Hello everyone, it's BABS. Since the recent thread of Gamma and Jeff Beck
trivia from the last digest I am suffering from another flashback.
Does anyone remember a band w/ Jeff Beck and I think possibly Jimmy Page
called Box of Frogs? It must have been early to mid-eighties and it was
kind of bluesy sounding. It's not the Jeff Beck/Rod Stewart one (People
Get Ready), but it was something a little bit before that. I think that
there may have been a video to it as well where they pull a guitar out of
a swamp or something. Can somebody help me on this one?

Hello everyone, it's Babs. I got a cute story to tell you all, here goes:
I have been redecorating my place and I have had furniture delivered. On
the day that I was having my couch delivered (three days after the YTSE
convention) the two movers came in and put the couch down and they happened
to see the poster I won at the convention (it was the Images & Words one).
One of the movers said to me "hey, do you know that they have another one
out called AWAKE - I just bought it". I'm looking at the poor guy like
he's from Mars, but he honestly did not know that it had been out since
August of last year. It only goes to show the poor radio stations we have
here. He got a kick out of looking at my pictures from the convention.
He doesn't know anything about computers and it was fun trying to explain
what the Ytsejam is.
Isn't that a cute story everyone?

Hello fellow Jammers,
I've been lurking since about the convention time frame and I
think now is a good time to post. I going back a ways but I'm
going to answer some old stuff and put some thoughts out for
the debating, etc.....
1. A while ago someone wanted to know what Jammers do for
a living. Well, I'm a designer for an engineering firm in New
London, CT (that is how I have access to all the cool toys to print
things, i.e. remember the convention??). I'm 25 years old and
I'm still taking night classes at a local college.
2. How did I get introduced to DT?? Well, I was traveling up to
Boston about twice a week for a few months and believe it or
not, a radio station from Providence was playing this really cool
song one day. I had to catch the song twice more before I found
out it was PMU. I bought the CD the next day and thats
that....hooked!!!! I introduced a few friends/co-workers to DT and
they were hooked quickly. Good Music Travels Fast!!!
3. Greatest DT moment: YTSECON!!!!!!!! Definitely!!!!!
4. Drummers take notice here: I was talking to Mike at the con
and he said he is going to be doing drum clinics for Sabian. I
went to my regular music store and asked them to book Mike
(they carry Sabian) and they said they would consider it. Well
time is ticking and they told me the other day that they were
leaning towards Rod M (Mr. Winger)........assholes!!! I guess
now I'll have to start persuading them.........I'm calling them today
to offer to do all their mailings for the clinic for free if they bring in
Mike. Hopefully it works. You guys should talk to your local
music stores because if they carry Sabians they are earning
points towards a free clinic. Check it out!!
5. I&W vs Awake: Both kick ass albums but I'm now leaning
towards Awake. I absolutely Love I&W but for some reason
recently I started to listen to Awake more.
Well, sorry for the length but I needed to get it all out. I'll be
talking at ya..........

Yeah, what the hell?!! They play some *dive* in Reno the night

That's true. I don't think that PMU deserves to go into the
same category as Rush's "Tom Sawyer" (overrated, that is,
although I don't agree with most Rush fans that TS is over-
rated). I still have to crank the stereo when PMU comes over
the airwaves.

hello, all,
It has been a while since I posted. I am now in michigan (another
midwester - about two hours from chicago). As for what I do: I am a
medical student at the University of Alberta, but I am working in MI for
the summer (yes, med students do get summers off! - from school that is)
I have a really neat/strange/weird story to tell. This last Christmas
when I was down here visiting my parents, I went to a record store in
Mishawaka IN, and saw a DT album that I had never seen before. I had
just finished picking up LatM and I saw that this other album had some of
the same songs on it, but I had run out of money (again) and so I was not
able to buy it. I went back to Edmonton kicking myself that I wasn't
able to buy it. So, when I got back here this summer, I went there
again, and would you believe it: it was still there!! It was WDADU on
disc, and after receiving a copy on a trade (thanks Marc) I decided that
I needed to have it on disc. I guess there are not many DT fans in the
South Bend/Mishawaka area if an album that is no longer in print can sit
on the shelf for 6 months!!!
I have an observation about the list: It seems that people are getting
rather cynical over the whole DS/KM thing. I think that we need to just
sit back and wait. Give that lad a chance. Sure he's got some big shoes
to fill, but those are our expectations. Who knows? Maybe he will be
able to lift DT to new heights! Maybe I am naive, indeed I don't know
very much about this guy, but c'mon! Let's just sit back and enjoy what
we have and wait patiently to see what new direction they go.

