That critique didn't make it a whole lot better, but it did bring up
a good point. Some of the stuff really shouldn't be here. Like the
trivia questions about bands that have nothing to do with DT. (Yes,
I know I answered one of those, but now I think it would've been
better to e-mail it directly to that person).
Why can't anyone complain? Are we that insecure? All of us belong
here. Just because some don't like what's going on, doesn't mean
they should leave.
I think the way it was stated in parts was a bit overboard, though.
(F*** being used from time to time). Instead of saying that things
used to be better, why don't you try making them better? Start a
thread that has some DT content.
The last time we were getting flooded with unrelated posts (top 5
lists) we had many posts saying "Unsubscribe me" or "I
didn't read the last few 'jams stuffed in my e-mailbox because of...."
Let's don't start this again.
And now, back to the 'jam.....

True, but there is a problem with the Lie video. The file is
corrupted. Many of us had tried to download it and found that
afterwards, the movie wouldn't play. I've been able to play a few
other Quicktime videos, but this one wouldn't work for me.

Yeah, pretty much ANYTHING DT covered by Metallica would be pretty cool.
Those instrumentals would KICK. At least James gets to say SOMETHING
during "To Live is to Die," though not much. At least the other James
(Hetfield) plays guitar, so he wasn't bored when Metallican did them.

Behold, the latest thoughts from The Fucking Idiot.
For quite some time I have wondered exactly which member of DT wrote each
of the four verses of "Take The Time." I have heard that LaBrie had no
part in the lyrics, so I assume that each verse can be matched up with one
of the other four members - Moore, Myung, Petrucci, or Portnoy. The chorus
I have heard was written by "everyone," so whether LaBrie had a part in it
or not, no single author wrote it.
Anyway, I don't know if the information of "who wrote which" has ever been
disclosed by Portnoy, but if anyone on this mailing list happens to know,
please enlighten me.
I could be wrong about every single one of these, but...
Verse #1: "Just let me catch my breath..."
I think this verse is by Mike Portnoy. It's not quite as fluid as most of
the stuff Kevin wrote, by which I mean not as poetic. This verse just
doesn't seem to flow off of LaBrie's tongue like a lot of DT's lyrics.
It's kind of stilted and unusually "normal," by which I mean there are no
unusual words one might need to look up in the dictionary. Most of the
words have one direct meaning, and it's very easy to determine (decipher)
the overall "meaning" of this verse. Well, easier than some of the later
ones...
It's also written in comprehendable english, and I can understand it just
by reading it, so I don't think it was written by Petrucci. It's pretty
straightforward stuff, very non-metaphorical, which is what I have learned
to expect from Portnoy. No swirling clouds of violet mist to enshroud the
actual meaning, like that other guy. :)
Verse #2: "There is something that I feel..."
Kevin Moore, somewhat by default. The chorus was written by all four
gentlemen, and the other three verses I've narrowed down to one writer.
Now, there are obviously no references to a woman that has scorned Kevin
beyond all recognition, so you're probably thinking, "No way, there's not
enough angst, this can't be Kevin Moore's lyrics." (I would hope that most
of you can follow along with the lyrics because you, ahem, own Images &
Words.)
This entire verse is apprehensive, like something big is about to occur,
reminiscent of a lot of Moore's lyrics. The last line in particular, "I
won't waste another breath," seems definitely Moore-ish. (no, not
north-African) I can't imagine Myung or Petrucci writing such get-up-and-
go lyrics, "I'm going to attack this thing, get out of my way!" It's just
not a topic that those two seem to deal with. And again, the first verse
just says "Mike Portnoy." (actually, the first verse says, "My vocal style
is momentarily switching to that of Michael Jackson, please pardon the
confusion.")
I would venture to say that Moore seems more "unbalanced" or "scarred" as
reflected in his writing, as opposed to Myung and Petrucci's evenly-paced,
relatively level-toned lyrics. Myung I would call almost hopeful at times,
which is a nice balance to a lot of the stuff Moore wrote.
Verse #3: "The unbroken spirit..."
John Myung. It's long, which at first makes me think of Petrucci. However,
like I said with the first verse, these lines are relatively easy to
understand. They fit into an obvious meaning, which makes me think it's
Not Petrucci.
And read those first three words. I don't think I've ever read a lyrical
passage in which Petrucci mentions anything of a "definite" nature towards
religion, ie nothing personal. No spirits, no God, no angels. He hints at
religion occasionally, and he quotes the Bible frequently, but nothing
like this, nothing at all personal. Now ask yourself, out of Moore,
Petrucci, Myung, and Portnoy, whom would be most likely to write "the
unbroken spirit" in a self-reflective way, keeping the point of the song
in mind? ...Myung.
I would not be surprised at a line about an "unbroken spirit" coming from
Myung, but it almost seems too..."faithful" to be coming from Petrucci,
and too "hopeful" to be coming from Moore.
Verse #4: "I close my eyes, and feel the water rise around me,
Drown the beat of time, let my senses fall away,
I can see much clearer now, I'm blind."
Definitely not Mike Portnoy or Kevin Moore. I think it is Petrucci because
of two references: (1) "the beat of time," time seeming to be a favorite
lyrical-reference of Petrucci, and (2) the last line, which is a Biblical
reference, and Petrucci seems to be the main Bible-quoter of the four.
However, there is a reference to water, which makes me think of Myung.
It's also a very short verse, which makes it kind of contradictory to say
Petrucci wrote it due to his consistant, um, use of many many words. It
seems almost too concise to be something Petrucci wrote, but I give him
the edge because it really seems like his obscure style of writing. And
because of his bizarre lack of direct, personal involvement in most of his
lyrics. In that particular sense he is the opposite of Moore, who almost
writes with sharp vengeance (hatred?) at times. Portnoy and Myung are
somewhere in-between. Based solely on the lyrics, on a scale of turbulence
to tranquility, I would rank it: Moore * Portnoy * Myung * Petrucci.

