Eh, well, each component of a band comes together to make a
complete sound. Heavy Metal, typically, has a loud, bassy bass tone. It
actually makes things sound heavier. Listen to the 1st Quiet Riot album.
Very loud, thick , uninvolved bass playing. It's there for fattening.

Now, with the case of a bassist like John, it's very difficult to
put those brightening frequencies without making it sound too thin, and
    inappropriate for the music.

If you've stood in the proximity of John's amp, you'll hear a
really thin, bright bass tone, with some low end rumble. =)

He'd like it to cut through, but still be punchy & thick at the
same time. That's difficult to achieve.

What you need to ask yourself is this: Would Chris Squire (tone &
all) fit into DT's sound? Probably not. Fits in fine with Yes.

    >If it's possible, do you feel the reason is because of a choice by Myung

Well, to be honest, I have no idea. My best guess is that it's a
bit of both. Usually, musicians are very picky about their tones, and
what a producer tries to do is to find something to accomdate that while
still keeping the big picture in mind.

I hope that answers your question...to summarize, I do think it's
possible, and AWAKE marks the best attempt yet to capture his tone. As
for a Chris Squire tone? Nah. Wouldn't work.
