I just recieved a great DT boot from their current tour. It was
recorded in Houston, Tx at the Tower Theatre on 11/14/94. I'm sure a lot
of you have already got a copy of this, but I'm new to this boot thing,
and if anyone has any boots they are willing to trade for a copy of this,
e-mail me with a list of your boots. Thanks.

O.K., if aliens landed in _my_ backyard and I had only 30-45 sec of DT to
offer them, I have it narrowed down to 2 choices:

    In LtL:
the part that begins with "Listening to the city..."

    also in LtL:
the part immediately following that begins with "Another chance to lift my
            life..."

It seems that a lot of people are choosing an _instrumental_ passage, and
while I understand that 75% of DT's music is instrumental, I'm afraid that our
extra-terrestrial jammers will not see the whole picture if a little bit of
James is not thrown in to the mix. Having said that, a close runner-up in my
book would be the beginning of the fadeout in Scarred.

    Hello all,
I saw someone (sorry, I can't remember who) in Ytsejam Digest #802
mention Ronnie James Dio and his short time with Black Sabbath three
years ago, and he actually said that he thought Sabbath was at their best
when RJD was with them. HELLO?? WHAT??!! I understand that you have
your opinion and I respect that, but I don't think any self-respecting
Sabbath fan would say such a thing! All the great shit they did in the
seventies that influenced so many great bands today and then, and you
find Dehumanizer to be their best? Let's not forget that Ozzy was the
CORE of Black Sabbath. Whew... Once again, I understand that this is
your opinion, and I've come to the conclusion that you're much more of a
Dio fan than a Sabbath fan, so your opinon makes some kind of sense if
that's the case (but just a little... :). I just felt it necessary to
defend the days when Sabbath was Sabbath and VEHEMENTLY disagree... :) Of
course, I'm also about as far from a RJD fan as you can get...

    Hello all,
Just a couple things I felt like mentioning:
It has been commented on that Awake is a much more live-sounding Dream
Theater recording than anything they've done before and I agree. I had
heard this even before I got the album (I was not one of you lucky people
who got an advance copy... :), so one of the first things I noticed was
the picture of the band in the studio, all in the same room. I think
    this method of recording had a lot to do with the album sounding so live;
as you recall from LiT, they recorded I&W in seperate rooms (a common
practice) and the result lacked the dynamic live sound of Awake. Some of
you may also recall that Metallica recorded Metallica in the same way
(all in the same room) at the suggestion of Bob Rock, and the effect was
the same. I don't know if all this has been brought up before (I've been
on the list since October and I don't remember seeing anything), I just
    thought it was worth comment.
The second part of this deals with Portnoy; has anyone else noticed
(like I'm the only one... :) that he seems to have the heaviest
influences of all the guys in the group? We know he's a
Kansas/Rush/Genesis/Yes fan, but examine some other facts:

     1) Part of his drum solo on the I&W tour was from Pantera's "By Demons
        Be Driven".
     2) Part of his drum solo on the Awake tour was from Slayer's "Reign in
Blood" (a favorite drum bit to sample, it seems; quite a few drummers
have opted to include this legendary drum tidbit in their solos
including Lars Ulrich and Charlie Benante).
     3) Mike is the only one in the band to have seen Napalm Death live and
was subsequently the reason for the 'infamous t-shirt' James wore in
        the PMU video.
     4) When he appeared on Headbanger's Ball in October, he was wearing a
        Machine Head t-shirt.

Just thought that was kind of interesting.

Okay, so my post wasn't all that chock-full of neato-rific
interesting stuff...I haven't posted in awhile and there WAS DT content!
    :)

    >Nypsie

You know, I was thinking that DT without Moore would kind of be lacking, but
after finally getting the Japanese pay-per-view (thanks Allan) and getting to
hear Derek Sherinian play, Derek is pretty damn good and I think he's a good
choice for a replacement. He nailed most of the instrumental sections (except
for the *ahem* _sax_ solo on "Another Day") and his playing during the
improvosational sections on some of the songs was also very tasteful. But I
guess that DT was really without Moore during the _Awake_ sessions because he's
nowhere near as present on it as he was with I&W - none of the cool
guitar/keyboard solos, etc., that made him stand out on I&W. Now that I've
seen that Derek can mimic Moore, we'll just have to wait and see if he can
    write as well, too.