Both! Back in late '92, my friend Ron gave me a call one day and said
"Dave! Dream Theater is playing in town tonight - you MUST see them!"
I said "Who? Never heard of 'em. No thanks." After much arm-twisting, he
finally talked me into going ("It's only $8! You'll like them, trust me!").
The first DT song I ever heard was Metropolis, live and in person, right
smack in front of me, right in my face, at full concert volume.
Needless to say, I was somewhat impressed.

This is regarding John's post about how many of us became DT fans on our
own, or forced by another DT fan... :)
Well, I first heard Pull Me Under on the radio and started to like them
(93 ROCK played it often enough :), so I had to go and buy it. Needless
to say, it was a great CD. I'm not sure who they sound like, but I put
them right up there with older Fates Warning, Queensrych, and Diamond Head.
Since then, I have picked up AWAKE, and Subconscious. All very good CD's.
DT is one of my top 5 favorite bands, right along with:
1. Queensrych
2. Dream Theater
3. Fates Warning
4. Manowar
5. Diamond Head / Saxon (tie :)

Hey all,
Someone asked whether or not people on the list discovered DT on
their own, or were introduced by another DT fan. Well, I'm a DT fan by
chance. I was working for Musicland (If you pay ML full price for a disk
be sure you kiss the sales rep because you're getting screwed) and I just
happened to like the cover of I&W (at that point in my life WD&DU did not
exist because I existed in Idaho ('nuff said?). Well I was hooked from
the first listen. As a matter of fact, I hooked about a half dozen
people in Pocatello by playing the album in store everyday for a month
(my co-workers, George Strait fans all, were ready to kill me).
I figured that DT was a dream too good to be true since I had
already been a Fates Warning fan since No Exit and a Queensryche fan
since '84 (I was in Seattle then). DT just rounded out the Holy Trinity
of music for me. I was simply drawn by an inexorable pull toward the
grace that is DT. Amen!

People have been asking if DT can fit this whole show on to one CD. The
answer is no, it is almost 90 minutes long so they will probably only
including choice songs on the ACOS disk. I'm hoping for the Yes Medley,
Zeppelin Medley, and the encore medley. These would round out the disk
nicely. I still think they will release the whole show on video in time
for the Christmas rush, that is if East West has a bit of marketing
intelligence.

Hi 'jammers!
I don't know if one of the others already posted a review, but here's mine:
My trip to Saarbruecken was really great !!! :) :) :)
My brother and me came from Berlin by train (9 hours...). At least six
German 'jammers were at the show: Bernd, Steffen, Till, Tilman, Tim and me.
And, of course, Patricia. But I think Tilman should tell you this story!
It was so cool to meet people I only got to know via electronic mail !
It seemed that most of the people at the show didn't know Threshold, but they
are a great band, check them out! And what can I say about the DT show?
Fantastic, as usual. :)
The setlist was the same as before on this tour. At the beginning the sound
wasn't very good, you could hardly hear the keyboards. But later it became
much better, although the drums were too loud throughout the entire show...
Although I have just heard it one time, I think I like the new ACOS more than
the old version: They added completely new parts that have all the elements
of DT music that I like so much. In "The Silent Man" the guitar solo part
was extended, and Mike sang the line "If there is balance" ! :)
I have to say THANKS again to Till who made possible that we could enter
the backstage area after the show and talk to James, Mike and Derek !!!
Mike was very interested in the tapes I was carrying around with me (Till
just gave me them), especially Majesty live... I don't know what James
would have said if he saw the Winter Rose tape... Mike said that there will
be bonus track(s) (from Ronnie Scott's) on the Japanese edition of the ACOS
EP. He also told us the length of the Ronnie Scotts stuff that will be on
the EP, but I don't remember it right now (Tilman?!?). I asked James about
"fuck" in ACOS and he said that they discussed it and that the whole band
made the decision to put it in there (although I didn't hear it in the show).
With Tim's (and his car's) help we solved our little problem later (the guy
that had Tilman's and my backpacks (with train tickets and all) in his car
drove away after the show...).
I really enjoyed the trip and would like to see you all again!
Maybe at the next tour you can come to Berlin... :)

Recommendation: try the 'Trilogy' CD next or perhaps the more recent
'Black Moon' CD. The first, self-titled ELP album is pretty good; features
alot of excellent piano and Hammond organ (since it dates from the early
days of synth's there is not a lot of synth stuff). The 'Tarkus' concept
piece on 'Tarkus' is excellent, although the rest of the CD is IMHO
mediocre. If you like what you hear, then try the rest. The Emerson, Lake
& Powell (Cozy Powell, more noted metal drummer; I think Carl was still
with Asia at the time)) CD is also good. Alot of ELP's pieces are based on
arrangements of classical music, although this is not always noted on the
CD info.

many kudos as Ozzy's axemen. How about the original, Tony Iommi, from his
BS days?

