I never said that everyone can play and sing. To do botgh takes practice
and coordination. Some people have developed it, others have not. Some may
never develope it. For those with only the givft of playing, that's all
right. but if anyone has a good voice and can play an instrument and wants to
do it, I would encourage you to learn how to sing and play simultaneously. It
will add a whole new dimension to your playing, and will make for great
harmonizing in any band you hook up with.

    Just a quick question.
I just saw the Silent Man single at a store but wasn't sure if it was
worth shelling out $9.99 for. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if
it was worth getting for the "demo" version of "Take the Time" and the
    unreleased song "Eve".
            Thanks for any help,
Keep up the good work on this list,

More Megadeth, "Countdown to Extinction" the SONG this time.

    >"Bass solo, take 1"

Cliff Burton/Metallica "Anethesia:Pulling Teeth" on Kill 'Em All

    >"1, 2...1,2,3,4,5"

Well even though this is from about every garage band in the universe, since
everything else here is Metallica I'll say either "The Unforgiven" demo or
"Breadfan" (originally done by Budgie) on the B-side of Eye of the Beholder
    single.

    >"No shit" or "That's it" (I can't tell)

This is all over the place on Live Shit from Metallica. Can't remember
    specifically.

Well, if you have "Frayed Ends of Metal" then you have the wrong book. A
much better book is by KJ Doughton. It's called "Metallica Unbound". He's
been associated with the band since the beginning when he got their first
demo. Also, there are SPECIFIC quotes from James saying that Lloyd Grant was
never actually a member, and just played on Hit the Lights. One was..

"Lloyd could play some awesome solo's, but his rhythm playing is not very
    tight."

I really reccomend you get this, it's got really awesome photos of the bands
early days. The Lloyd thing is also explained in the Metallica FAQ put out
by the Metallica Club (fanclub). It also explains how the band met and there
are lots of old re-prints of Bay Area Metal-zines from the early days. I
love it. If you want I'll send it to you.

    >Okay. You forced me to do it.
    >SONGS I THINK DT SHOULD COVER:
    >METALLICA:
    >"The Call of Ktulu". They could jam on this forever, and probably make some
    >better solos. But James would get bored fast.
    >"Orion". Well, same reasons.
    >"To Live is to Die". Geez. James is gonna take a REALLY long break.
    >"One". HELL YEAH!!!!
    >"Fade to Black" I would love to hear this one.

Well, even though all those songs have dual guitar parts, and no keyboards,
who CARES! And remember Ben, anybody who says you listen to Metallica too
much, doesn't listen to Metallica enough! :) woohoo

Oh, and since those DT concerts in Japan had them covering "Damage Inc.",
does anybody know how James covered the OTHER James (Hetfield). Concidering
their different vocal styles, and I've never heard James L. get that
aggresive, I think it would be interesting. Bye now

Does anyone think that DT could be done by an orchestra?

The reason that I was wondering was because I just picked up the new
Jimi Hendrix tribute album and the London Symphony Orchestra play on
almost every song, as do a bunch of big name rockers....

Some big names that I can think of:Steve Vai, Doug Pinnick (from KING'S X),
Brian May, Carlos Santana, Cory Glover (Living Color), and others...

I think it is a great album.

Will AL BALKEWICZ ever mail me the videos he has owed me for over 9 months????

    Ben,

I think I know which bit of Portnoy's solo on LiT you're asking about. If
it's the bit directly after the samples of "By Demons Be Driven" then I
    think it goes like this:

    [Kick drum 1/2 - right/left kick drum]

Snare & crash followed by bass drum roll, then:

Snare, snare, kick drum 1, kick drum 2, rack tom, rack tom, rack tom,
rack tom, kick drum 1, kick drum 2, rack tom, rack tom, kick drum 1, kick
drum 2, rack tom, rack tom, kick drum 1, kick drum 2, rack tom, rack tom,
rack tom, rack tom...repeats and then onto jam block/kick
    drums/cowbell/snare thing.

I'm doing this from memory as I haven't got a video player here at uni so
I haven't seen the video for a while. It's along those lines, though.
I've no idea why Kevin Moore tilts his keyboard, either. He does have the
pitch bend at the left on the top of the two rack mounted synths (a Korg
DW8000?), and I *think* that either he's using the pitch bend and the
modulation, or he's just being different! Any keys players on the 'jam
know why? As for JP's mistakes, I didn't know that he *made* mistakes...! :-)

Sorry to those of you who don't play drums and find this boring/confusing
    etc.

    Hope this helps, Ben.

I haven't been to very many shows (3 total, in fact). I've never had the
chance to see Dream Theater live, so the three shows I went to were Rush,
Pink Floyd, and The Moody Blues. Obviously, I haven't witnessed any
moshing. So, can someone give me a working definition of moshing? I can
pretty much figure out what it is, but what's the line between
    headbanging, slamdancing, and moshing?

The musical, huh? As opposed to the book, the hundereds of movies
(including the one with Robert Englund that I refused to see because I
heard they messed up the story), and the album by Iron Maiden? <G>

I LOVE that musical. I had the oppotunity to see it on Broadway in New
    York and it was FANTASTIC.

I basically did what I did at the three concerts I went to. I sat back
and ENJOYED the music. Which is probably what I would do at the Dream
Theater concert. I'd just absorb the music.

