To the guy(s) who were talking about Shadow Gallery....
Like I said a few jams ago, Shadow Gallery is/are damn good, and
I do love keys/synth, but they tend to get overblown. I think
you can find a happy medium with keys and guitars together, but
I prefer a heavier mix and Shadow Gallery tends to favor the
synth sound. Mike Baker is an awesome singer - and the melodies
are excellent too. But you can go overboard. If they kept the
melodies and keys to a minimum - well, maybe not a minimum but
I think they are overused. Maybe they could have solved that
problem by getting an outside producer. Lyrically, they are good
but I much prefer DT here. Shadow Gallery leans toward a more
"fantasy" bent lyrically I think. I don't think you can compare
Shadow Gallery to DT to any great extent; almost like comparing
DT to NiN which just isn't a good comparison at all. If you
are looking for the Shadow Gallery disc, try CDNow on the WWW.
I got it in 5 days. But be warned - those who like the heavier
DT songs probably won't get into this. I think the heaviest
Shadow Gallery song is probably along Innocence Faded lines...

Parth asked about Extreme going to extremes. III SIDES asked if God (god) was
dead, "who care's", etc. It's almost a mournful cry for the inexistence of God
(god). On WFTP they take the "There is no god" stance. Why the change? They've
always been pretty blatant about God's (god's) existence and who is in control
of anyone's life. On their first disc, "Watching, waiting" talks about the
crucifixion; all of II is about a child's exerience in the world on his own.
So it's nothing new to them, I just think they happen to get much more direct
on this latest release.
I think it's interesting how Extreme and DT seem to be on most Jammers' lists
of favs (of course, DT). We put so much into lyric meanings and there are a
number of Jammers who aren't really pumped about talk of Christianity. Yet, as
Extreme is a fav on the list, they are very blatant in their religious topics,
much more so than DT. LATER-

True Extreme's lyrics from their previous woks were very Christian in
nature (esp. III Sides) seeing as both Gary and Nuno have stated that
they are born-again Christians. I don't see how you see WftP as
"anti-Christian" though.
Extreme has always had sarcastic lyrics...check "Money," "Warheads,"
"Peacemaker Die," etc, etc, etc... There is that line in "There Is
No God":
"A fool that says there is no God, don't feel for that sorry sod who
needs proof if he'll believe..."
plus
"So *you* say there is no God..."
Extreme never states "I/we say there is no God." Gary pulls some of
his lyrics for this song out of the Psalms (10 & 14 esp.) dealing
with people who say that there is no God.
And with "Evilangelist"...they are just showing their frustration
with false teachers (of which there is an abundance of). I don't see
this as anti-Christian...
WftP is still very much so Christian in nature, but a darker lyrical
side. There are lines in almost *every* song that Gary draws from
the Bible or biblical principles...

The chord you refer to is at 7:26. It's definitely the right chord and it
doesn't sound out of tune to me. I think it's a 7th or something like that.
Being a drummer, I'm not too sure. perhaps some YTSEstrummers can shed some
light on the subject.

