Flame me if you will, but i have a feeling that some of you have been
standing too close to the amps at all the concerts...
I can understand the bitching about the bass sound on WDADU, it's thin,
but it is there. But (at least on my stereo) on I&W and Awake, i hear a
nice full bass tone as well as the guitars and drums. it is more felt
than heard, but if you listen, it's there.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BTW-i'm thinking of ordering the japanese import of Awake with the bonus
CD. anyone out there know what's on this bonus CD to make the set worth
the $33 cdnow wants for it?
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
another BTW-i'd just like to say Fuck Yeah, Mike!!! to Mike Bahr for
going out of his way to bring us the Subconcious CD. Thanks a lot, man!
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
well, i've rambled enough for now.....

    Hi FW/DT Guru,

I hope you can forward this message below to the Fates Warning and Dream Theatre
lists. I only have access to read but not to send to them.
    *************************************************************************

104.3 FM in New York City plays some pretty good and sometimes some bad
heavy/hard Rock. I finally decided to call up and request some Fates
Warning, figuring that since they play Dream Theatre they should have
FW. Well I was wrong. Those bozos do not have any FW in the station!
Now that seems pretty crazy to me. I now have a bit of an idea why FW
has such a hard time with recognition and sales, not to many places play
    them.
If you folks out there think this is a problem call up the station and
let them know and/or request FW. Maybe they will do something like get
FW on their station. It would be a good thing.
I wish I knew the phone # off hand. Anyway, this is the biggest and
hottest Hard rock station and FW needs to be heard on this station.

    Peace,
    Jim Robinson

Well, I think you find with a lot of really artistic music in general that there is a lot of sublety and it takes longer to grow on you. It takes a little while to learn how to break out of the "instant gratification" mode when listening to music, but in the long run, those groups which you didn't care for at first are better in the long run and don't get boring like a lot of groups you loved on first listen. (The group that got me to understand "growing on you" was Jethro Tull, I couldn't stand tham at first, now I have the opposite feeling)

I think Echolyn's new album As the World is a great CD. It is taking prog in new directions, there are a lot of new musical ideas there (which may be easier for musicians to appreciate), but just give it some time. Even if you never end up liking it, it's important to learn how to listen to music with a more open mind, it will help you to discover great music in the future which you might have otherwise ignored!

Actually I rather like Sarah McLachlan. I'll also admit to listening to the latest Duran Duran album. I think I have some varied taste. I just don't like this Echolyn too much because I think its overblown. All the songs, to this non-musician, sound very similiar. I don't think the Sarah McLachlan album is mellow - emotional yes, mellow no. I'll agree that they have a 'unique' sound, it just doesn't work for me and I don't think I should be criticized for stating my opinion.

    >You see, all you heavy metal people out there must learn to appricate >music that does have the metal guitar all the way up in the mix! You must >first get the notion out of your minds that nonheavy music = bad (or >wimpy, as one Echolyn detractor put it.) You guys are looking for >something that isn't there, and isn't supposed to be there.

See above. I can live without a guitar I just think in this case it would add to my appreciation. Certain bands/artists can get away without a louder sound but I don't think Echolyn is one of them. I like Foreigner of old with the guitar and I think they work just as well on their latest where it is practically non-existant. I like orchestration and keyboards as well as anyone but I think Echolyn overdoes it. But thats their style I guess.

    >So what you must do is take your nonmetal CD (whatever that may be, >Echolyn, Megellan, Yes, etc.) and start playing it. Then you must pick >out some passages that sound semi-heavy. I can't get into music if I flat don't like it no matter how 'cool' it is or 'cool' it is supposed to sound. It doesn't make sense to listen to something because it is supposed to sound cool or made to sound cool. Like I said, I appreciate all sorts of music, DT, FW, King's X being my favs. And if I don't like the music then I don't really care what the lyrics are. No matter what point they are trying to get across or whatever. I can relate to almost all DT's stuff - I liked the 'sound' first then listened to the lyrics. I truly think that DT is innovative and I can't say the same about Echolyn. I'm sorry, I just flat don't like them.

