    Hello YtseJammers,

I recently came across a site on the web that most of you will find
interesting. It's called the Similarities Engine. You enter 5 of your
favorite albums into their system and within hours you receive via e-mail
a list of bands/albums that there is a high probability of you liking.
    It's pretty cool.
    The URL is : http://www.webcom.com/~se

If this has been posted before, I'm sorry for the redundancy.

Anyways, I got a list from the engine not too long ago, and one of the
high-weight bands on there to try was Gamma Ray. Someone just posted
that these guys have a new album out, but it seems that here in Florida
these guys are just unknown. I can't find any of their albums!

Are they a relatively new group? How many albums do they have out? Any
info would be appreciated. I'm always trying to find new music to get into.

BTW, the Awake-I&W discussions on here recently have been great! It's
very tough for me to call, but I have to say that I enjoy Awake more by
the narrowest of margins. To me it is such a deep album with some of the
    finest melodies I've ever heard!

    Until later all!

That would be a good title.

I noticed at the YtseCon that Mike has CARPE DIEM tattooed across hos
left inner arm. The letters are really big and it extends across most of
his arm in black letters. Is this new?

No. I am raggin' on Yanni! Yeah, the bass solo was great. Kenny G has a
great bass player too. Am I running out the buy a Kenny g album. No. Jeez.
I don't think ol' Yanni is similar to DT at all. Yanni's New Age. DT is
prog-metal. I think the Kenny G comparison is much better. Both have a
great lite show. Goodness. Yanni similar to DT. right.

WRT the Dream Theater Fan Club:

It has now been almost 24 months since I sent in my first (he-he-he) set of
dues. I did receive the introductory offering from the club in the January 95
timeframe, I believe. However, that is all that I have received to date.
What gives ?? If anyone has received other material, please let me know.
Maybe my address got lost. Also, if anyone on the YTSEJAM is connected to the
band, what is their take on this ??

Back where I grew up, this is called "getting snookered". Where I live now,
it is called "getting fucked". (Note how the selective use of the word

    Hey all,
I know I promised that this post would be all about DT, but since
the Yanni thread has begun, I can't resist.
If you like Live At the Acropolis because of the "bigger" sound
(as opposed to In My Time) you'll love Kitaro's albums. He's great.
Kitaro's music is almost all like the stuff Yanni is doing on LATA. I
would suggest picking up Kojiki or Dream (Dream has two songs that
feature vocals by Jon Anderson of Yes fame). Those are by far Kitaro's
best two albums (even though he has about fifteen albums or so. If you
want to dive deeply into his music, pick up Ten Years. It's a
retrospective of his (you guessed it) first ten years of recording. I
    love this guy!

    Hi all,
Well, I saw the comparison that Jason Hartman made about JP and Alex Lifeson
and had to reply. Jason, although John plays better in a technical way, Alex
is great as well. I think that it was unfair to compare LTL to Stick It Out -
I mean c'mon, that's like saying that By-Tor is heavier than Wait For Sleep.
This isn't meant to be a flame and I DON'T want to start a JP vs AL thread,
but I needed to say something. You also have to remember that Rush doesn't
worry about the technical aspect as much as the songwriting aspect.

Anyway, on an unrelated note, could someone e-mail me a set-list from a
German gig? I noticed someone said TTT was played and so I'm thinking that
the set-list is at least slightly different. Thanx in advance.

    1) Where can I get an Echolyn CD. Are they out in stores? I haven't
    seen them.

    2) What the heck does IHMO (or IMHO or whatever) stand for?

    3) A guy said that Peart is the best drummer ever. He said that
Portnoy's stuff couldn't even come close to comparing to Neil's. I have
to disagree. Rush has never done anyhting for me. I don't get 1/100
of the thrill and rush (no pun intended) that I get when I listen to DT.
I must admit that I have only heard the CD with YYZ on it and then Presto.
They were just okay as opposed to unbelivable. I feel this about Peart also.
If I am wrong, please let me know what albums are good.

    Wow!

Well, I'm a born again Christian believer to begin with. I don't =
consider myself "religious" in the sense that religion is a =
"institutionalized system of rel. beliefs, attitudes, and practices". I =
am firmly rooted in my beliefs, attitudes, but I don't agree with some =
of what's going on today. I am the chair of my youth group, etc and do =
    things around the church,
    too.

I can relate to what McCullough is going through. My parents think that =
Rock music and most other pop music is evil (you've all heard it... =
DEVIL music!) I disagree. Music is a medium, not the message. They are =
somewhat close minded about it, but in the last little while, they've =
been more open minded. (Thx Billy Graham for Michael W. Smith and DC =
Talk!) Some of my friends, and my youth group counsellors have come to a =
concensus that close minded people (including Christians) make it hard =
for other people to live and enjoy their
    lives.

