Great. "Suck, blown off, cooll, orgasmiclly, etc. ..." Please,
I don't care about your typos, but this isn't the kind of context that I
usually associate with Dream Theater. I would love to see Jimi Hendrix
with the Experience or the Band of Gypsys being "blown off the stage" by
DT. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge DT fan, but as far as longevity and
large followings, other bands also come into mind: Police, the Quintet
with Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, Miles Davis with his Blue
Note-era musicians, Giant Steps-period Coltrane, the latest incarnation
of King Crimson, and my favorite concert, Queensryche's Road to the
    Promised Land.

Hey Ben!! Thanks for giving me such an applause here! I enjoy it!! :)

For this I&W vs. AWAKE thing: I like both albums very much but I think IMHO
AWAKE is the better one. I like it more because it's kind of more rough
than I&W. It sounds a little harder and better. Perhaps I like it more
because the guitar is sooooo crunchy. JP has an incredible sound, both
on AWAKE and live and that's something that's really hard to find.
    Seems like there's a JP-Fan writing here... RIGHT!!! :)

can meet so that we don't miss eachother. Could just be in front of

    Hello Ytsejammers,

These few lines are for the guy who is interested in the things we
(ytsejammers) do besides reading and posting:
I'm a undergraduate student at the University of Technology in Eindhoven,
Holland (that's in Europe for those guys on the other continents). At the
moment I'm doing a research for Philips Hearing Instruments at the Insitute for
Perception Research. I try to find answers about how one's ears are working.
This means that I bloody well know what those DT-sounds do with your ears...
(physically I mean, not psychologically) Yes, I like those sound -vibrations
    too.
Are there other dutch sophiticated DT-fans?
P.S.: Be aware of the fact that this info about what the ytsejammers do for
their work is not a 100% reliable research. Only those who have a computer with
mail-facilities can respond to this questionnaire. This means that you won't
find any housewives or milkmen, simply because of the fact that they do not
    have those tremendous mailing tools.

                                            --Fish, "Incommunicado"

FUCK is a fine word to use. To say otherwise is to be one of the upperclass
    oppressors (there's a reason it's called "vulgar" and "profane"--common
and against the Church, which are both not bad thing). If the word is not
used to say something stupid (no one has given the lyrical context yet),
then I think it's fine that DT want to use it.

Even though they changed the song, I hope it still rocks as well as the old
version...maybe they should have both the studio version and the live version
from the bootlegs on the new CD. If the current setup is for only 40 minutes,
then they'll have time for that.

If the gods are listening, consider this.

PS To the person asking occupations of ytsejammers, I am a corporate slave
for McDonald's, as well as a poet and game designer.

PPS I like Awake better than I&W because I only really like three songs
from I&W. For me, the competition is whether I like Awake or WDADU better.

PPPS And also, which is the best album known, Operation: Mindcrime
    or Epilog?

Hi! Who is going to see DT on July 1st in Salzburg/Austria? I will be there, wearing my brand new Ytsejam t-shirt (thanx Jason!! - it arrived today). The "Rockhouse" is VERY small, so get your tickets quickly!

FYI: If you want to order tickets, some telephone numbers: "Rockhouse" is +43-662-884917-0 (I dont know if they send tickets via mail). A record shop which does send via mail: "Bootleg" +43-662-843107-0 "Bank Austria" sells tickets, too (auch fuer nicht-Club-Mitglieder).

    See ya!

I'd have to go with Images and Words. For some reason I really like the production on Images and Words. The over processed, too perfect kinda sound, fits in with the perfect, machine like playing and composition that makes up the album. I usually don't like trigger drums (i'm a drummer myself) but I'll take the trigger snare to Mikes untrigger inconsitent snare any day. I can't pin point any locatations at the moment but there are tons of places on Awake were his snare drum kinda disappears in the mix cause he is not playing it at the same volume or hitting the same spot on the drum (yes I know what ghost notes are, I'm not talking about using dynamics or anything...). That gets on my nerves alot more than the triggered sound. That is probably the biggest reason that Prater decided to go with the trigger snare, to make it sound nice and even. (Although he should have made the trigger a little more touch sensitive to get a bit of dynamics going on.)

Now onto the music. For the most part, I feel that the songs on I&W's are FAR superior to those on Awake. I think that the main reason is that the I&W's songs were around for such a long time before the album came out. They had more time to make everything perfect instead of just good enough. Did you know that it took 3 months to right Metropolis and 3 months to write ALL OF AWAKE?! I think that says alot right there! I think if they could have given Scarred another few months to "cook", it could have been the next Learning to Live. Scarred has some GREAT spots but it just doesn't pull me and hold my attention for 11mins like Learning to Live does. I read an interview with Mike and he was talking about how they kinda felt rushed in the studio trying to come up with songs for the album. He was saying how they had 3 years to work on the stuff for I&W's and they just kept redemoing and reworking everything. He was talking about how they had alot of ideas for the Awake songs from soundchecks and stuff. "This time around we had alot of that creative energy building up, so when it came time to write, it was like bing, bang , boom - it was all coming together very quickly and in a lot of cases we would right a whole song in one or two rehearsals." I don't think Learning to Live could have been written in one or two rehearsals. I hope that thier record company doesn't rush them as much on the next album. I wouldn't mind waiting an extra year or two for them to come up with another masterpiece.

