    A few things

    1. Mike - "Acoustic Theater" that was me

    2. Jen - "Flight of Icarus" - Piece of Mind

    3. Jason H. - "Replacing Alex" - Can't happen, he is the only original member
left. When they first started, before first album was recorded,
it was John Rutsy, Lifeson and ? (can't remember). ? left and
                  in came Geddy Lee.

    4. Does anyone know if the Oct 94 RPM Wharehouse show was recorded in its
entirity. What I'm looking for specifically is, the I Mother Earth
performance. Mike Portnoy ventured onto the stage for one of their last
songs of the evening to play percussion with the band and even did a
mini solo, trading licks with IME's drummer. Did he do this at any other
venues of the Awake '94 Fall Tour.

While doing my usual cd-slumming, I found a few used copies of Echolyn's
"As The World" in a bargain bin. Since I already have a cd, I didn't pick
them up, but have now decided that I should offer to pick them up for those
on the list who are still sitting on the fence about this band.

So, if you would be interested in receiving this disc for *US$5* ppd (if
you're outside the US, cover the shipping difference), let me know. Yes,
folks, that's a grand total of $5 for an almost 70min cd; if you don't like
the album, you can probably sell it for that much.

There were only a few copies (I think 3, maybe 4 tops), so I'd like to ask
that this be reserved to those people who have really wanted to get it, but
haven't wanted to risk $15 on it.

Caveat/disclaimer #1: these are _used_ cds. I will _not_ buy any scratched
discs (which may lower the number of discs available).

Caveat/disclaimer #2: as you've probably noticed from list traffic, some
people love Echolyn, some hate them, some say they'll grow on you. I loved
it from the first listen in the cd store. Musically, I find them similar to
Gentle Giant (if you've heard of GG), and in many places the vocal
harmonies are similar to old Styx. They are _not_ DT! (but then, who is?)

If interested, e-mail me direct at pgor@netcom.com - I will let you know if
I can get a copy for you before you send the dough. I just hate seeing
music I enjoy in the used bins, even more so when they're discounted dirt
    cheap.

Hey, folks, long time no post! Just a couple of not too important
things. First of all, that guy who posted about Megadeth and Marty
Friedman has obviously got some problems, and I'm glad most people
ignored him (sorry I couldn't). You're right, Megadeth now is merely a
shell of the band they once were. . .however, Marty was the best addition
to that band since, I don't know, Nick Menza! Their lineup now is the
best they've ever had, and Rust in Peace is one of the finest albums ever
made--Marty's solos add such an air of class to the album, with Hangar 18
a shred masterpiece. Jeff Young and Chris Poland were both great, but
Marty's in a class by himself. Megadeth kind of sucks now because they
decided to sell out. Enough said.

    Concept albums:
Some great ones: Operation Mindcrime, Tales from Topographic Oceans, the
Wall, Final Cut, Animals, Misplaced Childhood, Brave, Clutching at
Straws, among others. To clear things up, neither Hemispheres nor 2112
are concept albums! And I have to say, that while the Pros and Cons of
Hitchhiking is pretty good, Radio KAOS and Amused to Death are both
HORRIBLE albums. Not only can Roger Waters not sing to save his life
anymore, he also forgot how to write songs!

Sorry no DT content, . . .hey, I like Awake better than I&W. Besides the
better production, I just thing the songs are better, more coherent. I
like musical masturbation better than the next guy, don't get me wrong,
and I know that when most bands say that they've "learned how to write
songs" or "they're concentrating on songwriting" it means they've put out
shit like the Sound of White Noise or Countdown to Extinction. However,
in this case, I really do things the songs are more well constructed.
Look at Scarred vs. Learning to Live, for example. I like LtL, but it
seems like they went out of their way to write a long song--they could
have ended it right before the bass solo, for example, and it would still
sound over--it feels like the parts are somewhat pasted together.
Scarred on the other hand, doesn't _feel_ long, and flows much better. I
think it still has the some "progressivity" to coin a word, but is better
    constructed.

Alright, this has gotten too damn long, and of course, it's just my
opinion, I could be wrong (to quote Dennis Miller).

    later, folks
    Dario

PS Buy the new Fear Factory--it's cool as shit! (And talk about your
fine production (ColinRichardson is the death metal producer of champions)).

