>but Myung's writing is flaky, inconsistent, and completely without any
coherence or structure!<
Keith has taken to reading over my shoulder when I'm checking out my
Ytsejams...although he is asleep at the moment, so I'll comment for him.
Keith has often told me that one of his *favorite* Dream Theater songs is
something that John has written! In fact, he was really hoping that LtL was
on the "Awake" tour set-list. When we met the guys, Keith felt it was very
important to tell John this very thing. This comment made the shy John seem
even more shy, but I think he was extremely flattered...

John I also purchased WDaDU when it first came out. And I remember when I & W came out hearing "hey have you heard that Pull Me Over song by Dreaming something or other those guys are cool they sound like Metallica, Dude" Those days were Hell for me because I am a dj and for months I had to try to explain to people that there is so much MORE to DT than that "Pull me Over" song. The fun thing about it was that I was able to say "NO IT IS NOT A SONG ABOUT SOME DUDE GETTING A SPEEDING TICKET IT IS CALLED PULL ME UNDER" (he he he he he)

In response to the question in Digest 871 about how you became a fan:
I did it all by myself. I heard 'Pull Me Under' on MTV and thought it kicked ass. My band member friends said, those guys suck. Anyway I never pursued buying the album because I didn't have the money. Then last fall I heard 'Lie' on the radio and it blew me away so I went out and bought Awake and loved it. It wasn't until 2 weeks ago that I finally was free to buy IAW(i was very busy from the fall till the spring) and that just was it. I was now dedicated. Within 2 days I searched 6 different stores till I found WDADU and then I purchased InstruMental II 2 days after that. Just today I bought Live at the Marquee which is awesome and saw about 20 different bootlegs that I could have bought but decided against because I hate Bootlegs. I am kinda pissed that I missed Subconcious but that's life.
Hop that answers that.

me too, in a way... i first heard DT's Pull Me Under on our local rock station (the station that plays alternative way too much :) ) it was part of their 'New Stuff' show...i loved the song right from the beginning then, i was watching Much Music (actually i taped it since i was at school at the time), and Take The Time came on. I was blown away once more! i rewinded, and watched the video about 15 times straight...no kidding! the next day, i went and bought the CD. since then, i've played DT for everyone i know...including a friend back in Poland (who is now a fan)...another friend, went with me to their show in Seattle. He appreciates them, but won't buy their albums...he did say that he'd go see them live again. all others don't like DT. some don't like it because of James' voice, others because the music (on I&W) sounds like a video game :)