I also prefer James' singing style on Images. I don't like when he gets all gritty, its ok live but I don't really like it on the album. For you big Awake fans, go back and listen to Images if you haven't done it in a while, listen to the vocals. Ahhh! Awesome!

I also like the bigger role of the keys on Images, that was probably the 1st thing that caught my attention, especially the solos!

BTW - I think 6:00 is one of the worst DT songs! It should be on the Vai album Sex and Religion, not on something with the name Dream Theater on it.

Ah what the hell, lets make this a little longer! :) Another thing that I don't like about Awake is the choruses in general. I don't know what it is, maybe James came up with the melodies for them or something and maybe its just not my style but I really can't stand many of the choruses on Awake. "Memory flies out the winDOOOOOOW". "Lifting Shadows of dreeeeeeeam once broken" (actually I really like the rest of that song, that part just bugs me). "Voooooooices raPEEEEEEEEEEE EEEDing meeeee" (for some reason, I do like the chorus on Inn Faded, it doesn't bug me)

Well I guess thats enough to get the flamer throwers out. :) I'll be changing into my flame-proof suit to protect my self from all of you Awake fans.

BTW - how many people on here have recently gotten into DT? I wouldn't think there would be too many, since the Awake songs didn't get alot of air-play. I would guess that the majority of DT fans came around when PMU was all of the radion and MTV (thats how I got started).

    'jammers,

Has anyone heard of Flotsam and Jetsam? I just bought one of their CD's and thought it was pretty cool. It is fairly progressive in the sense that there are a lot of changes in tempo and sound (distorted/clean) as well as a little offbeat drumming. They are also fairly heavy. I would recommend it for a listen!

This CD I believe is called Cuatro (1992). Can anyone comment on the others (ie new one and older ones)?

Ytsejammers, one and all - unite! Both _Images and Words_ and _Awake_ are technically superior to any other albums in my collection. Both CD's stand out as landmarks in progressive metal - Dream Theater kicks ass, and that's all there is to it. As far as which album is 'better', I think it is purely a matter of aesthetics and musical taste. I like _Awake_ better, and I'll tell you why: I&W converted me to DT, but Awake appealed to me more musically. I like the change in style between the two albums. To me, a band that sounds the same from album to album quickly stagnates and loses interest for me. Dream Theater could have continued in the jazzy-classical sounding mode they played on I&W, but they continued to break NEW ground and their style and sound naturally changed with them. I&W, while still a SUPERB album, seems to me to be idealistic lyrically. They come across with a sort of 'kids with a dream' attitude on that album. On _Awake_, they portray a sense of 'awareness' of the reality of life that is absent on I&W. Also, the drums on I&W are too repetitive - TOO precise. _Awake_ strikes me as a purer album - less engineering. DT remains the 'Greatest Band in the World.' I remain their most driven and obsessive fan, - Rob "Wearing apathetic displays Sharing flesh like envy in cages Condescending not intending to end..."

*** Reply to note of 06/19/95 09:09 Everyone's talking about Pink Floyd's material being better than the Ryche's "Mindcrime". IMHO, there's isn't a single concept album out there that touches "Mindcrime". "The Wall" doesn't do a thing for meand "DSOTMoon" has not one tu ne on there that I like. For the intricate plot, the emotional swings, the depth of lyrics...everything--"Mindcrime" beats the crap out of the rest. I'm surprised no one has championed any Beatles' works.

Anyway, still waiting for DT to come back to Chicago. The Nov. 5 show was outstanding. I'd like to see them now that I'm so much more familiar with their work and history.

Hello all, Jeff =) asked what the mumbling at the beginning of the Intro to the Manhattan Center show from '94 (AKA AKIAD) was. As best I can tell, someone is mumbling "I want to wake up. In spite of this, it's all a dream." And then, thump thump thump thump, Jim Morrison screams "WAKE UP!" Of course we all know this to be from the "Celebration of the Lizard." "Wake up! - You can't remember where it was. - Has this dream stopped?" That portion of the poem, aside from being performed in the song "Celbration of the Lizard" is also featured on JM's posthumous poetry album "An American Prayer." The song in which it appears is called "Awake." Awake, by the way continues: "Awake - Shake dreams from your hair." What am I getting to? My question is this: which member of DT is a Doors fan? Could it be Mike Portnoy, since he has shown a taste for sixties music with his appreciation of the Beatles (ala Live In Tokyo vid.). How has this influenced the band, if at all? So much for me today.

Obscenities usually refer to some sexual or excretory processes. In the case of the 'F' word, it is an expletive and an obscenity, but not a profanity.

