    This is to Chris Crowder...

    Chris,

I don't agree with you at all. LTL is not their best, I admit
it's great, but Metroplis Part 1 blows all others away!! The song doesn't
start out with cool time signatures like LTL, but throughout the entire
song it just builds...going from one level of greatness to another. 1st
it starts off on a pretty basic level which is OK. Then when the vocals
enter it goes from OK to gettin' better (the next level). By the time it
reaches the middle instrumental peice (which has a better chord
progression and better time signatures than LTL) the song has gone from
gettin' better to pretty damn cool. By the the vocals start in again in
the resolution everything has just gotten to purely awsomeand it ends
that way. It's not until you read the lyrics that it come to the
greatness level. LTL does that but it doesn't do it quite well.
Question... is there going to be a Metroplis part duex!!!

    hello there fellow jammers...

well i was wondering what other drummers here on the jam think about Mike's
overdubbing of drum fills etc....you can hear them on metropolis (hmm i shoulda
got the time), ACOS (around 2:22 where hes riding the high hats like crazy then
you hear a tom roll over it....) , and in other little places here and there....
i think its pretty cool, adds alot of neat things to the song..they are hard to
notice..but i decided to lay my guitar down the other day and hop on the throne
of my cheap no name double kick kit, while jamming along with some songs i
    noticed them.....
but i guess guitarists overdub alot too :)

    take care kiddos,
    Joe

    Hello Jammers:

Just thought I'd toss out a couple of ideas I've been thinking
about lately. The first one is: When DT plays Ytse Jam live, I have
noticed that at the end of the drum solo, mike always finishes it with a
flurry of notes around the toms, and then strikes an open Hi-hat just
before the band comes in. (A cue, maybe?) On the Live in Tokyo video that
I have, Portnoy can be seen clicking together his sticks a split second
before the band comes in to finish off the song. I thought that this
little bit of communication and unity of the band was amazing. On some
bootlegs, you can hear the sticks before the band comes in, too. These
    guys are amazing!
Does anyone out there know about a compilation CD with the Pull
Me Under (edit) on it? I know it exists, I saw it once, but I can't
    remember the title.

Does anyone have or know where I could find either of these two
    bootlegs? :

`Images and Tour' and `Mission: Impossible'. Please email me
    directly. Thank you.

It's funny that you brought it up. This was just covered on the TV show
called C|net Central. The guy told the same story that you just did and
said that it is a hoax. He called the store and they said that they
would never charge for the recipes. He said this story has been floating
around on the net for quite a while now (years?). He even made a batch
of the cookies and said that they weren't that good anyway. :)

    Ting-ti-ding Ting-ti-ding .... Anybody know what song that's from ??? (A really REALLY easy one =)

Okie..Someone asked about shows where Fates Warning was opening for DT (can't remember who). One was here in Finland (can't remem- ber when either =P). Sometime spring =). Well...As I hadn't heard of FW before it took me awhile to assimilate it. And since I was biting my nails to see DT FOR THE FIRST TIME ! I didn't get an exact picture. But anyways they made a pretty good impression, but IM(sometimes even honest)O they sounded ...well... lamer. OKEYOKEYOKEY !!! Hold the flamers! They were a GOOD opening act. Actually one of the best I've heard. But since DT was GREAT!! it kinda took something away from FW. And if anyone's interested it was the show where Derek was announced as being part of the band. Since I still can't remember when that was, it has actually no informational value =) The show was in Tavastia, which is a club type joint. I've had my best concerts there, for it's relatively small. As in Y.Malm.. show it took only about five minutes of elbowwork to get right before the stage =). Petrucci playing his solos 1.5m from your nose is a sight worth seeing !!

Okey..so what if this is abit long. Nobody's gonna this far any- ways!

GREAT ! Then I can say ******** and get away with it too =)

just got my ad #183/ thank you mike bahr.

    here's what i think:

another day- actually i didn't like it at all. was that really james?? just sounded weird. lifting shadows- brilliant. that was amazing. wfs- pretty good, but i like how they did it live. john's guitar playing that high melody just doesn't seem to fit. silent man- good. much like the original lie- i wish they had given it a real ending, but nice jam. tears- don't remember the original version, but it sounds fine to me. o holy night- where the other tunes sound awesome, i didn't like the quality of this one as much (but that's ok). at 1:50 there's this lick john does that reminds of a guitar lick in "brown-eyed girl." anyone catch it? whoa...calm down james! is he exploding or something? perfect strangers- i love derek's distorted tone at the start. wow. this is really heavy! wow...bruce....woo-hoo!!!! is this from ronnie scott's?? in a weird way, this song reminds me of "suicide solution." don't ask why, because i'll just say "desenex." it would have awesome to hear bruce and james duet. 6:00- i already miss the drum intro. the keys sound like derek's live. i miss the samples (singing them in my head where they go). bass distorted. but man, that guitar is POUNDING!!! i love that. who's playing keys on this? it also seems faster. it also sounds like LIVE!!! wow. ciaw- are these really demos?? curious.... i love that key melody before the last verse. james actually sounds good on this and 6. portnoy's drums are killing me. he's a fierce bastard. voices- i wish those guys would shut up (in the background). nice whistle at the end. bad- dt and u2. the audience really pisses me off. was this the mulcahy's gig? that is shameful. petrucci sounds like the edge. it's good when you can hear them. if i were playing and this audience was being rude, i get up and leave. really. this is so bad (the audience, i mean). i mean they sound awesome, & it's like "who cares?" "wide awake" sounds beautiful.....good work

wfs transcription- haven't looked at it yet. i am debating something else as well. a) should i include or exclude markings for dynamics? there are what appear to be some clear dynamics in the original, but i am of the opinion that dynamics and phrasing should be left to the performer. i would like some opinions on this. also, b) how the hell am i gonna send this out to interested parties. it is 6 pages about- that's a lot of manila envelopes. we shall see.

Cool. I've read through that book. I didn't exactly read through the whole thing, but I did read some of it. And, of course, I looked at the pictures. <G> It's a cool book if you want to excercise your mind while NOT listening to Dream Theater.

Now, for the next victim: > Would people please STOP the NIN discussion? Last I checked this was a Dream > Theater list. Furthermore, there's a (very active) alt.music.nin newsgroup, > take this crap there!

I don't see anything wrong with COMPARING Dream Theater to NIN. After all, there's still Dream Theater content.

    > I think NIN suck. I don't want to read about them. I don't want to read > that they suck either. And don't bother replying to that comment, because no > matter what you say, I'll still think they suck, period. I don't want > to read anything about them at all. I want to read about Dream Theater.

Yeah, dude. huh huh huh They suck.

Seriously, I don't like NIN all that much, either, but I wouldn't say they SUCK. That's a little extreme. I like a few of the songs released as singles (Head Like a Hole, March of the Pigs, Closer, Hurt). But that's beside the point. I like Dream Theater a LOT more. > Come on people, if you're going to talk about other bands that's fine, but > at LEAST discuss prog-rock/metal bands, bands that many YtseJammers > might be interested in knowing about (for example, IVANHOE). And if you must

Well, I WOULD like to know more about Ivanhoe. All I've seen about them is, "Oh God, they're such a cool band! They sound just like Dream Theater! Check out their Web page, man!" That's all great, but I don't have wen access. Does Ivanhoe have an FTP site where I can d/l the .WAV files from?

    > talk about NIN, I wish people would at least stick to USELESS information, > and not start arguments about them just for the hell of this.

Useless information like what? Like when you said you thought NIN sucked? > (Say, didn't we just go through all this, err... last week with BM?!?)

Not quite. That was a little different. Most people were bashing Blind Melon and were making fun of Hoon's death. Most of that was uncalled for. However, a comparison between BM's music and lyrics to Dream Theater's would be just fine. I LIKE the new subject and I simply cannot see why some people don't think it's appropriate for this mailing list. After all, there IS Dream Theater content.

I see this list as more than just people to post about Dream Theater. It's a place where people who like Dream Theater (from all over the world, no less) can get together and talk about Dream Theater, their other favorite prog-rock bands, other bands they like (and why and if they have any connection to Dream Theater). I understand that the digests are coming in at warp speed and many people are backed up. Hell, I'm backed up on digests, but I DO take the time (pun certainly intended) to at least skim them all. If I see a post I have no interest in, I skip it. Some posts are kinda long (like the interp of Voices), so I didn't read it, but I saved it so I can read it later.

I have some suggestions for the list:

What we need to see LESS of:

    1) People trying to subscribe 2) Comlaints about the size of the digests and lack of DT content with no real soluton (note: This post offers a solution). 3) Bashing other bands (i.e. Blind Lemon should die / NIN sucks) 4) Posts to Mike Bahr about the bootlegs ON THE LIST. I only posted one thing to him on the list because I hadn't received a response from an E-mail I sent him. There ARE exceptions. 5) Less flaming and getting offended over the slightest little thing. If you ARE offended by a post, take it to E-mail and discuss it with that person. 6) Respond to Polls in E-MAIL. Yes, I responded to the Top 5 band thing on the list, but I didn't know it was a poll. I never saw the original post, just where other people were listng their top 5 favorite bands.

