Nameless 'Jammer's husband laughed...but also wanted it known that he can

To John Nguyen - Hmmmm...I saw your name in Fido's MUSIC conference, and I was wondering if I'd seen it here as well! It struck me as very familiar... You commented about my "NP: Queensryche - *Warning*" and asked if I'd heard SiD. I met my friend Sharon on Fido's CD_ECHO, and she was on the 'Jam for a while (although I mentioned it to her, I can't take all the credit because Kai told her first <g>). Unfortunately, I'm going through FidoNet withdrawl at the moment - feed problems on the BBS. :(

While there's a few Iron Maiden albums around here, we don't have "Flight of Icarus." What album is that on? We're curious after all the discussion of which song DT should cover...

IMHO that's his best stuff. I have a very limited threshold for the rest of his albums (I'm not saying I don't like Yanni, but I can only handle it in limited doses) - I guess I'd call it overly synthesized. I like "rich" music with a multitude of instruments, and that's what "Live at the Acropolis" is like. You don't even have to rent it, PBS periodically shows it, especially during pledge drives!

It arrived yesterday as I was walking out the door to go to work. I spent the entire time thinking about it. When I got home at 3.00 am I listened to the entire thing.

As far as I know that is the second Subcon Cd sent to New Zealand. If there are any other copies down here I would be interested in contacting the lucky owners.

A BIG THANK YOU TO MIKE!

I await unplugged, money in hand.

    Hey 'jammers,

I'm glad to see someone interested in drummers out there! Seems like guitars have dominated this list recently. My favorite drummers come in two categories: drummers I've seen live, and drummers I haven't. My list of favorites that I haven't seen reads like a list of my favorite bands:

Bill Bruford(Yes et al.): I love his work with ABWH, and his track on the Neil Peart-produced Burning for Buddy album. Tim "Herb" Alexander(Primus et al.): He's so different, so powerful. His style is funky and interesting to listen to. Alex Van Halen(Van Halen): I don't listen to VH very much, but "Hot for Teacher" is enough to get him on this list. Chad Smith(Red Hot Chili Peppers): Nothing really special. He's just so tasty with his funck beats.

As for drummers I have seen live, they just impress me much more:

Jeff Rosenblatt(Spyro Gyra): Maybe I misspelled his name? Anyway, the guy is an incredible chops-monster. Very fast, great style, and a superb solo in the concert. Jeff "Tain" Watts(Branford Marsalis): A terrific jazz drummer. Tight with the band, amazing groove. Also very powerful with explosive solos. Dave Weckl(Chick Corea et al.): I saw Dave at a clinic at the Percussive Arts Society Convention in 1992. He was unreal. He stutters with his right foot like it was a double pedal! He told us that he was working on getting his left foot up to speed. Imagine! He's possibly the most technically skilled drummer out there (although others are certainly close), and his work with Chick Corea has shown him to be quite a good free-form jazz drummer too. Neil Peart(Rush): Neil's solo on the Counterpart tour's San Jose show is probably the coolest thing I've ever seen on drums. His solo was a song, crafted to smoothly move from idea to idea. Those ideas included an intro in the Scottish rudimental style, a hip hop section, and an African-influenced part very similar to Alan White's solo on "Nous somme du soleil" from Tales from Topographic Oceans. It blew everyone in the arena away.

In case you're wondering why I haven't put Portnoy on the list yet, it's because he doesn't fit into the other categories. I've seen him live not in person, but on videotape. So, I've seen him play in his live style, just not actually live. Get it? Anyway:

Mike Portnoy(DT): He's terrific because he play his flaming licks without ruining the songs he plays, quite unlike any other drummer I've ever heard. His solo on the videotape was fairly unimpressive, and quite cheesy. The good news is, he's a better player now. He's gotten away from some of the predictability he showed in I&W. Awake, drum-wise, is a much more interesting album. If his solos have moved in a similar direction, than he's totally amazing. Getting rid of the Tama was a good idea. Now if he'd only get rid of those purple Hot Stix!

Oh, before anyone starts a Peart vs. Portnoy thread (or maybe it has already run before I joined this list?) let me just say this: GET REAL!

At this point in his career, Portnoy has still not showed the unbeleivable, incredible, flaming, destroy the drums yet still make the song absolutely perfect licks that Peart played in songs like Anthem and By-Tor and the Snow Dog. Hell, nobody else has played anything quite that cool on an album besides Peart. Unless Portnoy can do that, then spend another 20 years or so evolving and learning different styles like Peart has, don't even make the comparison. I think Portnoy would agree.