Wow...there may be hope yet. I wasn't looking forward to a Dream Theater song with fuck in it (I, by the way, do not curse) however I feel the fuck in Operation: mindcrime is very effect for what it's meant to do. However given in this context I think the line I don't need your sympathy is better.
> Some of the best material around is also stuff that DID SELL WELL to the > masses. The aforementioned "The Wall" album is a good example.
Agreed.... Close to the Edge by Yes (voted the best Progressive album of all time by alt.music.progressive and the Progressive Fidonet echo) reached #1 in England and was in the top 10 in the US.
> I'm afraid Mindcrime isn't the best conceptual album of all time, not by > a long shot. Pink Floyd beats it twice with The Wall (the overall best) > and Dark Side of the Moon, and who can forget Rush's 2112 and Hemispheres. > But yes, Mindcrime was awesome, and yes, Awake was a good attempt. AMBI > is great, it's just not as tight an album overall.
I can't believe no one here has thrown out "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" as the best concept album. Sure, it's not as accessable or popluar as the Wall, but the 'concept' or story in its case was much stronger than any of the aforementioned albums.
For those who don't know the story, Peter Gabriel first wrote a short story. It started out as ramblings and then started to take form and add characters. Then Peter took his story and converted it to poem form and then made them the lyrics for their double album. All songs on the ablum are basically a story, some even with dialog and the thing is, that that the songs were centered on the story rather just as the lyrics were.
It also has one of the most suprising and shocking endings of any concept album I've seen. Also, a lot of the "scenes" the main character travels to are take from Peter's dreams, so you can guess some pschadelic qualities appeared in the lyrics.
Instead of making a movie about the album (like the Wall) Genesis made one of the first "multimedia" concerts (this was 1974) which has been used subsequently by Queesryche themselves. They displayed pictures during the songs that were connected with the images produced by the songs while Peter Gabriel had a costume for every character in the album. He changed costumes quite a bit during the concert. In fact, there is one bootleg of the tour that has a famous Genesis by a person in the audience. When Peter came out in his "Lamia" costume (mythical sex goddess which tempts the main character) a person in the audience shouts, "What the FUCK is that?"
oh also reguarding cursing in Prog, now that I think about it, on this very album we get to hear Peter sing the lines:
"You say I must be crazy, 'cos I don't care who I hit, who I hit. But you it's me that hittin' out, and I'm, I'm not full of shit."
Later in the album, he sings,
"'Understand Rael, that's the end of your tail.' 'Don't delay, dock the dick!' I watch his countdown timer tick."
Marillion too has a few fucks in a couple of their songs.
Of course, I'm not advocating cursing in song, but I'm just pointing out it HAS been done before.
Comments?
Oh...one more thing. Hairball said that he liked Awake more than Images and Words because they got away from the "Pull Me Under" style...
Pull Me Under is just one song on IAW, and with the possible exception of UaGM, it is the only song on the album with that certain style. It seems to me Awake moved more in that direction, more of a metal edge, rather than the keys/guitar balance. It also seems to me that you're saying Images and Words was more of a commertial venture than Awake, in which I would have to say I disagree. Images and Words has sold more, yes, but it's been out 2 years longer than Awake.

I just had to say: This is such a true statement. :)
Oh yes, one last thing:
To all those who encouraged me to buy Tori Amos's two albums, THANK YOU.
I am in love. I love Little Earthquakes and I love Under the Pink more. My favorite song of hers? Yes, Anastasia. This is the ultimate piano song, ever. She displays such powerful passionate emotions in her singing, and her piano playing is hauntingfully beautiful. I urge everyone on this list to go out and buy Under the Pink. It will BLOW you away. It proves that music does not have to be heavy to be powerful.
P.S. The piano intro on Icicle is now offically my favorite piano solo ever.

Yes!!!! I do know that they played at the Boardwalk eons ago, but the Crest cancellation a couple years ago was a bummer. Honestly, I think they're shooting themselves in the foot. Why? Well, how much promotion have they even *tried* to do here? They'll probably try to claim that there's no audience, but how do they know if they even have an audience when they haven't exhibited an interest in this locale? For example, the only reason I knew about the SF show in December was due to the 'Jam. I've personally run into enough fans, local 'Jammers, and Bay Area 'Jammers to show that there's a market for a Sacto. show - I'm not talking about Cal Expo as a venue, but at least a try for the Crest again...

hi all!
this is about the John Myung inconsistency thread.
the person who made the original statement has had a chance to defend his assertion that myung's writing is flaky and inconsistent, so now id like to assert otherwise....
to get a few things out of the way first, id like to disagree on a point he made... it was said that LSOAD is the only song on Awake that the lyrics are unclear and ambiguous... it was said that even SDV "with all of its idio- syncrasies" is clearer... well, i have to disagree... anyone who has read the FAQ explanation of SDV, how in the world are all those references to the clothing ad that he makes supposed to make sense at all unless you know the story behind it... read the explanation and you get this huge "AH-HA" sensation, sort of like enlightenment or something... example: "Falling thru pages of martins on angels/feeling my heart pull west/i saw the future dressed as a stranger/love in a Space-Dye Vest" ... ???? .... you know, what does this refer to; what does it mean?? the biggest mystery i found on Awake when i bought it was "what is a space-dye vest??" ....
anyways...LSOAD ... from what i can remember, the lyrics are perhaps the most straight forward you could expect ... "he seems alone and silent" hmmm ... what does that mean??? ( :) ) "thoughts remain without an answer" ... the guy is really troubled by something in his mind and there is no answer that he can see... "moved by desire and fear" ... question: have you ever been in love or infatuated with someone but often too afraid to say anything?? your actions are both moved by your desire and your fear... get it?? the rest of the lyrics i think are just as plain, revealing that the guy is lonely and he shys away from contact with others because he feels alienated or doesnt feel welcome ( prehaps particularly by Her) ... if myung is a little poetic in the way he says something though, we can forgive that cant we?? .... the chorus: "Lifting shadows off a dream, once broken / she can turn a drop of water into an ocean" .. well, we've got some multi level imagery here with the basic lowdown being that this woman has the ability to make him feel better... she can realize his dreams, comfort him, and make things right... is the water/ocean thing ambiguous?? well, i see many interpretations all being important and valid... turning a drop of water into an ocean, magnifying something enormously, whether that is hope or love or that little seed of a dream inside of one that would become so much bigger and real when realized... also, with the level of sadness this guy experiences, remember the line "and she listens, openly," her act of listening and comforting would likely be an emotional release perhaps turning his sadness into an "ocean" of tears or an emotional ocean that once let out would heal him .. such kinds of large outpurings i think we all know can be very healing and positive... etc
well.... thanks for listening...that's all for today.... tune in next time when you will here Dr Bob say....

