When WDADU came out I thought DT was the greatest band I'd had ever heard,
Then I&W came out with James singing and it blew me away, Then when Awake
was released I said, "What Happened?". But the Album grew on me and became
my most listened to album in my collection. Now that I got a freind of
mine into DT, he just loves I&W and I find myself listening to I&W more
    than Awake. Weird.

Sorry for the lack of DT content, but this list seemed like a good source
    for my question:

Has anyone heard of a forthcoming Alex Lifeson solo
project? I heard Sabastian Back was singing a track on it? Thanx in

I personally think the Wall is a huge excercise in Roger Waters

the first disc :( Mindcrime is great as is Brave by Marillion, Misplaced
Childhood, Seventh Son of a Seventh son by Iron Maiden and Dark Side of
the Moon. I couldn't really tell you which is my favourite, 'coz that

Absolutely agree here. I was watching Live in Tokyo yesterday (when I
should have been studying for an exam :) and found Mike's live sound
with his shitty old Tama Imperialstar sounded better than the triggers
on I&W. My band has tried triggers before and we hate them! Then again
our drummer does have a beautiful Tama DX Pro kit with a massive 9"
snare drum. I reckon the overall sound on Awake is much more open and
clean, you can hear all the instruments and it just seems to hang
together a lot better. I really don't like David Prater as a producer,
anybody who has heard some of his work with Firehouse would correct in
thinking a lot of the albums he does sound the same. John P's guitar
sound is awesome on Awake too...

    > Galactic Cowboys. And select Kansas albums.
    >

True enough, I like Awake firstly because it has great songs and
secondly because they didn't try to do I&W Mk II. It could have been
quite easy to do that and be almost guaranteed of a hit, but they seem
to be a little more intelligent than that :) I personally like bands
who do go their own way, and Hairball's examples are good examples of
    that...

    My fave DT moments:

    1. The fast keyboard/guitar run just before the Keys solo in Scarred
    2. The first verse of Learning to Live, with just the bass, drums and
    keys
    3. Opening riff of Under a Glass Moon on LiT
    4. The back to back guitar and keys solos in UAGM
    5. The guitar chords (ala Eddie Van Halen) at about 4:10 in Erotomania
    6. JP's first solo in Erotomania, sounds a lot like Allan Holdsworth
    7. The "Try to push me 'round the world some more" vocal in CIAW
    8. Chorus for CIAW
    9. The ultra fast band bit in AFIL on LATM
    10. Mike's drum intro for 6:00

This might sound stupid, but I am realitivly new to Dream Theatre. Not all that new, I own there three main recorded albums (When Day..., I&W, Awake) and InstruMental II. I plan to get some of the other items they have put out soon. My question is about ACOS as the subject implies. Does ACOS have words to it? It is on the Instrumental II and as the name implies is instrumental. But many of the songs that are on Instrumental I have had words added to them and Metropolis Part I, which is on Instrumental II also has had words added so I would like to know if ACOS has had words added as well. Also, as a general question, what recorded material buy DT should I seek to purchase? What I know of is as follows: InstruMental I, The Live Album from Japan(forgot the name), and there is also a copy of what I believe is their first demo back from the Majesty days that I can get. What else is there?

    Thanks.

this is for the Flotsam & Jetsam discussion. The last poster said that Jason Newsted was on No Place For Disgrace. This is not true. Jason played on only one album, 'Doomsday for the Deciever.' The following albums, 'When the Stom Comes Down','No Place for Disgrace', and 'Cuatro' all had different base players. they finally stuck with the base player from Cuatro and made 'Drift.' this is the first time they have made two albums with the same base player. by the way, Kerrang! gave Cuatro 5 stars. That almost never happens. Well, I just thought I'de pass all of that on. I don't have the CDs on me so I cannot check the base players names, sorry. Hope this helps.

Well, this is my second post about I&W vs. Awake, but I didn't get every- thing in last time, and I had to to post today. ;)

To Jason Hartman: I'm one relatively new DT fan. I got into them only last winter, I had never heard of them until I started getting into some other relatively prog stuff (QR, King's X), and I heard stuff like "Promised Land sounds too much like Dream Theater", and "If you like QR, you'll love DT", so I went out and got I&W. From the opening strains of PMU, to the amazing outro to LTL, I knew I'd found a new favourite band.