    >And so ignor what this person said... don't listen to it first. Buy it, >and play it, and then play it again, and play it some more. And get the >thought out of your mind that the CD isn't metal. Then learn how cool CDs >can be even though they aren't metal.

Well, if you want my disc you can buy it from me for the $12 I paid for it. Maybe I have misinterpreted you but I don't appreciate your condescending tone. I'm sure you don't like music I like and I'm not going to put you down for your opinion. I'm sure there are others out there who don't care for Echolyn either.

Hey....I just thought I would let you in on a great DT experience. I was out skiing in the Sierra-Nevadas last week and decided to attatch my portable CD player to me....and it did not skip...unless I fell. Well...I brought along awake and decided to listen to the Man Beside Itself Triligy while heading down the mountain at the end of the day. Well...It was incredible to crank the best music up...feel the wind in your face...heading 6,000 feet down the mountain with a beatifull view of Lake Tohoe bellow. Well anyways it was an incredible experience made that much better by Dream Theater.

Also..about Lie. I never thought that much of it until recently..I like it a lot better. I think that the great jam at the end really makes the song.

    Hello Jammers,

I work for a college radio station and had the chance to check out Echolyn last night. Now I can give my informed opinion.

I love Echolyn!!! I find that they have influences in Jethro Tull, Rush and Marillion. I say this because, These are the bands that came to mind while listening to certain tracks. One of the Jammers on the list found the band boring, I can see where he might have been expecting something like DT or FW, They are not like these bands at all. Some of the Tracks I couldn't get into right away, but I'm sure They' will grow on me. So, If you like true progressive rock, check out Echolyn, if you're looking for another DT or FW, you won't find it here. Later,

I was listening to Metropolis, and I had images from a movie come into my mind (NO, Not the movie by the same name). See if this works for any of you people out there. I seemed to get images from the Disney movie "Tron". The whole atmosphere of the movie seems to be encompassed in the music of Metropolis. Again, I find little or no support for this in the lyrics, however, as I listen to some to some of the changes that occur (I am no musician, so I could not even guess at the musical terminology) I find certain scenes would match the new musical background. If a video were to be made, I think a great thing to do would be to edit some scenes from the movie into it.

Just trying to keep within A DT theme for a change. Take it easy, Brian

P.S. Oh yeah, as for non-DT theme: the person who thought NIN sucked, I am glad that you did not let the "suck' attitude disuade you from checking out more... GOOD JOB! (as for the "fixed" disk, it was a remixed version of the "Broken" cd, with an EXCELLENT version of Wish on it, everything else is a little, well, annoying)

HI , To all D.T fans ! If your in to progessive metal and rock then I would like to tell you about my band Jester.

To answer some of your questions : we are a progressive rock band with a blend of keys and guitars ,some of our songs are heavy but most are very melodic rock . The music does have alot of dynamics because of the feelings and messages in the songs. The vocals are high ,low and sometimes aggressive when need be, I'm the lead vocals in the band and I've had vocal training for 3 and 1/2 yrs. from the same vocal coach James (D.T) had in Toronto. I remember James when he was in a cover band in Canada called Winter Rose and he was taking lessons then. Our influences are Rush, Journey , Queensryche, D.T , and some of the proggressive bans from the 70's and 80's erra which do show up in our music. The type of music we play is hard to discribe but it has a positive message and it is proggessive rock our new material that we are writing has more of an edge more guitar dominant , still with keyboard melodies through-out. If you need more info then please e-mail me.

Just a quick to note to let anyone who's going to the London gig tomorrow know that if you can't make the meeting outside HMV at 3pm, we'll be picking up a few more UK jammers at Kentish Town tube station at 5pm.

    See ya there!

    Hi all.

I just thought that I would mention that I spoke with (actually e-mailed) the keyboard player for Echolyn. He said that he hasn't heard anything about them touring with DT. He said he thought that it would be cool though since they would be "audience compatible". I _was_ a bit disappointed when he told me that he (and the rest of the guys) didn't really like DT. He said that he didn't like their compositional style and songwriting. He also said that he thought that the singer (James) was "too aggressive and over-the-top".

