I think listening to Dream Theater a little too loud killed the plant I was
trying to grow. All of the scientists say that loud screaming and
aggresive music will kill your plant. Oh, well. The songs are worth the
plant.

Drummer Steve Wacholz wasn't really involved with Handful of Rain anyway,
and hasn't done anything with the band since recording 'Edge of Thorns'
('93), of which he did not tour in support. Session musicians filled in
on drums for the EOT tour. Jeff Plate, a former bandmate of Zachary
Stevens (back in his Wicked Witch days) appears to be the permanent
replacement, having toured in support of Handful of Rain and recorded
'Dead Winter Dead'.
The guitar player on Handful of Rain ('94) was merely a guest musician
who came on for one album/tour as a favor to the band in the wake of
Criss Oliva's death. Of course, this guest musician was ex-Testament
axeman Alex Skolnick.
Also note that 'new' guitar player Chris Caffery isn't really new at all
- he recorded and toured in support of 'Gutter Ballet' in 1989-90.

Hey everyone.
I haven't written much but read all the time. Does anybody know
what the symbol on all the DT CD's means or is or whatever? I can't tell
if it's a V with three I's over an omega symbol or what. I'm basically
just clueless. Could someone please enlighten me if they have any clue
(which I'm sure many of you do)? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

I've been wondering if anyone else has noticed that the vocals sound
a bit "odd" on the Zep Medley from ACOS. The sound really flat and thin
like they ran them through some massive compression or something.
James doesn't have any bottom end or that certain sparkle to his voice
during this track.
Were they possibly duplicating some effect from the original version maybe?
----Do any of you have the original versions of these songs?
Funeral/Love Lies Bleeding - Elton John (Goodbye Yellow Brick Road) Perfect Strangers - Deep Purple (Perfect Strangers) Red Hill Town - U2 (Joshua Tree) Rover - Led Zep (Physical Graffitti) Turn It On Again - Genisis (Duke)
I would really like to find one person that has all 5 of these on CD. Or at least someone with 3 or 4 of the 5 on CD. Please e-mail me if you do, you'll be glad you did. ;)

My original intent was to post about the ending of the big medley being different on the ACOS CD as apposed to the actual bootleg recording of the entire show. But then something else caught my attention. But 1st I'd just like to say that when they did the song at Ronnie Scotts, Turn It On Again ends just like on ACOS (with those 2 snare hits) but there is no crowd noise yet and John P plays the 1st 3 notes of Pull Me Under. Right after those 3 three notes, they all hit their last big chord and everyone starts cheering etc. It would have been cool to leave that on there.
Anyway, the other thing I discovered is that it seems that James redid the vocals for Turn It On Again. The ACOS version doesn't really match with the actual performance. I haven't really sat down and listen to the whole tape, comparing it to all of the ACOS versions but I wouldn't be surprised if they did it on other spots on ACOS.

Well, its true. One of my favorite live James' bits is a lie... :( It really should have been called Lovin', RE-touchin', Squeezin'. The vocals are definately different. Don't bother mentioning a pitch corrector cause it would take more than that to transform the actual version into the version we find on ACOS. We would need a crack correction. :)
Man, I should stop listening to the actual tape. I'm loosing appreciation for the ACOS versions!! ARGH!!!

The 'jams are just FLYING into the e-mailbox today!
Firstly, to he/she/it/they who remarked about Petrucci's solo in "Pull Me Under" sounding much like the one in Queensryche's "The Mission," I disagree. The chords in each piece are the same, so anything played over them might sound a bit similar, but overall the solos didn't sound that similar to me. Yes, the last lick in each is descending and really fast, but otherwise I don't see how they can be compared.

