    To continue on the concept album thread, here are my favorite concept
    albums in no particular order:
    Queensryche - Operation:Mindcrime
    Pink Floyd - The Wall, The Dark Side of the Moon
    Jellyfish - Spilt Milk anyone into these guys? Fans of the
    Beatles and Queen look no further
    Slint - Spiderland real mellow and strange...nothing like it.

    The Who - Tommy

    Now, to elaborate on that, my favorite epic songs in no particular
    order:
    Rush - "The Necromancer," "The Fountain of Lamneth." Anyone like
    Caress of Steel as much as I do? Probably not. And of course,
    "2112"
    Echolyn - "Letters" Any word on re-releasing their first three
    albums?
    Dream Theater - "Duh"

    I bought Marillion's "Fugazi" a long time ago. I didn't really like
    it that much and sold it. I have been reading your posts about
    "Misplaced Childhood" and also when I was in am electronic forum with
    Mike Portnoy, he said it was a great album. But anyway, should I
    give these guys a second chance and pick this disc up? I know there
    are a lot of Marillion fans on this list, so I'd appreciate whether
    you think this is a much different album than "Fugazi." Waddaya
    think?

    Also, does anyone have iny info on whether or not Echolyn will be re-
    releasing their first three LP's? Or if they will be in Ohio on tour?

            Actually, I heard this on the radio yesterday, too. I can't
            understand why DT's management would lie to the festival
            organizers here in Finland. Everyone thought the booking
            was definite. Their name was printed all over in ads and
            fliers and everything. They cancelled their appearance at
            the Nummirock festeival only 3 days before the actual
            happening. Sounds very late to me. Maybe they think we're
            not worth them or something. On I&W tour they forgot us,
            too. They apologized this on the Awake tour, and PROMISED
            TO COME HERE ON THEIR NEXT TOUR. Liars. Well, I wouldn't have
            wanted to see ACoS live, anyway.. sigh.. :(

            Actually, funny.. I used to be a very big fan, but it has
            started to fade. I don't listen to DT so much anymore.
            I've moved back to my old favorites, such as Yngwie
            Malmsteen and Toto etc.. Awake is a depressing album,
            and I liked I&W because it was so positive and not so
            dark. And now they decide not to come to Finland.. Maybe
            because we're such a small country? Maybe they wanted
            more money? (I always thought Awake was a sad attempt at
            trying to be commercial.) Do I sound bitter? Well, I am.

    Hey everybody - a few short topics:

    1) Flotsam and Jetsam are awsome. Their lead singer and J. Labrie are probably the best metal vocalists today - I mean this guy's voice chokes! for example: in the (briliant) song wadin' through the darkness the guy just steal the show from thrash master guitarists and (my oppinion) wonderfull new bass player. Really a great badnd: cuatro is their best BTW.

    2) I&W versus Awake: Awake is better. There are a few dimensions to be considered when a band like dream theater is envolved. There is the techincal factor or a display of technical abilities which we all agree I&W is better on that subject, although I must say awake has it's moments on that subject: JP's neo-classical parts on erotomania and INNOCENCE FADED outro etc. Mike Portnoy's parts are stronger on awake - he controls the groove much better and it really shows he put a lot of thought and feel into his parts. John Myung (the king) is 78% on the album - a great disappointment for me - I expected him to show his talent more but instead he put his head (and instrument) down on awake while on IAW he displayed spactacular talent and gave 100% on the entire album - one of the things I like about the king is his amazing ability to always say in his music: "Friends! I'm not the ordinary bassist that sometimes you cannot hear". Pitty. Kevin moore returned to basics on awake - I liked him more on I&W where he (among the others) was one of the main reasons dream thater is not a regular band - it's a band which run away from stereotypes and tradition like a mouse from a cat... Awake is maybe the oppsite of that: DT is getting closer to regularities. Pitty. James however has shown hidden talents - he displays different vocal styles as well as keeping the awsome voice he is so greatly gifted of - James is great.

    So why is awake still better the IAW?

    Awake is the embodiment of the idea of a band. A band is togetherness - Being many but being one. Different Beings create a much larger and stronger being. Dream Theater plays and behaves (musically) like a band now. on every and each second on awake the music is whole - Dream Theater is a concept. On IAW: I go a lot of times: "Jesus! JP is blasting the sky like a god!" or: "This John Myung (the king), I can't believe the things he can do - wow. ". On awake however I never think like that: sometimes I hear the songs and forget it's a band - for all I know it could be an extremely talented and coordinatative OCTYPUS.

