If you're closer to exit 9, you're better off taking that to Route 18
south. Keep going until the Route 9 south exit (it's the first exit
after the last traffic light, i.e. when the freeway part begins).
Follow Route 9 south for about 1/2 mile. The place is on your right.

HA!!, I knew I heard it. I heard it (as clear as day) at the providence RI
show in August. But, no one else confirmed it.

I think what catches everyone off guard is that they hear this really cool
keyboard thing, but it is so unexpected to have the keyboards play eruption
that no one catches on. When I yelled out "Eruption" at the show, instantly
the people next to me and the guy in front of me said "Holy sh**, youre right"
If John Petrucci played it, everyone would have recognized it instantly. It
    was cool

It really, really sounds like the exact same thing on the I&W
version of LTL, but on the TDoE version it's blatantly different. It's
basically the same pattern with about half of the beats missing. On TDoE
that is. It really does sound the same on the I&W version, but he's playing
much softer, so it's hard to tell.

IF, BY CHANCE, anyone has any questions about any drum parts in any
DT Metallica (only) ask me. Chances are I could answer it rather
    accurately. Bye.

Does anybody else use ACOS as a unit of time, just like the minute and
    the hour, only an ACOS?

It takes me exactly 1 ACOS to get ready for work after I step out of the
shower. It takes half an ACOS to ride my bike to school. It takes about
one and a half ACOS's to fall asleep at night.

Of course, ACOS can only be used as a unit of time if you are listening
to it. For instance, if Crimson Sunset starts and I have not even
brushed my teeth yet, then I am in big trouble. If I am running fast for
some reason and I am tying my tie on by the Inevitable Summer, then I
    have time to eat "dinner"!

I suppose you missed my earlier comment on this subject. I'll look it up
in my "outbox" and send to the Y-jam again. I'm disapointed too. As I
previously stated, that song is the most !#$&%^$$ rockenest song I think DT
has done to date. I also inferred they may have gotten in "over their
head" in the studio on that one. Ok, Mike P. or John P. read this and be
offended or challenged. I don't care, just play it the next time you guys
come to Dallas. Brian I'll see if I can find my previous post and send it
    again.

    Hi there guys and gals!

It's been a long time since I vented something here and you know, it
works quite well not spewing out boring 100-liners to the jam every day
like I sometimes used to. I noticed that some of you take care of that
bit nowadays... not flaming you who do (and they're hardly ever boring,
but the NIN, BM, lists thing make me sick, things just aren't what they
used to be), but hey, there are lots of looooong posts these days and IMO a
little too much traffic for the jam to be entertaining.

    ---

Since I got that out of the way, here's a question for the UK-jammers:

I'm possibly going on a trip to London mid-december and I'm wondering about cool places to go, good shops for metal, progressive etc and musical instruments, and all kinds of stuff a Ytsejammer would want. Could someone please inform me a bit of where to find what in London and if there are cool concerts coming up around 7-14 dec? I would be very, very grateful. There are UK jammers on the list, right, Patricia... more?

    Thanx lots!

..and the obligatory: where's my shirt and my AD????? Jus' kiddin!!!