I got Awake once I'd had time to let I&W sink in. I was slightly disappoint- ed at first with Awake, but I guess I was expecting something like I&W, and I can see why that was the case at the time - but looking back, I wouldn't want another I&W, the more diversity, the better - DT are talented enough musicians, that no matter what they do, it'll kick ass. (BTW, have you received my money order for the CD, tape and video yet? Been meaning to e-mail you about that...)

Now, about I&W vs. Awake. I didn't know how to express this before, but I think I'll do a little better this time. :) Someone mentioned they liked Awake better because the lyrics are more realistic, and the songs are rawer, and not over-produced. Well, those are pretty much the reasons I prefer I&W.

First, as far as the lyrics go (although, they're not a huge determining factor for me), I'd have to say I prefer I&W. I think the lyrics on I&W are more poetic (or better poetically, whatever), and the fact that they are mostly fantasy appeals to me. I mean, it's good to have a bit of both, ultimately I'd prefer an album that has a bit of both poetic, fantasy-type lyrics, and then stuff like "Voices".

Secondly, is that they had much longer to work on the music and refine it. I think they managed to add an amazing feel to the music, especially with the keyboard work, which was much better than on Awake. The music basically flows really well, and that appeals to me a lot. I don't really like songs like "Scarred" where it seems more often than not, one riff follows another and they just don't flow together at all, it just doesn't sound right/natural.

I guess the bottom line for me, is that I&W is like a fantasy, the music seems sur-real, and the over-production job (those snares are getting annoying though - gee, someone just HAD to mention it, I'd probably have never noticed... :) ), and heavy use of keyboards seems to add to that. It's not just the production though, because even live, the songs on I&W stand apart from Awake just as much as they do on the album. Evern time I sit down and listen to I&W - and I know this will sound corny - it's like some surreal experience, and all my other thoughts get left behind.

Well, I guess that's about all I have to say on the subject. Sorry for the length, but if you don't have all day to read this stuff, but what can I say, I have all day to write it. =)

Somebody suggested that DT should do a Maiden cover. At first I thought "Please! No!", cause Maiden has really bored me the past few years, but then I changed my mind.

I think some of the older stuff could probably sound cool if DT did something with it. They could play "Moonchild" or anything from Maidens first three albums. Oh well, I guess it won't happen.

Now for my thoughts on the ongoing I&W / Awake debate. It seems very simple to me: they're both great albums! They're not flawless, but still great.

As for what I do, I'm working at Norway's National Library in Mo i Rana, a small town located just south of the Arctic Circle. Here I register films and film related material.

I think this post is getting to long and boring. Sorry...

My apologies if these exist somewhere out there, but I haven't seen them yet... a ( ) means I am unsure of the word/phrase.

    Don't Look Past Me

<dialog> I don't know... I feel a lot of distance and I feel far away I'll see you later...

I have seen you born before me I have watched you die I have heard every word you've said to me Leave no question in your mind There is no brighter star to guide you Don't look past me to the sun, the sun is (life) I am the sun...

So close the door behind him He wanders slowly to the car Trying to lift his heavy heart

<some dialog I can't make out, followed by...> Feel bad bout this? Just, just let me feel bad about this!

I'm through just getting by Countless times a friend has told me Watch out for the waves Now it seems the sea will be my grave And still you speak to save me Even though the water is much colder now Even though the water is much colder now

Sometimes you can act on intuition Sometimes you can use a different point of view I've found that in such a position I could always come to you <sun>I've seen you weep I have seen you tired and lonely <without you> But it only takes one heart <heart> To lift you up and send you on Can you understand the life I've shown you Understand it's me (I've given you)

I have seen you born before me I have watched you die I have heard every word you've said to me I have no question in my mind There is no brighter star to guide me Don't look past me to the sun, don't look past me to the sun, the sun is...

So love is broken (They) are asking me how and the hell When you don't even know how that feels I don't need a thousand reasons When someone starts to cry When someone says their heart needs lifting Don't ask how far ask how high

I have seen you born before me I have watched you die I have heard every word you've said to me Leave no question in your mind There is no brighter star to guide you Don't look past me to the sun, the sun is (life) Leave no question in your mind There is no brighter star to guide you Don't look past me to the sun, ( ???? )

I am in the process of doing them now - I had a REALLY bad semester and an equally bad second VCR (James Bako and Mike Burstin can vouch for this), and couldn't make them then. I posted on here that they

are going to be done soon.

I had made the mistake of not saying to you or James B. not to send me anything until you got my stuff, and I made sure I said that to another trader.