    Greetings,

This is an account of an actual event. I am not intending to make
    generalities about the issue.
I saw Dream Theater and Galactic Cowboys at the American Theater
in St. Louis in May 1993. To this date, this is the most fun I've ever
had at a concert because all of my friends were there. We began moshing
part of the way through the show. It was great fun. A few other people
joined in, including a sweaty drunk guy with no shirt that none of us
knew. It was fun, but I don't remember much about the concert. No, I
wasn't toasted or tripping. I simply didn't see as much of the show as I
normally do. It was great fun listening to two of my favorite bands play
while thrashing around with my best friends. However, I occasionally
regret doing it because I missed out on seeing what was probably one of
the better concerts I've been to.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! But I mean that in
the nicest possible sense. <G> Remember, I'm not laughing WITH you...

Seriously, I liked most of Firehouse's stuff on their first album. I
never got their second one. I lost interest in many of the 80's metal
bands after their first album. I guess it was because there were some
cool songs, but some were just stupid. I can't listen to a Firehouse,
Slaughter, or Skid Row CD all the way through like I can with Dream
Theater. I have to skip a few tracks. At least Skid Row's second album
had enough good songs on it to cause me to get it. Hell, I might just pop
that old CD in sometime just to hear "Monkey Business," "Wasted Time,"
    and "Quicksand Jesus."

Anyway, I'm getting off track. My point is that even though I've
"graduated" to the more artisticly inclined progressive rock, I still
like some of that old 80's "wank rock." So I don't think people should
laugh at you for that (that is, unless you like Winger). <G>

"Hey, Butt-head, I'm going as a wuss!" (said while wearing a Winger shirt)

Many of DT's songs may be heavy, but I wouldn't classify ANY as

2112 is the name of an album Rush released in 1976. It contains a
20-minute epic, noy unlike ACosS called 2112. This is CLASSIC Rush. I
    highly recommend it.

It was more than one episode. Cornholio appeared on at least 3 episodes.
Basically, Beavis takes in too much caffeine from either chocolate or
coffee and goes NUTS. In the second Cornholio epsode, B&B are in one of
those poetry cafes and Beavis drinks a little too much Cappucino. "I need
Cappucino for my bunghole!" The third is the recent Halloween episode.
This episode sprts such classic lines as "I'm a nacho" and "I'm going as
    a wuss!"

Now for the DT content: Was the video for "Pull Me Under" ever on Beavis
and Butt-head? They's have a field day with that video!

I dunno. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people on this list saw The
Crow and liked it. It's got a strong poetic and artistic feel, much like
    Dream Theater.

Yes, I wholeheartedly agree. And there's some great music by The Cure,
NIN, Pantera, and My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult. No, nothing like DT,
    but it's still good stuff.

    Message-ID: <199511212146.QAA03307@rpc17.gl.umbc.edu>

Allow us to introduce ourselves. We are humble makers of ....

Whoops sorry, thought I was MIke Bahr again...

Anyway, Mike Backof and myself (Jason Hartman) are working on a new project
for the Ytsejam. We are going to put together a compilation of ALL of the
ORIGINAL VERSIONS of songs that DT preformed at the Ronnie Scotts gig.
Just to make sure this is clear, we are NOT making tapes of the actual
Ronnie Scotts DT show but we are collecting ALL of the original versions of
the songs that DT preformed at the show but by the original artists (does
this sound like a TV commercial yet?). It's probably going to end up being
a 2 tape set with most all of the songs coming from CD's for the best possible
sound quality. We think that many of you would be interetsed in something
like this since you are probably not familiar with all of the artists that
DT paid tribute too. It will include a color j-card with liner notes about the
origins of the songs, a custom designed cover and hopefully stick-on labels
for the actual tape (like with the original Kev Demos).

We are still in the planing stages and we wanted to get some idea about
how many Jammers would be interested in something like this.
We are planning on taking orders in December and starting delivery in
January after the big X-mas rush at the post office.

What we need now is just to get some idea of how many people would be
interested in this project. Please just send either of us a note (e-mail
addresses are posted below) and let us know that you would be interested and
also give us some idea what type of price you would be willing to pay for
this. (The price should cover 2 Maxell XL-II 90min tapes, padded envelope,
1st class US shipping, misc shipping material (tape, labels etc.), paper for
j-cards and labels, wear and tear on our tape decks and my Inkjet, a few bucks
for our trouble, a few bucks cause we are cool dudes etc.... :)

We are NOT taking orders yet!! No pre-orders. No reservations etc etc etc.
We just want you to say "Yeah, your tape thing sounds cool. $10-$12 would be
a fair price" or something like that.

Here are the addresses to mail to :

    Jason Hartman LHARTM1@GL.UMBC.EDU
    Mike Backof MBACKO1@GL.UMBC.EDU

Thanks for reading and I hope this will be a big success and be appreciated
    by many Jammers.

BTW - the title is still TOP SECRET!! When we have everything together,
we will make an official post to the Jam with all of the needed info like
    price, mailing addresses etc.

My guess is the REAL scene where Eric Draven dies. The way I understood it, he was originally supposed to get shot in a store. That's the scene were he was really shot and died. The producers thought it would be quite uncool to use that footage so they reshot a new death. If you pay attention, you'll notice they never show his face in the death scene. Not ever, until he falls out of the window. And then it is most definately a still picture superemposed on a falling ChromaKey.

If anyone else has any Crow trivia, please email it to me, don't send it to the list.