Okay, I know it has been totally thrashed out here but can someone please

with people at the station, and they use one of two excuses 1) songs are too
darn long to air, or 2) "Oh, we did play some stuff, but the listeners didn't
respond to it." This is despite suggestions of not-so-long, "catchy" tunes.

1) A while back a guy mentioned something about starting a petition or something to leagalize DT shows being recorded. His resons were, I am sure partly self gratifying but also for the benifit of DT. He said that out of all the bootlegs that are made and all of the money made, none of it goes to the bands(DT). Bootlegs don't hinder the progress of a bands impression on people, they stimulate interest. So if bands (DT) would sell tickets at a marked up price specifically for the purpose of recording a show (video, audio, ect), then the fans would be happy, the bands would make more money, and the interst of the fans would be greatly increased (also leading to more subscriptions to ytsejam and more posts).
2) For that guy who keeps asking how people can read and reply to a message at the same time, you can have your jams mailed individually as they are sent to ytsejam@arastar.com.
Anyone know how to do this?
Also, anyone know roughly what time the digest form of this is sent?

I read the faq at the DT webpage (I can't remember the address, but I would think most of you would have read it by now). Some questions have arisen:
2.2 Can someone be a bit more specific about the supposed personality conflicts.
2.4 Why was the sentence censored?
4.17 Why did James leave the stage (and leave Mike to finish singing)?
Some other questions. In something I read where MP was saying how they got JL into the band, he was quoted as saying they had decided on a singer before they heard his tape. Who was the unfortunate man?
Just reply to the jam so everyone can read the answers.

First of all, you're a Brit and don't know Maiden's history?! Shame on you! (Just kidding!) Maiden's mascot's name is Ed. Just that. No last name. When they were first starting out, Ed was just a head that was their backdrop. At the finale of the show the head would light up and smoke would pour out. Back then, they just referred it to as *Head*. I guess someone quoted it in cockney and 'Ed was born. Since then, ol Ed has gotten a body and had himself go through some changes.
I think Ed looks a lot like *The Gods of Lankmahr* from Dungeon and Dragons, but that is just my opinion. Also too, IMHO, *Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son* was their last good album.

Yep, Alice in Chains rock! No doubt. I've been in the dephts of despair - I thought they had ceased to exist. But I don't think they are the only good "alternative" band. What about Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins and - dare I say it - Nirvana? It seems to me most Ytsejammers only listen to prog/metal, and don't want to be caught dead with a copy of Nevermind. Please tell me I'm wrong.

Hello,
I am new to the group and after reading todays issue had a couple things on my mind.....
First, regarding concept albums- Rush 2112 and Hemispheres are NOT true concept albums, although both albums do have one side devoted to a single piece. Both albums have several songs on the other side of the album not related to the concept side....BTW they happen to be two of the best albums of all time in my opinion
Second, I totally agree with JennieBear about the Sacto Dream Theater show, I was really bummed when that was cancelled, and they haven't come back yet....We're dying out here guys...where are you?? I'm sure they would have no problem filling the Crest theater.

Hi everyone!
This morning when I woke up, I played "Carry That Weight/Golden Slumbers" for my roommate while we were getting ready. I also made some sort of derogatory Beatles comment. To get back at me, he snuck a Beatles cassette with him on the way to work (he drove) and put me through Beatles Hell for half an hour! We finally finished with "Carry That Weight." I kept telling him "They're not doing it right!" and air-drummed and guitared at the appropriate moments. He accused me of sacrilege.
Anyway, after listening to that stuff all morning, I can still say that DT's "Slumbers" is the only Beatles song that I have ever liked. Then again, it's kind of hard to listen to a band that was as big as the Beatles phenomenon objectively. I just don't see how they ever got popular. I mean, how could so many people devote themselves to one band in such an intense manner? Doesn't it seem a bit weak, intellectually? I would never follow one band with so much intensity. <sarcasm> I just don't like any one type of music enough to exclusively listen to one group. <sarcasm> Geez, I'll bet they even joined fan clubs and newsletters. <sarcasm> :)
