How did the Operation: Revolution go yesterday? I sent my mail, as well as
instructed my brother at home to get on our 10 free hours of AOL and mail them
as well. I tried to Dial MTV for an hour, but I got nothing but a busy
signal. We don't have cable in the dorm rooms here at UMBC, so I never got
to see if Anybody Listening charted. Please update us. Thanks.

I have also recently realized that I am guilty of having subject lines that
read "stuff" or "yo." From now on I promise to make my subject lines more
relevant to the information in my post.

    See you all later!

As far as a signature song goes, I feel that I can make a pretty fair
judgement based upon the fact that I own all of DT's "official" releases (ex.
I&W, Awake, ACoS, singles, etc.). After having listened to everything that
they have done I would have to say without a doubt that "Learning to Live" is
their best representation of their work overall. It has slow sections, piano
and guitar solos, erratic time measures, absolutely beautiful music, and a deep
thought-provoking meaning. If that is not pure Dream Theater, I don't know
what it (and I think I do :)!! Michael C., as you can see, I agree with you
    100%!!!!!

A lot of good Jams lately. The various incarnations of Ytse and
Jam, the comparisons of me and Portnoy (just don't tell anyone the big
secret, ok?) and that post on the Fraternity of Jammers, which I agreed
with in a big way, though I never got to be in a frat in college.

I want to take a moment to thank those other industrious Jammers
who are doing their own projects for everyone's benefit: Jason Giles the
T-shirt guy, Todd Strickland and the stickers, Jason Skewes with the FAQ,
Bafu Vai with his posts, Dr. Khoe for the ftp site, Brian Cox for the
ACOS tab (which sounds damn close _enough_ for my satisfaction... I just
hated tuning down!) Mike Backof for the indie prog band archive, and any
of those I've forgotten. I make mention of all these fine people because
they're offering something that's there for the taking, sometimes you
have to buy it, other times it's just something free for you to enjoy. I
get plenty of feedback on my CDs, so I'm very happy with the projects.
But I wanted to thank these folks because I enjoy the results of what
    _they_ are doing as well.

Okay, let me end this here and now: I had the Japanese PPV video,
and the wonderful Kaoru gave it to me. I really, _really_ don't have time
to be copying it up for everyone, since I'm trying to do CDs here. If
anyone here has access to a pair of hi-fi stereo VCRs, and would like to
serve as the originating point for this video, let me know. Once I copy
it off to you, _you_ can field the requests in whatever way you choose. I
imagine it might be like the Rush Video Montage where there was a minimal
($6-8) charge for the whole service, materials and postage included.

Another thing I wanted to mention... sometimes I get e-mail from
people apologizing for having been late with a payment or simiar thing. I
just wanted to let you all know _relax!_ I am not a bill collector; I'm a
Dream Theater fan! I'll keep your orders valid for as long as humanly
possible, and there is no condemnation for your having run into a bit of
financial hard times. It happens to everyone. Hell, it happened to ME
while I was waiting for Subconscious to be delivered! :) So it's
sufficient to just let me know you're still buying the thing, and I won't
be giving you a hard time about the money, I _promise_.

Q: And as an officer of the Dodge City police department,
did you stop an automobile bearing Kansas license
               plates SCR446?
            A: Yes, sir.
Q: Was the vehicle occupied at the time?

The NEW version of the FAQ is almost ready - but I need two things.

    1) I need the entire set list for the Uncovered gig. I want to include that
as well as what guests played with what songs.

    2) I also would like to add a section discussing what the song 'ACOS' is
about. If anyone has talked to Portnoy about his lyrics - please e-mail me.
I'm open to hear what you all have to say as well, just try to keep it
fairly short and concise. Also, I think we've probably been through it
enough on the list - so you can e-mail me seperate on this if you want.

If there is anything else you would like to see included in the FAQ - let me
    know.

I WILL have the new version out by next Wednesday.

