    Hey guys!

I got my AD #305 in the mail today. It is SO good! Very well worth
    the wait.

To Jason Hartman: E-mail me if you see this. All is well with our
trade, but I had a run-in with a disgruntled postal worker that I want to
    tell you about.

First of all I love to Shirt. It's a job well done!!!!

O.k I know I will probaly be thrown off of the face of the planet for
this, but I was a little disappointed by Acoustic Dreams. I must clarify
that it's not Mike's fault. The CD sounded unbeleiveable, expect for
those bonus tracks, but I guess I'd be yelling too!!!. I was irritated
by the vocals. I loved to music, but it sounded like James was tring to
be too quiet and was holding back.

I'd have to say that "Lifting Shadows" was my overall fav. I didn't
really like the guitar version of "Waiting for Sleep", but I thought the
bass guitar in the background fuckin' ruled.

Overall I guess I'm happy, but I wish James would have put more feeling
    into it.

O.k. I've said my peace please don't tear me up too bad. And no I will
    NOT get rid of it!!!!

Speaking of DT sweepers, I noticed one the other day on a local (Dallas)
rock station (97.1 KEGL)...it was the very end of CiaW, after the guitars
stop and only Portnoy is whaling away on the skins...anyways, I called
the DJ on duty and asked her about it, and she actually knew who Dream
Theater was, and had even heard of ACoS. I was thoroughly impressed.

Just a little excited that DT is actually beginning to get a smidgen of
    the well-earned recognition they deserve.

    Hello all,

For those of you that don't like the audience noise on those last two songs try this:

When you're in you room/apartment or house or whatever, just turn it up real loud, and people nearby will think you're having a party. My roomate thought of that (gotta give him credit. Hi Ted)

Add 2 more jammers (and an ex jammer) to the list of people going to the Christmas shows. I got my tickets for the Malibu and Birch Hill shows in the mail last friday, and (check this out) I got my AD (#243 or something) the same day. Needless to say, it was a good day. AND my roomate got the newest Helloween album that he ordered, and it had a bonus CD. So he had a good day too.

Anyway, one more thing, It's too bad those people that were frustrated with the jam a few weeks ago and ended up leaving didn't have any patience. I've found that everything goes back to normal after a few weeks. Just takes a little patience. Ah well too bad for them. -Brian Anderson

Well, YYZ was the call sign for Toronto International Airport, now called Pearson International Airport...

Hmmm, could this be a coincidence??? It just happens that the members of Rush are Canadian.... Did you know that Alex Lifeson (or was it Geddy Lee that) used to to live in my neighbourhood???

    I kid you not!

Another use(full/less) piece of Rush trivia. Lakeside Park was written about the CNE (Canadian National Exhibition) that goes on Late August to Early September. I believe the date the song refers to is Queen Victoria Day, where there is a nice fireworks display.... It also mentions the Roller coaster ride... Man, I haven't been there in a long time.

    ANyways: DT Content:

Is there a dub site in Canada (Ontario preferably or even Quebec) for AD???? I thought Paul Holloway would have it, and he thought the same about me, but alas, we haven't ordered AD... I do have SubCon if anyone wants to do a simultaneous dub/trade????

    Thx

    Scarred *Chapter 1*

    To Rise To Fall

John Doe whistled as he walked down the foggy street that evening. He wasn't going to back down this time. He was going to go through with it. He tried to forget the times he had tried, yet failed to ask. To ask Her to marry him. Her was Jane. The love of John's life. She had been for a long while now, and she knew it. God, how he wanted her to accept. John didn't think he could deal with it if she said no. He took a deep breath as he walked to the door of her building. He pushed the white button that buzzed Jane's apartment. He had pressed it many times before, but this time, his nervousness caused him to stand awkwardly, shifting his weight from right foot to left, right to left, in a sort of anxious rocking motion. "Yes?" came the answer from the intercom. "It's me", said John. "Um, now isn't a good time", came Jane's voice. John chuckled at her sarcasm and headed through the door to the stairwell. He jogged up the stairs to the third floor. His fingers felt for the small box in his jacket pocket that contained the ring that would soend many years on Jane's finger, if all went well. * * *

Upstairs, Jane was extremely worried. She tried to call down to the doorway again, but no one answered. The man she was with shut the door to the bathroom to take a leak, all but oblivious to the impending disaster. Jane sat down on the bed and prayed that the intercom was broken. She hoped against hope that she would not hear a knock on the door.

