            DENIED!

I can't come to Los Angeles for Drum Day. (Steve, I'll pay ya
back for the ticket anyways...) I'm sorry I won't be able to meet all of
you coastal Jammers. All sorts of shit just came up this week.

Those of you with international orders less than #350 that had
not arrived yet: I had some of them get sent back through customs because
I forgot to write the value on the slip. D'oh! What an error. I've since
corrected it and re-sent them. Sorry for the delay. Oh yes, this was for
    Acoustic Dreams.

I will likely post an AD/WDATU update tonight, watch for it! :)
    Full numberings and everything.

    About Fates Warning:
    Get Parallels. Great album.

    >But I'll agree - DT lovers will not necessarily like this album.
    >Kansas is NOT heavy enough for many of the people on this list.

I think the bottom line here is this: Kansas's music, whether it's
heavy or not, is incredible. Period. If you're of the mentality
that "If it's not heavy, it sucks," you're definitely missing out on
some brilliantly composed and arranged music. And that's just
    plain close-minded & stupid.

Shit - Think about THIS: Yngwie Malmsteen actually praised
Kansas for their "orchestration" (arrangement) skills.
When's the last time you heard Yngwie say ANYTHING nice
about ANYONE...except himself, Hendrix, Blackmore, Bach,
    Mozart, or Paganini, of course...

I just think that Kansas, as it stands now, leaves a lot
to be desired. I mean, sure, David Ragsdale is a very technically
good player, but, his tone sounds SO PLASTIC, and so rigid.
Rob Steinhardt, on the other hand, was accurate, AND played
with FIRE! =) His violin playing just kicks ass.

    >[Monolith], however, contains a lot of the musical sounds and
    >"nuggets" that fill all the other albums.

Anyway, those two albums are probably the least Kansas-y
    albums...but, I love 'em as well. I don't think there's a Kansas
CD released before 1990 that I don't like. Everything past that,
you can have. ;) (except the box set)

    >The arrangement of "Mysteries and Mayhem" makes it into a fun
    >metal song.

Until you see the video tape of it. That whole long violin sustained
section is just an excuse for Ragsdale to switch over to the guitar...
in all actuality, what REALLY happened is that Dave took a violin
solo, then a guitar solo, and THEN the song picks back up.

And the way they edited it on the CD just doesn't do it for me. The
solo, BTW, wasn't all that & a bag of chips either. =)

    >You get "Down the Road" and "Lonely Street" and both are a lot
    >of fun live.

    #1 - I just miss Robbie Singing DTR. :(
#2 - Lonely Street demonstrates what Walsh's voice sounded like
back in, what, 1975? Sheesh! =)

OH, and incidentally - if you're in the Philly/NJ area, and you
listen to WPST, they're letting me talk on the air now. I took the
name "Zack," simply because I like that name. =)

If you hear someone say, "97.5, 'PST, I'm Zack..." It's me.

-Hairball, the LONG WINDED...and I just found out I've been
on the 'Jam since #583...wow, has it been that long?! =)

Thomas did release an album a few months ago, covering ALL the

Apparently he was doing Van Halen covers in his father's band

Has anyone noticed a rather interesting trend lately? The trend I'm
referring to is this trend of bands sounding a lot like each other. For instanc
, Bush sounding exactly like Nirvana, only with English accents; Silverchair
sounding like Pearl Jam, only less relevant; and Toad the Wet Sprocket sounding
like Gin Blossoms sounding like Counting Crows sounding like Deep Blue Something
. My roomate, God save his soul, bought the Deep Blue Something CD yesterday,
and they sound like Junior Gin Blossoms, they even look alike. He bought it
for the ultra-trendy, new Gen-X slacker song "Breakfast at Tiffany's." These
bands all sound the same. They seem to have this formula; a weird name that
hints at a deep cosmic truth, even stranger song titles with typically irrele-
vant lyrics that somehow aptly describe anything and everything in a tightly-
wrapped, flannel-laden, three and a half minute package, and airplay from MTV.
Why is this happening? Does anybody know? These alternateen bands are all the
same. That's why I have become such an avid Dream Theater fan. There music is
so original, both in images and words. While these alternateen bands offer an
irrelevant and mindless product, it seems like Dream Theater actually cares
enough about their craft to put out such great material. Any thoughts about
these genetically-engineered clone bands made from the Bisquick alternateen
    mix?