    We can all be sure dream thater is going up and not down.

    3) About the guitarists: Let me add some to the list:

    Greg Howe ( a briliant brriliant (!!) guitar player - check him out). Michael Lee firkins - An awsome rocker (a bit progressive)_. UZEB's michel cusso - oh man - UZEB is great and michel is even greater.

    VAI,Satriani,Melmstein,JP,Marty friedman are also included.

    BTW: While you're at it - all of you bass player - what bassists do you like?

    My faves are: John Patituci,Jaco,Alain Caron, Stanly Clark, Michael Manring, Joe Hubbard, Les Claypool, Geddy lee, John Myung (the king), Marcus Miller, Doug Wimbish, Robert Trujilio.

    4) JP versus Van Halen: I totally agree with the guy who said that VH just revolutionized the guitar world. The ROBINSON/JABBAR comparison is my thought - Good point man! JP is a better player though - and offcourse a much talented and somewhat contrevertial song writer.

    5) Favorite Dream Theater moments: Combined solos on TTT. Kevin's solo on Under a Glass Moon (Awsome). JP's solo on ANOTHER DAY. Learning To Live (the whole damn thing). CIAW chorus. All John Myung's (the king) parts. And also - WDADU,IAW,AWAKE.

    Oh I almost forgot - PMU's ending in LIVE AT THE MARQUEE.

    6) It wasn't that long.

    Well since I have been hearing all these rave reviews of the solo DT shows in Germany I think a friend of mine and myself might try to make one of these shows. Since we are in Hamburg it seems that most of the shows close to us are over all ready. And since a lot of Jammers seem to be going to the Saarbruken show I thought that maybe we might be able to make the journey to Saarbruken from Hamburg. On this topic I had a few questions:

    First since we don't have a car we will probably need to take a train. Does Saarbruken have a train station? And I don't suppose anyone has any idea what a round trip ticket from Hamburg and back might cost?

    Second how does one go about getting tickets to the show? Is there some place that I can call where I can order tickets or should I just take the chance of getting them at the door? Is there something like Ticketmaster here in Germany? How much _are_ the tickets to the show by the way? And how many people does this venue hold? Oh...is the venue anywhere near the train station? And what might be the easiest way to get from one to the other?

    Third might anyone in Saarbruken be able to put up two Jammers for the night? I don't think that we would be able to catch a train that late at night when the show ends and I don't like the idea of sleeping on a park bench.

    So if anyone down by Saarbruken can help me out with these details I think that I would owe you a beer *grin* at least. Please e-mail me back directly so as we don't clutter up the list anymore than it is. Now back to our regularly scheduled program.......

I have enrolled in the National Guitar Summer Workshop (NGSW) for their Bass Summit, featuring Dave LaRue (Steve Morse Band & Dixie Dregs) and Steve Bailey, during the first week of August. When I opened the confirmation letter, lo and behold, they announced that John Petrucci will be conducting a workshop there on August 1! YYEESS! Given that New Milford CT is fairly close to Long Island, it makes sense. I guess I have to skip bass class that day! Maybe some of you Ytseguitarjammers may try and register for the last few slots.

    I say, "No". Yes, it's a great song but it's too simple for DT. Sure it's almost 13 mins. long, but it might bore them. Now, I am a HUGE Iron Maiden fan and have been since '83 and again I would suggest that they cover either "Infinite Dreams" or "The Prophecy" off of the Seventh Son album. If you haven't heard these songs, go do it.

    Re: I&W Kick -

    First of all, it's not a kick drum you're hearing. It's a sampled kick drum. The kick & snare on that CD were replaced by triggered drums.

    A crappy sounding live kick is better than a great sounding sampled kick any day, in my book. And Mike's kick was really well recorded on AWAKE.