No you weren't. I don't think you read my post. I have a DIRECT quote from
James saying he wasn't in the band from the book "Metallica:Unbound" from KJ
Doughton. It's 10 times better than "The Frayed Ends of Metal" because
Doughton has been associated, and a friend of the band since 1982 when their
first demo came out. It's also in the Metallica FAQ which you can get from
the Metallica CLub's site on AOL or possibly on the net (I've seen a
different FAQ on the net...don't know why). I own both books (and another)
and I strongly reccomend you get "Metallica:Unbound" because it has many
more quotes from the band, and therefor many more facts. By the way the
pictures are awesome too. The "Frayed Ends of Metal" is more like some
writer trying to make some money off of a famous band....anyways look for DT
content in my sig

months, especially amongst Rush fans. There are at least 3 messages about
Dream Theater in every RUSH NMNS newsletter that comes out. Much has been
extremely positive. Keep spreading the word everyone!

They are one of the best progressive metal bands!

This goes to Fred (flidskog@email.unc.edu):
I have just picked up the Silent Man CD single after months of
searching, and I have to say it is WELL worth it.
EVE is superb, and the TTT demo sounds so much better on CD (I
previously only had it on the 12" of Lie), and I agree with other
jammers and say it's probably better than the I&W version. I reminds
me of the live version a lot.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Also:
I've just finished listening to WDADU for the first time in a month
or so, and it's true, it is a truly brilliant album.
Charlie's voice has grown on me a bit now, I used to hate it, but now
I've got used to it. (mind you I still prefer the songs with James
singing them!)
Silly me put down LFAGA as my least fav. song in the last poll, but
having just listened to it again I reckon that it's brilliant and I
haven't got a least fav. DT song!!!!
Andy.
PS. has anyone else heard Sky Babies by The Wildhearts? I've voted
for it in Mike's epic poll. mail me if you have!

