Firstly, I really wouldn't worry about prog becoming the mass produced
music that grunge is. Let's face it. Not everyone can play prog music. Your
average garage band will choke. Prog can only be done by people who have been
trained to play their instrument or by people with an amazing gift for their
instruments. Sorry, but the average musician cannnot even relate to prog let
    alone imitate it.

And as far as moshing goes, I just have to ask this. Since I am going to
the birch Hill NJ show and I am blind and all, do I have to worry about being
thrashed at the show? I would probably have to reconsider going if I can't be
positive that I won't get hurt. Especially when you can't see to move out of
the way of moshers. Mosh if you want, but don't involve me. Especially when
have no idea what is happening until it's too late.

Designate a place for moshing. Fine with me. While I don't support or
understand moshing, I tolerate and accept it.

Just to inform you guys that there is a 2112 type band out here in the
NY/Nj area called Power Windows. They do almost everything, the singer sounds
a lot like Geddy. downers? Four pieces as opposed to three. But who cares.
All great musicians. Check them out if you love Rush. And if you know who
they are and have a list of their dates, send them to me. Thought I was on
the list, but I guess not.

Well, in addition to my keyboarding abilities, I can sing, too. Some
musicians who play an instrument and can sing may not mention their vocal
abilities in addition to their musical ones. Guitarists can also sing. Bass
people can also sing. Hell, some drummers can sing too, and I give you guys a
lot of credit because drumming and singing at the same time is a bitch, I'm
    sure.

Hello Jammers! I know I dont write in much. But I just came from a local club and heard HARPO. I live in Northeastern Penn. and HARPO has been around here well forever. They are one of the best bands in the area. Tonight they play all the songs from the soon to be released HARPO Disc. So as I was sitting there jammin' I couldn't help but notice the DT like feel they had going. After the Greatest set I have ever heard them play <I've seen them for the last 6 years> I had to know! I went up and talked to the drummer. I asked where the feel for the new CD came from. I also pointed out that it had a DT feel to it. He told me that the guitar player and himself have been listening to DT alot lately. So he told me that they got to meet DT and they exchanged CDs and shirts and all that stuff. I told him about the NY and NJ shows coming up and they are comeing to the NY show with me.

I love the fact that a band in my area is now going into the same feel. When the new Disc comes out I will let everybody know. If any one would like to get a copy I would be glad to get it to them. They have other CDs but I am not sure what I can get a hold of I will see what is avalible and list them I will send out to anyone interested. You just have to pay for the CD and S&H. Well dont want to go on forever so I will talk to you all later.

Um...nice subject line. Now you've made me feel all insecure and stuff! <G>

    > Paul (sorry, dunno last name) was wrong about at least one of the females

No one else on this list knows my last name, either (I've never posted it). Well, maybe two or three people know.

    > who contributed to Mike's survey. Just because one doesn't post often > doesn't mean they don't care :)

Well, I never said they don't CARE. I'm just surprised that only FOUR women responded to the poll. I was trying to guess who they were based on who I've seen. Obviously, I couldn't guess a lurker. <G> I'm glad you stepped out of the shadows.

    [Snipped a bit]

    > BTW, Helloween's "Keeper of the Seven Keys" Parts one and two are not > concept albums. Only the songs "Halloween" and "Keeper..." are remotely > conceptual.

They just SEEM like concept albums to me. I always thought the songs had SOME connection.

    > Also, only the song "2112" is conceptual, not the entire album. I think > Fates Warning's "The Spectre Within" and "Awaken the Guardian" should be on > the list. Why were they overlooked, considering the number of Fates fans > on this mailing list?

I believe Mike B. said that if at least half of the album is conceptual, it's eligable. 2112 takes up about half of the CD. Still, I agree that the entire album isn't conceptual. Hemispheres is much like 2112.

I now turn my attention to another lovely lady: > Date: Sat, 18 Nov 1995 22:32:10 -0500 > From: JennieBear@aol.com > Subject: Survey results... > > The following appeared in Ytsejam #1140: > > >Only four women? Well, I know for sure that one was Debbie. <G> And I forgot about Jaime. Maybe I just hadn't seen enough of her.

Ben said... >YES, but there WAS a time before Hit the Lights. The first four members of >Metallica were: >James Hetfield >Lars Ulrich >Ron McGovney >Lloyd Grant

Nah, buzz, wrong, sorry. Heheh :). There was no time before Hit the Lights. Lars hadn't gotten a band together when he was offered by Brain Slagel to perform on his compilation called Metal Massacre. Lars got in touch with James who he had already seen once, and they stole the name MEtallica from a guy named Ron Quintana, and wrote Hit the Lights. It was recorded on a shitty four track and James played guitars, bass, and sung, and LArs played drums. They then found Mustaine who recorded a lead guitar break, but they decided they needed another lead and Mustaine wasn't available so they had Lloyd Grant play. Grant was never actually part of the band, he just appeared on the one song. Eventually the newer version of Metal Massacre came out, and it had a new demo version of Hit The Lights with Mustaine playing BOTH leads. Anyways after that when they played in clubs it was

Mustaine-Lead guitar Hetfield-just vocals for a while, eventually took up guitar Ulrich-drums Mcgovney-bass

that should end this discussion =-]

Hello, it's me - BABS. I have a question to pose:

Just how many of us females are on the list? Here are the people that I have been in touch with:

    AirDance (Jennifer), Jaime, Kinga, JennieBear.

