Who was the good looking babe with the snapshot camera (seen talking to the
asian fellow with the video camera) ? Rowr!

Also, listening to Fates Warning's '(On the) Oustide Looking In', I definitely
have to buy their latest album. I stopped liking them after buying 'Night on
Brocken', 'No Exit' and 'Awaken The Guardian'. I thought the mixing/sound/
production were horrendous. Also I decided I didn't like the singer very much.
But that definitely changed last Wednesday! Whay!

Annd who the fuck were those two drunken twats who kept cussing John down while
he was doing that nylon solo? Wankers.

    Tor.

Too bad they didn't play anything from WDADU. I'd love to see them play 'Only
    a Matter of Time'.... *sigh*

    Well,

somehow that era could also been ended since "MTVs metal Hammer" with the famous Bailey Brothers was abandonned! Much better then Vanessa... However, I think that things just change and MTV allready has been sucking for a long time as they play more MTV-spots than videos and more HipHop-Videos like real music.... So why ya counting on MTV anyway? The music we are listening to stays cool and on a high level qualitywise, its just that we wont get informed about new & interesting stuff via MTV (which we are not for years now), but we have the Internet instead. There are tons of albums i want to check out because i read here about them....why should I crie a tear for MTV? Ok, the videos....but as things change there will for shure be a revival of metal videos in some months or years....

until then - stay tuned to DT, ytsejam, alt.music.progressive and so on.. Freak

Hello Jammers Please forgive me if I'm rehashing an old thread, but I just picked up DT's I&W Live In Tokyo video and I was wondering if anyone else thought that JP's guitar solo was the best they'd ever heard. I haven't had the opportunity to see DT live yet (I just moved to the real world after having escaped cultural isolation in Idaho) (no offense meant to anyone in Idaho, it's not your fault), but often, during other concerts I've been to, the guitarist takes ten minutes out and just senselessly noodles around. JP's solo on the video was melodic and tasteful while still showcasing his talent. I had to rewind it that instant and watch it all over again. He blows away so many other players that I thought were excelent before I discovered DT in '92 (I know they were around before that, but like I said, I was in Idaho). Does anyone know if or when they are coming back to Colorado on this tour? They are quickly replacing Queensryche as my favourite band! Again, sorry if this has all been discussed before.

Bracken (the Braxinator: "I'll be Brax!")

P.S. To the guy who thinks that DT is the worst band ever: fine. Don't listen to them. Our feelings won't be hurt. =)

Well, the edition of HBB (the European one, of course, since nowadays there's no such show on U.S. MTV, right?) with Mike Portnoy as guest VJ is being broadcast now, and they already showed the new video, "The Silent Man". I have to admit I'm not a big fan of that particular DT song (frankly I think it's one of their worst efforts), but the video was, imho, by far the best DT has ever come up with. As most of you probably know, Mike Portnoy himself directed it. There are familiar elements in the video, especially the old bearded man (looks a lot like that statue on the Awake cover), the mirror, which is identical to the one on the cover, and of course the clock. Also, the young face in the mirror is present. The video involves great use of colors and everything.. Considering my English skills and lack of time, I won't go about describing the video any further..

(BTW, MTV people had spelled DT "Dream Theatre" on the label thingamajig they put on all of the vids, I guess you know what I mean. Yikes!-I)

But, as I said, the video sure kicks ass, no matter what you think of the tune itself. And, GREAT NEWS!!! Mike announced that Dream Theater WILL record a new EP, featuring "the infamous 20-minute song, A Change of Seasons" as he himself put it on Headbanger's Ball :-) I can't wait to hear the studio version.. Will LTL finally be topped as the best song ever made? We'll see...

On a side note, they played Faith No More's new vid "Digging the Grave" after The Silent Man and it sounded good.. Maybe I'll buy the album tomorrow.

    Thanks Steffen!

Speaking of that audio shit, here's a few things:

    1) I was talking to Jim Gallagher (engineer extraordinare, my instructor, and someone I admire greatly) the other day, and he reminded me (regarding that string of posts...ya know...) that "you aren't actually hearing the 40hz tone on [that instrument I said I was done posting about] - you're hearing the RESONANT FREQUENCIES." Doh! Then again, I'm suprised none of you audio types called me on that little boo-boo.

