I don't necessarily want to take up for the current incarnation of KC (and
I missed Conan), but I have found that Crimson really takes a few listens
to get into. I recently bought _Discipline_, and I thought it sucked
initially. But it has really grown on me (God help me, I even hum the
intro to "Elephant Talk!"). So don't slag them based on one listen. They've
been around a long time and are one of the pillars of Prog. Some would even
call them the first prog-metal band.

Just my $.02. Sorry, no DT content (so sue me!).

oh my!! they did play heart of the sunrise and innocence faded!!! yay!!!!!
and 6:00! of course, the one time i get to see them, they play none of these.
my luck, they'll not play them again in ct or ny, and then they'll explode in
    nj!! rats!

speaking of japan and dt, in summer of 94 i was there, and i took a day long
trip to osaka, and i walked into the hard rock cafe there. it was actually
kinda cheesy, but as i'm walking out, i'm looking at the photos, and i see
these 4 long haired dudes, and a small sign sign on the bottom in japanese
that says "dream theater." i took a good long look this time and i saw myung
(can't miss him), jp, portnoy (anyone remember the bloom county character
named portnoy?), and james. no kevin?? i found that interesting.

portnoy does sam ash....wow....if he's doing sam ash in queens or carle place
around thanksgiving break.....mmm mmm mmm. anyone who finds this bit of info
    out please let us know.

    Hey guys!

As you all have probably heard, Matt Sirois and I have been
communicating about a gathering before the El 'n Gee show. Also, Trey Allen
has expressed an interest in forming a large YTSECON either before the El
'n Gee show or before one of the others. This will probably depend on the
availability of meeting places at selected locations.
Within the next 2 weeks, probably late this week, I'm driving down
to New London to scope out potential meeting places. We'll keep you
FREQUENTLY updated, so read those jams!
Anyone interested in meeting other Jammers at some sort of
gathering, which might include special guests, should e-mail Matt. A list
is being tabulated and is growing daily. Matt's address is:

                             Matthew Sirois <ms014e@uhura.cc.rochester.edu>

We want any meeting of Jammers to KICK, so send any great ideas to
    Matt also. Stay tuned, guys!

First, 'the corpse', Robert Fripp does play guitar (not rhythm guitar),
and does not need to jump around to show emotion. He does that perfectly
well through his playing. Go watch Green Day for jumping, slopping around!

The bass-player (note the spelling), I guess that would be Tony Levin
since Trey Gunn plays the Chapman Stick exclusively, does not need
a visa for dressing funny. Watch me when I'm doing a bass-solo in my
    1800th century outfit, I rule!!! I am Cornholio!!! I not need hall-pass!!!

Well, we have ALL listened to it for about two months! Dammit, if you're
new to this list, shut up for a while and absorb the current topics
before you voice your exceptionally dumb opinions!

And HELL NO, you're not going to dub it and you're definately not going to
charge anything for what I just told you not to do! We might have to
send out a special squad to deal with you! BTW, ACOS is not a rarity at
    all, OBVIOUSLY!!!

Dubbing of an official release is a violation of the rights of the
artist to their art. That's already a crime! To charge money for illegal
    dubbing is twice as bad!

Well, wait a minute, this MUST be a joke, no one's this stupid!?!

FYI: It was probably the song Dinosaur from their latest album THRAK. It's an excellent song with both extraordinary musical performances, geniously crafted (somewhat self-reflecting) lyrics and a big, fucking fat groove. I can't think of any defendable criticism of neither the song, their actual performance or the band itself.

    Hi there,

Neil asked: >Now for a minimal bit of DT content. So far no responses to my question: what >song/track would you most like DT to cover? Think it over and let me know [..] I wish they'd record a cover of Russ Ballard's "Searching" from the "Fire still burns" album (1985 I guess). I loved that song immediately back then and I wore my LP out just because of this track. It features lots of keyboards, great drum parts, some guitars and great harmonies for the lyrics. All in all I think it would fit DT like a glove.. well at least if they'd through in some heavy jammin' in the middle part :-)

On another thread: Bands with at least five albums, still the same musicians etc. There is of course to mention: Black Sabbath not! But seriously: Tesla and ZZTop (I guess they got the record)

and finally: >[..] Well, obviously, my all-time favourite drink has to be the >one that I don't pay for myself!! No, seriously, living in Germany, [..] Yessss! Bavarian beer rules! (right Paul?) In case I'm in the mood for some heavier stuff, I prefer Absolut Vodka or Stolchi, straight or on the rocks. I just can't understand the thing about Jagermeister - it's mainly a medicine for stomach indigestion...