Here are the people that I have seen post to the list on occasion:

Jodi, Patricia, Michelle Garcia, Kaoru (I sure hope that I didn't misspell that, but something tells me that I did. I apologize)

Perhaps the Master of the Ytsejam, Ken Bibb, could give us an exact count (hint, hint).

    Hello,

I kinda remember reading something in the paper over the summer that said Bostons first album overtook Thriller for best selling album. Could be wrong, who knows.

And Souls at Zero (formerly Wrathchild America) are not really a industrial/punk band. I think they're a good band. Never seen them live though. They play in the D.C. / Baltimore area alot if I'm not mistaken.

    Anyway, have a nice day.

p.s. Since the subject of 80's "Hair Metal" came up, I thought I'd tell you that I saw Firehouse last night. (Don't laugh, and Yes I paid to see them) They rocked! I was impressed. It was their last show of the tour. BTW, I had to see them 'cause I was supposed to see them back in '90, or around there, when they were touring with Warrant and Trixter (Again, don't laugh)

That is about the dumbest thing I've ever heard, comparing Dream Theater concerts to symphonys. If a band is going to play hard core shit than they should expect moshing. I know not every song by DT is hard core and I'm not saying all their songs should be moshed to but a lot of their stuff is as heavy as good ol' classic Bay Area thrash so they should expect mosh pits at their concerts. Hi all,

the sun is shining, the air is fresh and clear, children are playing outside... and I'm sitting here working (or trying to, at least: I hate it, I hate it).

Right, I seem to have caused some confusion with my question about the best- selling record of all time. Perhaps I should have specified 'the best-selling single' of all time - not that it makes any difference to the results. Lots of you said 'Dark Side of the Moon' or 'Thriller'. Sorry, but wrong. The right answer, which was sent in by Paul Cashman is of course (drum roll held under)

    - White Christmas by Bing Crosby, which has sold 205,000,000 copies to date.

Are we all participating in Mike Bahr's epic song/concept album poll? Like some other Jammers out there, I thought there were a couple of glaring ommissions in his list (Quadrophenia, Tommy, The Lamb Lies Down etc.), but the biggest ommission of all was of the world's longest concept piece ever: Wagner's 'The Ring of the Niebelungen'. I've got a complete copy on video, but I've never managed to watch it all in a single session yet: somewhere around 14 hours all together. That guy wrote heavy metal operas. (I was prompted to write this by the person who said they would like to hear DT play the 'Ride of the Valkuries.)

*DT content*: the latest edition of the German music magazine Metal Hammer has listed WDADU as one of the '100 masterpieces of metal' The other albums from 89 include Skid Row (Skid Row), Alice Cooper (Trash), Aerosmith (Pump), Faith No More (The Real Thing), Soundgarden (Louder Than Love), Motley Crue (Dr. Feelgood) and Danzig (Danzig). Something there for everybody, I think.

What is this 2112 thing by Rush that everybody is talking about? Is it a cover of the 1812 by Tchaikovsky? Am I slowly loosing my grip on reality? (Bafu, send me some of your tablets).

stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de)

I was watching LiT and JP makes TWO mistakes during TTT. One is right before the keyboard solo right AFTER the jam session, and the other is on the run leading up to the chorus after the jam session.

    Questions:

What the hell is Kevin doing on the side of the keyboard? I always knew he had a pitch bend, but I don't think that's what it is. And also, why does he tilt it?

Also, about Mike's drum solo. In alot of spots (for one, the part right after the Pantera thing....) he does this thing with the toms and the bass drums. It's really smooth, like a roll, but I'm pretty sure it's single stroke. And the kick drums are in there. What is he doing there? I can't for the life of me figure it out.

The room was LOCKED. I could not get in, nor could I send a message to whoever was in there because I couldn't /who #ytsejam. I was trying to get in for quite a while, when I finally gave up. I came back about thirty minutes later, and people were in there as if nothing had happened.

Obviously neither of you guys were there for the hour+ that Ben and I were in there. I can get about four other people to be my witnesses. Yes, folks, that makes a total of six, which I was told is a new record.

That's what I was talking about. I couldn't get in. I don't know how you guys got in there in the first place.

I'm tempted to say it's from Metallica's "One," before the guitar starts up in the beginning, when the soldiers are getting fired upon and screaming to each other.