I know Ken Bibb addressed a lot of this. I just thought it needed to be said AGAIN.

What I'd like to see MORE of:

    1) What other bands do you like? I actually LIKED the Top 5 favorite non-DT bands thread. As I suggested earlier, though it would be better to also not include other obvious bands like Queensrche and Rush. I'm sure that the top 5 favorite bands on this list are:

    1) Dream Theater 2) Rush 3) Queensryche 4) Fates Warning 5) Not, sure but I'd say Pink Floyd, Marillion, Yes, maybe even Savatage.

What we need to hear about are OTHER bands that don't get so much recognition. Tells us about the other bands you like, why you like them, and how much like Dream Theater are they (for a good basis of comparison). One example of this is how much Ivanhoe has been pushed. I really want to hear them, so please post all the info you can about them. Also, thanks to Jodi posting her top-5 favorite non-DT bands, she's introducing me to Mind Funk and Galactic Cowboys. I think thast if ANY thread can spark a good E-mail conversation, then it's worth being posted.

    2) More humor and wit. I think Bafu Vai and Mike Bahr do a great job of it. I especially like Mike's "hidden" messages within his mass of Dream Theater content. It keeps me interested in what he has to say. It also helps to put smilies or <G> after your message so people KNOW you're joking. With electronic media, you can't see facial expressions or hear tones of voice. you can only tell by the words. You'll notice I use <G> a lot. That's because I like to make witty remarks from time to time and I want you to KNOW that they are witty remarks.

    3) Comparison to other bands. This sort of goes with #1, but the NIN thread prompted this. NIN DOES get a lot of recognition, but the type of music being played, as well as the tone of the lyrics is different from Dream Theater's. It would do little good to compare DT to other well-known prog-rock bands like Rush and Queensryche other than to make allusions here and there. But I think comparing DT to a band like NIN makes for a VERY interesting thread. I wouldn't mind seeing comparisons between DT and other non-prog bands.

    4) Magic discussion...no...wait....nevermind. There's already a mailing list for that (several, in fact). <G> <-- see? Take note.

    5) Um, I can't think of a #5 other than more DT content. Of course if you think something needs commenting on and you think it can benifit other subscribers, then post it, by all means. For example, I posted earlier in this LONG message about Godel, Escher, Bach. If I just wanted to tell the original poster that I read the book, then I would have E-mailed him. BUT, I also thought that I should recommend that DT fans take a look at the book. It's really cool, if diffcult to understand at times. Also, note that the book DOES talk about Johann Sebastian Bach and how his musical compositions have complex mathematical formulas in them (I think. It's been a while since I read the book). This should appeal to the many musicians on this list. After all, Dream Theater is sort of "music for musicians." That's not to say that you have to be a musician to appreciate it. After all, I am no musican, though I DO appreciate good music.

I'll cut this post off here. It's getting rather long.

    Paul

P.S. If you're using Pine, DON'T do what I almost did. I have to quote the entire 'jam into my message, then cut the text I don't want. I went up to the message I was responding to, cut the text BEFORE it, and then responded. I left the rest of the 'jam in case I wanted to respond to something else. Well, after signing my name, I ALMOST forgot to delete the rest of the quoted 'jam. This would have sucked and I would have had to have posted an apology so as to to avoid people labeling me a hypocrite. Anyway, I remembered to delete it, so no big deal.

I'd still have to say that the best signature song for DT is Pull Me Under. I don't think it reflects all that DT is because they are a LOT and I'm not sure that there is one song that can put it all together. Actually, there is. A Change of Seasons. I'd use this as DT's signature song, BUT a signature song tends to be one that will be played on the radio. The person who started this threadtalkewd about "Stairway to Heaven" being Zeppelin's sig song. Rush's sig song is Tom Sawyer. Those are the songs that MOST people have heard by them. I'd say that Pull Me Under is what MOST people have heard by Dream Theater. It's the song that got me into them and even if it's not my favorite DT song, NOW, I think it's the song that MOST people (eapecially non-fans) will associate with DT. When I first heard Tom Sawyer, I thought it was one of the best songs I had ever heard. After I actually got into Rush, Tom Sawyer was quickly pushed to the back for 2112, Cygnus, Ghost of a Chance, Dreamline, Manhattan Project, Red Sector A, Subdivisions, etc. Now, Pull Me Under takes a back seat to Metropolis, Voices, Learning to Live, ACoS, A Fortune in Lies, Another Hand / The Killing Hand, Under a Glass Moon, etc. Of course, with Zeppelin, Stairway rermains my favorite, but I haven't gotten into them a LOT. I only have 3 Zeppelin albums. There's still stuff I haven't heard by them.

