I was wondering if anybody could post or (or mail to me) the track
listing of Yes' "Close to the Edge." Also, some guy in my dorm said that
it's actually a compilation album, made up of tracks from some of their
other studio albums. Is this true?

Well, the pre-gig meet in London went really well...NOT! I think we'd
better choose a more suitable meeting point next time. On reflection, the
front of the largest music store in the UK probably wasn't the best of
    places :)

Still, the show was incredible, even if I did have to leave twenty
minutes before the end to get my train. James said that they were now
going back to the states to 'hopefully do some recording'. ACOS, perhaps?

Many thanks to Peter and Andy for the Dance Of Eternity boot, I'll listen
to it when my hearing comes back <g> and, anyone who was supposed to pick
up a copy of Kevin's demos from me but missed me, please E-mail me with
your address(es) and I'll forward it on to you.

    Take care everyone,

    Mark.

I've noticed that too. When I finally caught the video (after hearing
all about it here first!!) I was just a bit disappointed with Lie as
well. Hearing it in the context of Awake makes a BIG difference.

Sure you don't want to change your mind?! I originally bought a 12" for the Daylight B-side. When I replaced my vinyl copy of Alpha with a CD, I found I do have Daylight on it! It's at home, so I can't check any details though.

I planned to, but I always forget titles, and there were a few that had to be mentioned, so I believe you are the first.

I missed the first to shows in Holland (sold out), but I saw them in Belgium instead. To everybody who missed the show in Nijmegen, let me put some salt in the wound (Dutch saying); You Really Missed Something !! Of the 4 DT concerts I saw, this was without any doubt #1 !

    > (again) a different set, with 'Innocenec Faded', which was not played > on the Euro tour before. Also they played 'Wait for sleep' acousticly!!. > John M. & John P. both acoustic, it was great.

Don't forget to mention a great version of Deep Purples 'Perfect Strangers'; the first time I heard them play a cover!

    > John Pettruci threw 2 picks into the audience, and I have both of them! > (hehe)

    So, you were that bastard that grabbed them just before I could :-} You must have been standing close to where I was. Strang, I didn't see ya :-}

    > The whole show lasted about 2 hours and 15 minutes. When they (finally) went ^^^^^^^^^ ?? Still much too soon !! > of stage Mike shouted into the mic "You fuckers RULE!". > > All in all a great night.

Not only Dream Theater was better than I ever saw or heard them, Fates Waring was wonderfull as well. And DT & FW seemed to be having a lot of fun as well; during 'Monument', FW's last song of the set, a roadie usually bringes an accoustic guitar on stage for one of the guitarists ( I don't know any of the FW guys by name ). This time, Mike Portnoy came on stage with an acc guitar on a stand, put it in front of the guitarist, and came back to pick up the guitar again when the accoustic piece was played. While going backstage he ran into the singer, pushed him back and didn't wanna let him pass. There was a small 'struggle' and the singer reached his mike laughing and too late!

And then there was The Silent Man, where Mike Portnoy comes to the front of the stage. Somewhere in that song, Mike makes a move with his arms to the drums and the bells rinkle (bad description in poor English, I know, but I suppose ya know what I'm talking about). Usually, a roadie takes care of this, but now the other FW guitarist was standing behind the the drum kit.

Welcome to the list, and yes, this reaction is a perfectly normal one, at least around here. If you can access the WWW you should check out the archives, look for the address in 'the Doc's' signature, it's hard to get a connection during American Business hours so try sometime in the mornings.

I think that Eddie is mostly a finger-player but he does use a pick for the beginning part of Jet City Woman, and also when I saw them live some weeks ago he actually used a pick on four or five songs. However the sound on PL does not sound as a pick to me. I think he used a Fender Precision Bass on PL mostly and that's why there's such a semi-distorted tone, not like the good-old Spector-days. Live he used several Ibanez's. I generally regard him as a finger-player.

Hiya guys and gals...more news 'n views etc. etc.

Yes indeed, as Mark said the pregig 'jammers meet was a rip-roaring disaster. Well, it was for me. At least Mark managed to find someone that gave him DoE...lucky git :) I put it down to the fact that no-one knew what anyone else looked like, and everyone was too concerned with getting to the Bull and Gate to down a few pints before the show. Next time we'll do it right!

Oh yeah..the show...What can I say but "fuckin' hey!" It was a bit good! I was quite impressed with Fates. I didn't know any of their stuff, except the chorus from Eye to Eye, but they did a reasonable job of getting the crowd in the mood, especially since on the whole, UK fans tend to be a bit unforgiving of support acts. Seeing as it was the last night of the tour, Mike Portnoy took great delight in running about in his white dressing gown. What was the name of the ghost again? Derek kept popping on stage to have a fag and watch the act as well. I noticed one of DT's roadies videoing the whole thing too, so keep an eye out for a new boot. As they finished the set, John Petrucci came and jammed with them on a few chords and they all got sprayed with silly string. Great fun :)

There was a short break while the equipment got sorted out and they played a really diverse range of music. Alice in Chains, some of the latest Yes stuff. I was pleasantly surprised.

