Yet another example of "How *NOT* to follow instructions".
As has been said before, do *NOT* send unsub requests to the list.
Send:

Ok guys one more time. MKizer is still topping me on responses, (although he is posting every other jam it seems like!) I've only got aroung 50 responses. I hope I can at least double this number this time. I plan on posting the results sometime in the near future so please get me as many responses as possible. To all who have responded thank you very much. Here are the questions one last time:
1. From 1 to 10, How do you rate ACOS?
2. Which section of ACOS do you like best? (I,II,III,IV,V,VI, or VII)
3. Which cover tune is your favorite? (Please be specific like "Funeral for a Friend", not just Elton John.)
Later everyone
PS - Jason where's your response!!!????

The acoustic guitar at the beginning of ACOS could very well be a six-string only using very heavy guage strings. This would allow the E to be tuned down to B, A to E, etc. without a dramatic loss of string tension. When Awake came out and I was learning Lie, Caught In a Web, and Mirror, this is what I did, except I used heavy guage for the E, tuning it down to B, and heavy guage for the A, tuning it down to E or F# ( for that "dropped D type feeling only with a B"). I still kept the D,G,B,and high E the same. This wasn't too bad because all the parts in Lie that used the A string could be done on a different string without too much effort. If I remember correctly, when Caught in a Web was transcribed in one of the guitar books, it was transcribed on a six-string with E tuned to B and A tuned to F#. This is cool to experiment with. Although using all heavy guage strings and tuning down all strings will constitute a loss of the high E.
Any comments, questions, criticisms, feel free to reply.

Greetings, all.....
Someone was asking about songs that have the same titles as albums other than the one they're on.....I'm not sure if this really counts, but.... They Might Be Giants released their self-titled debut album in 1986, but the song "They Might Be Giants" ended up on their third album, Flood. I still think it would've been really cool if the band, the album, and the song all had the same name....but then again, I'm easily amused......:-)

P.S. Am I the only one on this list that absolutely loves TMBG?? They're nothing at all like DT, so I wouldn't necessarily recommend them, but still very cool......

Howard I remember when Awake first came out I read an interview w/ JP about the new album. When asked how long the band knew that Kevin was leaving John said that the lyrics in 6:00 were Kevs way of saying he needed to follow his own path. After seeing this I went back and read the lyrics and it almost caused tears to flow. John also said that Innocence Faded was his way of telling Kev that he felt Kev was growing apart from the rest of the group.
6:00 "Finally found the sound but he's in too deep" - The HE is Kevin and the SOUND is Kevs new direction i.e. his demos. "Feel like blowing my cover" - Kevin wants to tell the band he needs to move on. Read all the lyrics in this song from this view and it fits.
Innocence Faded "Passionless stage Distant like brothers" - John saying he sees Kevin isn't realy into it any more.

Please be sure to let us all know if anyone finds out any info on this DT/Qryche show in DC!!!! That would be the SHIT!!!
I wonder who would open? (I'm sure you can guess who *I* would pick.) Even if it was a dual headlining thing, like 2hours each, I still wouldn't wanna see DT 1st and then be let down a bit by Qryche. Maybe they could both set up and play together like a dualing banjo thing!!! I don't think even Wilton and DeGarmo together could keep up with some of Johns playing!! :) Geoff could sing some harmonies with James, that would be pretty cool! (I still think echolyn should have come out and sang the backup vox on Take the Time).
BTW - anyone have the lyrics to Cry For Freedom? (And yes, it DOES have lyrics, I just can't make them out when Chris Collins is singing cause most of it is beyond the range of the human ear).
Also, any James' fans should check out some Winter Rose stuff (his previous band, in case you didn't know). I was listening to a live tape the other day and he was excellent!! Very smooth and possibly even a higher range than he has now! Anyone know if they have any studio material or even studio demos? I only know of 1 or 2 live shows.
BTW - James said Fuck at the Winter Rose show too. :)