    * * *

John took yet another deep breath, held it for a few seconds, and rapped three times on the door of room 324. Nothing. He knocked again and the door opened. Jane stood there, hair frizzled and a worried look on her face. She still looked as beautiful as ever, to him. Jane cringed inside her mind as John smiled his unusually nervous smile. She watched, in disbelief as he kneeled on the floor and took the small felt-covered box out of his pocket and opened it. "Who's that?" The man that Jane had spent the night with had just ruined John's life. She looked at John. Her mouth worked, but she couldn't speak. It didn't matter, because there was nothing that she could say that would help. There was no expression on John's face. His jaw slacked, then tightened, as he stood up and ran. Jane started after him. She realized it was no use. As she watched him go, a tear glistened in her eye.

To be continued in...well, part 2.

    Author's note.

Greetings, Jammers. This is my Scarred story. Once again, the procedure that I followed was to put the chosen song (Scarred) in the CD Player on repeat and write what came to mind. Please pardon my use of "John Doe", for the names aren't relevant to the story. Once again, let me know what you think. I apologize for the "TSM" story. That thing was choppier than a Ginsu knife. Geez I love that simile! Just combine some of the sentences and read it again. Seeya in part II.

    >...we have long hair -well, most of us have long hair. We do have >exceptions; like Hairball ;)

Yeah, well...I kinda helped found it when I did have long hair. =) Glad to see an exception has been made for me. I think I've become an exception for many things. =) And the hair is growing back, so ya'll know. ;)

    ------------------------------

How true. I guess I feel my job here is to keep things lightened up or, at least, be a complete smart ass. ;) That, and clog up everyone's mail with engineering technical babble like this:

    >I didn't realize the NS-10m's had such poor bass response. >Everything I have sounds so muddy cos I compensate in studio.

For those of you who missed this, this might actually prove useful information. Yamaha NS-10 models just don't reproduce much below 80hz. Usually, the "woofer" (it's so small, I hesitate to call it that) will just vibrate when you pump a lot of bass through it. *I wouldn't recommend doing it. =) * They're very very bright speakers. I hate them, personally. It is, however, easy to compensate. You either get yourself a second set of decent, bigger (home-stereo sized) monitors and/or a pair of GOOD headphones. They do make flat response headphones, but, the NS-10 models are good for nearfield monitoring - which gives you a better picture of placement of sound in a "room" setting. =)

Oh - could all of you other engineering types drop me a line? erotomania@aol.com I just wanna know who we all are, and make sure I have your addresses in my address book, just in case. =)

    Alrighty then. -Hairball

I was listening to Rush: Hemisperes. I listened particularly to the wording and structure of the first song (all the parts). I noticed similarities to the Dream Theater: Awake cd. The way the songs follow one another on Awake give a visual picture of a man looking back on his life (imo). Then he looks at where he is now, then what can he do to be a better man. Hemispheres tells the story that gives a great visual that can teach us all a lesson. Listen, don't just hear, what others that know better are telling you. I still haven't gotten my AD disc's yet, but I am waiting patiently for them to arrive. With all the wonderful things I have heard about the disc, it is a difficult task, indeed. Those of you that have the Subconcious disc, could you e-mail me directly. I would like a copy of it on a, uh, what are those things called, uh, CASSETTES, yeah, that's it. Thanks for listening. Not to drag it out any more, but...

You're close, the Toronto Airport has an VOR (or Very-high-frequency Omnidirectional Range) which is used to guide aircraft to and from the airport. Bascially it's a navigational aid. All VOR's have a three letter code, which is transmitted in morse code over a certain frequency so that the pilots can be sure they have set their nav-aids to the correct station. In the case of Toronto, this code is YYZ.

Another side note on the subject: The band RUSH is from the toronto area, as we all know. But, did you know that Alex Lifeson is a pilot? Maybe, but the implication is obvious.

BTW, I've heard that AL is supposedly an honorary member of the Canadian Royal Air Force...and I have no idea why!

Anyway, that has nothing to do with DT! Sorry...

Two quick questions and I'm outta here. #1 - Does anyone else laugh hysterically everytime they listen to Bombay Vindaloo off LatM and hear that guy in the crowd screaming his head off for no reason at all? It's probably not that funny to anyone, but usually if someone in the crowd yells something, it's something like "DT rules!" or "Play Stairway!", not just an incoherent scream. OK, nevermind. #2 - Does anybody know if there's someone opening for DT at the Malibu show, and if so, who? All righty then, see you later jammers. Oh, I forgot, could someone e-mail me how I can get a ytsejam t-shirt? I need to know how I can get one. I'm at long16@matrix.newpaltz.edu. Thanks.