    Hello Ytsejam people.

Three DT shows at the end of the year. A good thing. All this talk
about meeting before and after and between shows sounds very exciting, but
pretty unorganized. So here it is: if you're going to the show in CT on the
27, send me your address. I'll collect them all and inform everyone about
all the details - how many people are going, where to meet, and when. Some
of you may have been in contact with Mike (mbradley@mail.trincoll.edu).
I've been in contact with him and we tossed around some ideas about meeting
    before the show.

First things first, though. We need a list of everyone to expect.
So e-mail me and let me know you're going.

    cool.

    long live the revolution. -matt

    Hi,

In a music shop here in Holland I noticed a CD from a band called
'Rising Power'. I don't know if any of you know this, but this is the band
Mike Portnoy used to play in before he joined Dream Theater.

I didn't buy the CD, because I didn't have any money with me (just another
poor student). If you're interested in the CD (why shouldn't you ?) just tell
me, and I'll check it out.

    Hey all,
What a fun thread. I remember this mistake when I saw DT play San
Antonio last November, and now I have it faithfully preserved thanks to
Brian Cox and his ever-present DAT recorder.

Last song of the set: TSM. James comes to "pray they won't ask..." but
accidentally sings "desperate to fall" again from the first verse. Not
realizing his mistake, he continues with "behind the great ..." and he
trails off as it hits him. So he finishes with "there's always one more
mask". Then he looks at JP and laughs (this chuckle is quite audible on
the tape), before going into the chorus.

Just wanted to share. I thought it was pretty funny at the time.
    Later,
    Adam

Yes, the visual music tests from Ben Laussade were easy for you, but
that's because BAFU AND BEN ARE ONE AND THE SAME PERSON!!!!

Yes, I've figured you out you cunning "fucking idiot". I shall show

    Ben writes : boom, be-boop, dada, goo-goo. What's that?
Bafu writes: That's easy, that's JP's hurt murmur at 3.47 into "Surrounded".
    Ben writes: You're right! Amazing!

Ben writes short stories and posts them to the jam.
Bafu writes dialogues and posts them to the jam.

Both begin with the letter "B".

Here's an idea. When telling an ethnic joke, use "player 4" instead
of the ethnic group in the joke.

    Example:

What's the difference between a player 4 and a cucumber?
        About 4 IQ points.

A player 4 and an Earthling jump out of an airplane with parachutes.
They fall a while and then the earthling pulls his string and opens
his parachute. The Player 4, however, keeps falling. The Earthling
says to the player 4, "When you gonna pull your parachute?"
Player four looks down and says, "Gonna wait a little bit"
When the player 4 is about 1000 feet high, the earthling yells
    "You gonna pull it yet?"
The player 4 responds "a little longer".
500 feet up, the earthling says "ya gotta pull your string"
The player 4 says, "Not yet".
When the player 4 is 5 feet off the ground, the earthling screams
at him, "Aren't you gonna pull it now?!"
The player four looks down and says, "Nah, I think I'll jump from
    here".

How many player 4's does it take to screw in a light bulb?
None, they just SIT there, they don't DO anything!

I must fall under the f*cking idiots classification. I, too, was at Giants
stadium this past weekend (Saturday though) watching marching bands in the
rain and high winds. It was brutal!

Well enough of my ramblings, on with the Jam!

Hey, Jodi, at least you're honest. How many other jammers will admit that
they still listen to Journey or Boston or even Prince or LIsa Lisa and the
Cult Jam or whatever? Hell, I heard the Danger Zone on the radio the other
day, the song from Top Gun, and found myself getting into it. Hell, it's
better than some of the shit you hear on mainstream radio.