All this without saying anything like "Peart's the best drummer ever!"

    Oh, about concept albums:

Yes' Tales from Top. is mostly pretty boring, though it certainly has its moments. I suggest that anyone out there who really likes this album try some of Rick Wakeman's solo albums, namely "Journey to the Center of the Earth" and "The Six Wives of Henry the Eighth".

To whoever wrote that The Necromancer was a great song: You're the first person I've ever heard who really likes that song! The Fountain of Lamneth, on the other hand, is terrific. What great themes!

Well, that's my 2 cents (or 4 or 8). I try not to post every day since I'm so damned long winded. Later,

    Nathan Meezan

Someone in the last jam said that John P isn't on the level of Alex Lifeson. I SHOULD HOPE NOT! That would be an insult to Mr Petrucci. I'm a big Rush and I think that Alex is a _decent_ guitarist but he has nowhere near the mastery (is that a word?) of the instrument that John does. I've always felt that Alex was the weakest part of Rush and if any member should be (or could be) replaced, it would be him. I mean, what song has the better guitar parts - Learning to Live or Stick It Out? (Not that there is anything really wrong with Stick It Out... " I'm just sayin'... " )

Also, people have been talking about DT doing Iron Maiden songs. I know of at least one they did. I have a tape of a radio show where they played a couple of minutes of "The Trooper". Kevin sings the 1st "You take my life and I'll take yours to" line but then John tries to play the next line on his guitar but it doesn't quite work.

They did a bunch of other assorted bits, some of it may have been more Maiden, but I wouldn't know... -- ************************************************************************** * Jason Hartman "I am the Killing Hand!" lhartm1@gl.umbc.edu * * * * You're fighting the weight of the world, * * and no one can save you this time. * * Close your eyes - you can find all you need in your mind. * * * * "Take the Time" - Dream Theater * **************************************************************************

    >Misplaced Childhood is a much better album than Fugazi, IMO.

I must agree. I purchased Fugazi first, listened to it once, and left it on my shelf to sit forever. I then saw enough positive posts about MC that I went and tracked it down and found it to be much different (i.e., better) than Fugazi. I actually like Clutching at Straws better than both of these because it's a little edgier than MC yet not as angry as Fugazi.

Obligatory DT material--my vote on Fuck in ACOS is no. I'll still buy it but I can't play it with my kids in the room so I'd rather not have it.

P.S. I wore my Ytse jam T-shirt to a Kansas concert last Thursday. 2 guys came up to me and said "That's the greatest band in the world." My response- "I couldn't agree with you more."

My suggestion for the album title's gotta be "Seize the Day", since they say that in ACOS and it just sounds cool: Dream Theater- Seize the Day

    Maybe.

    Just a suggestion!

<Well, Keith and I tend to describe them in terms of who else they sound like. That's good because say someone is a Rush or Kansas fan, then will get them really excited to check it out. We tend describe them as throwing Rush, Kansas, Yes, a little Boston...and a dash of Metallica even...into a blender! :) It really piques curiosity!>

Okay, that one would be great on some people but say like I want to promote the band to another teenager, who probably hasn't heard of Yes or Kansas? How would one go about describing DT then? In a cool way, maybe and also considering most high school students(especially around here) listen only to "alternative". Can anyone help me out here? We should always be introducing DT to more people! We gotta be altruistic, you know? We can't keep hoarding this treasure to ourselves! :)

About the listening vs. analyzing topic, I've "listened" to all of DT's albums many times from beginning to end. But there's only so many times you can just sit there and listen to an album before you have to sit down and analyze the music, listen to it part by part. So I think most of us do appreciate DT as an art form, and in my opinion I think analyzing the music is taking it a step further.

uh... and after reading some other replies to this topic, I think my message goes in the not-so-complex pile...

    DT vs EVH:

REgarding this subject, VanHalen was a great band at one time. They had style, grace and could light up any stage. DT, however, is a band unlike any other. Thier music is exactly what there 2nd CD is titled; Images and Words. None of them are musicians. Each one is a painter and they colorfully invoke a place, a woman, or a lost love with each of their songs. Doesn't each one take you away to a different place, they're "like a painting or an Ivory box" Each one possesses it's own beauty...just my thoughts.

One more thing...I feel that Petrucci's solo in UaGMoon sounds too much like a Vai copy. Just a bug under my cover...