DT hit the stage at about 9.20 after the usual Resevoir Dogs & "Wake up!" samples. They then went on to play 2 and a quarter hours of the most excellent music you could want from a night. The mix was spot on, IMO, and James' voice was sounding pretty good. The set list was as follows....

Pull Me Under 6.00 Innocence Faded outro Short jam type thing Take the Time Caught in a Web with drum solo Lifting Shadows off a Dream Accoustic/electric guitar solo with a bit of piano too Mirror with new intro Lie Surrounded Keyboards solos Erotomania Voices The Silent Man

First Encore: Cover that they did at the Ronnie Scotts gig, but I forget what it is. Anybody else know?

Second Encore: Metropolis with extra bits, Mike and John just didn't want to stop playing :)

The highlights for me were the short snippit of Innocence Faded, mainly coz I hadn't expected to hear it, and the Keyboard solos. No offence to Kevin, but I reckon Derek's a better player. The stuff he was doing left me stunned and intensely envious. He's managing to get these really good Kevinesque solos down now as well, so it's like having Kevin there but with extra bits. I never thought I'd see the entire front half of a concert pogoing to a keyboard solo but then "You never know what to expect with Dream Theater"

The last night atmosphere really made it as well. Fates came on and played the tinkly bells bit in the Silent Man, and then came back on stage with some beers at the end. Derek got some more acknowledgments as the new member and there was a bit of pissing about with towels and that. They just managed to convey this infectious sense of fun throughtout.

Lets hope they're going back to record ACOS. It sounds hopeful.

    Later,

    Matt

Hello everyone, it's BABS. When I see my name and ass-whooping in the same subject line it catches my attention (kinky, eh?). To coin a phrase from everybody's buddy Rodney King "Can't we all just get along?" There will be no ass-kicking, etc. We're like family, o.k.? We might snipe at each other, but that's as far as it goes. I'll admit it, we are a dysfunctionalfamily (but it works!, ha ha). I have to share with you the radio program I listened to this morning, they do little news skits on the OJ trial and they were playing the Hogan's Heros theme (it was absolutely cracking me up). I think that they should take that piece of music from the trial on CNN - you know the one I'm talking about that real classical one with the violins - and nominate it for a Grammy next year. It could fall under the category of BEST MUSICAL FOR A TRIAL. I know that this non DT content, but I am in an absolutely weird mood this morning, be thankful that it's not a PMS week. The end thing is a smiley. It was meant to be taken light heartedly. Again, I was not serious about the ass-whooping. Violence is not the answer to any situation. (besides you probably ARE capable of kicking my ass! :D ) I was going to email you privately but I figured that being that this was originally posted so that all could see, then the apology should be public as well. Unfortunately, written words do not convey tone inflection of the writer.

I have a good friend that works in a huge music store in Charlotte and they do a lot of distributing to big bands across the region. A few months ago I was hanging out at the store with him, and he asked me if I wanted to see something really cool. So I was like yea shure. We went into the shop and it was a brand new Ibanez custom that was made for john of DT. I was like woo, it was pretty cool to hold it, thinking about who the next player of the guitar was going to be. Just thought I would share that moment of glory with you guys.

I also called in one time to request "Monument", and the guy on the phone, who I believe was the engineer went "uh.....yeah, we got that we'll put it on as soon as we can" - needless to say, it didn't come on......

    > Now that seems pretty crazy to me. I now have a bit of an idea why FW > has such a hard time with recognition and sales, not to many places play > them.

This is why Fates hasn't got all the recognition that DT has - I remember someone a while back mentioning the fact that DT *has* to be a better band because of the fact that they sell more records, etc., but this goes to show how FW (and many other really talented bands get screwed over because of their label and the way their promotion people work....

BTW, I heard somewhere that FW (Aresti, I believe) said that it may be possible that they were going to go "in a different direction" style-wise, possibly due to the lack of sales or whatever when and IF another album comes out.l So it seems as though FW is once again possibly thinking of calling it quits.....:(

i preface this message with the warning that it is in ee cummings style <g> some of you already know this, but others don't: earlier this week, i broke my elbow... since my right arm is currently in a fiberglass half-cast, ace bandages, and a sling, i am temporarily unable to use it. so i am typing with only my left hand (shifting just isn't fun, and i don't want to YELL [CAPS LOCK ON] either :)

now that that's out of the way...

first, a piece of advice for novice traders... when mailing cassettes, please please please use *padded* envelopes. by not doing so, you risk damaging them. (believe me, i have many pen friends, and i've seen the damage that can happen to paper alone!)

secondly, i am now closing my northern ca dub site (i had planned to do this before my injury occurred, but, somehow, my original msg got lost in transit.) if i have already communicated with you about sending a dub (i.e. Tom, the Gregs), i fully intend to complete that request (i literally have a right-hand man currently, my hubby <g>) i feel that i've done my share in this project (20 or so Kev Moore tapes, and a dozen other dubs). i am still open to other trades, though (e-mail me privately please).

well, i'm off to take my thrice-daily motrin dose...

