First off, I thought I'd mention the Subconscious CD. Mike, this is a
fine piece of work. Thanks again! I got it about a week ago and I now I
can't get the best parts out of my head. A Change Of Seasons is truly
impressive. Did we say Portnoy wrote this? It sure has some nice moments:
    get him to do more! (Also, I'd like to get the definitive lyrics on this;
guess I'll have to wait for the EP to come out). It's also nice to see
how DT put a new twist in some old songs (Mission: Impossible rocks!, and
Tears is truly beautiful). There are only two I don't like: Wanted Dead
Or Alive doesn't really do it for me (it gets annoying after a while) and
Winter, while good, sounds strained (the male voice wasn't made for such
high notes, just as my voice wasn't made for Suite Sister Mary,
    unfortunately).

While we're at it, thanks to all of you who recommended Tori Amos. Little
Earthquakes made a fine addition to my collection, and I always find
myself going back to it. I find I like this list better when it goes
beyond simple Dream Theaterism (or Petruccianity, or whatever the
religion will eventually be named. Who shall be Pope?)

Might as well do my part, actually. Got the latest album from The Tea
Party recently (it's called "The Edges of Twilight") and I've grown
rather fond of it. It's reminiscent of the Doors (down to a lookalike
singer) and Led Zeppelin (when they were experimenting with foreign
rythms and sounds), but has its own identity nonetheless. It has good
musicianship, lyrics tasting of mysticism, nature and (of course) love
both lost and found, and it rocks. I'm told that their previous album is
better, though, if somewhat more mellow.

Lastly, is there any chance of DT coming back to Canada on this tour?
To my knowledge they only did Toronto so far. At least for Images and
Words they went to Montreal also. How many other Canadians are there on
this list anyway (apart from Mike Keast, with whom I need to have a word
soon)? The band doesn't seem to have too many fans around here,
    unfortunately.

Well, that's enough for now. Back to lurking for a while. Take it easy!

    Eric

Hello, everyone! No rap comments here...However, I do have a question that
is not DT-related. Does anyone have any info regarding the Fates (probably
boot) release "Through Different Eyes?" It was recorded live in 89 in
Philadelphia. Before I pay 30 bucks, I wanna know the scoop!

    Discs on the changer:

Helloween - Pink Bubbles Go Ape
    Van Halen - Balance
    Anacrusis - Screams and Whispers
    Soundgarden - Superunknown

I am an original fan. I actually have WDADU on cassette from when it first
came out... Are any of you guys from Maryland the one who at the infamous
rain shower show (Pier Six) tapped me on the shoulder and said, "You
actually know this stuff??" when they played the tunes from WDADU?? Just
    wondering...

Are these going to be the UK dates that someone else (I forget who) mentioned a while ago? Does anyone know if DT are just mini-touring the UK or will they be in Europe as well? As soon as anyone has info, please post it!

After excitement, rain, postponement, letdown... I finally arrived at the Promised Land. (Concert, that is! <g>)

You probably all know that I'm talking about Queensryche - and wondering what it has to do with Dream Theater. Well, there's a bit of relevance...

At the show, Keith and I met up with fellow Ytsejammer Zach (and company). (That's the great thing about Ytsejam clothing - makes it easy to track down other 'Jammers!) Although it was a little difficult to talk about Type O, it was nice to chat for a while. (Did you ever find Bob??)

I was amazed at the number of Dream Theater concert tees at the show (personally, I think they outnumbered Van Halen!) Needless to say, you can't see a DT shirt and not comment - and we got some comments as well for our own attire. <g> Additionally, you may see some of these compatriots pop up on Ytsejam in the future. (Yes, the Jen and Keith PR machine in motion! <g>)

What I'm wondering is how common is the DT shirt phenomenon? I honestly didn't expect to see so many! Yet it was a *pleasant* surprise. :)

Needless to say, the show was AWESOME!