    Also I am fairly new and someone said that the pronuciation of ytsejam had been disscused many times, but what exactly is it? If it is Majesty spelled backwards then it would be pronounced (backwards);

Some of you mentioned they liked Helloween and Blind Guardian. GAMMA RAY have released a new album, "Land Of The Free". If you get a chance to listen to it, give it a try. Power Metal at its best. The leader of the band, Kai Hansen (ex-Helloween guit. and voc.) does vocals himself now, since Ralph Schepers, their old singer, left the band. If you liked the older Helloween albums (esp. Walls of Jericho), you will LOVE this record. Guest vocal appearance by Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween voc.) and Hansi Kuersch (Blind Guardian voc.). IMHO, this album tops Blind Guardians "Imaginations from the Other Side" easily (and I like BG a lot). CYGNUS CD PROJECT UPDATE / SUBCONSCIOUS CONCLUSION current to 6/25/95

This is an update on the status of orders and such things on the Rush "Cygnus" CD... made available exclusively to the members of the Ytsejam list before anybody else. :)

EVEN QUICKER UPDATE: I'm close, I'm VERY CLOSE! A dozen or so more orders for the Cygnus CD will put me in a position to produce it immediately upon the receipt of my supplies order. Please, if you've been considering the buy, and have not yet ordered the CD... please consider doing so. To encourage people to help me out at this critical financial juncture, I've extended the free video offer from the first 150 CDs to the first 300, with twice as many videos available, so please, send in those orders! No limit!! :) Do it today. Here's the no-wait address and cost. Read on for further info on the CD.

$23 check, money order, or cashier's check/traveler's cheque to: Michael Bahr 3175 N. Price Rd. #1066 Chandler, AZ 85224

QUICKIE UPDATE: The blanks have been ordered, so we're back in that 29-day cycle. I don't figure on things taking longer than another 2-2.5 weeks before the shipments begin... if any unforeseen delays crop up, I'll say so. This time, I know what I'm doing, so I'll have a lot of shipments ready-to-go when the CDs are out of the gate, so to speak. Every single iota of work I can get done in advance, will be done in advance. :) I'm already well into the pre-production phase, doing extra mastering work with the sound and with my new DAT recorder, as well as preparing the printed pages (so it will look more "in your face" than the "distinguished" look of Subconscious) and etc. etc. etc... I even have the material orders split between two suppliers in case one is faster than the other! :)

SUBCONSCIOUS: The CDs are finally _gone_. Every copy has been sold. For those of you who are still waiting to get yours, I'm sending them out the day I get the order, so they should be there very very soon. :) I've even sold my own personal extra copies. I can't believe this was so popular!

Now that the CD supply is dry, expect resale prices of the Subconscious disc to go up fast. I would hope nobody plans to purposefully soak would-be buyers with acquired inventory (which is one reason nobody was able to buy more than five of the discs, as a limit) but you can expect that there will be a certain amount of value gained, with it being limited edition, hand-numbered, etc.

Will Subconscious ever be made again? Unless some Italian company copies it, I am sorry to say it will not. One of the explicit conditions I set forth when I made the disc was that it would be very special and limited, and I would be breaking my confidence with the people who have bought it under the understanding it would be a unique, rare release. I swear I don't mean to make people miss out... but a promise is a promise.

THANKS EVERYONE for being a part of this! You all RULE! :)

DISCLAIMER: Cygnus falls into a grey area under law as an uncopyrighted recording produced in such a manner that at least one facet of the production occurs in a country (namely Italy) in which it is legal to do so. In the USA, it is permissible to sell used import CDs only if they are labeled as such. This is such a CD. Be aware that the various powers-that-be are collecting nothing for this.

Of course, that's all cover-my-butt lawyerspeak. I hope you all will want to be a part of this. I make roughly minimum wage doing it, so you know I'm not out to scam you. In all humility, I appeal to anyone who might not think too kindly of my endeavor, and ask that they might give me the benefit of the doubt on this one. Friends? :)

    1. What the hell is Cygnus? 2. When can I order and how? 3. Orders received. =============================================================================

    1. What the hell is Cygnus?

Hi all, I'm Mike Bahr, humble maker of special edition CDs. Earlier this year, in an effort that is still ongoing, I made available a special, _very_ limited edition Dream Theater CD called Subconscious. I didn't know if the project would work at all, since I had to use my own money to finance the project, and had to be very close on costs to even make it a non-loss financially. But you responded, Ytsejammers!

