OK, where was I...
Now that I've said everything I like about both albums, now I have the
unfortunate task of posting everything I don't like. As far as I&W, I hate
<of course> the _sound_ of the triggered snare. I think the keys are a
little too much in most parts and make the whole recording sound "soft."
The bass, of course, is a little masked by the mix, probably only because
Prater decided it was overplayed, so he changed it after J Myung went home.
The guitar sounds have no variation--there's "clean," "crunch," and "solo."
This is really too bad. The lyrics are a little too pretty. Like so many
publications have said about Bon Jovi: "In this day and age, no one has
time for 'riding steel horses.'" I think the lyrics are classic prog--right
down to the overwrought pretentions of the imagery. What the hell is "glass
moonlight?"
Awake has its share of problems, too. I think James's vocals are _way_ over-
done. James's is going to murder his voice if he doesn't stop doing that
rock singer crap. I&W he sings totally clean and it's beautiful. I wish there
was some way we could _make_ him sing in the I&W style all the time. I hate
the sound of James inhaling before every line on Awake, too. Having said that,
I hate the sound of his noise gate releasing before every line on I&W. Maybe
they could have used a better expander or something. If the keys were
overdone on I&W, then they were underdone on Awake. Not enough shredding on
Kev's part, perhaps because of the split and since you all know how I feel
about that I won't get into it. No complaints at all about the guitar or bass.
The drums sound great _except_ for the snare. Personally, I would have buried
the snare under a million gates and compressors and reverbs until it sounded a
little more like that triggered snare from I&W. Other than that, the drum
sound blows me away. Listening to Awake, you'll never forget that drums are
made of WOOD.
The Awake lyrics give testimony to the fact that it is indeed possible to
write beautiful, coherent, soul-baring songs in plain speech--without having
to use a lot of odd "pretty" words. The songwriting on Awake is flawless.
Flawless, that is, except for that atrocity of an album closer. It is simply
tacked on there at the end, _after_ the logical album closer. I just wish it
was somewhere else, because other than the complete choppiness of Erotomania
it's the only thing I don't like about the album, and having it as the last
track always leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth.
Well that's about it. I didn't start writing with any idea of what my choice
for favorite album was, but I think I'll have to go with Awake, if only for its
sheer BULK! It is huge. I still love I&W, but Awake <along with QR's Promised
Land> is the soundtrack of my life.
And please don't think I am trying to force my opinion on anyone. If you are
so compelled, let the flames begin...

Hello all,
I just wanted to add my 0.02 to the Flotsam & Jetsam thing. Yes
it is true that Jason Newsted only played on Doomsday For the Deciever,
but he wrote about half the songs on their next album, No Place For
Disgrace. IMHO NPFD is F&J's best LP, and if you don't agree, TS. <g> I
think When the Storm Comes Down is a very low point for the band, but
with Cuatro, they seem to have recovered from losing their best songwriter.
As far as the Megadeth\Friedman thing, I have to disagree. I do
think that The older albums (Rust In Peace, etc...) are better than the
new stuff (from Countdown on), but that's not Marty's fault. That's
Dave's fault because he's trying to break through (ala Metallica) or
something. I think he's still a great songwriter (the new album has some
catchy tunes for certain), but he's just not as aggressive. He's trying
too damn hard to be accepted by everyone (in the age of hip hop\do wop
oh well, whatever, nevermind)
I just appreciate the fact that they're still around unlike some of my
other favorite bands (ie: Varga or the Jon Butcher Axis), and still making good
music. It's just not thrash anymore. (Of course I do long for the days
of eight minute mostly instrumental Megadeth songs, but I'll take what I
can get since Metallica can't be bothered with such trivial things as new
albums).
May we all pray to heaven that DT has the kind of longevity that they deserve!
Outta here, and I promise to have nothing but DT content the next time I
post.
Bracken
P.S. I'm flattered that my ramblings about the Doors connection are
going into the FAQ. Wow, you really like me, you really like me!

IMHO the Crow is one of the greatest pieces of comic book literature ever
created. A great piece of work from a mind that was obviously tortured by
loss. Although I didnt think the movie was as bad as you say...matter of fact
i thought that the movie turned out pretty good concidering Brandon Lee was
killed in the middle of making it. I think a lot of people on the list would
like it. The love and the loss that is displayed in this work will send chills
up your spine.
It is sold in a graphic novel now which ismuch easier to find and is
cheaper than the original books. I highly recommend this.

