I have two of their albums on vinyl, nothing on CD. Their albums (from
memory) were "Pampered Menial", "At the Sound of the Bell", and a live
album (that I never had or saw, but heard (through the net) existed).
It's been a long time since I heard either, but I think that I liked the
second album slightly more than the first. The vocalist reminds me of
Geddy Lee, but I found the albums enjoyable nonetheless ;)

The albums had a nice mid-late 70's sound to them. Some of the ballads
    are really nice.

Kerrang! also mentioned Pampered Menial (at least) in their Striktly for
    Konnoiseurs column many years ago...

    Hi everyone,

I just started doing my own radio show (actually it is broadcasted on the preview guide on cable TV) every Thur. night. It's loads of fun! The show has no format and I just jump from one style to the next. Every week I play Rush, FW, and INFERNO (shameless self promotion). It really freaks people out but I get some good calls as well. One minute i'm playing NIN and the next ELP. I do a lot of jazz and fusion stuff like Allan Holdsworth and John McLaughlin...

I don't stick to radio friendly songs (singles) such as 'Lie', 'TSM', or 'Surrounded' when I play DT. Last week I did 'Learning To Live' and this week i'll be playing live versions of 'Metropolis' and 'A Fortune In Lies.'

    It's fun...

It's obviously mean't to garner a response and if everyone rushes to defend Dream Theater it will make possibly little difference since the person posting the inflammatory message probably doesn't even subscribe to the list and probably is using one of those 10 hours free trial AOL accounts... so in other words:

Greetings Ytsejammers - Just wanted to say a quick hello, being that I'm new to the 'net and the mailing list. A few things:

    1. Does anybody know what the deal is with the Petrucci REH instructional video? Last I heard (from HIM, actually), it was due out sometime in February, and I've been checking the local music store daily. I was excited to find the tab to I&W, but it's still not enough. Any info. would be helpful.

    2. I have a handi-cammed recording of Petrucci's clinic at the National Guitar Summer Workshop last July. A lot of awesome tips and plenty of super-shredding - including the song "Barf Bag" which he talked about in his Guitar World column. Killer licks. If anyone wants a copy, especially since the REH video is M.I.A., let me know and we'll work something out.

    3. I've heard a lot about "Eve" but have no idea where I can find it - the import music scene sort of sucks around here. If anyone can help, please let me know. I'M DESPERATE!!!!!!!! |\ Chris | \ Caminiti |\ \ Faith | \ \ Hope ## \ | Love <ccamin1@zeus.towson.edu> ### \| ## | | ## ### ##

Hi! This is my first post to this list and I think I have big news for you (if no one has already told you): on 22/3/95 (i.e. tomorrow) Videomusic, the Italian music channel, will broadcast a DT live show (don't know which one, maybe the Milan or the Rome gig). Time is 22.00 C.E.T., i.e. 16.00 in New York, if I'm not wrong. So call any relative you have in Italy and tell'em to record this show. Unfortunately I can't receive that channel clearly, so I won't videorecord it. But told my friend to.

PROBLEM: although this info comes directly from the DT Italian fanclub, and though I saw on VideoMusic VideoText "Dream Theater concert" on their Wednesday program list, yesterday I saw a publicity announcing a different artist (can't remember the name) for 22/3/95. Who knows? Hope it will be DT ...

I just got the single for _The Silent Man_. It is very cool. IMHO, the cover isn't as good as the _Lie_ cover, but I havn't seen the video, which would appear to have some connection. _Eve_ isn't what I expected, but it is a very good song. The TTT demo hasn't stuck out as incredibly enlightening or anything, but it is cool to have. BTW- Who plays keyboards on _Eve_? Was it recorded along with Awake and therefore had Kev on the keys? Or is it newer, with Derek? The Lie single says that Kev plays on _To Live Forever_ (which I have lyrics to, for anyone who cares- my transcription, but so far, no one has disagreed) but _The Silent Man_ single doesnt say anything.

    >I am relatively new to the list - so let me know if this has been >discussed a million and two times - but concerning Metropolis, anyone >out there familiar with the book and movie by the same name? It was a >silent film, then in the 70's someone tinted it (not colorized) and >added a metal soundtrack with bands I can't remmebr now. I think Queen >was involved. Anyway - the themes in the book and movie seem like they >could be the inspiration for some of Metropolis by DT - is this old hat >to you all?

This has been brought up, but if I remember correctly, the movie and the song are unrelated. I don't know anything about the metal soundtrack or anything, but Queen purchased parts for the it for... ummm... I CANT REMEMBER! I have no idea why, but I don't remember. The song might be _Radio Ga Ga_, and is definatly from that era of Queen.

To conclude, Kevin Moore's stuff is INCREDIBLE. I am not into industrial-ish music at all, and while this isn't that industrial, it is alot different than my other music, and I LOVE IT! I will write a review, like someone asked, to be sent to Kev, if this is still possible. _Roll Away The Stone_ is on now. _Blanket (I Buried Me Wife And I Dance On Top Of Her)_ and _Sun Orange Small_ are probably my favorites... although I feel bad not mentioning _Song For Eric_...

C'mon Mike, don't lump us all in with that moron who obviously has no taste, and as it's been pointed out by several of you guys, WAY too much time on his hands. 11 days and counting... till you get the blanks, at least :)

I've been a lurker for a while now, just enjoying the conversation, comments and incredible amounts of great information on an amazing band!