Ytse: So what do think of Kevin Moore's demo? Jam: Demo? You mean that thing Airdance spewed all over the place? Y: Yes, the material in progress. J: It SUCKED!! Y: You think so? I happen to like it. I think there's a lot of potential there. J: Potential? Have you heard his VOICE?! Hello, Kevin Moore, this is Reality, with your wake up call to get a real vocalist!! Y: Come on, he's not that bad. J: Of course he is! He finally listened to the finished work, heard himself singing, and realized how awful his voice sounds! Y: Really? J: Yeah, and he was so horrified he got sick with testicular cancer! Y: Are you through complaining? J: Of course not! If it's not his crappy voice, it's Tori Amos! What the hell is she doing on there?! Y: Kevin just did a few keyboard tracks over one of her songs. I think it really adds a lot. I'm looking forward to anything he does in the future, if he can get a label to support him. J: Heh, yeah, then he can open for DT!!! Y: I don't know if his new direction is really in the vein of the material he wrote with DT. After listening to this tape, I don't think Kevin's going to be into the heavy stuff that DT seems to be getting into. J: What? He's forgetting all his fans!! That fucking SELLOUT!! Y: What the heck? That's about the tenth time you've made that accusation. You really can't say something intelligent? J: Intelligence? Who needs intelligence? This is the Internet!! Y: How can you listen to DT's music without a certain amount of intelligence? J: Hey, are you INSULTING MY INTELLIGENCE?? I've read mountains of textbooks on music!! I know more than you and me put together! Y: No, of course I'm not insulting you. You're a fellow DT fan, right? I respect you. J: Yes, I'm a DT fan AND a postal worker, all at the same time! We're more intelligent than EVERYONE ELSE!! Y: Postal...? I don't know about that, I mean... J: Hello? Hello, McFly? DT is WAY too complex for those other government workers! And those grunge-heads? Those LoolapaLOOSERS? Don't make me laugh! They could NEVER understand DT's music, not to mention the lyrics! Y: You said that you yourself couldn't understand the lyrics. J: Did not! You're just making fun of me because I'm the only clarinetist on the list! Y: Clarinet? Interesting. Out of 1200 people, you're the only clarinetist? J: Yeah, since there are 20 vocalists, 30 drummers, 40 keyboardists, 50 bassists, and 1059 guitarists, I am THE clarinetist!! If we were all to jam with DT, I'd be the ONLY clarinetist in the whole gang!! A crowd of 1199, DT, and ME, THE CLARINET PLAYER!!! Y: Cool. I myself do a variety of yo-yo tricks. J: Who? Yo-Yo Ma?! Let's see... Portnoy...Myung...Sherinian...LaBrie... Petrucci...Wilton...DeGarmo... Hey, there's no Yo-Yo Ma in DT!! He's that CELLO PLAYER, isn't he? There aren't any CELLOS in DT!! Y: Actually, if you listen really closely to "The Silent Man," there are strings in there. J: You kidding? DT uses...strings? Y: Yes, cellos I believe. J: I see. Then that would make them SELLOUTS!! Y: Yeah, sure they are. DT and every other band featuring strings. Sellouts one and all. J: Damn straight! Y: Look, lots of progressive bands use strings. J: What? You probably don't even know what "progressive" means! Y: Sure I do. It encompasses a form of music in constant motion and change, with the band shifting in its sound and song-structure from album to album. Lyrical themes involve the mind, communication, how people react with one another, and various poetic metaphors for life itself. Time signature shift unexpectedly, and occasionally the song-length gets up past 8 minutes, making it rather radio-unfriendly. J: Are you finished? Y: Other than that, progressive music is challenging to the listener, because it's unlike any other form of popular music in the world today. J: WRONG!! Prog-rock is all about modes and scales! You have to study music theory and be able to play jazz and classical music to understand it! Y: Or you could just listen to the music and enjoy it. 'Cause when it comes down to me and my tastes, that's what it's really all about. J: It's about enjoyment?! Y: No. It's about music.

    >Hi jammers of the world > Here is the Shadow Gallery review

    SHADOW GALLERY: CARVED IN STONE

After a first album "Shadow Gallery" with great songs but a quite low production, they are now back with "carved in stone". To summarize this album i'd only say: Great musicians, grat songs and finally great production! This time, they've reached a point of no return and can be considered as one of the hard prog representatives with bands like Dream Theatre or Queensryche. Their music can be defined as an alchemy beetween DT and Queensryche (without copying). Sometimes energic with heavy guitar rythmics and sometimes quiet with beautiful keys and piano parts. The singer mike Baker has a very personnal and emotive voice which suits perfectly with the band's music. "Cliffhanger" will make you up if you 're not yet with multiple breaks, powerfull guitar riffs and a savage drum. "Don't every cry" and its flute solo also features beautiful piano parts. "warcry" starts slowly before getting harder and harder. "Alaska" is a sublime song very quiet with accoustic guitar, piano and off course mike Baker's superb voice. A purely emotional moment. The last song is a 22 minutes piece gathering all SG facets: lots of breaks, a piano instrumental ,some quiet and hard parts and to finish a key part which could belong to Vangelis. So, with "carved in stone" SG becomes a major band and you should verify this buying the album. You'll tell me what you think about it!!! ludovic.duborgel@paris.ensam.fr

I don't know about anyone else, but the last 2 times I've seen Dream Theater, I must say I was a little disappointed. Not about the show, the performance, the sound or anything like that- they were GREAT as always. The bad part of it was they chose not to play not even ONE song from "WDADU"- which in my opinion is a kick-ass album (and th album which got me into them in the 1st place). I think DT should at LEAST have 1 or 2 songs from that album included in their set!! Playing the covers is nice- but they could be playing "The Killing Hand", "A Fortune in Lies", "The Ytsejam", or anything else off of WDADU instead! Well I hope the set list is changed this time around for the MALIBU show in December!