The CD sold, sold, and sold some more. In fact, the entire limited edition print of 500 copies, each hand-numbered and signed in gold by myself, sold out entirely to you, the most devoted fans of Dream Theater on earth.

And I do mean _Earth_! I got orders from the USA, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Austria, Great Britain, Ireland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Israel, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, Greece, and a few more countries I am sure I have forgotten to mention. Truly, the WORLD made Subconscious a success for me and for the Jam, so I'm going to hope that Cygnus will be another one! My heart goes out to all of you in every country of the world for joining in!

What I did was work with a pressing plant using rental equipment and some of my own as well, and an exhausting three months of preparation, packaging, and mailing, not to mention production of the CD, and a million other things, and made it a reality. I was relieved beyond words when I read the positive comments people had for it online.

Cygnus is the project I will do to fill the gap between Spring 1995's Subconscious and Autumn 1995's WHEN DREAM AND JAMES UNITE. Cygnus will be a recording from an ultra-rare Rush show, the single best sounding Rush show in existence, from the mystical Hemispheres tour of 1978-79. I will only print 1000 copies... beyond that, there shall be no more.

This time, the first 150 copies will be hand-signed and marked for collector value, to add to the "specialness" of the CD, but the rest will be equally rare anyway, so expect this to be a true gem in your collection.

Here's the information on the show.

Title: Rush "Cygnus" Source: True soundboard reel-to-reel, original length 83 min Running time: 75 min Venue: Convention Center Arena (TCC Arena) Location: Tucson, Arizona Date: November 20, 1978 Generation: Transferred to 48kHz DAT from a 2nd gen analog. Quality: Beyond comparison. Higher than "Oakland '92" and "Pinkpop".

Setlist: Anthem A Passage to Bangkok By-Tor and the Snow Dog Xanadu Something for Nothing The Trees Cygnus X-1 Book 1: The Voyage Cygnus X-1 Book 2: Hemispheres I. Prelude II. Apollo III. Dionysus IV. Armageddon V. Cygnus VI. The Sphere Closer to the Heart Circumstances A Farewell to Kings La Villa Strangiato

Also on the original tape was a cut-off version of the beginning of 2112, the Overture and then half of the Temples section. In order to make Cygnus fit onto a single CD, I cut those seven minutes out of the DAT. Everyone has a live 2112 on ATWAS album, anyway.

Now that I sort of "have the hang of it" where CDs are concerned, I will be trying to put together some colorful art for the CD and cover. For those who didn't get one, Subconscious had a gold-on-black motif, much like the Terminator-2 and Star Wars laserdisc box-sets. It was dignified, and direct. And now, for Cygnus, I want to really make people say "wow!"

    2. Where can I order and how?

Okay, here's the deal. Anyone remember how long it took my blanks shipment to get to me when I did Subconscious? Twenty-nine days, it did. And I placed the order for Cygnus blanks a few weeks ago. Used a faster supplier. Now, this time, I originally had planned not to even ANNOUNCE Cygnus until I had the CDs in hand. However, so many of you are leaving for the summer and/or want early copies like last time, that I will go ahead and do a pre- order deal again.

Why, you may ask, should I send the money, if I won't get the CD for a while, though?

Well, you don't have to. But you can. I strongly urge you to consider it. Here's why.

Here's how it works. I don't want anyone feeling uncomfortable sending me a payment when in all truth, your CD might take a month to get to you. So I will divulge as much information as I can to make it a sound decision on your part. For those who wish to wait, there will be NO penalty; simply order when I get the CDs in shipment. For those who order early, in an effort to reward their confidence in my project and in gratitude for them getting the ball rolling early, I will be shipping CDs out in the order they were received... thus, you'll get it sooner. Furthermore, this time I'm going to run a little contest. A random 25 people in the first 300 orders (this will be done with a computer randomizer) will get a free copy of a special video montage, just as an added bonus and a thank-you for being a part of this. I think I might make two or three different montages and throw them in at random into the sets... one Rush, one Dream Theater, one Live, one Queensryche and maybe one of all sorts of progressive bands. Or more! :)

    How to order!!!

Remember when Subconscious came out, and I said certain costs were permanent, and had gone into the production cost? I didn't lie... Cygnus will be CHEAPER than Subconscious was. The price will be $23. For anyone in Canada ordering, add only $1 for postage. For anyone outside North America, add $2 for postage (so it would be the same price as Sub) and that will take care of it. There's a lot of bean-counting that I do to come up with those numbers, so trust me, it's what it amounts to. Plus, you can order as MANY Cygnus discs as you want, because you on the Jam are getting a shot at it before I offer it anywhere else.