I have this CD for sale. No-one seemed interested at $20ppd, yet
no-one emailed me either an offer or a flame. :-) So I'll sell it for
best offer of at least $12 (plus shipping), with $20 remaining the

I think we should find out the following:

       1. Where Bafu Vai lives and move in with him.
       2. What other lists he is on and join them.
       3. Find out if he uses IRC or newsgroups and join those too.

We should start a bafu Vai list. the man is too funny. Hey, wanna come to
New Jersey and be on my radio show? It's meant for you, man.

Hey, I've been subscibed to ytse-jam for about 2 weeks now and it
rules! Here are a couple of thoughts about some of the stuff I've been
    reading.
There's that Mike Portnoy snare drum sound. Somebody said that '90
groups were migrating toward it, and that one of the Mike's from Pearl Jam
Started it. The first time that I heard a snare with a high pitch was on
Primus' 1990 release "Frizzle Fry". I've always asscociated that kind of
snare drum sound with Primus (Pearl Jam's "Ten" was 1991). Does anybody
know of any occurence before this?
I just got ACOS this week, and I'm very impressed with their
"legendary 23-minute title track". From what I hear, it was all of you
ytse-jammers that got them to record it. I'd like to say thanks.
Some of you may have read my post in the alt.music.dream-theater
newsgroup. I am just curious to know if there is a bass guitar
tablature/sheet music book in existance for any of the DT albums? I've
looked at the OLGA guitar tab collection, but no bass tabs. I know that
there was a guitar book written (with the help of Petrucci) for I&W, but
is there a bass book? I can figure some stuff out by ear (like Primus), but
trying to figure out DT is like trying to figure out a Mozart symphony note
for note. The music is too structured and complex to memorize just a few
riffs, (how do these guys remember all of the notes?) If anybody could lead
me in the right direction as to where to find some bass music, it would be
    very appreciated.
That's it for now. I'll be back.

                                    -Jeff

    Hello jammers

This will be the first message I've posted on the Ytsejam, I'm not sure what my point is, but I need to talk about Dream Theater somewhere, as they are the greatest band of all time. We all know this. Anyway... When I listen to SDV and WFS, I think to myself "I can't wait for Moore to release anything" but when I hear his solo's live (like in the Ytsejam on Consciously Unreal) I think I want to cry about him leaving. He is without a doubt unbelievably skilled, nothing short of a genious in writing and playing. I hope DT doesn't lose too much with his departure (I wish he could do solo work and "head in new directions" and still stay in DT at the same time!) Does anyone know of any band in which the keyboard player acts as Moore did within DT? No one ever mentions Bombay Vindaloo! This is one of the greatest DT tracks ever! And what about the album "Instrumental?" The last track on that disc is un-fucking-believable!!! I played it to a local guitar player, he almost gave up the instrument (I mean he was completely in awe)! SPV is a 12 out of 10! The solo following TLF on LiT is orgasmic! Where can I get it on disc? I have Dance of Eternity (1 disc), but the version on there isn't as good, and the sound quality is poor (drums are way too loud, they drown out the guitar (course, it's still awesome)).

Questions: How many people belong to the Ytsejam digest? Does anyone really want to see DT become a really popular band (like Metallica)? Can I still order a copy of Acoustic Dreams? Will my money get there in time? Are there any DT fans in the Rochester NY area? E-mail me if yes! Okay, enough for now. God, I am so psyched to know there are other DT freaks out there!! The $26,000 a year for college was worth it just to get an e-mail address so I could get the Ytsejam! How come I never meet die hard DT fans in real life?

    Yah!!! DREAM THEATER!!!!

    -Matt

Oh, yah... Anyone listen to Anacrusis? Savatage? Lillian Axe? Can anyone tell me about the band Watchtower, and whether I should hunt for a copy of their album? And did anyone ever see DT and Fates Warning in the same show? Or did everyone at those shows kill themselves because they knew life could never exceed that one experience? Seriously, what were those two bands like together? Any reviews of those concerts available?