Do you mean Myung's bad in "The Mirror" or just in general? As far as I
can tell, he usually doubles either the keyboard or guitar lines. That's
about as coherent and structured as you can get.

My favorite drummers have to go something like:

Mike Portnoy= has been my favorite since I got I&W in 1991

    Neil Peart

Will Calhoun= Anybody know what he's doing now?

Rod Morgenstein= Applaud me for my bravery, but I saw him with Kip
and the boys many years ago. Just last Dec. I saw him with the
    Dregs...he was absolutely awesome!!!

Dave Weckl= I've only heard "Heads Up!" by him, but it has some
    awesome drumming!

Mike Mangrini (Mangini?)= The new drummer for Extreme. I had never
even paid attention to the drums in this band because Paul Geary was
so simple, but I went to see their most recent tour (basically to
watch Nuno play) But Mike impressed the hell out of me! His solo
was outrageous, and he did some great things with the old tunes.
(They jammed the entire "Hot For Teacher" as an encore, for the Alex
    Van Halen fan!)

Alex Van Halen= He did not impress me much before OU812. After I saw
that tour and ALL the F.U.C.K. tours, he has shown that his hands are
a lot faster than what they used to be. He has some great time
    change feels, too.

    Hey Jammers!
I went to a DCM Drum and Bugle Corps competition last night 2
blocks from my house at my old high school in Rochester, MN. I thought
some of you might be interested to know that a corps called NITE EXPRESS had a
repertoire that consisted of 3 YES songs. They were _Roundabout_,
_Circus of Heaven_, and _Close to the Edge_. I'm not much of a Yes fan
so I can't comment on how well they did with it but I did easily
recognize the melody of _Roundabout_. Any of you Yes fans that live in
the midwest might wanna check out a DCM competition if it comes to your area.
I can post which cities and dates NITE EXPRESS attends if anyone is
interested. Just drop me some e-mail.

Really? I could have almost sworn it was a keyboard solo.

Queensryche concert: The Type O Neg keyboard guy looked like a freak with the

Kev just stands there plays, which in my opinion is much cooler than "getting

And I finally thought of a way to accurately describe DT to everyone:

All I know about "Little Green Bag" is that is a song by George Baker. I
haven't seen RD nor have I heard LGB, but what I do know is that George Baker
sails the seas of cheese here in Holland. He's best known for his band 'The
George Baker Selection' and schmalzy singalong songs like 'Una Paloma Blanca'
which was a big hit in Europe in the mid seventies. Really, *really* terrible
    stuff.

Mike Bahr, how about yet another DT project: a CD with all those DT covers.
There are many more that you haven't yet covered on Subconscious. There's
supposed to be a DT cover of the Swedish band Landberk! Now that's a song
that I really like to hear!

I was at the Parkpop festival in The Hague two days ago. It's probably
Europe's biggest outdoor festival (I read in a newspaper that about 400,000
people showed) and it's free too. It has a market with a fair deal of
bootlegs dealers and here I bought the 'Wake Up!' 2CD. All I can say is: Wow!
The quality of the recording is really excellent. It's from a digital radio
broadcast (24 Jan 95, somewhere in Japan) and it shows: crystal clear
instruments, very nice stereo separation, etc. It could have been a perfect
boot were it not for John Myung's bass sound. It sounds as if the bass has
been recorded at a volume level that was too high and became distorted. It's
very noticeable on a few songs, and that's a real shame because all the other
    instruments sound great.

It has two new bits of (instrumental) DT music: the first one is a
fusionesque piece that has JP doing some *great* soloing, the second one has
Derek Sherinian showing his keyboard prowess doing some probably improvised
jazzy piano and some searing synth stuff.

I've noticed that DT has been incorporating some jazzy stuff in their new
non-album bits. I've heard an extended version of TTT with two minutes of
very enjoyable jazz noodling, and the two pieces on Wake Up! also share this
trait. Have I spotted a new trend?

I would definitely recommend Kojiki. This is basically an orchestral
album which tells a Japanese tale. The music is very moving.