I think you have a good idea there Scott about taking over the radio
station. Maybe I can get Ties to come in from Berlin and some other
Jammers from other parts of Germany and we can stage some sort of coup.
I will need someone that can speak German though so they don't think that
it is just some American gone crazy storming the station *laugh*.
About the whole European tour being canceled. Well I know DT played at
the Rock over Germany show near Hamburg but I haven't heard anything
about headlining shows yet. I guess we will have to wait until the
people that are going to the Saarbruken (forgive my spelling) tell us
something.
And finally about alt.music.dream-theater. I don't think this group is
widely gotten by many Universities etc.. I know we don't get it at
Wisconsin and we don't get it here at DESY either. I think the best way
to get DT news is through this list and maybe sometimes
alt.r-n-r.m.prog. Hopefully people will post to both of these as well as
a.m.d-t when they have something important to say.
Three days until Rage, Iced Earth and Discredit *yeah*.

IMPORTANT FOR ANY CYGNUS OR UNPLUGGED BUYERS
Hi all!
I'm typing this in response to an idea about four or five people have
asked me to implement, and I want to know if the Jam would like me to do it,
or screw it. :) The idea is this:
"Produce Unplugged now and Cygnus later".
Now, before all of you who have mailed me Cygnus money have a heart
attack, allow me to explain. I've digitally mastered both shows on the old
computer here and sent the result to DAT, so I could still go either way. My
blanks are being shipped/handled/whatever-it-is-they-do-that-takes-so-long to
me as we speak, and I could still make the press master for either one,
without forsaking the other.
The way I would figure on doing it would be, to allow all of you who
have paid for Cygnus, to use that payment for Unplugged. (gotta think of a
good name for the Unplugged CD... I'm sure the thesaurus will help) The UNP
CD was going to cost $23 anyway. I certianly don't want any Cygnus buyers to
feel cheated, so I would offer you the option of:
1. Having me convert your payment for Cyg into a payment for UNP;
2. Having me keep it until Cyg is available (which I am willing to do)
3. Having me refund it (which I will do if necessary).
Now, this is not a firm thing yet, just an idea; a proposal. The
overwhelmingly positive response on the Unplugged CD is what brought it about,
as the idea was mentioned to me quite a few times. Usually this advice took
the form of an email that said "HEY, MAKE UNPLUGGED FIRST, STUPID!" (grin) and
in one case, one Steve McMaster actually gave me the change idea.
If I get a ton of mail saying "hell yes Mike!" I'll go with it. If I
get a lot of "Don't do it; just do Cygnus" I won't switch 'em. Since those who
have paid have priority, I won't do it if it would mean alienating them or
having them feel cheated in ANY WAY.
Please, let me know. I'll post to the Jam what you all thought. Thanks
much for your time. :)

Hi Jammers!
Well, me again and my "misusing-the-jam-for-other-things". :)
I need suggestions for a title of a song that will be on the CD of my band!
The song is about how TV influences people in a bad way and so I'm searching
for a title where are for example 2 words in it that begin with
'T' and 'V'. It could also be more than 2 words but the 'T' and 'V'
words should be in there. But the title should show this bad side of
the TV, not the good!
Pleeeeeeeze don't flame me for this. I'm just a poor german boy
in the need of help from my american jamming friends... :)
And PLEEEEEEZE email me directly. Don't answer to the jam!

Thanks in advance.