I, personally, am a huge fan of this tune and am quite bitter about the fact that they play COVERS in shows before they play Scarred. I listened to it, and it sounds OK to me, although I think I know what you're talking about. The basic rhythm of the fill is:

2-e 3 an 2-e-an-a 3-e-an-a Although probably not on the right beat. It just sounds funny with two quick beats like that, all alone with no one to care for them...sniff. :( Oh well. They'll survive.

Sorry about the non-DT info, but I wanted to back up the Shadow Gallery report in the last jam.....

Yeah, it's really not very much like DT, which I was quite disappointed about. However, the songs are pretty good. They have a lot of classical approaches (mainly through the pianist - great player!) to their music and they have interesting uses of chords (a lot of secondary dom's and borrowed chords). I have yet to REALLY listen to the album, but I can tell right away that it's never going to "hit me" like DT's material did. Although, they seem like VERY talented individual musicians. Great back-up vocals and individual talent. However, I really don't like the singer very much. He has good melodies, but certainly not the best voice in the world. Anyway, they kind of remind me of a very good late 80's/early 90's hard rock band with a lot of talented musicianship (kind of like a Lillian Axe or Tall Stories - anyone else agree?). Check it out; hey, after all, in order to have an opinion about something, you have to give it a listen! Rock on......

Three letters. AOL. It probably got filled after about 4 messages. (Mostly because it never probably gets used. I mean, 90% of people who LOVE MTV are blathering idiots. Probably. =) I watch it. I don't love it.

So anyway, I did the call-in thing and got a busy signal. Just like everyone else out there probably. Did I mention I got the busy signal about, um, 40 times??? How the hell do the expect to get any feedback if there's like, maybe one operator on duty!!!

Well, today (Nov. 1st) the number two video was TLC and the number one was Coolio. I didn't catch the first three though. *Sigh* Did Queensryche make it? Or should we wait a day or two longer to see if they play it? Or did they overwhelmingly receive QR as their number one song, and simply chose to ignore it? I wouldn't put it past them.

On the Ytse and Jam thing. Guys, you have a great idea going on here. One suggestion though. It can get old REAL FAST. I suggest posting them maybe once a week to ensure that they're fresh and don't get watered down. And you'll piss a lot less people off, too!

To the people who don't "GET" Ytse and Jam... Chill out, quit posting your complaints and skip past them. It ain't gonna kill ya to hit "Enter" a couple extra times!!!

I'm done with my 15 minutes of bandwidth. Jam on!

    Detroit/Toledo Jammers---

I live in Adrian, Michigan, and am planning on driving to the East Coast in December to attend the concert. I have two empty seats in my car, as of today. Anyone interested in carpooling? My girlfriend has an aunt who lives in NY, and we plan on staying there the night before, then meeting the rest of the jammers at a location TBA.

If anyone in the area wants to go, and feels like making room for two more bodies, let me know. Maybe we can oganize ourselves as soon as we have a headcount, and rent larger transportation.

We also need to get our hands on some tickets, which I have been unsuccessful at so far. Any hints?

E-mail me personally ASAHP. I'll be reading responses Friday morning.