I know the guys (James, John P., John M., Mike, and Derek) are surely capable of it... but would the band ever do as visual a show as 'Ryche? That would be topping perfection, eh? I mean, they have lyrically complex music that flows from song to song and thread to thread; they just need the images to fit the words. :)

I would have to agree with Andy... I mean, should I apologize for sometimes being one of those people that answers the new guys' questions? Well, you can forget it! We should welcome new listeners into the fold with open arms; we're all new at one point. I have certainly done my share (and continue to do so) in promoting Ytsejam. And I've seen a lot of 'Jam regular posters pop up in that particular newsgroup...

Oh, and, Andy, I'm glad you liked the art analogy. <g>

Hi you german/(french?) jammers! As Tim already mentioned, it seems as there will be at least one concert with DT as headliners in germany !! This concert will take place on 6/28/95 here in the Kulturfabrik, Saarbruecken, Germany. This isn't really a concert hall, it's more like a local techno temple, not too big (1500 people, I guess, so perhaps there is a good chance to meet the band!!). I don`t even know if there's a support act, probably a local band. It seems as if the guys (or should I say gods, Rob? ;-) don't want to spend their free time between their "Rock over germany" gigs to boring sightseeing trips ;-) Ticket sales will start next week. As this concert seems to be their only headlining appearance in Europe yet (Any other dates, german jammerz?) and is not part of a tour or something (you could call it a "special gig", perhaps a result of the great resonance they got from german DT fans (Hallo to all of them!), I don't know if there are Tickets available outside the Saarland. So, if you are interested in tickets, email me privately and I will give you the info you need to get your ticket. (Jason, perhaps you can make the 600 km from Hamburg?)

    So long, see you there!

    Tilman. tiku@rz.uni-sb.de

P.S.: I just picked up the debut CD of an excellent italian, DTish prog metal band called "Evil Wings". Really weird, extreme fast breaks and instrumental parts (reminds me of early german "Sieges Even"), but also songs with a lot of emotion and cool keys. Check em out!!

Hmm, an official drink... well it needs to be complex to reflect DT's musical style, it needs to be smooth, it's got to be "Balls and Chunk" none of this fruity flavored stuff,....hmmm.... How about a nice dark ale or stout, it's definately balls and chunk, smooth but slightly bitter, and the complexity is in the precise brewing of the hops and roasting of the Barley..... I am getting thirsty already...

If I remember correctly, after the last show with IME Mike was doing shots of Yeagermister (sp?), I am not sure if that is his favorite drink however... nor would I recommend this drink... I wouldn't want to have to drink it.

Well, let's see...up until recently, my main axe was a Kubicki Factor 4-string (with that ever-so-useful string extender). It was, however, traded in to consummate what I *still* believe to be a steal of a deal...a 6-string Alembic Spoiler for a cool $1000. Yes, I'm still reeling from that one...anyway, that bass is BEAUTIFUL in every sense of the word...not to mention I can now play (or at least attempt) John's lines without feeling a dearth of notes and strings.

I also own (and play) a blond Rickenbacker 4003 (another fine instrument), and an Ibanez Roadstar which has been converted into a fruitless...er...fretless.

All this equipment goes through a Boss ME-6B bass effects processor into a Hartke 7000 head and out of a Hartke 4 x 10 cabinet.

I had the "Flaming Heart wrapped in barbed wire" scanned as a bitmap and I have that bouncing around the screen as an After Dark Logo module. It looks really sharp. Sometimes I switch it to the Majesty Logo.

Oh, no - not again. People, this post has gone around the net thousands of times even though it is a hoax. Craig Shergold has recieved over a quarter of a million get-well cards from around the world, as he wanted, but the thing is: he's better now and does not want any more cards. Yes, they thought he was terminal, but he recovered and is now living happily in England somewhere. But he still recieved thousands of cards a month, none of which he wants. Not only that but it is overloading the local mail service. If any of you sent this to friends, PLEASE tell them not to send Craig any more cards. He has more than enough. -Jason

PS: Yes, this does rank up there with the "make money fast" posts.

Hello everyone, it's BABS. OK a fellow ytsejammer and I have come up with the Official Dream Theater Drink of the 1995 YTSE Convention:

It will be called the Ytseslam (giggle). What I need from you guys (and that's every ytsejammer far and wide) are some ideas of what to put into this drink!

