If anyone on AOL wants to talk about the band "live" in a chat format, there
will be a Dream Theater room up and running Sunday night 10pm eastern time.
Just choose 'People Connection' and then look for the Dream Theater room. (It
is a lot easier than an IRC chat.)

I'm still looking for some info on any gatherings for the New Jersey
show. Does anyone have any plans on staying in a hotel overnight?
I heard something about some guy who had a big house that was gonna let
a bunch of people crash there. Whats up with that?

ALso, what type of town is this? Is it in a big city like Baltimore
or New York or more suburban? I've been to Camden, NJ for a Qryche show
if you want to use that as a gauge.

Thanks for any info you can provide!!

    Hi Jammers!

I think this is only my 2nd ever post to the Ytsejam (Yit-see-jam), so give me some leeway here if this is a little long.. Im making up for lost time :) Why havent I posted here? Probably because Ive been so busy and Im always behind on reading all the jams. 5-10 a day!?! :) But why complain. DT is great and to have a fan base this active really says a lot about Dream Theater.

Oh well, I have some good news to share (for me at least).

--== MIKE PORTNOY IN LA ==--

On Sunday I had the LA Times in front of me and was looking through the Calendar section for any good concerts and I happened to find a listing for:

    November 18th - DRUM DAY LA EVENT / KLOS 12:30 - 5:30

This was an ad for the House of Blues in Hollywood. On Monday I called in and sure enough it was the event that Mike Portnoy would be at. I asked for info and also ordered 3 tix ! : One of myself, one for my friend Evan (Shadowman) and one for the god himself... Mike Bahr! I had read one of Mike's posts here saying he was coming out to Los Angeles for the show but was relying on others to get the tix, and I didnt want him to miss out so I chanced it and got him 1 ticket. Later on I was finally able to reach Mike Bahr on his voice line and we talked. He was getting ready for school but he was happy I got the ticket for him. I look forward to meeting Mike finally and saying thanks for Acoustic Dreams person! (and maybe doing some tape swapping as well...hehe)

If anyone else here on the jam is attending that show, e-mail me or Mike Bahr and we can set up something to meet before or after the show and kick back, eat, talk about DT etc, stop by Tower Records on Sunset and pick up some CDs, or whatever.

In case you are wondering, here is the complete info on how to get tix for the Los Angeles Drum thing featuring Mike Portnoy:

House Of Blues 8430 Sunset Blvd. Hollywood, CA

Info Line : 1-213-650-1451 (24 hrs) Ticket Box Office : 1-213-650-0476 (11am - 10pm California time) Pray they still have tickets.!!

These tix are also available thru Ticketmaster if you want to go that route.

Ticket Prices : $12.00 plus service charge so total cost is $14.25 each.

Dont forget to write down your confirmation number they give you and bring it the day of the show.

There is NO AGE RESTRICTIONS!!! :) Not that I need to worry about that but I know some of you do.

They will have contests for drum related merchandise and booths and of course the clinics and demo sessions with the artists.

Be sure to bring some DT hats/shirts/CD liners for Mike to sign, and if you have one, wear your DT t-shirt... Mike will cater to DT fans/Ytsejam-ers for sure if he spots us. --- On another note, I will also be seeing Joe Satriani at the House of Blues on Dec 26th!!! I saw Al Di Meola at the House of Blues (my 1st time there) and let me tell you, its a VERY COOL place for a show... all good seats, and INCREDIBLE SEASONED FRIES!! :) --- In case your wondering about me...