So what's with everyone killing Caught in a Web? I think the chorus is fine. It's a nice change to a lighter open section. It's different! It stands out as the chorus. FWIW, it doesn't change tempo or meter there. It has a different feel but they get in and out of it the way DT always does - perfectly. You guys don't have to like CiaW, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. The chorus is a very cool new section.

Concerning the interesting comment by Charles Hanley that "Nigel Tuffnel" (whom I quoted as a critic giving a very positive review of the band Course of Empire) shares a name with a Spinal Tap member, great observation! It's been a few years since I've seen the movie, so I don't recall that name, but I'll take your word for it. As I said, I took this quote from Course of Empire's web page. It could be somebody's joke for all I know, or just an (un)lucky coincidence. In any case, I agree with the (possibly fictional) critic, that COE are an "alternative to alternative" and an excellent band.
For those of you who want to know where to buy Course of Empire albums, I have seen them at the following chain stores: Wax Trax, Replays, and Sound Warehouse (before they became Blockbuster Music). I am situated in Boulder, Colorado and I can only tell you that I have seen copies of their albums in the Boulder branches of these chains. The band is from Texas, so they shouldn't be too hard to find in the US. I bought both CoE albums about a year ago, so I haven't been looking in the 'C' section of any record stores lately. I ought to mention that I first discovered Course of Empire on the listening rack at Sound Warehouse. That chain must have been involved in actively promoting them. Their new incarnation may well carry on this tradition, but I haven't checked them out recently.
Thanks for (potentially) listening!

Re: I&W vs. Awake...Hmm...I'll have to ponder that one.
Re: Favorite DT moment: Well, this is a biggie. In a nutshell, it was the Awake show in Chicago. Despite standing in cold rain in the beginning of November for 4 hours, I still had the greatest time. Because we were there so early, we got to meet Mike and Derek before the show for a few minutes. I was almost in front of the stage through the concert (there was one person in front of me, and then the stage. Unfortunately, being only 5' tall does make this a problem) I Mother Earth was a good opening band, and this was another of the shows where Mike came out and did a little drum jam with the other percussionist, who was amazing in his own right. When DT came on stage, it was incredible. The lights, the music...everything was GREAT! The only slight mess up was during "Another Day", where James started singing a beat too soon, got thrown off a bit, and stopped the song, saying,"It's not like we've done this song a million times already!" and then they started again. After the show, I got to go to an after show meet & greet and talk to the guys. They're really cool people. Unfortunately ,I was too awestruck to go up and talk to them...I just stood and stared...*8)
Re: DT and a major band...I asked James (the one intelligent thing I was able to spit out) if they had thought about doing a show with Queensryche. He said that nothing was in progress, but it would be a cool idea. My question is: Who would open for whom? :)
Well, I've said plenty for my first post...

