I just purchased the Live in Tokyo video, I have not had the time
to watch much yet, but a few things stand out. First: James'
performance seems, well,... off. I don't know, but it just does
not sound right. Mind you, I have only seen about 15 mintues of the
thing (the first song only), but it just does not sound too impressive.
Now for the GOOD stuff, The GTR solo was Great. I have not seen
such a display since I saw Richie Blackmore with Deep Purple, It
was VERY impressive. I look forward to seeing more.

    Now for the NON-DT stuff:
I went out last weekend and bought some disks that I have seen mentioned
here on the ytsejam; Echolyn and Magellan. As for Echolyn, I am not
really attracted much to it (I got 'As the World'). While I think the
overall performance is flawless, the band's style was not what I was hoping
for (But then, that is what I expected, to hear something totally new to
me). Anyway, I will give it a few more listens (to be fair, I only listened
to it once so far, so we'll see).
As for Magellan, this is more along the lines that I like, a little
more electricity, a little more volume, and a lot more keyboards.
When I hear them I can't help thinking of YES (no flames please, I DO
see the difference, they just REMIND me of Yes). I haven't heard
this more than once yet either, but I already sense that this is more my
    cup-o-tea.
Echolyn seems, if I can coin a term, RE-gressive (no flames, this is not a
put down, let me explain...). I mean they seem to have an old-style
flavor. A little folksy. Like a cross between 'CSN' and Pre-ELO 'The
Move'. So their music seems a little simpler (not musically, but
simple with regard to the overall SOUND). Magellan, well I like the sound,
but I keep thinking when I listen to them that it is a bit over the top
with the keys, maybe even gimmicky. These are my FIRST impressions,
please understand, I am not putting either band down, or even sticking by
what I am saying YET, I have to hear more, and maybe some comments
from you afficianados of the bands will guide me, or maybe my views will
    solidify. We'll see.

Sorry for the length and NON-DT stuff, but I heard about these bands here,
so it seems that I might not be TOO far from a valid topic. PLus,
as I have stated on another mail list, these other bands ARE relevant
to the central band, they are all peers, and we can all grow in our
musical preferances if we just Take the Time to explore. And who better
to get guidance from than people who like the same bands!!

    later,
    Brian

Good afternoon everyone, it's Babs. Just wanted to let everyone know that I received a phone call from management about our convention. The top brass met yesterday and they want to do it. It has to be in early June, because they would like to get them (DT) back on the road in July. NEWS FOR THE LONG ISLANDERS: It looks like we will have to move it further into Long Island (i.e. Smithtown) - the Uniondale Marriott is booked to the hilt. Sorry. The Smithtown location will probably work better for anyone flying into Long Island, it is minutes from the McArthur Airport. I have a lot of further details to work out and will keep you posted. Also, their management made me promise that I cannot do anything concrete until they give me the word to do so (I think that it's just because they are men and want to be boss) - ha ha. HERE'S WHAT I NEED FROM WHO EVER WANTS TO ATTEND: 1) exact number of people coming, email address and also a telephone number (I will resort to the telephone only if I cannot make contact with you via email). I realize that a lot of you are at college and after May you might not have internet access. Well I will be talking to you all later. -BABS

I'l have to whole-heartedly agree. Though a guitarist at heart, I can't seem to resist the urge to crank out the drum part on my steering wheel and anything else that might get in my way (i.e.- dashboard, gas pedal, brake pedal, small dogs, various passers-by...). Anyhow, it doesn't look as cool when you are playing air-guitar in the car. Air drums pretty much rule in any auto-environment. Steve Vai's new disc is called "Alien Love Secrets". It's actually a seven song instrumental EP. My first impression is that it's not nearly as polished as "Passion and Warfare" but it's pretty good stuff although a bit weird at times.

Just in respnse to the jammer who posted about driving while listening to Metropolis: The first time I heard Pull Me Under-Live <from LatM>, I was driving, and I started pounding on the steering wheel, the windows, the dash and anything else within reach until I actually bruised my knuckles for the rest of the day. When the song ended, I realized I was doing 75 in a 50 zone. The live Killing Hand has the same effect on me, esp. at the end when James starts wailing. If you listen to A Fortune In Lies, when the bass, guitar and drums do the military-sounding, highly syncopated part, one's foot will involuntarily depress the accelerator to its limit.

