I am always looking for bootlegs by:
Dream Theater (especially Awake videos and anything after the "Waking
                    Up The World Tour")
            Extreme videos
Van Halen (especially video of the 9/20 Denver "Snowfest" and ANY
                    old Roth-era boots)
Phish (especially 6/30/95 at Great Woods, MA & 12/31/94 at Boston
                    Gardens

    COMING SOON:
            Dream Theater: "Acoustic Dreams"

I have noted all "professional" releases in quotation marks, and when I
own the CD, that is also mentioned just after the title. All others are
audience recordings (both audio and video). If you would like to work
out a trade, I am very reliable, use high-grade tapes, and have a good
turn-around time. If you have any specific questions, let me know.
Send your trade proposals and other requests to: bertapel@ucsu.colorado.edu

Hey everybody, just in case anybody is interested. The October 1995 issue of
Guitar Shop magazine has a article on John Petrucci guitar rig (live and
studio ),recording of their CD at Beartracks Studio in New york and his new
J.P. model Ibenez guitar. Also the guitar riff in the Live in Tokyo Video is
Panteras "By Demons Be Driven" and the guitar parts are samples by the way
it sounds. That's Dime Bag Darrels signature sound which is nothing like
    J.P. sound. SEEYA...............

Somebody was asking if there was anybody here who was not especially into Rush/Kings X/FW, etc.... thats me. I used to be really into death metal (no, that doesnt mean Pantera or Slayer... it means Deicide, Gorguts, Napalm Death, Monstrosity, Ripping Corpse, and the funniest name: Defecation, etc). I've been getting out of it latly, and more into Type-O-Negative, Life of Agony, Sheer Terror, and shit like that... I'm a drummer tho, so I still like listening to death metal for the drums, and thats how I got into Dream Theater... of course, DT is nothing like those other bands...

On a similar note, I went to a Mike Portnoy drum clinic here in Syracuse, NY and he mentioned that he's been listening to two bands that I really happen to like: Fear Factory (get Demanufacture--its really good) and Machine Head (which is cool if you're into slayer, but more technical...). Of course, he also said (no lie) that he like the Foo Fighters album... :(

any other DEATH METAL freaks out there???

To the person who mentioned Ozric Tentacles. I have Arborescence and Jurassic Shift as well as a mix tape someone made for me. They have other albums called: Pungent Efulegent, Live Underslunky, and some other weird titles. As best as I can tell, all their material is about the same quality. There is something to be said for consistency. A startlingly good idea occured to me a few days ago: a DREAM THEATER/QUEENSRYCHE tour. Both band should be releasing an album next year (hopefully) and a tour like that would be amazing. Kinda like the Metallica/GNR thing a couple years back but far better, of course. Just a thought (maybe we should try to push the idea). Some people seem to be interested in what Jammers like other than the obvious bands like D.T, Rush, Yes, Queensryche, King's X, etc. Well, I like all those plus I like echolyn, King Crimson, the Waterboys, Damn the Machine, Royal Jelly, I Mother Earth, Kyuss, Galactic Cowboys, Atomic Opera, Leviathan, Magellan, Voivod, E.L.P., U.K. (who have a new album coming out), Sting, Michael Manring, Faith No More, Marty Freidman (solo work) and a bunch of other stuff which I can't think of at the moment.

For those who care, I read on the internet that Edwin, the singer from I Mother Earth, and Les Claypool will be appearing on Alex Lifeson's solo album (I don't know to what degree).

Sorry for the lack of DT content.

In Ytsejam 1011, Fred wrote about in ACoS, at 13:00, where the music becomes somber and full of life. I agree TOTALLY!!!!! The beauty of the keyboards, lead guitar, and bass being played together captivated me from the first moment I heard it! I especially like the well-timed guitar riff that occours at 13:13-15 that seems to perfectly flow into the harmony. It is awesome!!!!!!! I LOVE DREAM THEATER!!!!!

What is your favorite Dream Theater album? (Mine is IMAGES & WORDS!!!!!!!!!!!) (Still can't get tired of it!!!!!!)