Hmmm.... I would have thought that my mail box would be flooded by
people saying that they were interested in our new tape project. I haven't
heard how many responses Mike got but I only received 5 messages so far!
Come on , guys/gals!!!! We REALLY need to hear from you if you are interested
in getting one of these!! If we only receive messages from 20 or so people
and then prepare 20sets to go out, we are gonna be in DEEP SHIT if
we post the ordering info and receive 500 orders!!
Here is the original post again for those of you that may have skipped it
the 1st time.
BTW - Mike Bahr, thanks for the support!! We may get in touch with you
to find out about overseas shipping prices.
-------
Allow us to introduce ourselves. We are humble makers of ....
Whoops sorry, thought I was MIke Bahr again...
Anyway, Mike Backof and myself (Jason Hartman) are working on a new project
for the Ytsejam. We are going to put together a compilation of ALL of the
ORIGINAL VERSIONS of songs that DT preformed at the Ronnie Scotts gig.
Just to make sure this is clear, we are NOT making tapes of the actual
Ronnie Scotts DT show but we are collecting ALL of the original versions of
the songs that DT preformed at the show but by the original artists (does
this sound like a TV commercial yet?). It's probably going to end up being
a 2 tape set with most all of the songs coming from CD's for the best possible
sound quality. We think that many of you would be interetsed in something
like this since you are probably not familiar with all of the artists that
DT paid tribute too. It will include a color j-card with liner notes about the
origins of the songs, a custom designed cover and hopefully stick-on labels
for the actual tape (like with the original Kev Demos).
Also, it IS going to include the full lenght versions of all of the
songs, no editing.
We are still in the planing stages and we wanted to get some idea about
how many Jammers would be interested in something like this.
We are planning on taking orders in December and starting delivery in
January after the big X-mas rush at the post office.
What we need now is just to get some idea of how many people would be
interested in this project. Please just send either of us a note (e-mail
addresses are posted below) and let us know that you would be interested and
also give us some idea what type of price you would be willing to pay for
this. (The price should cover 2 Maxell XL-II 90min tapes, padded envelope,
1st class US shipping, misc shipping material (tape, labels etc.), paper for
j-cards and labels, wear and tear on our tape decks and my Inkjet, a few bucks
for our trouble, a few bucks cause we are cool dudes etc.... :)
We are NOT taking orders yet!! No pre-orders. No reservations etc etc etc.
We just want you to say "Yeah, your tape thing sounds cool. $10-$12 would be
a fair price" or something like that.

Greetings y'all. Just popping in to say "Hey" while I'm home here
for Thanksgiving. I've got something like 50 jams to go through, so I have
my work cut out for me. I was just listening to Acoustic Dreams the other
day, and I must say that I like it a lot. Just reviewed ACOS for my college
newspaper, too. Needless to say, it was a very positive review. Well,
gotta get to those back 'Jams so i can see what's been going on here. Later
all. God bless.
Dale R. Newberry
P.S. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!!

First of all, Ben, your name-the-tune questions are WAY too easy, almost all
of them are Metallica songs, and anyone who's been a fan of the band at all
should be able to get most of them with no probem ...
The Intimite & Interactive with Def Leppard on Much Music was great. They
played a bunch of their older songs off Hysteria. It was an all-acoustic
set as well, so it was interesting. But these guys are still going strong.
New album coming out next spring, and they'll be touring next summer. If
anyone wants
more info on it, e-mail me... (Much Music's I&I is similar in concept to
MTV's unplugged, only there's audience interaction, questions from phone
calls, e-mail messages, etc).

I would have put "Girls" as the topic, but Lady Icefire would have
commanded my monitor to detonate upon reading it with her magical powers.
Sometimes I wish I were David Kobayashi so I could counter that sort of
thing.
The Bafu Vai archives show this listing of Females Who Have Posted To The
'Jam. This is not an exhaustive list, but I'm surprised at the people who
say that there are only two/three females on the 'jam. There are probably
hundreds more hiding behind the stairs, but oh well:
Jennifer Albert (Airdance)
Barb Battaglialianoleonelenatti ("Hello everyone, it's BABS.")
Stacie Rosenzweig
Jaime Kimpton (The Dragon)
Patricia McLoughlin ("WIMAAAYYYY")
Hui-Chi (last name?)
Michelle Garcia (Puh-Pounded)
Kaoru Kobayashi (non-magical)
"Kinga"
Debbie Seeger
Margaret Pluta (though I hesitate to mention her out of fear that she will
become OFFENDED!!)
JennieBear (@aol.com)
Heather of Dragonlady (Lady Icefire, Self-Proclaimed Bitching Afficionado)
Rachel Goldenberg
Jodi ("What about me? I'm a girl, too! What about me?")