Ooh, ahh, ouch. Where did you get that idea about Myung?! What the hell has
he written anyway? LTL, which is a great song but that's all he's written.
If he'd write more tunes like LTL that would be cool. I would venture to
say that he has a very big hand in the bass lines at least. As for songs
though, let's hope Derik is as good a writer as he is a player.

    >How can ANYONE compile a list of great Bassists and forget Victor Wooten?

Easy. No one has heard of him. Unless you play bass, but, yeah, he's a
monster, and Bela Fleck is worth checking out, if for no other reason than
to hear how COOL a banjo can sound.

    >Also really cool is Michael Manring ("a deeply disturbed young man"),
    >who can easily be a band to himself.

I've seen him on tour with Micheal Hedges twice, and I even got to do the
bass-holding for Manring during his 3-bass solo. All I can say is he gives
hope to those of us with small hands. The man is a genious.

In the last jam , someone was talking about John Myungs writing and
they said it "is flaky, inconsistent, and completly without any
    coherence and structure".

Have you ever heard that album... hmmm... uhhh... what is it called,
I think its Images and Words. There is this cool little tune on
there.... uhhhh... something about learning or living or something like
that. You might want to give that one a listen.

    Sheesh...

Time has come to add my own opinion. (Wait a minute - this is fact!!??!!) First, Iron Maiden: "Flight of Icarus" appeared first on the studio lp Piece of Mind. VERY strong album, second in a string of five incredible releases by Maiden. Shame on you Jason for not knowing Maiden. "Those who forget the past...." Second, Gamma Ray: In the US, GR has officially released three records. 1. Heading for Tommorow 2. Sigh No More 3. Insanity and Genius Of the above, to the best of my knowledge only I&G is still available. I know for a fact that it is available. If they don't have it at your local

record store, telnet to cdnow! They have it relatively cheap. (12 bucks?) Maybe you could find the first two in a used-cd store... The new one is not yet available domestically. Import, yes, domestic, no. -- Kevin Madden (kwmadden@usa.pipeline.com) Go Wings in 95!! Oh well, time for a new .sig How about GO WINGS IN 96?? Nah, I'll wait.

Hey again! I just wanted to say that this List is absolutely great in getting poeple together, from all around the world. To me, it's beautiful that I, being a high school student from Israel, have somthing in common with, say, a married guy from Germany, or New-Zeland! With tears in my eyes, I conclude: I love all you beautiful boyz and girlz. Party on. Maybe I should catch some ZZZZZZs now. Aviad.

Hey people! OK, this is about the drums debate. Let's not make this a thread - just my comment on the good article posted in the last 'Jam by a someone I forgot his name (sorry! But it was fun reading your thing, though). I deeply agree with what you said about Portnoy and Peart. Let the kid practice before he can challange his master. OK, this is just me blowing my load: Good, all-around drummers I like include (the first one is my favourite, the rest in no particular order:)

Will Calhoun - Living Colour - simply an amazing player. This guy has a technic from hell, but he still manages to compliment the music every time he's playing. If you want an example to his amazing feel and chops, check out Jack DeJohnette's latest CD (imagine Jack and Will playing together...) and Living Colour's Stain.

Marc Zonder - Fates Warning - A great rock player, but originaly a Jazz player, I believe. This guy can pull off the most tasteful chops and grooves, and still sometimes stick to the basics. A good healthy jewish drummer...

Omar Hakim and Dennis Chambers - I mention these two together, because I regard them both to be amazing young players, who can play basicaly anything. Check out Hakim on the compliation CD "Burnin' for Buddy", and Chambers and the last Tom Coster CD.

Sean Kinney - Alice in Chains - A great Rock drummer. Kinda apart from the rest, I you know what I mean. BTW, is anyone on this list into AIC? What the hell IS the matter with them anyway?

Greg Bissonette - One of my Favourites. This guy can play Rock, Fusion and Funk with the same Conviction. Check out Satch's "The Extremist".

OK, done. Drummer and other good people, don't hasitate to E-mail yours truly.