Well, not King Crimson. For one thing, the lead singer wasn't always with him, and Greg Lake played for them back in the sixties! Y'know, from Emerson, LAKE, and Palmer?

Hello there. Does anyone know where I can get hold of keyboard music for any DT songs? While I have managed to find numerous guitar tabs, I have never found any keyboard stuff. It is one of my ambitions to be able to play "Take The Time." Thanks a lot, Jim the funky Beer Monster.

And maybe, just for kicks, they do "Headed for a >Heartbreak" by the illustrious Winger, like I said, just for kicks.

Hell yeah!! Never head the ELP version of "Mars". but that would be awesome to hear DT cover Holst's song. I LOVE that one. It's even in 5/4. I love hearing classical music on guitar, bass drums, keys. Like whe Savatage does "The Carol of the Bells" on DWD. Awesome.

What part, exactly, of Metallica's "One" was put into Learning to Live at one of the Japan concerts? Also, what is Derek doing while they play Damage Inc.?

I don't really think that Dream theater is a band you can mosh to, at least I hope not. I think DT is above the metal bands that seem to bring forth the mindless moshing that goes on at some concerts. Yes, I don't understand how people beating the shit out of one another is a cool thing.

i can remember distinctly the Balt. show at Pier 6 James said TLF was a brand new song that they had written/been working on while touring. my friends et moi said "kool!" and we enjoyed the song...

then i find out a year later that TLF has been around since the dark ages and is older than dirt. oh well, i still like it. and remember: life is not fair ;)

i'd be nice if echolyn opened for DT in NJ :)

I did? Maybe I was drunk at the time... it's amazing what a maximum of three sips of beer approximately every two weeks (and never before a concert, only after, if at all) will do to one's memory... <G> (I make no sense when I'm sober, I don't even want to know what I say when I'm drunk!)

    Hey guys!

I was also at the New Haven, CT show when DT fucked up the intro to "Another Day." I was little shocked to see the guys stop and restart a song, but they did. To correct the earlier post on this, James said "I don't fuckin' think so!" Then he said something to the effect of "All you news people out there are gonna go and write, 'They fucked up!'" I think Petrucci's guitar fucked up. I have a very clear tape of this show and the buzzing that starts at the mess up sounds like a wireless when the battery is dead, and I think JP switched guitars before they restarted. In the same show, "The Silent Man" was screwed up, because Myung hadn't quite learned the rhythm guitar part behind the solo. All in all I was a little disappointed with this show. I'd like a soundboard tape of this show. My friends and I were in the front row and when they stopped "Another Day" my friend screamed, "PORTNOY NEVER FUCKS UP!!!!" James was near us, so it might have come out on the soundboard tape...like the guy on LatM. DT still rules, though. Later guys!!

Remember that one of the qualifications was that the band must still be actively recording or touring, so...

    > From: hiw100@psu.edu (Cornholio) > > On that pole about bands being together for more than five albums etc, New > Kids on the Block qualify. So do the Four Tops and the Temptations and > Smokey and the Miracles.

..are not right answers (unless the Four Tops and Smokey and the Miracles are still doing those lounge acts). Sorry, bud.

    > From: eiagm@eznet.net > Subject: Re: Trivia Quiz Answers > > > Primus, R.E.M., E.L.P., King's X, U2 > > How could ELP be right? I believe those initials have stood for > Emerson, Lake, and Palmer AND for Emerson, Lake, and Powell, so

Yeah, yeah. I should have writtem out "Emerson, Lake, and Palmer." :)

    > Also, how do you count solo artists like Tom Petty or Bryan adams. > What about Simon and Garfunkel (not that they are touring these > days), or the Indigo Girls?

Well, as you said, S&G don't count. As for the others, let's take a look. Tom Petty has only released one album to my knowledge, so he doesn't count. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have changed lineups at least once, so they don't count. Bryan Adams might be a valid answer. I don't have all his stuff, so I don't know if that band has always been the same, but something tells me that that's an OK answer, too. As far as the Indigo Girls, I get the impression that the band consists of those two, and they just keep hiring studio musicians. If that's the case, then they count. If the bassist, drummer, etc. are considered part of the band, then proabbly not. Better?
