must comment that I've found this the "friendliest" band-discussion list on the net. For one thing, everyone seems to know each other and is interested in other subscribers as people. For another, no one complains about unimportant things like the length of messages, people's sigs, or discussion of topics not directly related to DT. Reading those complaints is always a lot more annoying than what ever the writer is complaining about.