Hi folks, This has been bothering me ever since I joined this list over a year ago, and dammit, it's time to vent! :) When you quote people's posts, how about if you only quote the part of the post that is pertinent to whatever YOUR post is about rather than quoting the ENTIRE post. I really get sick of wading through huge posts that I've already read in order to see a one-line response at the end like, "DT had an album before Images and Words?" ARRRGGGHHHH!!!!! So, stop it. Or I will destroy you. :) Oh yeah, the same thing goes for the people with the HUUUUUGE-ass .sigs--make it smaller, huh? Especially if you're going to post to the 'jam fifteen one-liners a day! Good examples include that guy with the really dumb-looking castle and the Fates Warning quote (the most enormous .sig I have ever seen, and not one bit attractive) and the guy who had the ascii art of the Majesty symbol (which was pretty neat, but we don't need to see it four times a day and have it take up half the 'jam...haven't seen him around lately, though, or else he changed his .sig). Wait! There's more! All of you who go out of your way to create new threads: don't bother. The best threads always occur sort of by accident, usually from a single post (like the NIN/DT thread, which I think is really interesting). Conversely, the most annoying ones (which are rehashed again and again) are the ones that people sit there and try to think up. "What are your favorite non-DT bands?" "What parts of movies do you think DT songs would sound cool in?" "What is the average Ytsejammer hair length?" (<--easily the DUMBEST thread I have EVER seen) and so forth. Don't anybody get offended by this post; this stuff has been annoying me for a LONG time and I'm having a rotten week, so I figured I'd vent. :) My posts lately have been really negative and I guess that's not really a good habit to get into, but I just can't help it. Some of you people are so silly...

Looks like a mirror, but she's holding something else too.

And when I briefly saw the SM single cover, the "gazebo" looked like a jungle gym to me.

    Hee-lo

"Don't expect your own messiah, this neverworld which you desire is only in your mind."

Maybe saying that the whole religion story is just in their* head; it's to good to be true, or something to the effect of that.

    * I'm not sure exactly who 'they' is.

At first I just thought it was about asome crazy guy who knew he was crazy, but didn't really care. Example: In the beginning, "Love just don't stare, etc....." Making you think that its just a story about the narrator and his wife/friend/something. Then, in the middle, "These voices in my head keep saying, Love, just don't stare...etc." implying (to me) that the whole story that you believed in the beginning is just a figment of this guy's twisted imagination. Maybe he's a schizophreniac and each part is a different life (in his head). One is about him and his wife/friend/something. Another is about a widow killing her husband. Another, JUST thought of explanation for the next part. The guy had an affair, and woman saying "Not a word, not a word" telling him not to tell anyone. "Devil in my bed" fits with that. And one is contemplating what religion means, another thinks it's a female character in greek mythology, and so on, and so on...

    Bye.

p.s. Did anyone else think that instead of (in WFS) "And call life from a cold metal frame" was "And call life from a quart of antifreeze"? Maybe I'm just stupid. Yeah, that MUST be it. :) I really did think that, though.

    Ok, a few quick things...

    z. Look for a new CD update tomorrow night. I have finally gotten the chance to sort out all the flood of incoming mail. There won't be a WDATU number list in it *yet* but there will be *soon*, supplanting the AD list when the AD list is effectively completed.

    y. I got the cover for WDATU from Brian Kirk, and it's going to really impress people, I think. This one is truly different from the beautiful cover that George Fan did for AD, but only in style; the quality will really hit you. It's very Theaterheadish. So I guess I can't wait to get the CDs done, eh!

    x. Don't see Fair Game. Saw a sneak of it a few hours ago, not worth it. The movie was so predictable, nothing was a surprise or even mildly interesting, other than Crawford's breasts. Ironically, the stars of the movie were the villains, or more specifically, their method of operation, which really pulled the viewer into the movie... for a short time. :(

    w. Someone asked if we Jammers have lives or if we're glued to the computer... yeah, I guess at least this Jammer does! I only get to sit down at the old keys once a day, or every other day if I'm busy. But I make it worthwhile when I do! :) Would we go to a football game, or go shoot pool, or go camping, etc? Sure! I just went to the Arizona Cardinals game last Sunday. Saw them beat the Seahawks in a comedy of errors, 20-14, in overtime.

    v. Listen to Scarred's harmony vocals (blood heal me, fear change me, etc) and notice the interesting overlay:

voice 1: Blood heal me, fear change me, belief will always save me voice 2: Blood heal me, fear change me, belief always (higher) voice 3: Blooooooooood, Feeeeeeeeeeeer (w/flanger)