My name is Stephen, Im the SysOp of KLCC BBS, Glendale, CA (818-240-9915) [feel free to call. My BBS specializes in MUSIC files and message areas] and I am also the Host of a Dream Theater/Queensryche/Fates Warning message area on TerraNET and WWIVnet (for WWIV BBS software) as well as a U2 area and a Rush area to name only a few of the 13 areas I host! :) --- My Top 5... why not.. everyone else got their chance.. so what the heck :)

    1) Rush 2) Dream Theater 3) U2 4) Metallica (Official Club Member. Email me for an application!) 5) its impossible to narrow it down but lets go with : Queensryche

I also enjoy about 50 other bands/artists as well! :)

    ------------------------------

I paid $6 for a dubb of Subconscious and it was horrible (the dubb not the CD) I will be looking for someone who knows how to dubb a CD without recording at FULL OUTPUT so all the highs and lows are lost and you have to play it at volume level 1 or 2 so you dont blow out your speakers! :( Oh well, the 'Dead or Alive' song made me laugh so hard! :) --- Oh well, I guess that will do it for me tonight, thanks for letting me have some time to share my thoughts. Hope to be able to write in again, but with the way things have been going...dont count on it :) Until next time..

    here is my interpretation:

the girl (woman) is the one in the tower

to expand on this, I am going to hypothesise that the woman is Mary (symbolised by the Ivory Tower [see 'eve'][the one with samples, that is]) and that the song is about (you guessed it) Christianity...

The drum part is similar but not quite the same. I'm a drummer and I have an interest in this guy's technique. I have played both of these songs before and there are definate differences. Listen to them again. I am an ear-trained drummer and cannot break it down for you in writing on the jam. Maybe someone else can denote the differences for you.

How bout this drummers, can you show these distinctions?

Got my AD copies Fri. (thanks, Mike!). After having the weekend an a few days to digest it here are my impressions...

    1. Another Day - I skipped this one initially, (miss the electric part), but now I think it's great! James puts so much emotion into this rendition.

    2. LSoaD - Good, but I prefer the "plugged" version slightly more.

    3. WFS - *Really* good. I think I like this version better without the piano. I wonder if KM is going to collect royalties on this one !>)>

    4. TSM - Okay, I don't really like this song anyway. This is kind of the "Rivendell" of Dream Theater songs. Sorry if I've hurt anybody's feelings by saying that.

    5. LIE - The best acoustic track, by far! Unique. It sounds like they had fun recording this one from the laughing and clapping at the end.

    6. Tears - The best version quality-wise that I have (as opposed to the SC and Mind Control versions). Bitchen.

    7. O Holy Night - Strange, call me heretical, but I like Charlie singing this *better*, and I don't think acoustic or electric would matter. James is good, but I think Charlie does it better (even if he goes flat in that one spot). I guess that makes me a hypocrite for flaming Jeremy !>)>

    8. Perfect Strangers - *Better* than the ACOS version. Musically, this version seems more "inspired." Vox: BD is good, but James does it better. I bet Charlie could blow both of them away! (just kidding)

    9. SO'c. - Good version. A friend of mine likes this mix _better_. "It's not as 'in your face' as the album version," he says. I think he's an idiot, but that's okay.

    10. CiaW - Excellent as well. Though I like the album versions of both this and SO'c slightly better, the quality of these mixes is _very good_.

Actually, the whole album is of most excellent quality. I'd hesitate to classify it as a bootleg. Mike, it's too bad you can't put these projects on your resume, seeing as how they're, um... well, you know !>)>

    here's my interpretation:

this song is about a girl (woman) coping with the Death of a loved one [her mother (or daughter)] she wants to Forget because of the pain: but wants to Remember because of the love: >> 'hoping that the memory/will leave her spirit soon' 'images and words [memories] are running deep/she has too much pride to pull the sheets above her head' 'she stares at the ceiling and tries not to think' 'and pictures the chain/she's been trying to link again [she mistakes the pain for the memory]' 'but the feeling [of pain] is gone/and water [tears] can't cover her memory [crying will ease the pain but will not erase the memory]' 'and ashes can't answer her pain [the finality of the funeral makes her feel no better]' 'God give me the power to take breath from a breeze/and call life from a cold metal frame [she wants her mother (or daughter) back]' 'in with the ashes/or up with the smoke from the fire [whether on the earth or in the heavens]' 'with wings up in heaven/or here, lying in bed [whether temporarily forgotten or actively remembered]' 'now and forever curled in my heart/and the heart of the world [she lives still in her memory though she is dead and buried]' <<

that's the way I see it

    > ALSO, can anyone tell what the girl is holding? I've only got the > tape, so it's pretty small.

it looks like a 'cold metal frame'

here's my question to the masses who have the LiT video: is the girl on the cover of IaW the same one as in the video for AD?

