I don't know what kind of feedback Mike is getting personally,
but the few opinions posted publicly seem to be ~ 50/50.
Although I'd rather see Cygnus done first (and so would a
friend of mine who already gave me money to send away for
it), since this is a Dream Theater list, it would be more
appropriate to do DTUP first. Count that as my vote.
Besides, when I asked a certain Sacramento 'jammer (who
shall remain nameless !>)> if she was going to get the
Cygnus CD, she replied that she wasn't really *that much*
into Rush (I would've slapped you if your husband wasn't
there!).

I know this has probably been discussed many times, but since I'm a new subscriber, and a HUGE MP fan, I'm curious to know some of your favorite drummers out there, besides the obvious. Some of mine are MP, Neil Peart, Simon Phillips, Bill Bruford, Phil Collins, Jeff Porcaro, Liberty Devito(Billy Joel),Scott Rockenfeld, etc. I would like to hear other choices, and why they are fans. If this subject is redundant (sp?), my apologies, but hey, I'm new!
I hear some of you jammers out there mention Fates Warning quite a bit. I have only heard one album (Parallels), and to be honest, they did absolutely nothing for me. Do they have better albums, or should I let it grow on me a bit more. Let me know if I'm totally out to lunch here.
My vote for best "concept" album is not even close, because it is also my fave album of all time....."The Wall". Tied for second..."Mindcrime", "Hempispheres", "Dark Side", Misplaced Childhood", "Clutching at Straws", "Tales from Topographic Oceans", "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway", "Tommy".

It recently occured to me that my two favorite songs about mortality/death both have a Shakespearian connection. 'Pull Me Under' is based on Hamlet, and 'Don't Fear the Reaper' alludes to Romeo and Juliet. Here's my suggestion for an interesting list activity -- come up with rock songs that mention, quote, or otherwise imply a Shakespeare play. If you respond be sure to give the name of the band, album and song, and quote part of the relevant lyric. (Note to Marillion fans, I'm not sure whether that bit in "Charting the Single" should count).
I realise this isn't directly DT related, but neither is the thread about "what do you do for a living" and that one is quite popular.

Caution: skip if you hate bands like Metallica, Queensryche and Nine-Inch-Nails
After warning certain people against buying echolyn albums, I have another band to recommend to those of you who enjoy the metal side of prog. This is a band that I would guess many of you are unaware of, since I've never heard it mentioned on any internet lists and I've never heard it on the radio. The name of the band is 'Course of Empire'. Their first, self-titled, album deals with many of the same themes as 'Awake'-- it criticises organized religion, but from a different point of view. The album focuses on the Middle East and doesn't make a distinction between Christianity, Judesim, and Islam. I'd classify the album "Course of Empire" as prog/metal. (In as much as I'd give Metallica this classification. The band lacks "Tony Banks-esque keyboards, but revels in intelligent, talented, innovative music & lyrics) A couple of songs (or parts of songs) remind me of The Moody Blues, but at other times the music is of the "headbanger" genre.
Their second album, "Initiation could just as easily be categorized as 'industrial' as 'metal', although it doesn't yield easily to categorization of any sort. If you love the Nine-Inch-Nail's song "Closer", you will probably love the Course of Empire song "Breed". (Any of you who posted messages saying that the word "fuck" offended you will have to miss out on this sort of musical experience).
To me, the most important parts of a piece of music are the lyrics (to attach a message to the music) and the percussion (to drive the force of the message into one's soul). Before I learned anything about Course of Empire, I was impressed by their percussion, comparable to that of Genesis and Peter Gabriel. I later read that they have 2 percussionists, which would explain the rich sound.
I'll end by quoting a critic cited on the Course of Empire web page (link to it via my page). "This band easily blows away most of the high-selling alternative crap, call them an alternative to alternative." This critic (Nigel Tuffnel) gives Course of Empire a 9 out of 11 rating.

I'm pretty sure about my changes, but I could get my hymn book and check to be sure
Someone mentioned something about JP playing classical arpeggios well. I don't know about that. I think he plays 'em too fast. Notable examples include the arpeggios after the incredible tapping solo in AFIL (EVH would like that) ESPECIALLY on LatM. It sounds like about 3 notes. The other example is at the end of the solo in Scarred, there are two arpeggios that are also too fast. I've always thought it sort of ruined the otherwise "perfect" solo by having 2 arpeggios there. I would have preferred one at half tempo. I really like the arpeggios that Yngwie pulls off because his picking is so articulate and clear. The one at the end of Far Beyong the Sun is about the best 14-notes-in-one-second deal I've ever heard. Wanna argue about JP and YM, go ahead, but I'd say that JP has a bit more emotion and songwriting ability and is by FAR a better lyricist. Yngwie's lyrics suck, so I've only got his first album (and Odyssey, but I tried to sell it because I hate the lyrics). Yngwie is a very clean and technical player with a unique style, which I also like. I don't care who's better, cuz they're both better than me (for now).
I still reserve the right to musically analyze the songs. It's what makes this list interesting. I also like the production stuff, because I'm pretty ignorant in that regard and enjoy learning. Thanks. Does anyone know whether DT's CDs are AAD, ADD, DDD or what? I've looked on the packaging and couldn't find. Awake sounds ADD or DDD.
JP vs. VH. It is quite true that VH has little structure to his solos, but that's his deal. My solos aren't like Petrucci's either. To judge on that, you have to set a standard and get the whole world to agree to it. Again, who cares.
I;ve been gone...is it possible to get copies of InstruMental I or II still? I need more music for the dorms next year!

If that's all the Ytsejammers did, I don't think Ytsejam would have a reason to exist anymore. I see Ytsejam as being a forum for fans of Dream Theater who just can't get enough. I mean, without dissection, there's only so much one can say about a piece of work. The fact is much "art" has meaning on multiple layers; one can simply look at the surface, or break it down into its smaller components. Is this destroying the masterpiece? IMHO, I think not. A lot of prog listeners are drawn to the genre by a love for the complexity and technicality of music.
You, as a new Ytsejammer, missed my painting analogy. I described how a lot of non-musicians (myself included) can appreciate the band without an intricate knowledge of music. I commented that it's like a casual art viewer who knows nothing about foreground versus background and can't identify pointilism or imposto, but s/he appreciates the sum of all the efforts. This is not to imply that the non-artist's opinion is more valid than the artist's, it's just *different*.

Actually, some names aren't really tongue twisters or that difficult to pronounce, but people mangle them anyway (I know that from personal experience with my own surname!) Keith works with someone named Ibrahim - something I think one would prounounce just as it looks - yet he's called "Abraham" constantly! He also happens to be from Israel, but he's Arabic...

Yes, although I think it may be quite some time before I need to do so (since it's so small, I don't think it takes up a lot of power). One of the very first things I did was take apart all the packaging to check it out (amusing my hubby to no end).

Misplaced Childhood is a much better album than Fugazi, IMO. I bought Misplaced Childhood first and Fugazi I don't like as much. Check it out. I think you'll like it a lot.