Dream Theater is my favorite band.
I dislike Rush. And Pink Floyd. And Yes. And Iron Maiden. And Genesis. In fact, the only influence DT has mentioned that I like is Metallica.
> Bottom line: Listen to what you like, and try and expand your mind, but > don't waste your time bitching that evreything else sucks, life is too > short.
Speaking of which, Dragon was right. Tiamat is a pretty smooth band if you can get past the roaring-thunder vocals. And no, for the wondering masses, there are no five-headed dragons on the album cover. Perhaps the vocalist watched too much "Dungeons & Dragons," and decided that when he got into a band he would sing like Tiamat himself. The album, "Wildhoney," reminded me very much of the movie Legend, with a definite Tangerine Dream-aspect in their softer material. A lot of what they do would make good music for fantasy films. Very moody and melodic with some interesting counterpoints here and there.
The ten tracks are continuous, except for the extreme changes in mood and sound. Hard to soft and back again. I think a better, more realistic track listing than what they have now would have been something like "Death's Theme Music," then "Fairies Floating In The Wind," then "What Pain Sounds Like," then "Autumn Leaves Drifting Down A Stream," etc.

Yes, I've noticed. I don't think it would be possible to get that studio-perfect tone in a live situation. I think Petrucci realized this himself, as whenever they do PMU live, they begin with the intro from the cd. That might not be "real" live-music, but boy does it sound better.
> Also, has anyone out there read "Metamorphosis" recently?
Mike Portnoy awoke to find himself propped up on his fingers, inches above the mattress. His bulky drummer's-legs had somehow been replaced with normal ones, and he rolled over onto his back to get a better view of them. He extended his hands, waving his new, longer fingers in the air. They were unusually long compared to the rest of his shortness. They were very much like the fingers of a guitarist.
"What has happened to me?" he thought. It was no dream. :)

Now they're called Lucy's Milk and have a different guitar > player. Somehow I couldn't handle Sam from Different Strokes saying, > "C'mon queeny, rock my body."
First thought: "Lucy's Milk?" What, they change their name, and their music gets better? Like that's possible? I thought that album was terrible. What the hell was Steve Vai thinking? Did he want to have an embarrasing piece of the past to hold over those boys' heads until their DEATHS? Was he hoping to blackmail them ten years from now by threatening to re-release the album to the public? The vocalist sounded awesome, and that was the only redeeming quality I could find of the entire work.
Second thought: In essence, that whole thing was Steve Vai kicking back and having a little fun. One word: puppetmaster. The production and sound were great, and a lot of the lyrics were really creative, but overall it was a lot of ya-yo gakk. "Nineteen" was kind of catchy, but that album was basically glitter dipped in cheese whiz.
Third thought: So now they have a different guitar player? Let me guess, Thomas McRocklin left the band, the other three members changed the name, and of course, with McRocklin gone, Vai is gone, too? Is McRocklin going to release a solo album? In my humble opinion, "prodigy" was a rather misleading and improper title for that guy. Yes, GUY. He isn't 12 years old, and wasn't 12 years old during the recording of that album.
Onto Dream Theater-related topics...

Ok, I have a couple of questions about the New York show on December 28th. First, does anyone know if anyone is opening, and if so, who? Second, has a final meeting place been set yet for before or after the show? Third, would any kind sole be able to pick my friend and I up from his house in Waldwick, New Jersey (about 30 min's from the NYC, I think) and take us to the meeting spots/show? (We have our tickets, just no ride yet, and I don't really feel like paying for a cab) And finally, because some people seem to be so interested in getting one set up for the 28th, what is a Ytsecon? (I'm pretty new to the 'Jam)
For those asking about Alex Lifeson's solo album victor, the other special guest, besides Les Claypool and Edwin, the singer from I Mother Earth, is Sebastian Bach, the singer for Skid Row. The album is now due out January 9th. Rush has seven songs written out of the ten they'd like to have for the new album, and plan on going back into the studio in January.
Thanks for putting up with my questions, and I hope to see many of you on #ytsejam and in New York.

I just had to share this. Just saw the Chili Peppers on Letterman. Their drummer had his left arm in a big-ass cast, and played with only one arm! At first, I'm thinking, how is this guy gonna hold a stick and move that arm around. He didn't even use his left arm! And I didn't even notice until they showed him just holding that arm there.
Just thought that was cool.