Also, is there anyone out there coming to the convention that has a small and portable sound system so that we can have some tunes? Let me know! Also, I just finished reading the contract over with the Sheraton and they forbid the use of a bubble machine. Doesn't that absolutely crack you all up? Like we were gonna have Mike P sitting there will a drum kit and bubbles. I'm sorry everyone, but I found that absolutely hysterical. I suppose that we can thank Lawrence Welk for that silly-ass rule (giggle).

    Talk to you soon! -BABS

Okay, since it's been something of a topic of discussion on the 'jam, here are the four big guitarists--each excellent in their own right--that have studied with Joe Satriani:

    1) Steve Vai 2) Kirk Hammett (Metallica) 3) Larry Lalonde (Primus) 4) Alex Skolnik (formerly of Testament)

They'll get around to it, I'm sure, Jay. The idea that Crimson was going to play at Chez Dave was started as a rumour anyway, I think.

    Ah well.

This is my first day back to work in about a week and all the Jams I have to catch up on are unbelievable. Any-hoo, this past weekend was Victoria Day weekend (or more commonly known as May two-four weekend) up here in Canada. I had just picked up all my food and four cases of beer for the weekend to go camping on Friday morning, and was getting ready to load my tent and clothes in car. All of a sudden I saw the mailman leaving my building so I decided to check the mail one last time and there it was, Subconscious, waiting to be played :) Luckily I have a CD player in my car and the trip to the woods was made in no-time flat. When the rest of my friends arrived, Subcon was playing and they all asked who it was. I told them DT, which they had become familiar with over the past couple of years from my consistent playing. Incidentally, we all play organized ball-hockey of which I named our team Blue Murder (after the band). They are now avid BM & DT fans because of me. I still hope the James rumor of guesting with BM is true? Back to my point, with the quite surroundings of the woods, wildlife and campfire, and the exception of my Alpine blasting out DT for most of the weekend, this has to be the ultimate DT experience. The only thing that would have been better of course would be to have the woods, wildlife, campfire, and DT with acoustics in hand around the fire:) Thank you very much Mike Bahr for helping make this first camping weekend a memorable one. I have yet to actually sit down by myself to listen to Subcon. P.S. The nearby lake in which we went swimming was a balmy 50F 8) ,but with four cases of beer to work on it wasn't that cold. I wore my long sleeve DT shirt and my friend wore his YtseJam Shirt. We too were surprised at the number of DT shirts and got many comments on ours, people that were DT fans had no trouble walking uo and talking to us about DT...

hey! so that's why is sounds so different! im totally ignorant about electric guitars so i had no idea about single coils and multiple coils , etc... but i knew that the intro to Metropolis sounds a lot diffferent live then on I&W ... thanks dude!

    Re: equipment i use

well, im going to jump on this one...im a keyboard player, remember?? ( i do have an acoustic, but dont play much) ....

i use a * Casio CZ-3000 Casio PMP-400 (really cheap...it justs runs my module) * Roland Sound Canvas 55 (great for the $400) Korg O1/w pro (76 keys) Peavey amps

    * these are the things i have at school...the rest belongs to my dad :(

the Korg is the best machine of the bunch and i think that kevin moore uses one too

    that's it for now!

Boy, guitarists love to brag, don't they? Enough! Well, after me that is...

    I own a:

'81 Fender Precision (American) Rock maple body and fretboard EMG P & J pickups (It's not a Prec. Special; the guy I bought it from crudely routed the J in!) All brass hardware, including BA bridge Was candy apple red; now stripped and crudely varnished (again, before I bought it). Varnish on fret board wearing off on E-string, frets A# through F. Drummer dropped it and broke it in half. Stayed in tune. Taped it back together with duct tape and played the same night. Permanently glued it back together with Elmer's Carpenter's Glue(TM).

It sounds like a million bucks! Wouldn't trade it for anything.

Not included on this list is Jeff Tyson (T-Ride). He is also a great player, but unlike most of the others, he focuses more on rhythm than soloing (in fact 'T-Ride' has no traditional guitar solos on it).