Lifting Shadows off a Dream (intro)

Speaking of LSoaD.... I thought of something. Does John Myung see a psychiatrist? Think about it...

"Lifting Shadow off a dream..." The psych helps him figure out what his dream means. "She can turn a drop of water into an ocean" She turns a small amount of knowledge about what it means into a large one. "And she listens openly..." And she listens openly.

    That's my insight for today.

To Patricia McLoughlin (and anyone else who was wondering):

Nope...there's no guitar solo in DP's version of Perfect Strangers. Their version just ends on a fadeout of that whole "dah-dah-dah dah-dah-dah dah-dah-dah" section, and Mr. Petrucci's solo at the end of DT's version is completely his own invention.....

Wow... I was just listening to Meat Loaf's _Bat Out of Hell_ for the first time in ages, and it struck me how friggin' amazing it would be to hear DT perform a cover of the title track. If you don't believe me, find yourself a copy and check it out! Oooo man, if they'da played at least part of it at Ronnie Scott's they'da blown the roof off the dump.

OK, so they *did* blow the roof off the dump. Even harder, then. :)

Here's another "drum quiz" for ya. Should be pretty easy. Read it top-to-bottom, the dashes are 16th notes:

    - boom - - ra - ta - tat - - ba - ba - boom tat - - - tat - - - tat - - boom ra - ta - tat - - tssh - - ba - ba - boom

    etc.

    Dream on, brothers and sisters...

    hmmm ....

to whom ever inquired before... i came up with more info on this prog metal band called masquerade .... i asked my friend Dax who plays in a local band with that name and he did not have any knowldge of their tapes being circulated in california ... then today , in the local music newspaper called THe Glass Eye there was a review of a band by that name that is signed to Metal Blade and it compared them to Queenryche and DT ... SO .... i assume that the tape you have is not the band i know because they do not have a deal with metal blade records ...

Hi all, I'm replying to something I saw in the last 'jam (sorry I don't recall who wrote it) about Geddy Lee involved in a side project with Primus! If this his true, that's really great! Since you were wondering, the connection between Rush and Primus is that Rush is one of Les (Primus'legendary bassist) Claypool's biggest influences, along with King Crimson (who's probably their biggest). So I would imagine Les would be delighted if the bassist from one of his biggest influences would be playing with them! If anyone has any more info on this, PLEASE let me know privately or on the 'jam or whatever! :)

PS--"Les" than two weeks 'til I see Primus again!!! :)

    1) > Yes, YYZ's 5/4 section in the beginning is indeed morse code (not mainly > Neil's opening pattern; when the band cuts in). If you say these out loud, > you'll kind of hear/get a picture of the opening riff through "syllables." > > Y = Long, short, Long, Long > Z = Long, Long, short, short

I dont get this at all!!!

    2) >Besides, if you pump a frequency response of 50-18kHz through the stock 6.3 >watt amp to two 6-1/2" poly woofers and two 4's, anything would sound crappy.

Well if you want to get technical, if think you meant 50Hz not kHz, because 50kHz, I think, is getting close to being out of the hearing range for humans. Also I dont think that many bands would record many songs that emphasised frequencies this high!

But then again a pair of stock 6-1/2" and 4" speakers would not be able to produce either 50Hz or 50kHz! So Andrew, you are pretty much wrong anyway you look at it unless you meant 500Hz!

------disclaimer------- I am totally havinbg fun w/ this, please do not anyone get angry w/ me and flame or think I am a jerk. No harm intended

    3) > Now all I need are my special badges for being > part of the YJLHB

What the !@#$%^&* is that abreviation?

    4) >When they called 911, when they found out the >guy was an Indian, 911 refused to send an ambulance. A full 45 minutes after >the call to 911, they finally got him to a hospital where he died a short >time later.

This is horrible and I am deeply compassionate to the family and freinds of this person, but I want to say that it goes bothe ways...My family was in Cherokkee N.C. camping when my little sister slipped on a rock and busted her head wide open. Because we were white, medical treatment was refused and we had to drive 45 mins away to get help.

But, lets not get that whole racial thread going again! :)

    5) >How about this one: Why are the Lie and Silent Man singles only available >as imports?

They're not. I have found them at Circiut City, Sam Goody's and many other places. Just start looking somewher other than your noprmal CD stores maybe??...?? ____________________________________________________________________________ "...Every day there's a constant reminder of all the pleasures we shared together.