Actually, I wrote a paragraph of God quotes, then Ben wrote a few. But feel free to do the same. Kudos to anyone who can name all of the ones in my post. :)

    "I feel like I'm someone's dinner entertainment."

I can see this phrase being immortalized along with "Balls and chunk is where it's at!" :) I wonder what would have happened if someone had asked Portnoy during the q&a, "Mr. Portnoy, when you do your live solos, do you ever find yourself thinking, "oh yeah, I'm certain ay FOUNDITSA CAUDAP WIMAAAAAY!!!" ?"

That lie.mov file on the DT official site does not work on a mac either. Up until someone posted saying it didn't work on PCs I assumed it didn't work on macs. Maybe it just works on Suns????

Has anyone gotten this file to work?

Will Al Balkewicz ever send me the tapes he has owed me for 9 months??????

    Hey Jammers,

I got my ytse jam t-shirt from Jason Giles on Friday. It's awesome, but I was kinda worried, because I had a dream in which I got it and it was real ugly: white with red print instead of black with white print. But enough of that....

Whoah, Mike Portnoy did a drum clinic in Toronto? Why didn't anybody post about this BEFORE IT OCCURRED?!? And James just happened to be there too! Damn, I hate missing out on opportunities like that.

Sometimes if I have some spare time, I try to figure out how to play some Dream Theater songs on the keyboard, but there's some stuff I'd like to learn that I don't even want to begin to try to figure out on my own. What I want to know is if there is some sort of accepted standard for typing out music for keyboard. I know that guitarists use tab, what about keys?

I went to a collectible record and CD show yesterday, looking for any DT stuff I don't have: singles, WDADU, bootlegs and stuff, but the only thing I found was a video copy of "Awake in Japan" from the Jan. 24/95 concert. It's pretty cool, but I was kinda pissed that I didn't see anything else at all. Anyway, is there somewhere where I can get a transcription of everything that is being said in Japanese on the video?

I hope this has not been responded to yet, I am going through the letters one by one and saw this and practically leapt out of my chair.

_The Crow_...this is the scene where the late Mr. Draven is telling Delia's mother -- as he squeezes the recently injected heroin out of her body -- that she must pay more attention to her daughter. Right after this he does a real doozy on FunBoy by injecting all of his needles of heroin into his chest. Cool. BTW, if you haven't seen _The Crow_, go see it. It is awesome. The lighting is great, the F/X aren't too shabby, and the score by Graeme Revell is captivating.

I think this was Graham: << > i heard the new paradise lost album, "draconian times," was supposed to > be out by now. did it get postponed? i can't find it anywhere. someone > please help me! (sorry no d.t. content - hey, there was some right there!)

It's been out for a couple of months now, and it's amazing! >>

A slight correction: it's been out in *Europe* for a couple of months, but I don't think it's hit the stores in the States yet - it should be soon, though, probably this month or next. I got a dub from a friend in Finland, and I don't like it quite as much as I like _Icon_, but that never stops me from cranking "Elusive Cure" all the way up...

Scott Hansen: << Oh and before I forget, Jaime (Miss Dragon), I just got my copy of Metropolis Watch - thanx and hopefully - no guarantees - I'll write an article next time about (what else) bootlegs! >>

Well thankee very much. <BG> Anyone else??? (hopeful grin) I'm going to start harassing for contributions well ahead of time this time around...

<< Only four women? Okay, lemmee guess who they were:

    Jodi, Patricia, Jenniebear, Babs >>

Well, since *I* was one of the four, one of the above is incorrect. <G>

Bafu: << The musicians with substance in that genre had stopped "appearing," and were being replaced with dozens of bands who thought they could do the same thing just as easily. Some would call this event an "oversaturation of the market," but nevertheless, people were getting bombarded on all sides. And thus the genre began to die.>>

'E's got a bloody point, there... (damn - been around my British roomie too long again!) I still listen to some of the 80s "commercial" rock bands - those that managed to maintain a sense of orginality in the face of a slew of poor mimics.

JennieBear: << Anyhow, maybe the fourth was Jaime?? >>

Well, now we know which of the above for *didn't* respond! <G>

(name forgotten...) << My question is, is Savatage a Christian band??? I mean, one of the first songs, "Jesus Saves" is basically about a guy named DT Jesus selling drugs to people, thereby "Saving" them from their realities. But look at the damn title of the song! Obviously we have some parallel meanings going on here! >>

    One word. Sarcasm. :)

(and this one as well) << "I see children with butterflies trapped inside jars Just girls and boys with real life toys I want to teach them to set them free And if it comes back it was meant to be"

Is from The Last Things, "After....Birth." Very interesting, if a little unpolished, progmetal. >>

Funny you should mention them - I reviewed the CD for the fanzine. Unpolished indeed, but they have some potential... I really liked "Morgan's Song", despite the really cheesy lyrics.

Jaime the Dragon, who will now shut up, finally...