Rather hear the sound
Of your body breaking as I take you down."

Subject: songs for DT to cover
Message-ID: <199511232131.PAA17167@earth.execpc.com>
Hi Jammers,
Well, since there have been comments made about what theyd like DT to cover
(perhaps at a future Uncovered show?) heres mine (which I hope wont
completely bore you all). But before I list them though, does anyone feel a
strong connection between YYZ and Ytsejam? Id love to see DT resurrect
Ytsejam and throw in the solos and keyboard sections from YYZ right in
before the drum solo in Ytsejam. Perhaps they could call it YYJam or
YtseZ(ed) - heh heh. Okay, okay nuff goofing around, heres my list:
Rush songs:
Fear Triology - Id love to hear all three completely, but even a medley of
all three would be cool! I especially want to hear WitchHunt - one of my
faves.
Natural Science - put simply - has DT written all over it!
Losing It - Id be very curious to hear how Derek could play some of the
electric violin parts of keys. Very obscure track (as obscure as Tears).
Between the Wheels - a heavier song that DT could do with ease.
Other bands:
Angel of Death (Thin Lizzy) - a song with some cool keyboard parts and an
intensity similar (to me) to LZs Achilles Last Stand. Would be a great
opener for a show or at least the opening section to a medley.
Caught Somewhere in Time (Iron Maiden) - love to hear this with Derek doing
half of the solos and rhythm guitar parts on keys
Into the Lungs of Hell (Megadeth) - excellent instrumental that (again) Derek
could do some guitar parts on keys (and still get away with it sounding very
cool).
Other tracks - Diary of a Madman (Ozzy), Neue Regal (Queensryche), Show Must
Go On (Queen), Al-Salooq (Ozric Tentacles), Touch of Evil (Judas Priest), and
a Black Sabbath (Dio-era) cover.
Oh and for an acoustic number (as they've been doing lately), how bout Rushs
Mystic Rhythms (Closer to the Heart and the Trees are so common, so this is
more obscure)?

Hi Jammers,
First off, it sounds like the Dec DT shows are gonna be FLOODED with
out-of-towners! Ill be very curious to know what percentage of people show
up at each show that live outside a 50 mile radius from each venue! WOW! To
bad I wont be going as my cousin is getting married on the 30th (though it is
in SC, so maybe I can go - ah whom Im fooling...)
Congrats to John and Rena!!
To Jeff Chew:
Thanx for the update with Mike P and all! I am very VERY curious about this
Rush tribute thingy hes planning on doing. If this will be done during the
Dec shows, someone PLEASE tape it!! (Brian Cox - make sure your DAT players
in tip top shape!! :) Hell, for that matter, see if you can hook up the deck
to the soundboard! Hehe, okay so Im dreaming, so sue me!) Oh and Jeff (or
anyone else that speaks to Mike), please find out what the names of the
instrumentals are (the one following TLF on 5/15/93, the extend jam on the LiT
vid, the instrumental following LSoaD and any of the solo pieces) - thanx!
To Pat Daugherty:
Threshold is awesome! They hold the number 4 spot in my fave bands (1 Rush, 2
DT, 3 Queensryche, 5 Iron Maiden). I understand theyre working on their
third CD - Im looking forward to it. As to Mastermind, I cant agree
(personally). I dunno, Ive listened to it a couple times, but its not in my
top five (or top ten for that matter) - sorry. I recommend that you check out
Ivanhoe!
To Bafu (or anyone else): how bout some more info on Leviathon and the band
that features ex-Leviathon members - youve gotten my interest - lets here
about em.

I should also mention that I agree with whoever said we should cut down on how
much we quote from old jams. I can understand in a few instances why it would
be neccessary, but I think its gotten a little outta hand lately. I mean at
least when Bafu would quote from old jams, he would generally use only a
couple of lines for each response, which I think is appropriate.
Enuff ramblings! C-ya!