They're Ytse and the Jam,
Yes Ytse and the Jam,
One is a psycho; the other's inane.
They're laboratory nerds.
Their brains smell like turds.
The're ditsy, they're Ytse and the Jam, Jam, Jam, Jam, Jam.
Ytse: Gee, Jam. What do you want to do tonight.
Jam: The same thing we do every night, Ytse ...
Try to take over the mailing list.
Jam: Ytse, I've developed the perfect scheme for taking over the
mailing list.
Ytse: What is it, Jam?
Jam: It involves multiple steps - each separate, yet strangely
connected by one common thread - Flaming.
Ytse: What do you want me to do to help, Jam?
Jam: First, post a controversial message flaming another band about
how much they suck compared to DT. Mask your vitriol with a thin
layer of logic and intelligence.
Ytse: But, won't they see through to my real stupidity, Jam?
Jam: No, Ytse. They're mostly young college students. Some of them
actually think their professor's are intelligent. You should
have no problem fooling them.
Ytse: But, how do I do it, Jam?
Jam: Simple, quote very reliable sources such as Ayn Rand or the Bible.
Everyone will be so impressed by your referernces, they won't
question their content or context.
Ytse: Ok, what do I do then, Jam?
Jam: Send another hate-filled message from another account proclaiming
how the list should only be used for DT.
Ytse: What if no one cares?
Jam: Oh, they'll care, Ytse. This is religion for some people.
Let's get started with something simple.
(Jam sends message to list)
Jam: Boy, I sure think that Derek looks a lot like Booger from
Revenge of the Nerds - you know - the guy from Risky Business -
"sometimes you just have to say what the fuck."
List: No, he doesn't.
List: I think if he stuck his finger in a light socket and his face
into mud he'd look just like Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails.
List: Boy, they suck.
Ytse: I think, speaking from the metaphysical perspective, that their
anguish is misunderstood. Much like that of Oedipus.
List: Nin sucks. Dt rules. End of discussion.
Frank: FUCK YOU. THIS LIST IS FOR DT. EVERYONE ELSE GET OUT.
List: I'm tired of the use of profanity. You don't see DT stooping
to this level.
List: Actually, yes they do. If you went to the DT concert in East
Fartingburgstrasse Holland in 93, you'd know that John Myung
mouthed the word fuck when his tech stepped on a pedal by mistake.
List: I'm compiling a list of accidental sample triggering - can you tell
me what sample it was.
Frank: THIS IS A BUNCH OF FUCKING CRAP. WHERE THE FUCK DO YOU PEOPLE GET
THIS BULLSHIT. I DON'T CARE ABOUT IT. Thanks.
Jam: Ytse, are you pondering what I'm pondering?
Ytse: Uh, I think so, Jam; but this time, you flame Frank.
Jam: Frank, you weasel. Turn off CAPS LOCK. Don't you know anything
about the Internet. You'd think you were on AOL or something.
Ytse: Well, I don't want to start a religious discussion or anything, but
I think Frank's anger would be resolved if he accepted Jesus into
his heart.
List: I subscribed to this list to hear about DT. I'm going to take my computer
and go home.
List: Dear DT. I love your music. Please add me to your mailing list.
AOL: Me too.
List: Can't we do anything to keep all the idiots off this list.
List: I'm tired of all these idiotic messages from idiots.
List: I'm tired of being an idiot.
List: How do I pronounce YTSEJAM?
List: Not again, someone should add this to the FAQ.
List: There's a FAQ.
AOL: What's a FAQ?
List: Where do I get the DT FAQ?
KenB: Please read the welcome message you deleted six months ago.
AOL: I'm tired of everyone flaming AOL users. It's completely unjustified.
AOL: I'm tired of everyone flaming AOL users. It's completely unjustified.
AOL: I'm tired of everyone flaming AOL users. It's completely unjustified.
AOL: Oops, I think I sent that message too many times. Sorry.
AOL: Me too.
Jam: Ytse, my plan is working beautifully. There's absolutely no
discussion about Dream Theater going on.
Ytse: This is much more fun. I'm going to continue.
Ytse: I'm starting a poll of everyone's top five favorite songs by Blind Nails.
List: Ugh, not another poll. What a waste of bandwidth.
Jam: A waste of bandwidth! How much bandwidth is wasted by your complaining
about waste of bandwidth?
Hair: About .2 kHz. But it's outside the audible range unless you tweak it.
List: Speaking of hair, does anyone else notice how Metro Part I is in the
Minoxodyl mode from 5:23 to 5:24.

List: DuDE, Ur taBz mayk 0 cents.
List: I'm a woman. I am deeply offended by all the subtle anti-female
sexual innuendoes on this list.
List: It was a joke; lighten up.
Jam: Well, you shouldn't be on this list. Women are incapable of
liking progressive music.
List: Yeah, because they have long hair.
List: Hey I'm part of the YJLHBEIEIO.
List: IMHO, I think everyone should quit with the abbrs ASAP.
MikeB: If a chicken and a half lay an egg and a half in a day and a half

List: I knew the answer to that once.
List: Hey, how dare you send messages to the list? Shouldn't you be
spending your time making my damn AD?
Bafu: I'd love to touch that one. But I can't with my strait jacket on.
Jam: Well, Ytse, I think we need to prepare for tommorrow night.

My interpretation of Wait for sleep is a little different.
To me it seems more like a woman that lost her beloved man. Either
they broke up or he died or they broke up and then he died.
There are other parts in the lyrics that seem to fit in there:
"..and ashes can't answer her pain" - has he been cremated?
"..and call life from a cold metal frame" - a picture of him standing
on the shelf by the bed?
Well, these are just the thoughts and feelings that come to me everytime
I hear that song. It really touches me everytime I hear it, think I know
these feelings all to well...
And even if it sounds pathetic, at times when I sing along WfS, I change
the lyrics with reference to a male protagonist, so I can even relate more
to the song.
On other topics:
Ytse & Jam by Bafu Vai - loved this one! Seems to sum up all the
problems on the jam. Hey Bafu, keep the good stuff coming!
Also to Mike Bahr - I really enjoy your mails. Just the right blend
of DT related stuff and entertainment...
I hope future threads will also be on a comparable high level, like
the NIN - DT discussion.. shows that we're human beings after all..
No, I did not take part in the Blind M. thread and I hate polls.
so much for now - read you - jerry :--)