I still see some Marillion influence in Echolyn, It may be miniscule, but it's there. Compare passages from Echolyn's "The Cheese Stands Alone" to Marillions "Lords of the Backstage" from there Misplaced Childhood album. I hear an influence, even if they say that their isn't.

    Hi everyone!

It's Fred. I just got back from London. Yesterdays show was GREAT!!!! FW started at about eight. I'm not familiar with their music but they blew me away! I'm most definitely going to check out their albums! As this was the last show of the European tour DT had their fair share of fun with the them. Mike P was making appearances through out their set and they (FW) eventually got covered with silly string!

DT opened with PMU and the crowd was roaring. James hardly had to sing at all. John P had ballons attached to his guitar through the first couple of songs. The sound was quite good eventhough I had trouble hearing the bass at times. They did the jamming part of IF and them went into TTT. This is my favourite song so I just stood there smiling thinking "I'm in heaven". Derek had his solospot and it was excellent. They seem to have a lot of fun on stage. Being a guitarist I really looked forward to John P's solo. He did an acoustic piece on a nylon-string guitar. It was a chord-melody kind of thing which sounded a bit jazzy but also had elements of classical sounding progressions in it. He went on for quite a while and in the end it (IMHO) got a bit boring. I think he noticed that the crowd was losing interest and therefore switched to his Ibanez electric (the one with faces on it) and launched into a gut-wrenching ballad with Derek on keys. This was the best part of his solo. His phrasing reminded reminded me of David Gilmour. He also threw in some good-old blues licks as well as his own patented mixolydian stuff. Mmmm..excellent! I think the songlist was pretty much similar to their previous shows. I have to confess that I do not remember all of it. They didn't play anything from WDADU. Erotomania kicked ass though, a bit more aggressive than the recorded version. John P's string skipping section was a real showstopper (I hope you get to see it Will!). He really has a great sounding rig. He had 6 4*12 Rectifier cabs on stage. I was obvious what a difference the 7-stringed guitar made! It sounded VERY VERY heavy!! Furthermore they did 6 o'clock, Another day, a jazzy 12-bar blues, CAW, Lie, Voices, The Silent Man, Perfect Strangers as the first encore and then brought the proceedings to an end with Metropolis. I enjoyed this show even more than the one I saw in Stockholm two years ago. James sang like a god all night. I went back to my hotel as happy as can be. The only sad thing was that I didn't meet one single Ytse-jammer =(

    Ok that's it...

    /Fred

Right got my tape from Jenni this morning, and so straight to work...

Im situated in Surrey, England, so basically I happy to dub for anyone situated anywhere in the UK...

Simple situation of sending me a tape (at least TDK SA quality if you want a decent copy), plus equivalent return postage. Although if anyone wants to swap for _good_ quality bootlegs (tell me what you have) I'll happily do a straight trade that way too.

Should have about a weeks turn around on the tapes, as the best quality dubbing equipment i have is only available at the weekends...

    Email me...

    Dear all,

    Wow!, what a gig!!

For a start, I had only seen Fates Warning once on HB Ball and they were cool, but only one song (Eye to Eye ??) got played. Last night they were cool, and , get this, cos it was the last night on the European Tour D.T. kept pissing about (all taken in good humour) behind the amps and stuff, and at one point Mike Portnoy, ran about the stage with his 'new toy' which was some funny bit of percussion that went BOING!! They didn't spoil the songs though, it was just so good to see tons of really talented guys having such a laugh on stage and playing amazing music!

And then of course there was THE band!! They were absolutely perfect. Can't think how else to put it. The only thing that got me slightly annoyed about the whole night, was everyone making such a noise when Jon was doing his beautiful solo. He started with a nylon strung classical guitar, and as soon as he started playing people all around just started talking, THEN some dickhead shouts "Get on with it" which must have been bad for poor old Jon, I'm slightly biased cos I play guitar so maybe it was a bit indulgent, but the next funny thing is that when he switched to electric loads more people took interest, even though the style and phrasing etc of the piece didn't change for a while, but cos it looked more METAL to have an electric, people weren't as bored!! Makes me sick!! (Please tell me if this is really intolerant of me !!!!) I just shouted "Shut up you twat" fairly loud, which was probably not nice, but it did bug me slightly, and maybe I was tired cos I'd been right in the thick of Megadeth at Wolverhampton the night before!!! (They were good, but not D.T. good!!!!)

For all you that didn't go, it was interesting that they didn't play I.F. all the way through, just started at the cool chords before the jam at the end of the song, it was really good though and fitted well in the set. Derek's solo leading into Erotomania was amazing as well. I went with my twin who plays Keyboards, and my little bruv who plays Drums, he got a stick as well and kept trying to twirl it on the tube back to High Barnet station!!!

Yep, it was the best gig so far in my life !!!! And the long sleeve T-shirts were SO COOOOOOOL!!!!!

What did you other lot who were there think of it, or to put it another way , just how PERFECT was it for you!!!

from Rob Chinneck, a satisfied, very tired fan!!!

P.S. We didn't get home till 1:30, then I had to be up at 6:30 to get to Liverpool, to get back to Uni, after being Megadeth'd the night previous at Wolves, good, but very tiring !!!! Try this one at home kids!!!!