I thought that was sort of neat! Especially since my band just kicked out our worthless singer and we're now practicing our backup harmonies so our next singer dosen't have to struggle with a situation in which _we_ are the ones who are lacking. So I begin to appreciate harmony vocals more every day... like King's X and Galactic Cowboys as well.

    u. What do you call a cop in a suit and a tie? The defendant. :) (corruption being widespread these days)

    t. Man, the Simpsons Halloween Special part 6 really SUCKED! Especially compared to the masterpiece that was #4, and the timeless classics of 1 and 3. 2 was noteworthy as well, but less so. "Otto, there's a gremlin on the side of the bus!" "Ooo, there sure is, li'l dude! Don't worry, I'll git rid of 'im!"

    s. In contrast, the Beavis & Butthead halloween was surprisingly decent. Cornholio's greatest incarnation was at the coffee shop (" The streets will flow with the blood of the non-believers!") and the original was great, but this one stood up rather well. I especially liked their costumes... Nachos and a Nad. :) They shoulda used the LIE VIDEO!!!

    r. Wow, three straight letters without DT content. I better do something about that.... uh... Don't tell me! Ya wanted me!! Don't tell me! Ya thought of me! I won't, I swear I won't.. dununuh nunuh duh DAA duninunuh dunuh Dununuh nunuh duh DAAA duninunuh dunuh I'll try, I swear I'll Tryyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!"

Okay, everyone....a true story of justice in the good old U.S. of A. Thought y'all might enjoy this; if nothing else, it shows internet justice, if it can be called that.

My daughter & I had just finished a salad at Neiman-Marcus Cafe in Dallas & decided to have a small dessert. Because our family are such cookie lovers, we decided to try the "Neiman-Marcus Cookie". was so excellent that I asked if they would give me the recipe and they said with a small frown, "I'm afraid not." Well, I said, would you let me buy the recipe? With a cute smile, she said, "Yes." I asked how much, and she responded, "Two fifty." I said with approval, just add it to my tab. Thirty days later, I received my VISA statement from Neiman-Marcus and it was $285.00. I looked again and I remembered I had only spent $9.95 for two salads and about $20.00 for a scarf. As I glanced at the bottom of the statement, it said, "Cookie Recipe - $250.00." BOY, WAS I UPSET!! I called Neiman's accounting dept. and told them the waitress said it was "two fifty," and I did not realize she meant $250.00 for a cookie recipe. I asked them to take back the recipe and reduce my bill and they said they were sorry, but because all the recipes were this expensive so not just everyone could duplicate any of our bakery recipes....the bill would stand. I waited, thinking of how I could get even or even try and get any of my money back. I just said, "Okay, you folks got my $250.00 and now I'm going to have $250.00 worth of fun." I told her that I was going to see to it that every cookie lover will have a $250.00 cookie recipe from Neiman-Marcus for nothing. She replied, "I wish you wouldn't do this." I said, "I'm sorry but this is the only way I feel I could get even," and I will. So, here it is, and please pass it to someone else or run a few copies....I paid for it; now you can have it for free.

    (Recipe may be halved.)

2 cups butter 4 cups flower 2 tsp. soda 2 cups sugar 5 cups blended oatmeal** 24 oz. chocolate chips 2 cups brown sugar 1 tsp. salt 1 8 oz. Hershey Bar (grated) 4 eggs 2 tsp. baking powder 3 cups chopped nuts (yourchoice) 2 tsp. vanilla

** measure oatmeal and blend in a blender to a fine powder. Cream the butter and both sugars. Add eggs and vanilla; mix together with flour, oatmeal, salt, baking, powder, and soda. Add chocolate chips, Hershey Bar and nuts. Roll into balls and place two inches apart on a cookie sheet. Bake for 10 minutes at 375 degrees. Makes 112 cookies. Have fun!!! This is not a joke --- this is a true story..

************************************************************ That's it. Please, pass it along to everyone you know, single people, mailing lists, etc.....