I noticed that Mike B. listed some music to listen to on Halloween. Apparently, my brother took a listen to Fly By Night (which contains By-Tor and the Snow Dog if you didn't know). However, I listened to some even more thematically cool stuff. I have 3-disk CD changer and the 3 CD's I had in were:

Highlights from Phantom of the Opera (Original London Cast) Helloween - "Keeper of the Seven Keys Part I" (this has the song Halloween on it) Soundtrack - The Nightmare Before Christmas

Dream Theater got less airplay at my house on Halloween since I've been listening to them a lot lately and I need a change (of seasons huh huh huh).

Then I went out to look for the NEW Helloween CD, which was supposed to be out on Halloween. I went to Blockbuster and THEY DIDN'T ORDER ANY COPIES!!! I was thinking, "What the fuck???" (And you'll notice I don't use much harsh language, so apparently, I was pissed). Anyway, I got Savatage's "Dead Winter Dead" instead (hey that rhymes). I took Phantom out and listened to that at least twice. It is EXCELLENT. I recommend this to ANY DT fan! It's even better than Streets or A Handful of Rain (haven't heard Edge of Thorns, so I can't compare). I also saw Perfect Symmetry (Fates Warning), but I didn't have enough money to get both. I have a feeling Perfect Symmetry won't be going anywhere, though. I'm surprised they had it since they didn't even bother to ORDER Helloween.

Oh yeah and PLEASE, everyone DO NOT post what you listened to on Halloween, lest thou incur the wrath of the Ystejam gods for posting another "Top 5 List" thread.

And don't E-mail me, either and tell me what you listened to on Halloween (that is, unless you are a single woman between the ages of 18 and 23 who lives in the U.S. and is not involved in any type of monagamous relationship at the moment). <G>

Seriously though, does anyone have directions that will help me get FROM MA to these mystical 3 sets of traffic lights?

Hey Brian, I'm with you on the Scarred thing, dude. I think its one of their best songs and its criminal that they would play another persons song before that one.

Also, i don't remember who but someone asked what size city the Jersey show is in. Well, the Birch Hill really isn't in a city at all. It's pretty much in the middle of nowhere.

Guess who just got in a car accident. Me! Don't worry, I'm not hurt. The front of the car is pretty smashed up and my brother is going to be grounded from driving for the rest of his life, but other than that, everything is OK.

I'm reduced to watching Beavis and Asshead (I like that better) for any metal videos. Huh-huh-uh-huh-uh-huh-huh uhhhhhh... that sucks.

Am I the only one who got in to MTV's Most Wanted? I called right when they flashed on the screen and I got in. I hope O:R did something. QR didn't make it onto the Halloween show, but I'm thinkin that maybe it'll be on one of the next shows. The dialogue seemed a little too planned out to be from that day. Although I did want to see LL Cool J announce Queensryche. That would have been interesting.

Has anyone noticed that when James startes singing "I'm kneeling on the floor, staring at the wall..." and all through that part that there is a voice that's talking along with his vocals? it gives it a sinister sound. After reviewing the drums in the intro of pmu and during JP's extrememly cool acoustic solo in LTL i've come to the conclusion that they are very similar, but that LTL is faster and more of a "bongo" type sound. Not a drummer, so don't be real critical. I just think its cool how dt incorporates similar things into songs, such as the (transposed to E from B cause i don't have a 7 string) A5 G5 A5 E A5 EE Bflat5 A5 G5 A5 E A5 EE G5 progression during lie while James sings "I'll try..." It is also used during the mirror towards the end. They sound different because of their context, however, so its hard to notice without looking for it. Thanks to Beth and Omman for the cookie recipe! I can't wait to get my mom to make them for me! Sorry to Matt Masi for the delay in sending a blank. I had a chance to get one on Tuesday, but the *$@!#^ car wouldn't start. I have a 60, but i'm not sure how long ad is and i'm just making sure. Hopefully I'll get one out to you next week I would this weekend but its Sadie Hawkins and my date is so freeking hot that I ANYWAY... Is the cdconnection the best place to get WDaDU? This is the second time i've asked this but i didn't get any response last time. Thanks for your time and keep up the cool Jams!!!!!

Of course, with the start (or re-start, depending on how long you've been on the jam) of this thread, my sick mind came up with these pronunciations: yahtzee-jam (throw the dice, or Roll the Bones, for Rush fans) yipes-jam (picture daffy duck in a Robin Hood outfit, swinging from a rope in a tree - "Yipes, and away!") ytse-etc ****** 2. DT and Fates **** And did anyone ever see DT and Fates Warning in the same show? Or did everyone at those shows kill themselves because they knew life could never exceed that one experience? Seriously, what were those two bands like together? Any reviews of those concerts available? **** Yes I saw them three times together, Dusseldorf, Ghent, London, I am still alive ! They were great , but not quite so good in London where the vocalist was too staccato all the time. Patricia

    Hey there folks -

It's been a while since I dropped my $.02 on the jam, so here goes.