---------- To Richard Karsmakers:
Yes, such a "guide" would be helpful, but it would also be a lot of work. Don't expect all the jammers to flock to such an idea. I can tell without even thinking about it that it would take hours just to do I&W. And then we'd have people arguing over technicalities just like they do when people put lyrics/tab on the Jams. Even the transcribers (Jammers with all the time in the world on their hands) gave no feedback. Usually I jump at questions like "what is Petrucci playing right here?" But what you suggested is a monumental project that would take a lot of people. If it happens at all, it's not going to happen overnight.
---------- To Jeffrey Furry:
Interesting review. I have to disagree with that part about the key changes. The author would have us believe, and I quote:
"M>2!I;B!W:&EC:"!O;F4@:V5Y(&1E=F5L;W!M96YT(&EN(&]U<B!M=7-I8V%L M(&AI<W1O<GD*:&%P<&5N960@9&EF9F5R96YT;'DN("!4:&4@<&]I;G0@;VX@ M+7!R;V<@97AC97-S+B @26X*;W5R('5N:79E<G-E+"!T:&ES('5P<FES:6YG"
When we all know that sort of thing is more Myung's background than Portnoy's.
---------- My contribution to a current thread:
"Rock"/"Metal" bands I was into before DT: Extreme, Alice In Chains, Pantera, Van Halen, Queensryche, Firehouse, King's X, Mr. Big, Stone Temple Pilots, Metallica, Racer X, Winger, etc.
Bands I was exposed to due to DT: Fates Warning, Rush, Pink Floyd, Marillion, Magellan, Galactic Cowboys.
Bands I actually got into after listening to DT: Galactic Cowboys.
DT influences/contemporaries that I can't stand: Rush, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden, Marillion, Magellan, Fates Warning.
And now that I've stepped on millions of toes, on to the next blurb.
----------
Okay, Fates has other albums, and due to numerous e-mails lately, I'm probably going to purchase "Perfect Symmetry" sometime this month.
Speaking of Fates, I'd like to mention that when I joined this list, I had never heard of Fates Warning. All I heard here was, "If you like DT, you'll like FW." Then I saw DT at The Moore Theater in Seattle with FW opening, and everyone in line said, "They're just like DT." I remember that show like it was yesterday...
They began with "Monument," and I didn't like it. As for the whole show, one guitarist had a lot of inaudible rhythm parts, the other was covering so many scales that no amount of volume or eq in the world would have made him clearer, but I could tell by his fingerings that he would probably sound really good on an album in a quiet room. The bassist and vocalist were cool, and I could understand all the words being sung, unlike that other vocalist we talk about so much on this list.
The one fellow I noticed more than the others was the drummer, even though as The Drummer he wasn't able to move around the stage like the others. He looked kind of monstrous, and had a very noticeable "presence." Anyway, this guy was hitting every single piece of his kit like he had an important meeting to go to right after whichever song he happened to be playing. Either that or he REALLY had to get to a bathroom. Movement-wise, he reminded me of the Tasmanian Devil. I mean, you could count to ten, and every cymbal in front of him would be swinging, struck at least once.
That might work in a solo, but he was busy ALL THE TIME. His playing was wild. Too wild to fit in as a member of a band. Pardon me for not knowing who he was: Mark Zonder, drum god extraordinaire. My impression was that he was incohesive and all over the place. Skilled, yes, but doing too much.
Well, FW didn't sound "just like DT." I bought Inside Out just in case that show was a bad night or something. "Outside Looking In" was the only song I liked, and I didn't flip over the heralded "Monument." Like I said, I'm going to pick up Perfect Symmetry to give them another try.
Now I'd like to name the band that I think FW sounds exactly like on Inside Out: Queensryche.
----------
For those who asked, I heard "Counterparts," "Chronicles," and "Roll The Bones." The Rush fans I talked to said RTB was a "disappointing" Rush album, and that the band "really took a left turn." Can the Rush fans on this list explain what that means? I will say that the inlay booklet for "Counterparts" was masterfully put together. An awful lot of thought went into it.
One of these days I'm going to just conform and post what I dislike about DT.

Hi everyone,
Last week I watched Oliver Stone's SF series Wild Palms, and there I noticed a very familiar looking boy. Indeed, I think it's the boy on the cover on ACoS. His name is BEN SAVAGE, and he plays the role of Cody Wyckoff, the son of Harry Wyckoff, who is played by James Belushi.
So I think the problem is solved, it's not MP on the album ! He doesn't really look him, does he ?