    1) The five categories should be:

    *****Skip this message******

    Hey All:

I would like to know the names of other progressive metal/non-metal bands either Christian or non-Christian that are in the same musical vein as DT. I addressed this note to Christians because I assume they may be more familiar with this type of music, but I would appreciate everybody's input. Keep in mind that I can't stand Stryper-to glam and MOR for me. Now I know there are alot of you guys/girls that can help me out there with this request. Each day it seems I read the Y-jam I meet (so to speak/write) more and more Christians. This is excellent! I love God and I got saved when I was 24 yrs old. That was 12 years ago and I love to boast about knowing Him and I'm I glad to see others out there that have made "the decision".

    1) My girlfriend listens to lyrics much more closely than i do, and she thinks that Wait for Sleep may be about incest/child molestation (sp?) Anybody else get this? Maybe I'll actually have to look at the lyrics, and (gasp) form an opinion of my very own. Maybe not... :)

    2) I bought the Shadow Gallery "Carved in Stone" album from what I heard in the jam, and I must say that even after listening to the entire disc 3 times, I don't like it. And I loved Dream Theater on the very first listen (Images and Words, to cover that thread). Musically, they're very talented, but seem limited to the "classical" approach, whereas Dream Theater pull a lot more influences and flavors into their songs. I also don't care for the vocals. Again, the singer has chops, but compared to vocalists like James, Ray Alder (from Fates) and Geoff Tate, he's pretty whimpy and generic. He just doesn't stand out. Again, this is just my opinion, but I think people should be warned, this band DOES NOT sound just like Dream Theater. By all means, check them out, you may love 'em (hi Ben :)) but they are not what you may have been led to believe... Maybe I'll like Ivanhoe better...

    3) I'm glad to read the intellegent threads (NIN vs. DT, Christian themes, etc.) When I first joined the jam, it was just a bunch of flaming and melon bashing (best left to Gallagher:0), and I was pretty disappointed. Not that I like Blind Melon (I can't stand 'em) but it's pretty pointless to read a bunch of people bashing a group ("THEY SUCK!!!") that I have zero interest in, and whose opinions (BM's) couldn't matter less to me. But then again, some of the humor and sarcasm was pretty damn funny. I just prefer the variety we have lately. And Bafu, how are those sock puppets doing?

Well, I'm sure this is longer than anybody wants it to be. If anyone still reading this, again, beware of Shadow Gallery. Great musicianship, no doubt, but NOT Dream Theater.

    Later, Paul

To begin, let me say HAHAHEEHEEHOHOHO!!! Joe, this post killed me. I laughed out loud at a few of the lines, thus I am breaking my silenzio to post a few of my reactions.

Man, you nailed my theme perfectly, except for the fact that you make Ytse and Jam out to be very similar, when actually they represent something very simple that I will disclose later. Hey, I can say this because I Created them. :)

While I'm at it, add an automatic smiley face after all of the below comments. None of them are hostile; they are all positive in one way or another.

    > From: Joe Kruger <jkruger@ee.net> > Subject: Ytse & the Jam Part II

That's already been written, but anyway...

    > Ytse: I think, speaking from the metaphysical perspective, that their > anguish is misunderstood. Much like that of Oedipus. > List: Nin sucks. Dt rules. End of discussion. > Frank: FUCK YOU. THIS LIST IS FOR DT. EVERYONE ELSE GET OUT.

Okay, sneaky, you got a Frank reference in before me. Frank is mentioned in the first line of Part III...