Here's one! I still listen to a lot of that stuff. 80s
music fans unite! I listened to "Purple Rain" the other
day, (as my roommate left the disc out one day) and the solo
at the end is really beautiful. Prince is a great guitarist,
too bad he's mental. The TG soundtrack is awesome. Recent
soundtracks that are worthy are _Mortal Kombat_ and
            _Desparado_.

I don't think Rush qualifies; Niel Peart is not an original member.

Fave drink would have to be Celebrator Dopplebock. The best "beer" that I
    have ever tasted.

    Offensive joke of the day:

One day in suburbia, a wife was screwing another man when her husband came home.
"Quick, into the closet," she said. "Before my husband catches us!"
The guy grabs his pants and runs into the closet. After closing the door, he
hears a voice say, "Boy its dark in here."
    "Who's there?" asks the man.
"I'm Billy," said a little boy sitting there in the dark. "Do you want to
buy my great Dream Theater CD? Only $50."
"Why would I want to do that?"
"If you don't, I'll tell my dad about you and my mom, and he'll kill you."
Seeing that he had no other choice, the man gave billy the money.

The next day, the mom and the man were going at it again when her husband,
    once again, came home early.
    "Quick, into the closet!"
Once in the closet, "Boy it's dark in here!"
"So, Billy, which CD are you selling today?"
"Another Dream Theater. This one's even better. $100!"

Billy was so happy that he now had alot of money that he spread it all out
on his floor and was running his hands through it. Just then, his dad walked
in and said,"Billy. I don't know how you got that money, but I'm sure that
it wasn't honest. So, tomorrow I want you to go down to the church to confess."

So the next day, Billy walks down to the church to confess. After entering
the confessional and closing the door he said, "Boy it's dark in here."

To which the priest said, "Are you going to start that shit again?"

    hi all,

this is not a dt story...in `92 just before I came to the states we "our band" did a charity concetr. we were a small time cover band who used to do all kinds of songs from the doors to savatage. anyway we were opening with the enter sandman and that was the first time that song was played by a band back home ( now every body does it) right after I kick in the distortion padel I lookup and after couple of notes I realize there's no sound from my guitar. then I realize there are couple of people from the audiance on the stage in front of us jumping like ping pong balls!.....and then I find out one of our "fans" kicked the padel and it was lying on the other side of the stage with my side of the jack dangling loose. so what do I do??? just imagine in the middle of the stage couple of people jumping around and a guy with a guitar kneeling and trying to find something:) man it was one of the scariest (then) and the funniest(now) moment of my life. thank God my partners played on and I think half the audience did not understand what was happening because of the ping pong balls in front of me ;)

for dt mistake....I think at the biginning of pmu on the latm when john is doingthe acustic thing he hits two strings at the same time instead of one once. another thing ...after I heard james singing songs from the first album though I like james' voice but I think I disliked the other vocalists (sorry can't remember his name is it chris ?) because of the production/ sound quality of the first album. any thoughts ???

sorry for the long post have a good one

============================================================================ DISCLAIMER: These recordings fall into a grey area of law as an uncopyrighted recording produced in such a manner that at least one facet of the production occurs in a country (namely Italy) in which it is legal to do so. In the USA, it is permissible to sell used import CDs only if they are labeled as such. This is such a CD. Be aware that the various powers-that-be are collecting nothing for this. ============================================================================

Of course, that's all cover-my-butt lawyerspeak. I hope you all will want to be a part of this. I make roughly minimum wage doing it, so you know I'm not out to scam you. In all humility, I appeal to anyone who might not think too kindly of my endeavor, and ask that they might give me the benefit of the doubt on this one. Friends? :)

    1. What is Cygnus? 2. What is When Dream And Today Unite? 3. What is Antiquities? 4. What is the release schedule? 5. How can I get my own copy of one of these CDs? 6. Orders received for Acoustic Dreams and When Dream and Today Unite. ============================================================================

    1. What is Cygnus?

Hi all! Allow me to introduce myself, if you aren't familiar with me yet. I'm Mike Bahr, humble maker of special-edition CDs. I noticed a lot of the mass-manufactured bootleg offerings were spiralling quite high in price and yet offered little for the die-hard fan, and I concocted a scheme by which I could make around minimum wage by producing CDs on my own, CDs that would fill the demand for REAL rarities and special songs, unreleased items, live shows, and the like.