I, too, am one of the _unfortunates_ who don't have access to the Internet except via a service like AOL. It's a shame that we've had two (or possibly the same dink using different aliases) postings who's only purpose was to inflame the rest of us. I guess they get off on it---whatever. Can't you just see them carefully tracking down every band's mailing list and sending out a similar note while chuckling with glee? Dude, are you happy now that someone's paying attention to ya?

Anyway, I just wanted to come out of hiding long enough to say that not all of us AOL'ers are complete idiots.

To cut a long story short...GET THEM! The CD single comes as a two part set, something that is becoming more and more frequent over here in the UK, no doubt to give the single an extra week of life amongst the crap that passes for music in the British charts. Each CD contains three live tracks taken from the Astoria show back in October last year. CD1 has Damaged, The Killing Words and The Lady Wore Black, CD2 has Silent Lucidity, My Empty Room and Real World.

The production on the live tracks is superb and there's some lovely work from the band including a cool re-working of My Empty Room which neatly segues into Real World. Prices are GBP 1.99 for each CD (3$).

Can anyone believe that he LOWERED the price of the cd!??! Most would raise it whether they go the blanks for a lower price or not, just because people would get it anyhow. And 90% of people would leave the price alone if they got the cds for a lower price. But NO, he lowers it. I accidentally deleted the lyrics for to live for ever and was wondering if the person who posted them could send them to me or tell me where they are at. I would like to add the lyrics for the Lie and Silent Man singles to my web page. Thank you.

One other thing. I have a question about scanning legalities. I recently purchased Lords of Sound and was wondering if it is legal to scan the covers for my web page. The reason I'm unsure is that i havent seen anyone else do it and wanted to make sure before i did it. Thanks again.

#1. <applause> to "Pull My Finger" - anybody object if I print that in issue 8?? It's too good to pass up! And on that topic, I'm going to start putting that issue together fairly soon; if anyone else wants to contribute or order it, email me! This is a DT fanzine, the ONLY friggin' US DT zine, and the operative syllable is FAN! Contributions are ALWAYS desired!

#2. a comment made by Mike Bahr: >...moron friends sitting there singing along to Pearl Scam...<

I object to this; I was listening to Pearl Jam BEFORE "Alive" was ever even released as a video! I was not particularly impressed by the new CD, but I do believe they have their merits. The bandwagon fans are another story <and totally piss me off, too> I much prefer prog/power metal to the large majority of alternative/grunge/sponge/ska, but I refuse to confine myself to such.

    #3. >can anybody beat #185?<

Yup - I'm #133. Only seen one person on the list with a smaller number, Qghost was probably waiting about as long as I was! <sixteen months!> It remains to be seen if the fan club will live up to its promises. BTW, for those who have been asking, the CORRECT fan club address is in the Awake CD book, the Midtown Station address. It changed about twice more after the one in CT closed. <I still have an order form for that one>

I was just at a local boot shop and found a DT boot titles Wake Up! Any body know anything about this. Its from the latest tour with a lot of stuff from Awake on it. One distinguishing feature is one of the tracks is J Myung birthday song! I didn't get it because they wanted $51.00 for it and I'm not laying out that kind of money for something I know nothing about (quality wise anyway). So, if anyone has any info on this boot and its quality, I'd appreciate it.

I would like to express my gratitude to all you 'jammers for discussing so much new music on this list and (for the most part ) not being DT bigots! Thanks to this list I have discovered all kinds of new bands that I wouldn't have found on my own. Granted, not all have been what I expected but the good suggestions have balanced out the bad. Also, the discussion on this list has rekindled interest in some old favorites (Rush, Kansas, etc) and prompted me to round out my collection. So, thanks to all!!!!

And finally, I'd like to give a big F**K YEAH to Mike Bahr for his work on the SUBCONCIOUS CD. I don't know about everyone else but I am REALLY EXCITED about this CD! I can't wait to get my hands on it!!!! It will be my first "boot" type CD ever (maybe thats why I'm so excited?) (Nah, its cause its previously unheard music from my favorite band). So, thanks Mike.

Ummm... yes. That solo has so much to it, it is far more than just one repeated lick. Too bad it doesn't have a name...

Something I forgot to say earlier... I found GTR's _GTR_ used for $7. IMHO it is an incredible album.

Are they going to include the bass parts too (I hope)? If so, will it be seperate books or a combo bass/guitar book like the Chili Peppers put out?

Does anyone have Live at the Marquee? Is it available? I have WDADU. I got it when DT first came out. I never picked up I&W but Awake is awesome!! I still love the (real) first album and Live has a couple tune from it. I haven't seen them live. Did they do anything from WDADU? Thanks

Thanks! I really appreciate the deluge of commentary on this.. makes a fella feel worthwhile. :)

And 90% of people would leave the price > alone if they got the cds for a lower price. But NO, he lowers it. Just

Yep, and also, I wanted it to be clear to DT management (if they had been watching... let's hope not) that this was a non-profit effort... and thus, if I get a break, I'd pass it on, in the name of fandom. I hope the small price break eased all your wallets a bit. :)

10 DAYS AND COUNTING till I get the blanks shipment... that means 12 days till the first few CDs are in the hands of Jammers. I want reviews! When you get the CD,hyperanalyze it like a Rush album cover, and tell the world what ya think!! :)