Jammers,
I just wanted to say to anyone who didn't see this if you are a Kiss fan or a HR fan, this was by far the best unplugged eMpTVy has ever aired! This was just incredible. Seeing Ace and Peter back on stage with Gene and Paul was so incredible. I got chills during "Beth". 1/2 a Kudo to eMpTVy for airing this. I might half to try and organize a petition on the Kiss Mailing List to send to Polygram to get them to release this on CD, doesn't look like they are gonna release it. Who did the one for ACOS? If you wanted to see this keep watching on eMpTVy maybe they will replay it.
Also to those who were asking about OPERATION: REVOLUTION I checked eMpTVy's spot on AOL and their www page and found nothing on it.

I just went out and bought Savatage's new album (Dead Winter Dead), and I must admit, I'm pretty impressed. The only other Savatage album I have is "Handful of Rain", which from what I hear isn't as good as their earlier stuff. I definately like DWD much better than Handful of Rain...
I'm not gonna go into some huge review of the thing, since I've never really had a chance to get into Savatage. But it's well worth getting, it's got some really cool stuff on it. I like classical music a lot, so it was quite interesting to see the Mozart and Beethoven stuff mixed with a metal sound. Overall, it's great, but I don't like Zak's voice too much. Sometimes it's tolerable, but sometimes it just gets way too annoying. So I've found myself skipping over a few of the songs that are mostly vocals. But the instrumental stuff is great, except for the fact that it's a bit repetitive. It seems as though they like the classical element, but have trouble writing their own classical-sounding riffs, etc. The stuff they added overtop of the cello, etc. was cool, but the original parts that were added (thinking about that little piano thing in "Mozart and Madness") just got extremely repetitive to the point of being really annoying. Also, let's face it, the stuff the band comes up with is nowhere as good as Mozart, so it's kind of a letdown to hear these little exceprts of Mozart's work, only for them to be followed by something kinda cheezy and repetitive.
Sorry if I'm being a bit negative, that wasn't really the point, it's just that there were a few things that really bug me about the album that stick out more than the good points. But overall, it's a really good album, and I will be checking out more of Savatage's stuff.
[...]
On another note, I didn't see any DT requests, but if you get Much Music (or hell, even if you don't!) keep sending in requests every now and then, if possible. I think the best way to let MM know that there are DT fans out there is to make sure they get requests for them all the time, unless we were to organize some Canadian version of OPERATION:REVOLUTION, which I don't think would work too well since so few people here live in Canada or get it via a dish.
[...]
Speaking of Operation:Revolution, how did it go? Anyone? I've seen other people asking, but no responses from anyone. Did "Anybody Listening?" actually get played? Did O:R accomplish anything at all?
[...]
Well, if people are going to post their answers to polls to the list, I guess I may as well comment. I find it interesting how many jammers list LTL as their LEAST favourite song, whereas many others list it as their favourite. It seems there isn't much middle ground here. I personally think LTL is one of DT's masterpieces, I'd rank it, Metropolis and ACOS as the "big three", for me anyway, with TTT, UAGM, and TKH (with James singing) close behind. BTW, I also love Bombay Vindaloo and TLF, two songs which seem to be all but forgotten here (although to the people who've been complaining that no one seems to care about BV, I hear ya!)
My favourite songs are Metropolis and LTL (close to a tie, although I'd have to give the edge to Metropolis, since I've been listening to it far more often lately than LTL), my least favourite: definately, without a doubt Status Seeker, the cheesiest DT song ever (no flames please!).

I realize most of you already have heard Kansas, but I have to say it. They are a lot like Dream theater except less heavy. Really, they are just about the only light music I can stand. I own Monolith which I really like. Can anyone suggest some other great albums they've produced? Based on this one album they are in my top 5 band ever.

I know that somebody proposed this before, but we should all find a common time to meet on #ytsejam to talk. Say 10:00 or 9:00 pm. This way, everyone can get together. Some people I would like to talk to on the channel before I die. Bafu Vai, Mike Bar, (sorr for the butchered spelling), Ben, Mr. Allen, (the one I traded boots with), and whoever else I may have missed that's really cool. Let's figure out a common day/time and get together.