    Dear jammers,

    >>>Hello everyone, it's Babs. Before I fell asleep last night I was brain-storming convention ideas and then this popped into my head. Now that the DT guys are back in the states do you think that they are checking out our posts? I suppose that I should address this to Ken Bibb. Are the Gods watching us? <<<

They've _been_ watching us. I don't know how long, but they've been reading the digests even on tour, because someone gives them printouts.

Now, the Ytsejam Convention. I haven't seen it yet, but I'm sure that Babs has already posted a message about it. I just got off the phone with Rena and John and I told them the news about the Convention, where it will be, and when. Everyone will be there, because John can't go anywhere without Rena (ac cording to her ;)

Anyways, John said that DT will begin the tour sometime in July. So, they won't be touring or anything in June, which is when the convention is. Cool? I'd REALLY like to thank Babs for doing all of the calling, the waiting (well, we all waited with her), the organizing, the research, and everything!! She's terrific!!

I've been working on tabbing out some DT (Only a Matter of Time & To Live Forever (Live)) & Magellan; not anywhere close to being done, but I had an idea...

Before anyone posts their tab for the whole world to see, why don't we let 2-4 other guitarists check it out with suggestions and corrections. I'm thinking of some of the TAB for DT posted on the net. Some of them are very good, but with a handful of guitarists analyzing them, we could get _very_ close to actual. My primary interest is in DT TAB. With both I&W and Awake being put out, we could concentrate on WDADU and live songs and get them _near_ 100% accurate. What do you guitarists think? The new Steve Vai EP (yes, it IS an EP, not a full album) was supposed to be released on Tuesday the 21st. However I didn't get a chance to find out if it was actually out. Tower Record's release schedule for March didn't have Vai's "Alien Love Secrets". ALS is all instrumental like P&W, so we are all spared the terrible vocals from S&R. According to reviews, Vai did some serious shredding on tones like Juices, and even does another one of his trademark voice mimicking where he used his guitar to imitate his kid's voice.

I once heard someone say this about Vai:

'You know, I used to have a lot of respect for Steve Vai as a musician, until I heard Zappa's music and realized it had all been done before.'

    That's a general paraphrase, btw.

Just something to think about. I can see where he's coming from, i.e. listen to Zappa's "Jazz Discharge Party Hats" for a voice transcription as mentioned by Eddie above. I don't know that I agree totally, but I do see it a bit.

    Dear jammers,

Forgive me if you didn't want this on the list, but I think this is very important.

Sorry for the non-DT content! -----------

I've sampled a song from the 'Damn The Machine'-album so if anyone would like to check that out just open the following URL:

    http://www.nada.kth.se/~d94-mry

and look somewhere on that page. It sounds decent with SoundMachine on a Macintosh but it should work out on most machines.

----------- Sorry for the non-DT content!

(I just think they're a great band that most DT-fans should be able to appreciate!)

HERE'S WHAT I NEED FROM WHO EVER WANTS TO ATTEND: 1) exact number of people coming,

Well, I am responding here for myself and two other ytsejammers who have since had problems with their accounts and had to unsubscribe to the list. Speaking for the three of us, then, there would be a total of five people attending. Either way, none of us will be *staying* at the hotel overnight or anything, since we all live about a half and hour/45 minutes away in Jersey.

    2) email address

My E-mail address: balkiewi@njmsa.umdnj.edu The other two also have E-mail addresses, I'll post them here, but since I speak with them almost on a daily basis, any info. can just be sent to my address.

The other two addresses are : amenegat@menger.eecs.stevens-tech.edu and bvd100@psu.edu

    3) a telephone number (I will resort to the telephone only if I cannot make contact with you via email).

    My phone number - (201) - 450-0187

If there's any important info., I can readily contact the other two, as above.

There ya go, BABS, keep up the great work,

    Al Balkiewicz vocals, Half NAked