    And, since none of MY speakers reproduce 30hz (my old car stereo got down to about 35hz) and I don't have an oscilloscope, I didn't notice the problem...however, bear in mind that with frequencies that low, you're gonna feel that more than you hear it. Ya know those people who have kick boxes in their cars, and play music that has that kick drum that is nothing more than a gated 40hz tone? (and there's also one that's a gated 30 hz tone, if I'm not mistaken). Ever notice how windows rattle when they drive by? =)

    Besides, feeling nice 30hz overtones is a beautiful thing, man. =)

    I have an Israeli friend named "Tzippy" Most people mispronounce it "Zippy" when a closer pronounciation would be "Sippy". Actually, the "T" is barely hinted at (like tse-tse), but most people are too lazy to pronounce it that way. "Myung" seems like more of a tounge-twister, or maybye not.

    It is true that Berklee is oriented toward jazz even though the majority of students are rock. When I was there all the performance stuff was jazz. Rock guys were writing chord solos to play at their tests. Anyway, I think they're a combination just because I think rock is closer to classical than jazz. From jazz, DT may have a better understanding of more and varied chord structures and harmonies. From classical, other influences such as the composed sound of their songs. I remember Vai saying that he always learns his solos so he can play them live because that's what people want to hear. When he'd go to a concert, he wanted to hear the solo from the album. I played in a rock band and we improvised a lot. People criticized us because we were too diverse. I've since decided to play much more structured and definite (at least in my bass lines) although I still tend to improvise some stuff. However, even the improvised stuff has set guides. A sort of skeleton but I'll change some notes. That would be my strong Geddy Lee influence I think. Hope I didn't get too off the subject.

    I did the same, and had the same reaction although I did like it at first. Is this one of their weaker albums?

    I should be wrapping up the first version of the DT Song Book within the next couple of days. This will contain all of DT's lyrics both album cuts and unreleased (as far as I know). What I need to know are some appropriate FTP sites to send it to and what format will be good for everybody (currently it is a 70K straight ASCII text, when zipped it is about 20K). I will put it on my service provider's FTP server and should soon have a Web page where you can get it as well.     For that guy who says we shouldn't analyze things, I am shocked!! What purpose does this board have? As near as I can tell it is for sharing DT tour Dates, swapping bootlegs, and wasting bandwidth analyzing things. The purpose (I find, and I think most others will too) of analyzing stuff is to understand and to impress more, the art. What would Shakespear be without analysis. Sure, Bach is nice to listen to, but he truly becomes a treasure when you know what it is he's doing and where he's going. By analyzing the songs, you get more out of it. The same rings true for books, poetry, films, paintings, photographs, theater, essays, journalism, set design, et cetera, ad infinitum, ad absurum, ad nauseum. . . If you don't want to lose your introductory understanding and your first impressions of the pieces, then I suggest that you sign off this mailing list. Scratch that, I suggest you stop listening to the albums, and just hear them live and remember them. You might accidentally catch some depth in the pieces, or a small critique of their style if you keep listening to them. Sorry, just flaming, no offence intended.

    I enjoyed the article, and stuff like that, when not redundant, is definitely good usage of the bandwidth. It does sound like Charlie has a something of an ego, the way he was bragging and all that. . .

    Whatever. If Eddie's in a slump, then why are his albums always selling well? Why is he always featured in guitar magazines via interviews, transcriptions, articles, and readers' polls? Why does his tour consistently sell out shows across the country, uh, world? I'm not saying sales, media coverage, and popularity is a proof of success; I'm saying that Edward Van Halen and co. are doing something pretty damn well.

    As far as EVH not influencing, JP, come on. EVH influenced some of JP's influences, so JP would be indirectly influenced. I'm sure JP would admit that Eddie had some impact on the guitar.

    Finally, for those of you who think JP is "the Complete Guitarist," you are entitled to your opinion, but ignorance is not bliss. Anytime I see comparisons with JP to other players, it's always Satch, Vai, EVH, etc. I never see non-prog-rock/hard rock/metal players. I would assume that DT fans are more open-minded about music than others, and I all see are the same 5 names showing up again. I've never heard JP play classical guitar, jazz, funk, country, bluegrass, flamenco, reggae, etc. How can someone be a "Complete guitar player" if they only concentrate on one genre? IMO, "best" (insert instrument here) titles are crap. Who am I to say that Django Reinhardt was better than Charlie Christian who was better than Wes Montgomery? Forget it. I'd rather listen to music than bitch about who's better than who all the time.

    Music is a holistic art form. Stop whining about who can play 20-finger tapping and practice your respective instrument. Remember, there will always be someone who is better than you. Even better than JP.