Now, as far as LaBrie goes, someone said that his voice doesn't crack as much
if he's not moving around a lot. Well, his voice cracks quite often on the
pay-per-view, and after the first couple of songs he doesn't move around at
all. I first got into DT because of the drumming, but I really began to worship
them because of LaBrie's singing. Now that I've finally gotten to see them
live (second-hand, I know, but they never come to North Carolina) I was *sort
of* disappointed. I wasn't really bummed or anything, but I figured that if
you're going to be singing to a nation-wide audience that you'd really try to
hit those notes solid. The problem is - I think he _was_ trying to hit those
notes solid. He just couldn't. During his warm-up before the show he went flat
in a few spots. So maybe there's something to the theory that he's a one-shot
studio jockey. Listen to the section in "Voices" that goes "...sex is death,
death is sex...." That's the way he sings live for songs that he sang in a
much clearer tone for I&W. I know he really has to work his voice for a show,
especially if it's his upteenth show in a month, so I can let it slide. I do
believe that musicians should challenge themselves (and DT definitely does
that!), but if they can't pull it off live, they shouldn't do it at all.

Gotta agree with you here. Mike Portnoy is what got me into the band. I first
heard DT on the radio when I&W came out. I heard PMU one time and then I
picked up I&W the very next day. I usually don't do spur of the moment things
like that when I hear a song I dig is on the radio. I think I did the right
    thing in this case :).

I accidentaly made it sound like the I&W TAB book contained the bass parts. What I meant was that the Awake tab book contained no bass parts just like the I&W tab book contained no bass parts. I just didn't want to be redundant.

Oh, I also forgot to give the ISBN number of the book. Anybody need that, let me know.

I'm sorry, but I just don't hear it. The progression at 2:38 of "Erotomania" is ascending. The chords go up by one note four times, then jump to a different progression. The progression from "IF" at 2:11 not only is descending, but after four chords it repeats the same thing. These two progressions are not the same, nor are they similar to my ears. (This is easier if you've learned the songs, 'cause during the time you are learning, your fingers remember certain chords and patterns and you go, "wait, this is just like that other song...")

Your guess is as good as mine. So can I assume that James does this song live on "Dance of Eternity?" It would be good to have another source to listen to, to decipher this stuff that no one seems able to enunciate. (did someone say Charlie over-enunciated and James under-enunciated? Something tells me if Charlie sang ACOS, we'd understand every word.)

    >Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Is your copy of the Vocalist >tapes like this? Is Subcon like this?

Actually, "To Live Forever" done by John Hendricks and Steve Stone are at the same speed as James'. All three, from the vocalist audition tape, are played at the same speed by the rest of the band. And John Hendricks sounds exactly like all the other John Hendricks stuff I've heard. When James finishes singing, Kevin Moore says, "This just in from Baghdad. Seven patriot missiles have been spotted above Cuba." It sounds just like Kevin, same deep voice.

I heard "To Live Forever" from the "Lie" single before I heard it on the vocalist audition tapes. I wondered why they played it so fast on the auditions, or why they slowed it down so much for the "Lie" single, because they were at very different speeds... Do you suppose James might have asked them to slow it down back at that audition? I mean, they did do it acoustically...

To me James' voice is altogether higher on "I&W" than on "Awake." He even said in an interview that it was a conscious change in vocal style when they were recording "Awake." I figure those auditions were at least a year before the recording of "I&W," so it wouldn't surprise me if his vocal style had changed somewhat from 1991 to 1994. Lastly, I didn't really find James' voice to be that much higher on the audition than how it was on "I&W."

Hey all, Please forgive me for the lack of DT content. I'm very excited about the QR show in Denver on the 9th. Speaking of which, I have backstage passes. I am just wondering if anyone has a burning question they've always wanted to ask someone in QR. Its not that I'm a suck conversationalist (as a philosophy student I'm just loaded with deep meaningful questions like how many angels can dance on the head of a pin* etc...?), I just thought that since I have the chance to meet them I might give you all a chance to have your own curious natures satisfied as well. So much for my altruistic intentions. Hey I'm no Mike Bahr! Anyhow, I won't mind if you send your questions direct to me in the interests of not clogging up the Ytsejam with non-DT related material. I'll post anything of interest that the other Gods (QR is still my favorite band despite the fact that DT is steadily overcoming them with every listen).