it's not DT related. I received a copy of Freetime Magazine (a local

to Buffalo w/ FLOTSOM AND JETSOM. I thought that whoever started the

BTW, this is for Warren in Oregon. I need your snail mail address. I

Message-ID: <2fe96e6f5e43002@max3.rrze.uni-erlangen.de>
Greetings Jammers! This post includes concert info from Lichtenfels in
Germany (6/21), and by my side is fellow Jammer Mark Stahl (who was very
fortunate to be vacationing in Germany at the time!).
Before we go into the concert, we'd like to add a couple tour dates to the
ones that Ties has already posted... these are from the back of the current
tour t-shirt, so they should be pretty solid:
2.7 - Muenchen (Germany)
9.7 - St. Gallen (Italy?)
And now onto the concert - this includes the set list, so we'll add the
obligatory
SPOILERS! SPOILERS!
message.
The set list: relatively similar (if not the same) to what some people
mentioned from the New York shows. We'll throw a few random comments in as
well...
1. Under a Glass Moon - balls opener... we were trying to guess beforehand
what they were going to open with, but didn't guess
this one.
2. Mirror/Lie - some problems with John P.'s volume level were solved relative-
ly quickly, so we could once again hear his ripping solos.
3. Lifting Shadows off a Dream
4. A Change of Seasons - intro was definitely different, as well as some of the
transitions between sections. Some lyrics were
changed from the original, and, for all of you who
have been stressing about the usage of FUCK, James
did not sing it in the version we heard/saw. Our
opinion of this song is that it's going to really
appeal to a lot of people, but others are not going
to like it due to the changes from the original.
But what's new? look at the differences in opinion
of I&W and Awake?
5. Surrounded - really awesome audience sing-a-long (encouraged by James)
6. A Mind Beside Itself - good Derrick intro (although it would be cool if it
was longer); naturally a good audience sing-a-long
with Silent Man
7. Pull me Under
--- Encore 8. Wait for Sleep (acoustic) - absolutely no keyboards, but the John/John acoustic interplay was great. 9. Learning to Live - First time we saw this in concert - naturally a perfect last song for the concert. John P.'s solos were at their jammin' best.general comments: - This time I really watched John Myung play, and although his sound often got washed out by Mike's bass drums, just watching his fingers move was often mesmerizing. - James sang _excellently_ (no cracks) - some excellent screams, and he often encouraged audience participation. - Mark had a (perhaps) once in a lifetime concert experience right at the end of Learning to Live - he was the recipient of a certain something from Mike Portnoy... but we'll leave you in suspense for now (he'd like to give his own rendition from his account in California when he flies back tomorrow). - After the concert we had a chance to meet all the members, although due to time constraints they couldn't hang around that long. - My Subconscious CD is now signed by Mike Portnoy! yahoooo! - hey Hairball - I said hi to Mike P. for you - he says hi back! - Mike Bahr - Mike P. mentioned he has 5 copies of SubCon. Fuck yeah!
that about raps it up... to all the German Jammers - get ready to sing along with the new (and improved) version of ACoS...
btw - as far as we know, the Euro Tour _is not cancelled_ !

I talked to Alex on June 5,1993 and he said he was forming a new band. he said it was going to be called something like 42nd Street. Did this ever happen? I talked to him at a Testament show, and yes, he says he still hangs out with the 'ol band. This show was the night before my first, and only, Dream Theater show. During the show Chuck Billy (Vox) announced that Dream Theater was all at the Theater that night. I bumped into most of them, and added them to my autograph collection. (I also have all of Testament, including Skolnick.)
Skolnick is a bad man (meaning good), and I'd like to know what he's doing now.

My two favorite newish (atleast for me) bands:
Type-O-Negative- They have three albums. Try the third, "Bloody Kisses" it is one of my favorite albums period! If you saw Queensryche, you probably saw them. Slow, heavy, pissed. I like 'em.
Life of Agony- Great album. It is a conceptual album too, for you conceptual album fans! Kind of like STP on steroids. Maybe like old COC.
Try these two, and if you don't like 'em you can blame me.

'jammers,
I posted the original message about Flotsam and Jetsam and would like to say thanks to those who responded. I intend to get NPFD and DFTD ASAP.
To Arlea: Since you've only been on a short time you obviously missed a lot of petty arguments about non-DT related stuff, sigs, lengths of posts, etc. For me, I just hit the "+" to page down past discussion/arguments about bad words, eddie vs. JP, misspelled words, etc. It's not worth clogging up the digest with another complaint!
As far as Metropolis goes, I love it. As far as coherency goes, what I like about DT is that they don't follow traditional trends. There are changes from distorted heavy parts, to clean parts, rhythm and tempo changes, etc and that's great. Also, it's challenging as a guitarist to practise these parts and get them down, which is very satisfying. I agree that there might me a mish-mash of different ideas but I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Variety is the spice of life!

