I just joined the mailing list about a few weeks ago and have basically
been reading the postings, this is my first post. I am amazed by the
loyal fan base DT has. I just have one question, I have been hearing a lot
about Kevin Moores solo material and people have been saying that it is
different than anything he has ever done. I dont know if this topic has been
talked to death but i was wondering if someone could describe his new material
to me and tell me what its like and if he plans on releasing an album. Thanks
    in advance for any info.

    WAIT!!!

I just wanted to post to the list to ask you all NOT to flame
Dave (the one from aol who dosen't like me _or_ my Subconscious project).

Dave, I'm sorry for the flame I did post already, it was posted
in the heat of indignation, and now I'd rather I had said nothing.

For those of you who are wondering what this is all about... Dave
made a post in which he leveled rather harsh criticism and insult toward
me and the CD project. I suspected (correctly, as I have read) that since
most of the Jam has sent for the CD, most of them would feel the need to
answer back to Dave. Please, I would really rather you did not.

I know that the insults were at me, and I do disagree with the
content of his posting, but I would rather let them go unchallenged and
let him be satisfied for now, thus, the thread should quickly die. I
_don't want to start any controversy_ over the Sub CDs. I'd rather have
him cutting me down than have the project go down the tubes, especially
considering the enormous time investment I have already put into it.

I hope that when the time comes, the CD will speak for itself, as
far as quality and so forth. Since I have a very touchy "gentleman's nod
of agreement" that the band will overlook this fan effort and let it
happen, I'd rather not go around pissing anyone off.

Dave, I don't know what I did to you to set you against me, but
I'm sorry. If you're dissatisfied with my way of going about this
project, then you're welcome to not buy a CD, and to recommend that your
friends do the same... just like you would with any product. I've clearly
marked the header in my mail about the CD with the word "Subconscious"
every time, so you can delete that mail at your convenience and not have
to read it through. I ask only that you keep the signal:noise ratio on
the Jam as low as possible, and email me personally if you don't like me
or what I am doing. I will always answer private email, and that way, we
won't have a flame war on the Jam.

For the rest of you.. please leave Dave alone. I appreciate the
sentiment in those of you who are defending my side of things, but I'd
rather lose the argument than lose the CD project to controversy.

Well, I have to wonder about all the doomsday stuff. I mean, if the bill is
passed, it's unenforcable. But beyond that, it'll immediately be challenged in
the courts, probably by (of all companies) Microsoft (others too, of course...
AOL, Prodigy, Delphi, etc). The point is, it really doesn't matter what the
"anti-government" republicans do to create more government ( :^) ), they really
aren't powerfull enough to shut everything down.

I'll personally send 1000 "FUCK YOU" messages to Newt Grinch and every other
mental midget who voted for it.... I'd love to see them put me in jail for it.
"Oh, the muderers can go free, we need to punish these free-speaking computer

Now there's a crime bill you can believe in. :^)

Gee, looks like Clinton might be re-elected after all...

Yes... so far, Echolyn is the only band who has used a full string
section on a CD that I've heard. (And this is a 95 CD, I'd expect to
    strings on a 70s CD, but 95... cool. :))

But they're definetly cool. They seem to be excellent all around, a group
much like Dream Theater (they're drummer is almost as crazy as Portnoy
and has the technique of Zonder.) Also they're vocal section is top notch.

I see a big influence from Gentle Giant, another really great band and
one of my favorites. They seem to be like Gentle Giant, only faster. And
from what I've heard, they pull it off live just as well as GG does.
However they have a much more classical style than GG and their lyrics
seem to be a little better on the whole. But don't take me wrong, they
may have a sound similar to GG, but they are totally different band with
a style that I haven't seen in a band before, whether its from 95 or 75.

oh, yeah, also so keyboard solos almost seem Firth of Fifth-ish to me,
especially "Prose." I guess Tony Banks is another influence on them.

Yes... I feel exatly the same way. The first few tracks hold my attention
for a while, but on the whole I like Echolyn much much more.

    That'd be a great concert!

He was on Mike Oldfield's "Islands" along with a lot of other guests.

I think he was in the group "Bronze", although that may have been the drummer.

I have the video bootleg version of the Milan show (7 march 1995). Probably nobody also filmed the Rome show (6 march 1995), I don't know guys who film shows in Rome (btw rarely bands play Rome...). That's all, sorry :( bye Alf

This sounds all too familiar to me! My husband is a drummer. (You AOL'ers probably know this story because I mentioned it way back during that "My First DT" thread.) Being a drummer, he literally plays *anything*. Once in a while, he plays his car - the dashboard, steering wheel, windows... He started by just pounding, but he now uses actual drumsticks. And bass drumming, well, use your imagination! Needless to say, when the urge strikes him, Dream Theater and Fates Warning are his favorite bands to drum along with. Maybe when we get our dream house, the one with the sound proofed room, this odd habit will discontinue... In the meantime, he plays the kitchen sink (literally), his car, the cat...

    Hey!

I've always wondered a thing about Metropolis, the original version on Images and Words. If you listen closely (in fact you don't have to listen that closely) you'll notice that when the kick-drum enters at the beginning of the song, the first kick is a lot weaker than the other ones.

Since DT is Holy Gods [tm] they just don't fuck up such a simple thing, so I was just wondering: what's the deal with that first kick? Is it supposed to be that way because it sounds good? (I don't think it sounds good!) Are there other reasons?

A similar thing: on Get A Grip by Aerosmith, the instrumental second-last track, there's a huge error bass-wise at the end. I trust Tom Hamilton to be able to deliver three consecutive minutes of fretless bass, at least when recording so that was probably intentionally.

After GTR, Max appeared on 2 Mike Oldfield albums- "Earth Moving" and "Islands"- He sang 2 songs on EARTH, and 1 song on ISLANDS. The songg from ISLANDS is "Magic Touch" which was almost kinda a semi-single in the states and even had a video. Max wasn't in it though.