I believe born again Christians should be open minded, sensitive, and =
    caring to what's around them. Paul in 1 Corinthians 10: 27 says, "... =
eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience." =
He is talking about meat offered to idols. Some people though, "Hey, =
Meat is meat..." while newer Christians thought that it was sinful since =
they were just liberated from idolatry. Whether it be music, or meat... =
the bible doesn't say which side it stands on. There are many "grey" =
areas like these -- because individuals are unique and have different =
tastes and preferences (for example the number of denominations we =
have). In verse 23: "Everything is permissible - but not everything is =
beneficial... [nor] constructive". If I were to play DT in church =
(imagine lots of elderly Chinese and parents... can you say STRICT!!!!) =
there would be a lot of questions about my life and my role in church =
(as a youth group chairperson). I'm causing them to stumble because of =
my disrespect. Same with some Fanatic fundamentalists. They cause non =
believers to stumble because of their lack of acceptance and at the sme =
    time repulse
    them.

I believe born again Christians are here to show kindness, open mindness =
and to guide others to the Saviour. Clearly the impressions the world =
has of Christianity are not so (ie Crusades, Inquisition, Jim Baker...) =
I agree that there is a lot of hypocrisy in the church. Where are the =
    kind acts?
    Etc.
After reading an interview between Doug Pinnick of King's X and someone =
else, I came to question what I believed in, what I stood for and what =
I'm here for. I don't want to be "spiritual" and turn people away from =
God and Jesus. In "Dogman", you may have noticed darker, more =
"depressive" stuff, compare to say, "Faith, Hope, Love". The uplifting =
harmonies are replaced by "grungier" stuff. These guys had to cope with =
the hypocrisy, the anger, and self righteousness around
    them.

I find that DT has challenged me in my Christian walk, as have KX and =
some other bands. They have intrigued me with their intelligent and =
amazing music. I just love the lyrics! Talk about cerebral stimulation!=

I just hope more people don't focus on the negative "publicity" =
Christianity has had. "Where is the love, where is the hope, the peace." =
Not in Christianity, nor people, but in Jesus, himself. See what he did =
to "nobody's", and what he did for us. I just hope more people could be =
    like
    him.

    Dan Tshin.

Yesterday my gilfriend and I were at the Rockfabrik
Ludwigsburg to see DT live on their summertour.
The Rockfabrik is a very small club in Ludwigsburg
    near Stuttgart.
The opener was Threshhold from England. They played
stuff from their two CD's. They did a very good job.
After 45 minutes Threshhold and 20 minutes interruption
DT began their show. They started with "Under a glas moon".
After playing a lot of songs from the Awake-album they
played the 20 minutes song "A change of season" (LaBrie
said the release of the A change of season-EP will be
in september this year). At the end they did a unplugged
version of "Wait for sleep" and the last song was
"Learning 2 live". They didn't play "Metropolis".
The sound was better then at the Ludwigsburg-concert
in february this year but very loud. The DT-concert
    was about two hours.

O.K. guys, have a lot of fun on the DT-summertour!!

    Hello,

the tour isn't cancelled!!!!!! I saw the Dream Team yesterday in Ludwigsburg
(the also played their first gig in Germany in Ludwigsburg, and I was there..).
The Show was amazing, the setlist the same as in Lichtenfels. A few words
about the support-Band Threshold. Check them out, they are really worth it.
The were often compared to D.T., but that doesn't fit at all. They are
straighter than D.T. and they use two guitars. After all: they are a Melodic-
Metal-Band with some progressive moments, and they rock....

Good news for all (some) ytsejammers comming to the show in Saarbruecken.
I had the opportunity to talk to Mike in Ludwigsburg, and we spoke about
the convention in the USA. I told him, that we want to do a meeting in
Saarbruecken, and he wants to meet us too. He told me, that he will give
some After-Show-Passes to me, so that we can meet the band and talk to them
after the show (that's why they are called after-show-passes!!).
I don't know how many passes that will be, but I hope it will happen.
    (Mike, you rule!!!)

So where will be the meeting point for us? Outside the hall, or in the left bar?

Hope to see you all !!!!