Again, I apologize and understand you're getting pissed off, but they are being done now, along with an extra thing added along, and will be there soon. If you don't trade with me again, that's fine, I wouldn't wat to trade with me either (although its easier to trade to myself).....

    My apologies again,

    Al Balkiewicz vocals, Half Naked

    trader extraordinaire (not)

Also does anyone have any live videos >> or tapes/cds of Marty's pre- Megadeth band, Cacaphony?? >> How does every feel about Megadeth?? "Time has a way of taking time and ;oneliness is not only felt by fools! Alone I called to ease the pain; yearning to be held by you... ...alone so alone - I'm lost consumed by the pain. Pain. Pain. Pain. Won't you hold me again?!? You just laughed, "Ha ha!", you BITCH! My whole life was work built on the past, time has come when all things must pass. This good thing passed away!" - In My Darkest Hour So Far, So Good, So What! Megadeth was absolutely, positively, without any 'shadow of doubt' my all time favorite band circa 1984-1989. For five long, torturous years Dave Mustaine kept on putting into words and song all the frustration and angst that inflamed my soul! _So Far, So Good, So What_ is STILL one of my favorite albums. "Mary Jane", "In My Darkest Hour", and "Liar" are superb examples of the style and attitude that made them my favorite for so long. Then, a bizarre thing happened. Jeff Young, the guitar on _SF, SG, SW?_ was taken from us before his time. Dave replaced him with your boy, Marty. (Now here's the part you're gonna flame me for...) Marty Friedman doesn't belong in that band. His style differs completely from the classic raw and angry sound that Mustaine championed so well. On _Rust in Peace_, Dave held on to his stylistic vision, except for the 'parade-ish' styles on the interlude between "Holy Wars" and "The Punishment Due" and the happy-go-lucky guitar on "Hangar 18", the album conformed quite nicely to my idea of Megadeth. "Lucretia" RULES! But with the release of _Countdown to Extinction_ and the following fiasco of _Youthanasia_, Megadeth has become 'Megadumb.' I refuse to buy the new album. If Dave kicks Marty out of the band and gets back on heroin NOW, he might be able to save his career. I await the flames of this, my personal Hell... - Rob "Beware my friends as you pass by as you are now so once was I. As I am now so you must be prepare my friends to follow me!" - Mary Jane So Far, So Good, So What? PS: Dream Theater is now, and may always be, my FAVORITE BAND! I am no longer a fan of the current Megadeth. (This is a disclaimer?)

Here is a list of some of my favorite shredders (in order): John Petrucci Marty Friedman Joe Satriani Jason Becker Randy Rhoads (R.I.P.) Zakk Wylde Paul Gilbert Alex Skolnick

Petrucci - 'nuff said, he's THE guitarist of the century!!!! If you had a chance to hear any of these huys solo stuff, they're ALL incredibly AMAZING! Some people might gripe about Zakk becasue of his southern influences, but I think he's got his own thinng going that's very cool (Pride & Glory is actually a good band/album). Marty Friedman - somepeople who've listened to Cacophony might say that Jason Becker is more talented. Well, I think that Backer is TECHNICALLY more talented (only by a centimeter) but Marty Friedman is a MUCH better composer! His three solo albums are INCREDIBLE! The later two (Scenes, Introduction) are better. Friedman's musical vision is outstanding! (My feelings on Megadeth, well, the latest album isn't NEARLY as good as Rust in Peace, and Countdown). Satch - 'nuff said, he's soooooooo smooth! Jason Becker - like I said, not as musical as Friedman, mostly technical Randy - 'nuff said, he's a legend Paul Gilbert - a great guitar player, doesn't show off in MR BIG as much as his solo stuff Alex Skolnick - diving into the jazzier(yet still metal-ish) realms of the guitar after his TESTAMENT days, with a metal-ish twist, he's got a unique sound

Sorry aobut length. Later, John Nguyen

VH has minimal skills and ever since David Lee Roth left, they haven't written a decent song. JP in FAR better that VH. JP in in the same league as Satriani, and Vai, a class in which VH could only dream to belong to.

Well Dave - I can't tell you much but I can tell you this: NOTHING'S CLOSED YET. The guys are deliberating - nothing's still permenant and the vocalist (this labrie fellow) is not a sure thing - they're gonna have to go through a lot in order to get along and stuff - but we'll keep each other posted.

Ain't the 'jam a great thing? We know everything before anybody else.

BTW: I heard Dream Theater are preparing for a third album. I can't wait.

See ya all and keep up the nose for news attidute!