    2) I bought a car stereo to replace the one that was stolen last saturday. This one's substantially louder. =) 25 watts a channel, with a BassXpander button (that gives a 10db kick up at 40hz! OUCH!). Well, you'll NEVER guess which tape I took in to listen to the stereos with. <grin> Both of the installation guys who looked at my car seemed to enjoy AWAKE (or what I played them). "Yeah, these guys are phenomenal! And ya know, you guys have this tape in stock in the CD/Tape Department..."

    3) Last night at a party that my g/f's friend had, I met this guy who was a Kansas freak. Guess who I pushed on him? (AWAKE and/or I&W make great X-mas & B-Day gifts, btw...)

    4) On a more personal note, I'm beginning to realize how limited I am in my recording capacities by my gear. This truly sucks, and I just thought I'd share my frustration with you all. Anyone who works at a studio where help is needed is welcome to drop me email. =)

    5) A few questions: a) What's the WWW address for DT? I keep forgetting to write it down because I don't have Mosiac...however, the geniuses at school just put a WWW program on the computer I use during one of my classes... =)

    b) Would that site take u/l's of my audio lectures? =) Seriously, I got a suprising amount of email requesting that I forward my posts, and I remembered a piece of text (well, it never seems to transfer correctly - ''s become U's, ect.) that I wrote regarding the music industry, and I figured someone out there might wanna see what some idiot like me had to say. Anyway, someone drop me email?

    Take it easy, all. -hairball

Yeah, I got my stuff finally, too. My # is 125 and I received a poster with my pack along with all the other good stuff. It was encouraging to read that: a. Mike records all DT on video and DAT (Possible release material) b. "Oh Holy Night" and other B-side tunes are slated for an EP release in the future. (Very nice) c. Derek is an official member of the band. (Congrats) d. The first newsletter will have an article about the Uncovered show. (Maybe some info about availability for us...cool)

    Later Jammers.

Here's a bunch of stuff I got to tell y'all. Got the latest Guitar Player because it said Dream Theater on the cover, but there was no article about them, just some article about prog music that mentioned them. I think it had about as much DT content as the ytsejam, just a quote from Petrucci "Even though we like technical stuff, we all enjoy Billy Joel and U2" or something. And they raised the price of the darn thing 45 cents since I last bought it. Dang it.

Since I mentioned lack of DT content...Here's what I think.

I do not at all think this list should be moderated or censored, but I think this can you give me the address of the Queensryche mailing list 100000 times is a little old. Why doesn't someone just post it and get it over with. I do like the discussion of other bands a little, but not a lot. The influx of info on recent DT shows has been GREAT! I would like to see the songs discussed a lot more, as well as get info on individual members of DT. I'd also like to hear less complaining. I haven't read the last two or three digests, but I browsed the headings and saw something called Dream Theater Sucks! I can't wait to see this person (who probably doesn't exist) beaten to a bloody pulp by a thousand people (heavy sarcasm). Ignore it and do something productive. I did much enjoy dream and nightmare bands, if you must know. I really enjoyed writing the two pieces I did on the songs, I'd like to see more and I'll do a few more myself. Thanks for listening. (people that type in all caps should be shot too).

In the vein of other bands, which I do like a little - maybe some of you other Christian music & DT fans would like Believer. They're about 400x heavier than DT and change a lot of time signatures, as well as featuring violins and opera singers.

When I return, I'll have more song stuff to share.

Hi DT-Fans! Just saw Headbangers Ball on european MTV featuring Mike Portnoy as VJ. It was great (well he was better than Vanessa Warwick of course). Mike was doin a lot of Beavis and Butthead impersinations (is that correct english?). And they substituted the tripple thrash treat by an tripple theater treat featuring some of DTs favorite bands: Machine Head, Galactic Cowboys and I Mother Earth. The best part of the show was the top 5 of reasons for buying the new DT Album AWAKE wich went something like this:

The TOP FIVE of reasons for buying the new DT-Album AWAKE

5 The CD featutes 75 minutes of music.Think of all that beer you can drink while listening to it. 4 John and I have beards like all the guys from your favourite grunge metal bands. 3 7 guitar strings is one better than 6. 2 6 bass strings are two better than 4.

And the number one reason for buying the new DT album AWAKE is:

1 Kerrang virtualy ignored the album so it must be good.

I think Mike could replace both, Vanessa Warwick and David Latterman :)

    bye,

    Tim Schwartz

Dunno how well the album has sold here in the States, but it was not in the Billboard Top 200 as of the last issue I leafed through.

They are probably in no danger of being dropped; I expect they do better overseas on a per-capita basis, anyway... :)