Please use a money order if you can. The reason is simple: it's safe! I know you paid and you know I have it (it's traceable). And you know if you don't get a CD or a refund, I'll go to jail.

For international orders, I will indeed accept cash if you wish. I urge you to be careful, because every order for Subconscious that contained cash made it safely to me, but that might not always be the case. I don't want anybody to lose their money. For orders of 2 or more Cygnus discs, a travellers cheque or international money order is economical to use. If you decide to use cash, please wrap it tight in a thick envelope and try to hide it, so that nobody will steal it.

Please allow 6-8 weeks for delivery. It will actually be closer to 4 or 4 and a half weeks, but in order to be safe, I'm giving you the extreme possibility. Understand that, as with Subconscious, I'll be making every effort to get them sent fast and soon. And now, I know a few things I can be doing to get them done faster than I did with Sub... like pre-making the mailing lists, supplies, process, etc.

    Here's what to do.

Send your payment, along with your Name, Address to ship it to, Internet email address (in case I need to contact you), how MANY CDs you want, and, optionally, your phone number. I say optionally, because I know some of you want to keep them unlisted.

Send all this to: Michael Bahr 3175 N. Price Rd. #1066 Chandler, AZ 85224 (USA)

If you wish to speak to me for any reason, including questions, comments, suggestions, or you just want to chat with another dedicated fan of Rush and Dream Theater, you are very welcome to call me at 1-602-777-0501. I am usually home between 11am and 9pm Mountain Standard Time. Please use this phone number with proper discretion, however, as I will be very confused if you call me at 3:00 in the morning.

    3. Orders received.

This time, I'm in the thick of finishing the Sub project, and Cygnus is coming along just dandy as well... and I will be able to confirm that an order was received if you email me about it. I won't be posting a long list to the Jam because of complaints I received about the Sub listing.

For the most part, all orders usually get through. If you want to confirm yours PERSONALLY, feel free to do so, via email or voice.

Well that about wraps it up for this update of the CYGNUS CD project. Everyone be excellent to each other, and party on dudes!

Don't panic European jammers. It's not definite yet! > I have phoned Rockhouse in Salzburg where DT will play on July 1st, and > they said the show was not cancelled up to now. There is still hope!!

So it appears that the only gig they (DT) have cancelled on this tour is the one in Finland. :-( They definitely didn't play at Nummirock Festival, and I would like to hear the reason for this. A Finnish gig couldn't be crammed onto the back of the new tour shirt?-)

Let's see if Marillion will come to Finland on their forthcoming AOS tour; no date yet, but I'm hoping! --- Mika Lietzen / Weltmacht oder niedergang! (miklie@utu.fi) /

    Jammers',

Just returned home from my trip in Europe. It was with out a doubt the best trip I have ever taken. First of all the plane ticket was payed for by the company i work for(i did have some seminars to go to!), second i drank alot of great German beer and thirdly I got to go see DT in Lichtenfels!!! Now this was my second time seeing DT and I was really psyched up to here ACoS live, but I won't really get into the main concert reviews cause my friend paul posted that a few days ago. I really just want to post what made the night so special. Well the closing song was Take the Time(which is my fav DT song) and i was totally mezmerized by the extended ending....anyway all the guys come out to the from of the stage to say their goodbuys and all of a sudden i see this thing that looked like a frisbee come my way!!! Well I got 2 hands on it, but there were also about 5 or six more hands on it and thanks to my friend paul only my hands were left. When I looked down it was Mike Portnoys drum head!!!!!! SIgned and autographed by him!!!! Now i was totally in shock because nothing like this happens to me. I got a guitar pick at a scorps concert once but never anything like this. Well anyway I guarded it with my life as i walked out the door. After My friend and i walked out back to get some stuff autographed by the band. I got some og my CD liners signed and I got the drum head signed by everybody! SO i have this wonderfull momento of the best concert hanging on my wall with the signatures of everybody in the band!!! What an unblievable night!! Just wanted to share that with all of you!!!(and to brag of course :) )

    A couple of other notes:

On the thred of where people live. I am on the west coast, actually in Fresno CA to be exact!

Also I have some bad news for fellow west coast jammers! I asked Mike if they would be coming back to the West coast on this tour and he said "No, not until the next album" He then went on to say that they would be doing a few more shows around the new york area and then take some time off before going back into the studio. Now this could all change but I just wanted to let everybody know.

    Later,

    Mark