Hi all Did any of you bother checking out my comparison between the old Genesis track 'Horizons' and the intro of ACoS? What nobody? Well, here's another one that I stumbled across last night. There is, however, one difference: this one is a similarity between Genesis and Shadow Gallery (about whom there has been quite a bit of talk here recently, so nearly some DT content there). Right, sit down with your CD players, tape players, Edison phonographs or whatever, and obtains copies of 'Selling England By the Pound' by Genesis and 'Carved in Stone' by Shadow Gallery. First, listen to the Genesis instrumental 'After the Ordeal', then while the tune is still in your ears, listen to the intro from the SG song 'Warcry'. Like in the old Genesis/DT comparison, the music is not identical, but I can clearly hear a striking similarity, especially in the interplay between the guitar and the piano. Any budding music lawyers out there looking for cases?

Just had a great idea: we could lobby MTV to put on more country'n'western music. I hear that Dolly Parton does a simply huge cover of 'Bombay Vindaloo' (think about it). Oh, it's already been done, has it? Well, we could always try to get Ted Turner to screen more Beaver and Butt-Munch. Don't forget, us prog/metal fans are a much-feared pressure group, and if we want to get nasty, we'll come round your house and shake our hair in you face.

stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de)

Q: When is the new album due? What's it called? A: Tori has decided to keep the album title a secret for now.

First single released to radio: 12/11/95 (UK), 12/28/95 (US) First single in stores: 1/1/96 (UK only) Album release: 1/22/96 (UK), 1/23/96 (US) Tour starts: 2/23/96 (UK)

Tour dates and locations still not announced.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: I read that Tori "reconciled" with her father and is now singing religious songs? A: This was reported in "Parade" magazine (Sunday 10/15/95). Tori and her father disagree on theological points, but were not estranged. Also, she has not become a Christian artist. Rather, "Parade" magazine often just puts a rather conservative and Christian spin on things. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Dear jammers,

    >>>Hello everyone, it's BABS. I need to direct this to Jason Giles. I was wondering if the next time you do a batch of Ytsejam shirts, would it be possible to maybe get some funky crop-tops or even tank tops for us girls? I have a regular Ytsejam t-shirt, but I never wear it out in public because I literally "swim" in it because it's long on me. I was just wondering if and when you do another order you could get a small order of them, think that there are enough girls on the 'jam (plus probably a few girlfriends as well) that would buy them :)<<<

Actually, I like wearing tank-tops also. So, I think it'd be cool if we had ytsejam tank-tops!

    Yours, Jeff =)

Actually i've done this with a lot of DT songs. It's pretty funny. I would memorize the times and then say, well, i have 8 minutes until class, i'll listen to PMU and then i would know it was time to leave. I havent really done this with ACOS except at work. I work for 3 hours and i say the entire disc is 60 mintes long. I usually walk around for 30 minutes, listen to it twice, and then 30 minutes more and i'm oughta there.

Hi all, what do you know, King Lerxt is back again! :)

Anyways Im replying to the person who wanted to know what it was like to hear DT and Fates together? : ..... =========================================================================== And did anyone ever see DT and Fates Warning in the same show? Or did everyone at those shows kill themselves because they knew life could never exceed that one experience? Seriously, what were those two bands like together? Any reviews of those concerts available? ===========================================================================

Yes I did see them together. I saw them on their last 2 shows in 1994... I cant remember the dates now, but they were both in Southern California.

The 2nd to last show was at the Galaxy Concert Theater It was a sit down small club type atmosphere. Strange but cool. I had NEVER heard Fates Warning before but had heard a lot of people talking about them, namely Nathan Dayspring, on my QR/DT/FW message area on my BBS. It was also the 1st time seeing DT live, and I was a big fan already. Fates came on and I was pretty impressed. Mike Portnoy was throwing stuff on the stage (food and dolls and stuff) all night, it was a yuk-it-up and have fun, the tour is over, type of atmosphere. When DT came on the place was rockin. Fates returned the favor by throwing stuff on DT as well :) I cant remember the song list but it was very cool.

The very last show in 1994, I went with Shadowman (Evan) my friend.

That show was at a place in Hollywood, California...cant remember the venue just now. Anyways it was his 1st time seeing DT and Fates as well. He was into DT and not Fates either but now he is somewhat. Anways that show was in a small theater and so it had a normal concert feel to it. We sat up on the top balcony for a better view. There was a floor and pit but we decided against it. The show was incredible. No prankster playing that night. It was very serious business. The lighting for DTs show was incredible! There wasnt any lighting effects on the previous night and so it was a nice change. The sound was a bit bassy but all in all an incredible show. They announced they'd be back in the Spring of 1995 and we were happy to hear that.

Oh well, hope that gives you some insights as to what it was like to see Fates and DT together.

Anyone have dubbs of those last 2 shows in California in 1994? Would be great to have a dubb of a show you actually went to and can reminisce about :)

    Later all

    King Lerxt lerxst@voyager.com