I don't think Y'Jammers need to apologize for including non-DT content, as long as it isn't too far afield.

Here's another plug for seeing the DT Unplugged disk before When Dream and James Unite. BTW, did anyone ever get a copy of the covers gig?

Actually I could wait forever before WD&JU - I'm quite satisifed with WD&DU just as it is. And besides you've heard my opinion on JLaB's style before... It's what I imagine having sex with a prostitute would be like - there may be great professional skill involved, but you know the orgasms are faked. (Fortunately, most guys can't tell the difference. <g>)

    Addressing some questions...

    Quoth Deebor:

    > [Crimson Glory] Does anyone know any other albums of theirs worth > getting?

Yeah - their self-titled debut CD is quite good. Nothing on it is QUITE as good as "In Dark Places" from _Transcendence_, but it's still worth the time and effort it might require to find a copy, unless you just want a dub...

    Quoth Jason Breitweg:

    > Has anyone heard Iced Earth? What do they sound like?<

Yes, and they sound much like the aforementioned Crimson Glory, although I like CG better. Your basic mystic/epic metal along the lines of Solitude AEturnus, Pretty Maids, etc.

    > Also everyone go buy Blind Guardian stuff!<

My Japanese penpal made me a tape with a bunch of their stuff; I don't know if it's all on the same CD or from different CDs. I thought they were pretty good, actually.

    Hi, I'm catching up!!!

First, I always considered the 1st album to be typical 80's progressive metal, I&W to be more fuisionesque power rock, and finally AWAKE to be simply progressive rock. Tough call which one's my fave though....I&W probably means the most to me since it was the album that made me discover DT (and rediscover metal in general!), but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's the best...hmmm.....I like Awake a lot, probably just as much as IAW, and I like most of WDADU a lot. With James that one would've been killer!!

    Second: my fave specific moments:

    * DT live in Stockholm, 1/4-93 starting off with metropolis, I had just discovered DT then, couldn't speak for a week.

    * "Once again we dance in the crowd..." - LTL * the keys-lead before the last "the way your heart..." - also LTL * the extended ending of the same song (live) with the harmonies and all the riffs at once.

    * the bass-intro to TOWHTSTS

    * the line in Don't Look Past Me: "If someone says my heart needs lifting don't ask how come ask how high"

    * and more....

    ---

Maybe DT will just pop over from Finland where they play the 22nd, yes, please, just one small gig, they could come to my house and borrow me and my brothers stuff...!!!

    /Mats

Hello everyone, it's Babs. I need to direct this note to Jason Breitweg.

    Jason,

I have tried to email you several times and it keeps "bouncing" back as being undeliverable. Please email me directly. I lost the address that you had emailed to me about a week ago (ok, so Babs has a flaw everyone - I'm careless, I admit it). So Jason, could you email me your address back ASAP?

    Thanks. -BABS

I agree totally!! I live in Omaha and would come down in a second. I also work for Marriott Hotels and could see if we could get a deal with one of the K.C. hotels on a meeting hall or something. I've tried to mail you before but it never went through. That's why I'm posting here. :P Write me if you want to try and get this going! BTW...like my suggested title? (check the subject) he he...

    Hello Jammerz!

I just recieved my copy of Dream Theater's Instrumental II and have to say that IT RULES!!!! I love it better than The first Instrumental album. Here's a rundown of the Tracklist with short comments:

    1. YYZ : I heroic cover of the Rush instrumental performed dangerously close to the speed of light.

    2. Metropolis - part I : Great even without vocals.

    3. Another Won : I have this with vocals on the Majesty demos and have to say I like it without vocals better.

    4. The farandole : I loved Talas and I worship Dream Theater, This cover is better that the orginal.

    5. A Change of Seasons : This kick-ass instrumental version is for those who dont want to hear the "F" word.

    6. Stars: Beautiful Composition. 'nuff said.

    7. Mission Impossible Theme : Same as on Subconsious. Still kicks butt. 8. Light Guitar Piece : JP Rules and it shows on this track.

    9. Long Island Sound : Rockin'

    10. Guitar Player Spotlight II I. Confessions of an Artist II. Somewhere Under the Rainbow : Sequel to the Instrumental I Spotlight. Jp is a versital god. the second section is the Wizard of oz tune embellished with grace and some new parts added. Love this composition.

In summary, this album is a must for die-hard collectors and Dream Theater fans alike. Later.

Regarding the new lyrics for ACOS that Brian Cox posted:

Can someone tell me if they removed that long instrumental section at around 13:30 on the old one? Please tell me they didn't, I really liked that (as well as the other long one, around 6:30). I just hope they didn't change the song TOO much, and I hope James actually sings most of it cleanly...

I also really liked the "all my dreams came true, all the world, and all of you" part, which it seems they removed (I don't know why, even if it didn't make sense, it just sounded good.

Of course, I'm just speculating here based on what I've heard others say about it - it's going to be a *LONG* wait until September/October or whenever DT come to Toronto.