Mats Rydstrom quotes the following as examples of "pretentious overblown big words that don't mean much"
"Mountains come out of the sky and they stand there"
"It's just the age, it's just a stage, we disengage, we turn the page"
How dare anyone imply similaritiy between inherently meaningless Yes lyrics and inherently profound Rush lyrics! These two quotes are perfect examples of the contrast between 'image-invoking', yet pointless, lyrics and lyrics that make a philosophic/political point. I have to wonder whether Mats actually understands what Neil Peart is saying.

I remember about 5 years ago listening to Metropolis in my car. My drummer at the time had the tape and I thought it was pretty cool, but I soon lostinterest cause he took the tape back. Several months later I saw the video for PMU on HeadBangers Ball (sucks that it was cancelled aye?) and I was totally blown away...I immediatly bought I&W and have been a devoted fan ever since.

Hello, it's me, Hairball...for those of you who remember me. Like the screen name? =)
I've got about 5 'Jams backlogged in my box, but, I just don't have the time right now - I'm like 2 days away from finishing up my second to last college semester, and busting my ass, taking 3 classes in 6 weeks. Unreal. I have a 5-10 page paper due TOMORROW, so...
I just wanted to comment on this:
>Do you mean Berklee (College of Music)? I don't wanna sound >like another Berklee drop-out putting down the school but >Berklee does not have an entrance audition. >Decent grades/SAT scores and check that clears will do it for >ya'.
I'd like to add my two cents to this. I applied to Berklee. I was turned down, primarilly because I lack "formal training." Yeah, I've taught myself how to play guitar, bass & keyboards, with a few lessons (only on guitar and piano), but, I lack talent. Ask Dave Neff how untalented I am. =)
Anyway, they said, essentially, "If you pay $2500, take our summer music seminar, we'll re-evaluate your application, provided you pass." Well, since I really wanted to go for their Music Production & Engineering program, I called & said yes. This was during my senior year of high school, so, I still had some time. I got into Drexel University, for their Production program (And, believe it or not, I actually had to audition for their music department...yes, they DO have one there!). I called the director of the program and told him to forget it.
Well, a few months later (near the end of the summer), I get a letter from BCoM congratulating me on my acceptance. Uh...
Needless to say, I called and told them I would never attend a school who couldn't keep something like THAT straight.
So, if you're applying to BCoM, and they send you something like that, do what I did - say you're coming, don't send them any money, and then call and cancel. You might get in! =)
-Hairball, that engineering type, who's about to graduate from Temple in about a month!!!!!! (I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!!)

I haven't written to the Ytsejam ina ges and I haven't read it for while either. Just before the Easter vacation, I was reading the ytsejam and getting severely bored of reading nothing interesting and so I stopped. When I came back and found my mail box full of about a million ytsejams, I really couldn't be arsed to read them. I finally decided to read one today and it's full of cool and interesting stuff.
For example, when is ACOS coming out in the UK? And what's this about DT covering a Maiden song? It should be Back in the Village from the Powerslacve album. Absolutely immense with a killer opening riff that kicks ass. Or it should be Wasted Years with another killer riff or Can I Play with Madness? Another im,mense track or we could go for the DT-typically-long-song and go for Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner. Basically, there are about a billion Killer Maiden songs that DT could cover and any one of them would be amazing. The best though for keyboards would be something of Somewhere in Time or Seventh Son. Anyhow, what's this got to do with DT? Are they going to cover a Maiden track at a gig or something? I thought ACOS was just going to be released as a one track EP since it is so long anyway!
Does anybod know what Maiden's mascott's full name is and where it comes from?
Bye bye.

First of all: Would someone please send me the Dream Theater track list for the Ronnie Scott's cover gig? I got a copy and whoever sent it forgot to include one. And no, I can't identify it all myself. <G>
Secondly: I know some of you are subscribers to the official fanzine in England, Images & Words. I know one of the international distributors in Canada, and she asked me to post here in case some of you want to continue a subscription or obtain one at least on this continent. Write to:
Karin Begai 699 Coxwell Ave. #1 Toronto, ONT M4C 3C1 Canada
and let her know that you heard about her from me. Thanks!