    > List: I'm compiling a list of accidental sample triggering - can you > tell me what sample it was. > Frank: THIS IS A BUNCH OF FUCKING CRAP. WHERE THE FUCK DO YOU PEOPLE GET > THIS BULLSHIT. I DON'T CARE ABOUT IT. Thanks.

HA!! Those Frank quotes are TOO perfect! I think you left out a few obscenities, though.

    > List: Dear DT. I love your music. Please add me to your mailing list. > AOL: Me too.

    Yes! Bash the AOLers!!

    > List: Can't we do anything to keep all the idiots off this list. > List: I'm tired of all these idiotic messages from idiots. > List: I'm tired of being an idiot.

Behold, the comedic miracle of 3.

    > List: How do I pronounce YTSEJAM?

ARGH!! You beat me again! I should have posted all four parts at once!!

    > List: Not again, someone should add this to the FAQ. > List: There's a FAQ. > AOL: What's a FAQ? > List: Where do I get the DT FAQ? > KenB: Please read the welcome message you deleted six months ago.

Ah, the inevitable, level-toned, somewhat frustrated post by Zeus to quiet the quibblings of the mortals.

    > AOL: I'm tired of everyone flaming AOL users. It's completely > unjustified. > AOL: I'm tired of everyone flaming AOL users. It's completely > unjustified. > AOL: I'm tired of everyone flaming AOL users. It's completely > unjustified. > AOL: Oops, I think I sent that message too many times. Sorry. > AOL: Me too.

    Bash 'em!! Bash 'em ALLLL!!

    > Jam: Ytse, my plan is working beautifully. There's absolutely no > discussion about Dream Theater going on. > Ytse: This is much more fun. I'm going to continue.

Hey now, that sounds like a veiled reference to ME. (except that I just refer to my other selfs as simply "hey.")

    > List: Ugh, not another poll. What a waste of bandwidth. > Jam: A waste of bandwidth! How much bandwidth is wasted by your > complaining about waste of bandwidth? > Hair: About .2 kHz. But it's outside the audible range unless you > tweak it.

ARARHGAHRHGHGHRGHGHHG!!!!! THAT'S THRICE!! The Hairball tech stuff doesn't come in until Part IV!! You're too good....

    > List: I always thought it was the Phyrigerator mode. > List: No, look here's the tab:

Phyrigerator mode... Reminds me of the popular yet unwelcome mode we bash here at Ytsejam: AOLian.

    > ------------e--k--------x-------x---s-----i----------- > ----x----x---m--c-x---x------x-e-----u---m-n---------- > -----x------x----u---x----x---s-------b-i---a--------- > ------------------f--------------------l-xx--l-----x--

Heh heh...neat idea...hopefully you will be called insane considering the lesser mental crimes I have committed and gotten thrashed for.

    > List: DuDE, Ur taBz mayk 0 cents.

    Yes! Bash Nuggetman!!

    > List: I'm a woman. I am deeply offended by all the subtle anti-female > sexual innuendoes on this list. > List: It was a joke; lighten up. > Jam: Well, you shouldn't be on this list. Women are incapable of > liking progressive music. > List: Yeah, because they have long hair.

You might want to tighten your neck a bit. Previous experiences have taught me that guillotines are waiting around every corner. (Yes, you're immortal. You can't die, but if your head leaves your body, you're finished.)

    > List: Hey, how dare you send messages to the list? Shouldn't you be > spending your time making my damn AD? > Bafu: I'd love to touch that one. But I can't with my strait jacket on.

Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. I suppose you think you're funny. Look, speaking from personal experience, stating boring facts etc. doesn't make anyone laugh. Try twisting the truth a bit in the future.

    > -------------------------------------------------------------------- > Disclaimer: > Any resemblance to real or cartoon characters is strictly intended. > No, I'm not Bafu.

Whew! Good to know I'm not getting up in the middle of the night and writing stuff from one of my other personalities.

    > I'm sorry if I offended anyone; my intent was to offend everyone.

Okay, wait a minute... Maybe you ARE me...