He said he would be interested in hearing the Kev demos so I'm arranging to give him a copy. He seemed to be under the impression that Kev quit because he was mixed so low on Awake but I set him straight about that.

Oh, in the CD booklet, it doesn't contain the lyrics. You can email "echolyn@delphi.com" and they will tell you how to get them. You have to pay $3 + $2 for shipping and they send you a book (30 pages) with the lyrics (3,500 - thats why they didn't fit on the CD book) and it also includes so info about the band as well as each members thought on each song.

    See ya!

I've had a busy few days....I'm just getting back to reading the 'Jams.

    Non DT content -

Hairball is right. Mike Stone produced the Asia albums.

Hairball asked: > There's a song called Daylight that's on my copy of Alpha > (store-bought), that I've been told wasn't supposed to be on there. > Yes. Daylight was a bonus track offered only on the cassette. I just went out and bought Alpha on disc and it isn't on there.

Steve Chew asks: > Well, after two people mentioned that Greg Lake played with > Asia on "Alpha" I felt obliged to check my CDs to see if I was > misremembering things. The CD claims that it's John Wetton who played > and sang on "Alpha" (and "Asia") and it definitely sounds like his > voice to me. :) Greg Lake may have played on "Astra" -- I don't have > that one. Is anyone looking to sell their "Astra" CD? I haven't been > able to find it. > John Wetton was vocals and bass for both Asia's and Alpha's studio work. He quit during the tour. (I assume he and Steve Howe didn't get along.) Greg Lake only appeared on tour in support of Alpha. About time Astra was recorded, Lake left and Wetton came back. And Steve Howe was replaced by Mandy Meyers. There is an Asia concert video recorded from the Alpha tour. It is called Asia In Asia. It shows Lake on bass and vocals. (Yuck) Although Steve Howe's solo (later known as Sketches In The Sun) and Geoff Downes' setup was awesome! It was filmed in Tokyo and has MTV's Mark Goodman intro- ducing them. (Shows you how long ago THAT was... :D ) Until this weekend, I wasn't able to find Alpha on CD... Good luck in finding Astra.

    Now for the DT content:

Again, three cheers for Mike Bahr!

And who was the person giving Babs a hard time? I wanted to write out an I.O.U. to him, collectable at any time.... :D (just lighten up, that's all.)

    -------8<-------8<-------8<-----cut here----8<-------8<-------8<-------

    I. O. U. 1 (one) ass-whooping for giving my friend Babs a hard time after all of her hard work in this Ytsecon.

    -------8<-------8<-------8<-----cut here----8<-------8<-------8<-------

BTW, the question on EVERYBODY'S mind: When are they coming back and touring the US?!

    Dear jammers,

I finally got my fan club package! I totally did not expect to get it! I got a book of their history up to the European tour of 1995, biographies of the band, DT sticker, autograph picture (I'm not too sure if it's really a real autographed picture, but I can see some of the ink from the pens coming through to the back side of the picture), and a DT membership card. I was surprised to see that I got a relatively low member number, 00266. I'm sure that some of you out there have even lower numbers though. Well, I'm just glad that my money order wasn't lost in the mail or anything (about $80 for assorted DT stuff!). Well, this really made my day!

    Yours, Jeff =)

Hello Jammers, My band, Mass Illusion has interest in playing clubs along the east coast. If you are in any city such as Baltimore, Boston, New York, even in other states, and you know of clubs that allow all original music, perferably progressive, I would appreciate it if you could write me with the club name or names. Also, if you have any local magazines that have club advertisements and information about the local scene...an example in Philadelphia is the "Philly Rock Guide" and "Out on the Town", I would appreciate it if you could send them to me. I would happily pay for postage. Please write me with any information. Thank you greatly.

Hey everyone, I just wanted to let anyone sho tried to send me mail last week that I was on spring break and forgot to change to digest mode before leaving. My mailbox was flooded by Tuesday I think. This only affects people with whom I have trading agreements with right now. So you guys, I'm back and all trades arranged with me before March 3 are still on. I'm very backed up now because of this, so please bear with me. Any pertinent information can be sent to me now, since my account is cleaned up.

    Thanks, KAI