Actually, one of those times was in Philly...I distinctly remember it because
I

played
it at the 1st Chestnut Cabaret show, years ago.
They also did "O Holy Night" at the show near Christmas...which was the 2nd

A quick point...
Has anybody noticed the Mike Bahr are Mike Portnoy are very similar? A
scandal! Possibly... I have met Mr Portnoy, and have only e-mailed Mr
Bahr but both are very personable and have an affinity for obscure
musical recordings. Could Mike Bahr really be Mike Portnoy making boots
in Arizona to get James Labrie back for walking off the stage and making
him sing the end of a song several years ago? hmmm.....
<grin> for the humor impaired
The point is that Acoustic Dreams is a masterpiece, good work Mike Bahr!
Speaking of humor, when is Bafu Vai getting his own show. Put him on
after LArry Sanders or something, this man is funny! Hand puppet
parodies of the Jam.
I also want to thank the guy who started the NIN thread, you did pull

I have been meaning to write on this for a while, but you know how time is...
Anyway, since someone brought it up, I thought I would finally add my input:
I found this quote from Atlas Shrugged several years back. It's on page
225 of the 35th anniversary hardback addition. The whole quote is
He had no time for pain, no energy for anger. Within a few weeks,
it was over; the blinding stabs of hatred ceased and did not return.
He was back in confident self-control on the evening when...
This is way to close to LtL to be coincidental. Notice "the blinding stabs
of hatred ceased..." == "the sightlessness of hatred slips away" as well as
the references to "confidence and self-control". I love that! Just
thought I'd point it out.
Later,
Adam

When I think of "signature song", I tend to think of something that
encapsulates best their style, and will give people are global, yet
bite-size, impression of the band. For Example, with Queen, I would say
that Bohemian Rhapsody is their signature, and not cos of Wayne's World!
:) :) But rather, because of the fact that it shows them at their best
in the different styles they played in. For a band like Styx, I would
choose Lady, or maybe the Best of Times, since Styx are often more known
for their ballads. I don't think a song should be called a band's
"signature" song since it's the only one the general public is familiar
with, although oftentimes that is the case. I'm relatively new to DT,
and only possess I&W and ACoS, but I would call Take The Time more of a
signature, cos it has their fast-paced rock, combined with their smoothly
executed rhythmic changes, and skillful technical playing, all wrapped in
a eight minute (approx, no flames for not being exact on the time, please !
:) ) time slice, which allows anyone who would listen to a larger scale
work, such as ACoS or Metropolis, to say "Hey, that's Dream Theater!"
Just like, when someone hears a very clean, yet virtuosic, harmonica
solo, they can instantly say "Hey, that's Blues Traveller".
Hopefully I illustrated well enough what I think a signature song should
be. But of course, just my opinion. I think this is a great discussion
topic, to be sure!

'jammers,
If any guitarists want to discuss figuring out ACOS on guitar feel free
to e-mail me directly. I've figured out some of the more difficult
passages and some bits and pieces here and there. That is, if you can't
wait for the full blown edition that we're working on.
Also, to Partha: I think Extreme talks about a variety of topics, not
always from their point of view, which would explain the changing
viewpoints. I think that song about Martin Luther King is an example.

I think we've all tired out the DT/NIN debate. Can you guys discuss that
between each other? I'm sick of seeing 16 out of the 20 messages about NIN
vs. Dream Theater. Everybody knows now that they're uncomparable, so leave
it alone.

Jeremy,
If I'm not mistaken, you listen to Phish a lot and ripped that "one the
only" shit off from their Junta double CD. That's what I thought. What
forces drove you to do this?

I am agreat admirer of Marc Bonilla and would recommend his
playing. The music as similar to that of a big band, but guitar
based. Also playing on the album are Ronnie Montrose (Montrose),
Troy Lucketta (Tesla). It is great music to drive to and I
played both Marc's tapes over and over on my California Dreamin'
holiday. He also writes film music. Anyone know which films ?

Dear Jammers,
Hey there! I really need help from you guys. I think my copy of
Acoustic Dreams was lost in the mail somehow (it was mailed out about two
weeks ago and I still didn't receive it yet). I went to the Columbia
University mail office and they said they haven't gotten anything. Do
any of you have any suggestions as to how I should approach this, how should I
say, CRISIS??!?!? Thanks in advance!
Yours,
Jeff =)