Unto Ytsejammers everywhere, greetings! Hail Eris. May I begin by saying that there is far too much discussion going on about a Maiden cover by DT. "Not gonna do it..., NOT gonna do it..., wouldn't be prudent - at this juncture!" It's never, EVER, gonna happen people. I'll be happy if their next album is at least on the par with WDADU. Without Kevin's writing to work with, it just leaves Petrucci to work up the killer songs - the ones that make you hit 'track reverse' and listen to again. And, much though I idolize and canonize Petrucci, he can't support the weight of the band alone. Mike P. shows some promise with 'The Mirror', but Myung's writing is flaky, inconsistent, and completely without any coherence or structure! Sherinian can cover the Moore keys parts, but can he compose similar parts? Can he write a song that - with music taken away - reads like a poem? Moore and Petrucci write all the best, most moving tunes and with Moore gone I fear that DT is facing a molehill turned into a mountain. Is this why they a regurgitating ACoS? Flame me if you will, but remember my words... DT is facing the most difficult trial of their careers. Hypothetical situation: Kevin never joined Dream Theater at all. Let's see... we lose PMU, Surrounded, Wait for Sleep, 6:00, Lie, and SDV - just to name the tunes on the last two albums which he wrote. Okay, okay, LaBrie co-wrote CIaW, but who wants to bet that Petrucci wrote the verses and LaBrie wrote the chorus? Quite frankly, the chorus WIMPS OUT on that song. It rocks! IT JAMS! Until LaBrie cheeses out with "Caught in a web, removed from the world, hanging on by a thread,..." the song turns to SHIT in the chorus. This post may seem overly negative towards the band which I deem "The Greatest Metal Band Ever." I'm a pessimist, granted, and I think the guys are gonna be breaking a sweat when they get in the studio to record DT #4. It ain't gonna happen. Get Kevin back, guys! No joke, man!!! This news is for REAL!!! Amazing as it may seem, they're trashing Charlie and picking up this new guy I guess. I mean, what was wrong with Chuck? When I saw them live, he was fine! Well, except for the part where he tripped on the cord. Twice. And when he left the stage because "nature called". I mean, he SANG fine and all, but are these stage problems enough to dump the guy? Well, I guess DT's wiser than I. We shall see!

Aviad: You mean Dream Theater has a SECOND album out??? And a third one's on the way??? Joy, joy joy!!! My CD player will be jammin'! (Soon as I save up and get that $5 bill I've been hoping for...)

    Bye guys!

Okay. And MY favorite DT moments on Images and Words are:

    - entire instrumental part of TTT. - the instrumental part of Metropolis (it's a little too long and somewhat repetitive but I love it) - Intro of UaGM - Intro of LtL - LtL : the part beginning ~7:52

    Favorite DT moments on Awake:

    - guitar solo on 6:00 - middle part of the intrumental on CiaW - Outro of IF - Erotomania (all of it) - Voices : - the piano in the background during "Love, just don't stare, He used to say....etc..." - the part beginning at "I'm kneeling on the floor..." - the part beginning at "...Cassandra fleeting..." - the part when Mirror goes into Lie

    OTHER THINGS... ---------------

Cygnus -- I hope that Cygnus will get done first before DT:UNP. That's my vote!

Misplaced Childhood -- Someone mentioned how they hated Marillion's FUGAZI album. Well, please give Misplaced Childhood a chance. You won't be disappointed.

Yes, Topographic Oceans -- Glad to hear that there are fans of this album on the ytsejam. I love the album. My opinion is that "Close to the Edge", "Topographic Oceans", and "Relayer" was Yes at their very best. IMO that is...

ELP -- Okay I have ELP's "Brain Surgery" album. That's the only ELP that I have and I really like it. Can someone suggest the next one I should get?

*** Reply to note of 06/24/95 03:06 I don't get this.....sometimes people will post replies to a post that onyl showed up earlier in the same issue of Ytsejam. HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN? How fast of a post writer do you need to be?

BTW, I am in the middle of a custody battle for my I&W disc. A friend of mine who's a major Rush fan had never heard of DT so I did a "borrow" swap with Exit Stage Left. This might have been a huge mistake!!! LATER-

How can ANYONE compile a list of great Bassists and forget Victor Wooten? This man, or god, or Evil Dark Thing From the Other Side Trying to Break Through and Show Mankind Just What Dark Secrets Hide In the Foundations of Musical Reality and Stuff--whew--is completely amazing. He is fast, and complex, and musical, and has been seen to play multiple bass lines and multiple basses at one time. Check out "Blues for Gordon" on THREE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST by Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and listen very closely, count the players you hear, remember that there are three people in the band (save guest piano and sax) and SCREAM IN TERROR--he he, sorry. Really, he is quite good, and I hear his long awaited solo album, A SHOW OF HANDS (sinister meaning (or just minister)?), has finally found a label and will be out in fall. He also can be found of the four Flecktones album and Bela Fleck's newest, TALES FROM THE ACOUSTIC PLANET.

Also really cool is Michael Manring ("a deeply disturbed young man"), who can easily be a band to himself.

    Hi!

Sorry, I know this is off-topic but I don't know where to look!

I've borrowed some gear from friends, a Roland MPU-401 midi-interface, a Roland CM-32L module (yes, old, crappy ;-)) and a keyboard, and now I'm looking for a good, easy-to-use shareware sequencer-program. I have looked at the sites that I usually search for programs, and also looked for appropriate newsgroups but found none.

Could someone please guide me towards a good, useful sequencer program for a PC (386 4mb RAM) w/ or w/o Windows. Maybe you could send it over to me or tell me where to look for it. There must be someone out there with this type of gear!

I'm also in need of drivers for the MPU-401 interface. With the card came two 5.25" disks, but I don't know anybody with both size drives so I can't get the files on the disks! Are they available somewhere on the net?

Sorry to waste Ytse-width with this, but I honestly didn't know where to look and since you're such a friendly bunch I figured maybe I could get some help...

    Thanks!

    /Mats