In referecne to the note about drummers, the list of good drummers you presented is quite impressive, seeing as how you didn't just stick to the rock category. But I have to disagree with the Neil Peart is the greatest drummer ever, I certainly hope you were kidding. Peart is amazing. No question about that, but he is far from the greatest. Buddy Rich is most undoubtedly the greayesy drumming genius ever. There is not a drummer in the world who will dispute this. But even without Buddy, there are many other drummers that are considered better than Peart. And I don't think Mike Portnoy is that far from Peart. I would hazard a guess and say Mike could play just about any Rush song. However, I would also hazard a guess and say Mike doesn't want to do those destroying the drumset while playing well, or whatever you said, stuff because that would be playing like Peart and not playing the Portnoy. As a drummer, and a very mediocre one at that, I do strive to be able to do what Peart and Portnoy and the other fabulous drummers of the world can do. But I prefer to assimilate, not emulate. A musician needs to develop their own sound which should be different from the sounds of their inspirations, while at the same time similar and certain ways. I agree 100% with whoever it was that said you can't call someone 'the best'. For every person who say JP is the greatest you could probably find someone who says, JP, he's just another mediocre shredder. That's how it goes.

In reference to the note that mentioned the clips from Awake and a secret message here is my interpretation. If you take each movie clip on the album and find out what movies they come from, maybe the titles of the movies together will present a message. Or there might be some correlation between the clips other than that. This could be something that we could try and figure out(there is something other than analyzing the actual music itself). To contriubte my little part the line in 6:00 'I know all about the honor of god Mary Jane' comes from the movie 'The Dead'. This is the movie version of James Joyces short story in his book 'Dubliners'. The other line in that song 'six o'colck on a chrsitman morning' might also be from that movie but I can;t remember.

    Anyone know any other clips?

Well - keep the high profile for NEWS and INFORMATION guys.

BTW: John Myung (The Bassist of DREAM THEATER [the band we are discussing about]) had transfered from 4 string bass to a 6 string bass! - a TOBIAS Basic 6! - another fun detail! yes! yes!

Tonight I introduced a friend of mine to Dream Theater. He had been stationed in Kt. with the army for the past 2 years so he really hadn't ever heard me preach about DT. But tonight we got in my car and a tape I made of Live in Tokyo was playing Ytsejam. He loved it, drum solo and all (even though he thought it was a little long). Then, I don't remember what, but, a song came on which had vocals...his opinion of the band quickly changed. He didn't even want to listen to them anymore. I then persuaded him to watch the video, which he did, but felt the same. He hated James' singing. "It sounds like a cheese rock, Skid Row, Scorpion, Warrent ("his teeth are whiter than white...huh huh"; Beavis and Butt Head) thing. I tried to explain to him that his vocals on the video are a bit rougher than usual, but still he couldn't stand it. I then told my friend that my girlfreind also doesn't care all that much for James' voice. I said I have disscussed this before with many people but couldn't really find another singer who we thought would fit them. He suggested someone with a low and deep voice. Not a Type 0 Negitive or Pantera thing, but I feel this combo could be something which might sound okay.

Don't feel I hate Labrie, personally I love him, but I have had probaly 10-15 people turned off to DT because of his soprano stlye.

If this has been covered before I apologize, but I really would like to know your opinion on this and how to get around this advertising dellima.

P.S. FAVE MOMENTS: All of WDADU, I&W, Awake, Live@Marque, LiveinTokyo, and soon Subconcious!

    Another great drummer overlooked.

Jonathan Mover- the drummer for Alice Cooper, who used to play on the live Satriani gig, but got replaced by Greg Bissonette for some reason.

Kenny G???????????????????????????????????????? What a fuckin' waste of time and money. Buy some real jazz. Branford Marsalis. John Coletrane. NOT Kenny G.

Another guitar great that seems to have been overlooked is Kevin Eubanks. Check out some jazz shit that he has recorded and it will fuckin' BLOW YOU AWAY!!! Not necesasarly(or what ever) better that JP, just different.

Also about EVH vs. JP, EVH WAS good at one time, but you will notice that they started to suck once David Lee Roth left. You know I'm right.

For all you out there that are into classical music, recordings you should hear. Gustav Mahler- All Symphonies, but espically the "Titan", and the 6th. Peter Tschaikowsky- Symphonies 4, 5, and 6. Just some of my favorites. For a good laugh, get the soundtrack to "Saturday Night Fever" and check out "Night on Disco Mountain" based on "Night on the Bare(Bald) Mountain"

    Peace out homeys