Basically, since no CD plant will print them for me, I have to rent studio and equipment time and do it myself. So far, it's working. :)

Fortunately, and for this I am very relieved, my Subconscious CD has been incredibly well-received by the net community, especially the Ytsejam mailing list. I just do what I can do and leave the rest up to God, and I guess the Almighty isn't disappointing you folks. People from all walks of life, all countries of the world, both sexes, all races, and all religions have joined in on the limited edition CD projects, and I am very happy to have you all along for the ride. I'll keep making CDs as long as you folks are willing to keep buying them. Thanks so _very_ much... :)

And now, I do have copies of Rush "Cygnus" CD remaining. There are not many. I implore you to get one now before they're gone, if you're a Rush fan and want this collector's item CD.

It is a Rush recording from the mystical Hemispheres tour of 1978. I still have some copies available. It was recorded from a soundboard reel and the quality is comparable to that of Electric Ladyland '74. It's full stereo and the bass and vocals are very clear, the effects very defined, but the drum sound has heard better days. It's still better than 99% of all the Rush shows on tape, I can attest to that specifically. :)

    Track listing:

    1. Anthem 2. A Passage to Bangkok 3. By-Tor and the Snow Dog -> i. At the Tobes of Hades ii. Across the Styx iii. Of the Battle 4. Xanadu 5. Something For Nothing (glitch at end, missing nearly nothing) 6. The Trees 7. Cygnus X-1 (dropout at end, missing last 16 secs before bells) 8. Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres i. Prelude ii. Apollo iii. Dionysus iv. Armageddon (dropout at end, missing ~40 secs of closing) v. Cygnus vi. The Sphere 9. Circumstances 10. A Farewell to Kings

The dropouts aren't a big deal really, but in the interest of honesty I am pointing them out. They were on the master reel. Also, like Subconscious and Acoustic Dreams, this CD does not bear the name "Rush". It says "Cygnus" on the label and lists cover credits. Don't be fooled; it's Rush, just like the others are DT. It's for legal reasons. Before Italy started making boots in 1991, all US vinyl boots were the same way.

    2. What is When Dream and Today Unite?

This work, still in production, contains all the songs from When Dream and Day Unite, only performed live with James LaBrie at the helm. It should be released around Christmas. Here's the tracklisting:

    1. A Fortune In Lies 2. Status Seeker 3. Ytsejam 4. Another Hand/The Killing Hand 5. Light Fuse and Get Away 6. Mission Impossible 7. Afterlife 8. The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun 9. Only A Matter Of Time 10. March of the Tyrant 11. To Live Forever 12. Moon Bubbles

I've already begun accepting early orders for this, if you don't mind the wait. The details on ordering are below.

All the performances from this, as many as could be, are from original performances not common on bootlegs. I did not use Live at the Marquee, Dance of Eternity, Lost in the Sky, or others like them, except that Status Seeker was only available in good quality on Dream Out Loud.

I'm currently in the process of creating the CDs themselves. They will get sent for printing, emulsion inks, packaging, and liner printing at the end of November, setting me up for a Christmas release. The CD printing plants are a bit overbooked just now because of the spring release schedules, so this might take a little longer... but I expect no undue problems. After all, somehow, Acoustic Dreams made it out on schedule, hard as it was.

    3. What is Antiquities?

This one is just now taking shape from being a primordial ooze of proteins and algae into a finished, gleaming, streamlined CD. I'll have more details on it here as it gets developed. The master tapes are already being prepared to be made into a single master, and I've got an artist hard at work on the cover, as well as contracting for CD plant pressing time. Man, it sucks to have to do stuff this far in advance to get a CD out on time! :)

So far, loosely slated for inclusion are:

. A Change of Seasons with Chris Cintron on vocals, demo . The remaining (not already released by me) vocalist auditions . The outtakes from Live at the Marquee (Glass Moon, Ytsejam) . A handful of errata, extra stuff, weird edits, and the like.