    > I'm sorry, but it still sounds odd, check out the other times the > lyrics appear, it sounds ok then.

(ACoS - Love Lies Bleeding - 7:26-7:27 mins into song)

Well, I did give it a thorough listen and the reason it sort of sounds weird is because JP doesn't play your standard B major or B power (5) chord. I believe he's playing one of those cool, colorful, extended chords he likes to fancy, in this case, a B add 9. I think another reason it sounds weird (and I'm about 99 44/100% sure here) is because the root of the chord (B) is played as the highest note instead of the usual lowest. Here's my amateur tab:

    E ----7---- E ----7---- B ----7---- B ----X---- G ----6---- or, if it has the ---> G ----11--- D ----4---- low 'B' D ----11--- A --------- A ----9---- E --------- E ----7----

Make sure that if you play the latter chord, you defintely mute the B string with your barred pinky. Although the A# would sound good (major 7th), and would change the chord into a B major 9th, I do not hear it in this song. Hope I was some help, or at least a catalyst for more chord and tab discussion. Have a nice day. |\ Chris | \ |\ \ Faith | \ \ Hope ## \ | Love ### \| ## | | ## ### ##

The MOST important thing in London at that time is Joe Satriani at Wembley Arena on Dec 10th for which I have a ticket already. I have the listing from 'Stargreen' agency, so I can tell you . more . Their office is just by Oxford Circus.................... Right I've got through all the jams and I'm going home. It's 20 past midnight !!!

    --rHJMFtmnpdpIEjHPcO3WnCaa9Kd5E0G3 Content-type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

My turn for a big jam !!!! ******* Since I got that out of the way, here's a question for the UK- jammers: I'm possibly going on a trip to London mid-december and I'm wondering about cool places to go, good shops for metal, progressive etc and musical instruments, and all kinds of stuff a Ytsejammer would want. Could someone please inform me a bit of where to find what in London and if there are cool concerts coming up around 7-14 dec? I would be very, very grateful. There are UK jammers on the list, right, Patricia... more? ******* This is a bit of a jumble as I was just about to go home at midnight when yet anothe ytsejam came in, so this is made up from what I sent to someone recently plus some more stuff, no time to sort it out or check spelling. Go to Tottenham Court Road Underground station, some music shops along Charing Cross Road - see below too. just along Oxford Street from there is a large Virgin Records, further along is a large HMV, another HMV near Bond Street U/G. Don't go to Tower at Picadilly Circus as it is very expensive, but they do have an import section The following are listed Dec 6-10 in London Stargreen Box Office 20-21A Argyll St Oxford Circus - opposite London Palladium Phone - 0171 734 8932 I would not go to most of the following but you may be interested: Dec 6 Wet Wet Wet Wembley Arena L23 !! 6,7 Alison Moyet Royal Albert Hall L18 8,9,10 Bjorn Again (Like ABBA) LA2 L14.80 - that would be cheaper at the venue, which is near Tottenham Court Underground Station 8,9,10 E17 Royal Albert Hall L19,25 9 Ian Dury Empire Shepherds Bush **** *** 10 Joe Satriani Wembley Arena L18.50 13 Blur " L16.50 13 Therapy? Brixton Academy L12.00 13 Blue Oyster Cult Forum, Kentish Town L16 14 Marc Almond Shepherds Bush Empire L12.30 And of course the best which is Joe Satriani, as I told you previously. Unfortunately the bootleg market has almost been destroyed in the UK, but you will still find plenty of stalls in Camden Market. The guy with the DT video was actually in Camden High Street itself, not far from the Underground Station. He had a small stall in the street. >Are there also any record shops in/near central London that might >be >worth checking out? Boots and rare stuff are fairly expensive >here in Germany, As I said, you won't find bootlegs in Central London. There are some good shops in Berwick Street, off Oxford Street, near the Tottenham Court Road end (and not far from Ronnie Scotts, which you may like to see in Frith Street - also The Marquee in Charing Cross Road, also nearby). A good shop in Berwick St is 'Mr CD'. I'll post this on the jam too in case you don't get it and others may find it useful Camden Market is at Camden Town tue station on the Northern Line, one stop before Kentish Town where the Forum - of DT fame - is. Best to go there Thursday to Sunday, very well worth a visit. Patricia