I disagree with the person who wants to keep DT underground. If you get tired of listening to the same things over and over on eMpTytV and the radio, turn them off! I almost never listen to the radio and I only watch MTV every other week or so when 120 Minutes is on. Everyone whines and complains about how repetitive radio is, but they keep on listening. Just turn it off and listen to your DT collection. If the unwashed masses want to turn your favorite band into a trend, let them. I think DT can withstand the pressures of popularity. They obviously know who their real fans are and I am doing everything I can to get people interested in new bands like DT. Just read my sig file! :) Ok, I'll stop now. He just hit one of my "buttons".

"Unfortunately, it will be ignored (airdance would probably vouch for that). Heck, I would guess that most subscribers ignored their welcome message (at least from the most of the sub/unsub requests that I see ;)"
Agreed, unfortunately. Are we the only people who actually read those silly welcome messages, Ken? ;) And I even *save* those suckers for future reference, EEK!! :^)
Again, if anyone else needs the lyrics or liner notes for the KM demos, e-mail me a request!
Take care everyone,

Being a giant Rush fan, I can kinda relate to that. Power Windows is probably my favorite Rush album but when I got it, I didn't like it much. I kept listening and it became my favorite. I'm glad that you gave them another chance and like 'em now. You probably noticed that those two albums are somewhat different from each other. That's the way with most Rush albums. Individually, there's a common theme and/or sound but it's different from previous albums. You should check out Power Windows and Counterparts!

Hi, first I want to say that I'm new to the list, though I've been a Dream Theater fan for well over a year. Since I'm new, I might bring up some things already mentioned. If that's the case, just ignore me (just don't feed upon my misery or string me up for all the world to see). <G>
Did anyone notice that Mike Portnoy's picture on inside of the jacket for ACOS looks like Ringo Starr?
I'd also like to comment on the intro/outro controversy for ACOS. Something I've found with Dream Theater is that when they put something in their music, there's a purpose for it. There's a REASON the song begins and ends with the same acoustic chords. Think about the name of the song: A Change of Seasons. Now look how the seasons change during the year. It's a never ending cycle qith no real beginning or end. The seasons go from winter to spring to summer to fall and back to winter where the cycle repeats itself.
Now, if you have a CD player with REPEAT (I'm sure most do), set ACOS on repeat. You hear the outro, which leads into the intro. Then you have a cycle of seasons just like the seasons from year to year.

A few jams back someone slammed the new Satriani CD. I was nervous of listening to it after that, held it for 5 days before I made time (still having ACOS to love), and tapes to make for other (now happy) jammers. I like to spread the pleasure of discovering my new music, so loaded 'Joe Satriani' on Friday evening. I have, and love to pieces, all Joe's albums. >>>

Although I love the big rockers on 'The Extremist' and the later work on 'Time Machine' (which was a sort of compilation of unreleased work from 1983 - 1993 - hence 'Time Machine'), I was hoping for something different this time. Well, as soon as I heard the first track I thought 'He's done it ! Just what I wanted ! My allowance for the evening was just three tracks 1,4 8 all of which I loved, bringing my usual comment - reserved for Joe - 'That was Wonderful !' So, my advice is : listen to this album with a new ear and a new mind, do not expect it to be the same as the last one or two. That is not what 'Satrionics' is about. We expect something new from DT each time so why not from Joe. PS1. About the sad news of AWAKE 'in the bin', I assume you mean second hand - I was very sad when I went to Burbank during my California (dreamin') holiday and found 5 copies of AWAKE in the second hand section there - $7.99-$8.99. PS2 When I visited THE DREAM THEATER in Monterey I took some pics. I am hoping to get a friend to scan one to a .bmp file which I can mail to the US for someone to distribute there. PS3 I still have ytses 962 - 988 to catch up on since my holiday ! Going home now to hear ACOS then 3 more tracks from 'Joe Satriani' PS4: Has anyone out there, especially in LA, heard of Marc Bonilla ? He is another great guitarist. I would love some news of him. PS5: I am glad other jammers agree with me about not using Mercy Fxxx. Patricia