    4. What is the release schedule?

Here is the current schedule of releases as I see it (all dates estimated):

NOW - Rush: "Cygnus" released/shipping NOW - Dream Theater: "When Dream and Today Unite" ordering begins 12/15/1995 - Dream Theater: "Antiquities" ordering begins (TENTATIVE) 12/25/1995 - Dream Theater: "When Dream and Today Unite" released/shipping 01/15/1996 - Rush: "Legends" ordering begins 02/01/1996 - Dream Theater: "Scenes From a Memory" ordering begins 02/15/1996 - Public Affection: "Death of a Dictionary" ordering begins 02/15/1996 - Dream Theater: "Antiquities" released/shipping 02/30/1996 - Rush: "Legends" released/shipping 03/17/1996 - Dream Theater: "Scenes From a Memory" released/shipping 03/30/1996 - Public Affection: "Death of a Dictionary" released/shipping 04/--/1996 - Live or Type O-Negative: To be announced 05/--/1996 - Dream Theater: To be announced

Here are a few descriptions to keep your curiosity satiated :)

Dream Theater "Subconscious" Released 04/03/1995 - Limited Edition - 500 copies - sold out Contained Dream Theater rarities including A Change of Seasons. All copies were hand initialed/numbered in gold for authenticity. Rush "Cygnus" Released 08/14/1995 - Limited Edition - 1000 copies - still available Contains a rare soundboard show from the Hemispheres tour. Dream Theater "Acoustic Dreams" Released 09/30/1995 - Limited Edition of 500 copies - sold out Each copy is hand signed/numbered in silver for authenticity. Contains beautiful unplugged performances. Dream Theater "When Dream and Today Unite" To be released 12/25/1995 - Limited print of either 500 or 1000. Contains the songs from Dream and Day only with James LaBrie on vocals. Collected from MANY sources and optimized for quality. Dream Theater "Antiquities" To be released 02/15/1996 - Limited print of either 500 or 1000. Each copy will be hand signed/numbered for authenticity. Will contain vocalist auditions, demos, errata, outtakes, unfinished works, unreleased tracks, and the like. Rush "Legends" Details TBA - Limited print of 500 copies, MIGHT be 2CD set. Each copy will probably be authenticated. Contains a SOUNDBOARD SHOW FROM THE COUNTERPARTS TOUR! YEAH! Dream Theater "Scenes From a Memory" Details TBA - Limited print of 500 copies. Each copy will be hand signed/numbered for authenticity. This could wind up being any of four or five different shows or song collections, as there are a few soundboard tapes I'm working on to try and get a good sound out of them. Public Affection "The Death of a Dictionary" Details TBA - Unlimited print Is actually +Live+'s little-known first album, released in 1989, two years before their 1991 breakthrough Mental Jewelry. Demand for this one is skyrocketing, and the Jam gets first shot at it. The only thing stopping it right at the moment is the overwhelming demand for the DT discs and the lack of manpower on my end. This *will* be released before too much longer.

The following are all "Work in Progress" releases... Rush "A Symptom of Life" - from 12/20/81 2nd gen soundboard Contains a LOT of neat stuff. a LOT. But very long... 2 CD set? Rush "Concordant Crossroads" - from 3/24/81 audience MASTER in stereo This one has unbelievable good sound quality. It's a tossup whether to take this or Symptom, since both are so good but so similar. Rush "The Age of Wonders" - from a remastered 6/25/75 Toronto This tour has been very underrepresented in available material, so who knows, if S.H.'s cleanup efforts turn out good... +Live+ "Disenchanting Discourse" - from a 10/25/94 audience MASTER in stereo It might be released, it might not, depending on many things. If you would like to see it released, please let me know and let as many people know as you can. I tend to find ways to release things when I find an overwhelming demand for them. :) I also have an audience DAT from 8/8/95, which is pretty damn good. I may synthesize the two shows to get all the "Rare" songs onto the CD. (Freaks, Supernatural, Breakin' Up, Jewelry songs, etc.) Type O-Negative "Deathgrip" - from a 5/30/94 audience MASTER in stereo A great setlist and decent sound. Only my worries about how many copies I can sell prevent this. I can't undertake anything less than a potential sellout project or I risk going under. Again, if this is a title you'd like to see, you can make it happen. All I need is a lot of interest, and away we go! So far I've had a few positive replies... much much more are needed though. Dream Theater... oh who knows, there's so much good stuff.