Then again, you might just as well ask how many demons can dance on the head of a pin. They're of the same original stock after all. And at least they dance. How about most of the instrumental at the end of Innocence Faded? Possibly the best short jam they've done. Maybye the intro to LFAGA (you can throw away the rest of the song :)

He seemed quite sincere, but I would still advise everyone to keep an eye on him. :)

    Evenin' folks!

Rob Chinneck asked about the I&W Tab book. The singer in our band picked up a copy in London a few days ago, so I guess it's still available in Britain. Admittedly the book is now sitting in our flat where it gets opened, glared at, sworn at, glared at again, sworn at violently (as my flatmate - our guitarist - put it, Petrucci is a GIT...in the nicest possible sense! :) ) and then we all get on our knees and offer praise to the gods of prog. And no, I'm not starting the DT are/aren't p(P)rogressive thread again.

Give me a chance to find the address and phone no. of the place and I'll post it soon. Our Singer found it in Chappell's of Bond Street. Now where did I put that phone book?....

    >On Ayn Rand. Thanks for all clarifications on my Sig posting from Atlas >Shrugged & Anthem. I just thought it was an interesting quote. There >appear to be a lot of INTELLIGENT people/good musicians on the Ystejam >board.

On Dio, he did vocals on 2 tracks on Kerry Livgren's first solo LP/tape/CD?, which was called 'Seeds of Change' (Mask of the Great Deceiver & Rising of the Son (or something similar, I don't have the listing in front of me)). He is a good vocalist.

Another point, What is progressive musis/Or? WHere do you draw the line. IMHO, one 'factor' is the use of Words & Images (DT content) to create both musical and imaginative(lyrical) imagery rather than the stuff you get with industrial pop sh_t. I don't ordinarily use public expletives, but pop deserves it. If I'd have to guess many Yjammers' taste in 'classical' art and music, I think there would be many who prefer the works of the Impressionists (Renoir, Degas, Van Gogh; Ravel, Debussy, Satie), since IMHO Progressive Music is the Impressionist art of today. Also, an empirical observation, with apologies to the guitar gods, a lot of Progressive music uses/shares alot of lead parts with keyboards.

    >Also someone mentioned earlier that DT did a cover of 'Perfect Strangers' >(the Deep Purple piece?) Where does Purple fit in the Progressive skeme? >Although most would label them as hard rock/early metal, a lot of their >stuff borders on progressive (with guitar god Richie Blackmore, aka >Rainbow w/Dio). Also a group like Uriah Heep (once included John Wetton, >later, King Crimson, UK, Asia). Conversely, drummer Cozy Powell (Black >Sabbath) played the 'P' of ELP on the 'Welcome Back' album. A lot of the >good metal bands contain Progressive-like musicianship (the present >Metallica lead ax studied with guitar god Joe Satriani) Any takers? Maybe >more later; I've thought about this relationship between progressive and >metal quite a bit.

    YO.

I just saw the Japan PPV vid last night <thanks to J Hartman>, and I must say that I've never heard James sound WORSE. Even when he was warming up in the dressing room he was cracking like a cheap champagne flute at a Kiri Te Kanawa concert. It was just awful. Not only James, but the bass just had way too much definition. Every time he started doing his signature John Myung licks his stings were slapping against the pickups so much that it actually did sound like someone stirring a big ole pot of spaghetti. That part of the show was bearable, though. It just made me wish that James went back to his I&W singing style--totally clean. I know its not _all_ his fault; DT never mixes the vocals high enough in the mix. Maybe their monitors suck or something. But I do know that if he would just quit putting that RASP in his voice, he would last a lot longer. He always talks about "his opera coach"; well, I wonder what she would say if she heard him singing like that. Just listen to Learning To Live or Innocence Faded--that's where he sings his highest notes, and he sounds _phenomenal_. In a way I hope The Gods are watching and he reads our grievances and takes note. I dont want DT to have TWO new members on their next album because another on burned out.

If you get a chance, go see Van Halen on their current tour. I saw them last night in Buffalo and the show was fantastic, but, Mr. Edward Van Halen had a fairly noticable limp while trying to move around on stage. Show lasted 2 hours with 1 encore of 3 songs and a 2nd encore of 1 song. Can't wait for Subconscious #80, pre-thanks Mike, post thanks to follow.