'jammers,
Someone posted a web site with CD samples for a new band. I downloaded one file (.au) but the level was so high that all I heard was noise. I turned the volume down as low as possible, but it was then lower volume noise! Does anyone know anything about that?
Also, is there a place where new bands can send their tapes to be sampled and available for the computer literate public? This address could advertise around the newsgroups and get people to download the files.

Well, that's very nice! If she dumps you tomorrow then Space-Dye Vest will completely make you think of her, with The Mirror/Lie a close second.
I'm sorry, I probably shouldn't kid around about stuff like that, but it shows the contrast between I&W and Awake, LaBrie's singing, etc.

Yeah, great comparision, but the sky-hook didn't catch on like two-handed tapping! IMO, it's pointless to compare the two guitarists, but if all we had ever heard of Eddie was the last two albums, we wouldn't even have this thread going. Eddie's sounds like he's been in a slump for about 10 years. Some of those solos, if that was me, I'd have stopped half-way through, rewound the tape and done another take. Not that he sucks, we know the talent is in there somewhere.
Now, for some of my favorite Petrucci moments... I love the closing solo on Take the Time. You've got to crank it up as it fades out to here every last lick. Better yet, listen to a live version where he continues ripping well past the fade out part. Also, I have to squint my eyes and grit my teeth whenver I here the soaring high E near the end of the Lie solo. It's like a blinding flash of light.

Sorry bout the semi-DT content...
The Orservation:
Echolyn is very different, almost late 70's sounding, Styx, Queen, Jethro Tull, those type bands...not at all "90's" sounding. this is very refreshing that new music can have real content, not like the "little" bands like Bush or Offspring. They have "feeling" but that's about it, Echolyn has everything...although perhaps too much... :)
The Wish:
I just bought the newest Fates Warning, Inside Out and I think that if DT would ever cover a Fates song, "Monument" should be the one! That song ROCKS!!
Lates...

Please forgive my ignorance. Perhaps you discussed this while I was temporarily off the list while on vacation.
What is DT Unplugged all about? I assume it's another bootleg creation by Mr. Mike. But what's on it? Please let me know!

Hi all, let me jump in on this before it dies down:
1. I&W etc. After hearing it twice, WDADU just drove me mad, and DT became my fave band. Until this time I often wondered what's so special about Iron Maiden that made me like them more than ... ehhh ... for example AC / DC or Whitesnake or or or ... must have been some proggy (?) touch on the Powerslave LP or rather on the Somewhere In Time album. Anyway, after WDADU I suddenly knew what it was. I&W knocked me off from the *very first* listening, especially PMU. AWAKE really disappointed me ... the first time I listened to it, the second time I listened to it ... the third time ... I had to listen very often (couldn't believe it !) before it grew on me, but though there is really great stuff on it I still like I&W and WDADU more. These two seem more homogenous to me. On AWAKE I somehow like more the special moments (of which there are a lot of, nevertheless). BTW the intro of TKH on LATM is my absolute fave DT moment (at least at the moment).
2. Metropolis Was the only song on I&W I disliked. I was always happy when this mad part in it was over ... far too proggy for me at this time. Nowadays I think it is my fave song (very narrow before ... ok, no new poll here).
3. Maiden Even if I know there is no sense in suggesting something like that (because I don't think (i.e. dare to hope) DT will play Maiden cover), here are my suggestions: "The Duellists" (think of the instrumental middle part !!) or "Hallowed Be Thy Name". "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" would be very good, too, especially because of the heavy "rolling" rythm (one reason why I like PMU so...BTW what do you think about Clawfinger ?).
Of course everything only my ... errr ... how do you say ... two cents.
bye, MiWo

Man, you are sure lucky that this is not being posted to alt.music.vanhalen or alt.music.guitar, there are a lot of guitarists and other fans out there who still worship the ground that Eddie walks on. I am a diehard DT fan, but I still listen to and enjoy listening to VH and Eddie's playing. Technical wizardry is one thing but it gets you nowhere without feel. EVH embodies this in his "noodling" style. He is capable of producing killer solo's at the drop of a hat (that wicked harmonic in Beat it kills me every time I hear it). I'm sure JP is very skilled in improvisation and there is no argument about his feel, but EVH is more famous, makes more money and has been around a little bit longer in the business. That should count for something.
IMHO.