    5. How can I order a copy of one of these CDs?

As stated before, I'm already shipping the CDs by and by. I ship orders in the order I received your checks, so those of you who sent your mail around when ordering began, those will be the first CDs out the door. I usually get a couple dozen a day into the mail. Be sure to correct this against the release schedule... e.g. I'm caught up on Cygnus so those will turn around fast. Acoustic Dreams is still in a queue and I'm crankin those out as fast as possible. WDATU is still in pre-order and won't ship until the end of December anyhow.

Feel free to e-mail me to reserve a copy for you, so that your mail will have a copy allocated to it already (and not be a victim of "no-more- disc-syndrome").

The numbering, excepting special requests when possible, will fill in the order I receive the mail orders. It's only fair after all. I'll reserve a copy for someone over e-mail, but if thirty people get their orders in before he or she does, it's not fair for me to still hold copy #014 or whatever. You all get the idea... these decisions are just in the effort to make it fair for all.

Note: Cygnus was not numbered, nor will Public Affection be. All others so far are numbered for authenticity.

Please, I stress to all of you, don't miss these if you missed Subconscious and Acoustic Dreams. It really does pain me to have to tell a fellow DT fan that there simply aren't any more Sub discs to be had, especially because I would be MORE than glad to sell one if I had it.

The pricing for all the CDs so far is as follows ($2 discount for Cygnus if you're on the Jam.)

Base cost: $25.00 US Additional postage USA free Additional postage Canada / Mex $1.00 US Additional postage Scandinavia $3.00 US * Additional postage Europe / UK $4.00 US Additional postage Japan $5.00 US Additional postage Aus/NZ/etc. $5.00 US

    * Scandinavia includes Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark. For some reason postal rates are lower than for mainland Europe or the UK.

Postal rates were changed, but the postage cost MUST ONLY BE PAID ONCE. If you live in Europe and you order 4 discs, the cost is $104.00 US ($25.00 x 4, plus $4.00 postage) and not $116.00 US. Thus, if you have friends who want copies, I am more than willing to help you out. :) So no matter how many CDs you want, only add the postage cost Once.

Things are pretty simple from here. Send along a money order for $25 bucks to my address, being sure to include a note with your name, the address to ship to, your email address, and WHICH CDs you're ordering so I know which ones to send you...... and HOW MANY you're ordering. As before, international customers may use whatever means of payment is most convenient for them, though I stress that sending cash is risky and should not be a first option, but a backup plan. :) CHECKS: I don't really mind them, but in the effort to be seen as a serious and responsible net merchant, I always recommend the traceable-both-ways Money Order as a preferred form of payment. So while checks are perfectly OK, they may or may not be the option you choose to take.

Please make out checks and money orders to me, Michael Bahr.

The address and so on is me at:

Prototypes: Sean Brady, Neil Elliott, [please mail me if you have a special prototype copy. You'll know if you do.]

Information: The orders for Kaoru and Stephane are being bought as a group order for others in their home country, not a huge order to keep for later. So those of you who may have missed out, don't misunderstand and think that I was letting people buy out all the copies and keep them from the rest of the fans... quite the opposite: Kaoru and Stephane got copies to people who didn't have a chance to order it themselves, or when it was too costly.

When Dream and Today Unite orders received: (I'm still trying to get this right. Mention it to me if I biffed.)