All this talk about calling into radio stations and requesting DT songs is kind of irking me. Before I subscribed to the Ytsejam list, I never knew that there were so many DT fans out there. I personally don't think that DT should be "mainstream" I mean, I wish the guys in the band the best, and God knows they deserve to be the best band in the world, but if they did get really popular, I think the music would start to degenerate. I've seen the boyz twice in Denver in a very intimate setting (Mammoth Events Center), and I just can't imagine DT playing huge stadiums. In fact I think that DT would start to lose the hardcore fans like me if they were on eMpTyV every second like TLC. I think that DT's music means so much to me that if it was played on MTV every other minute, it would lose that meaning. Just like Qryche's Empire lost some kind of meaning for me after Silent Lucidity became popular. If anyone out there agrees with me, say something. We must keep Dream Theater underground!! The music is too important!!!

Going down to a b with an e string would not enable the >string to be tight enough to have the tone it does on ACOS, let alone ANY tone >that I would want to have.

Well, many people when tuning down restring the bottom E. Sometimes as large as a 60, I usually have a 46 on my bottom E.

    >I believe that it is not just a b string replaced >for the e string. It is either a seven etring acoutstic or a six string with >the bottom siw stirngs of a seven stirngs, ie B E A D G B.

This makes some sense, but can anybody tell if any notes on the high E are played? I think I might of heard an open string on the high E..but I'll have to give it another listen

    >The more I think >about it, the more the latter of the two seems reasonable. Any conflicting >ideas that make sense? Please post, and I will see if I am wrong. I'd rather >hear some agreeing, though. Thanks ... >-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well first of all, I know for fact that he uses an old Gibson with really large strings in the studio. He says it "kills my fingers when I play it, but the tone is great". That fact that it has really large strings may support the tuning down idea... Another possibility is a pitch shifter, however I've never heard a pitch shifter that could get as great tones as ACOS. But there are some new ones out there...and on JP's budget who knows what he could get

The liner notes said it was limited edition. That's a cool CD. And yeah, it's hard to find. The reason it's hard to find is because it's licensed for PROMOTION only, not for resale *grin* I remember when they (marketing dept) was giving them away on the DT list. Gave out the free CD to the first 500 people or something like that. I got mine sitting on my stereo right now, listened to it the other night :) Chris

That's a Pantera part. It's the very beginning of, "By Demons be Driven" on "Vulgar Display of Power". I'm pretty sure that Petrucci is not playing that part, and it's a sample. Because the tone sounds EXACTLY like the album. Dimebag (pantera's guitarist) has a very distinctive tone. Anybody know if I'm wrong? Oh and on Caught in a Web on the Awake tour, he had a Slayer song in his solo. It hink it's safe to say that Mike has the heaviest influences in the band

I have some bad news for DT to tell you. Yesterday when looking through Specs I noticed that a couple copies of Awake were in the cutout bin, selling for $7.

Bad news for the band, I think.

All you guys who don't know what the LatM drum solo/ heavy guitar bit is, need some help!!! It is from Pantera's Vulgar Display Album. THe song is "By Demons be Driven". You guys reall yneed to check Pantera out!!!!!!!!!!! I'm not realy a death metal fan at all, but I must admit, PANTERA IS THE DT OF HEAVY/GROOVE/METAL MUSIC!!!! Seriously, I only listen to DT, but Pantera, still kick me in the butt occasionally.

If you guys think that the "Please dont go!" part of ACOS rules, check out Any Pantera album! The entire album is "Please dont go"!!! Actually as much as I like that part I gotta say htat many Pantera parts totally blow that one away!!! Check out Vulgar Display of Power and expand your musical tastes a little. I would definatly include PAntera as one of DT's influences and I'm sure Mike P would too!

I sorta feel like I should apologize for talking about Fates here, but there's no better place to do it, and they are *very* closely related to DT in a lot of ways, so... > > Dave <dduva@freenet.npiec.on.ca> wrote: > > ok, Fates' work doesn't jump out at you the first listen (and make sure

Some of it does. Depends on what you're looking for though. If you're a fan of heavy stuff, No Exit will grab you right away and pound you into dust. Parallels, though, is one of the most subtle Fates albums. It took a long time to grow on me, and some parts of it still don't thrill me (though I could listen to Point of View, 11th hour, and Still Water forever without getting tired of them.)

    > you're *listening* and not just *hearing*; HUGE difference). it's not > supposed to "jump out at you". this is why Fates is so amazing! everything > they do is very subtle and if you don't pay attention - ie. just passively > hear the music - then you'll say "What's the big deal about this?" > as i've posted before, to fully appreciate Fates, one must actively listen. > that means picking individual instruments or parts and following only that > and looking/listening at/to how that piece fits in with the rest to form the > whole. > It depends on what you're looking for, but it is true that to appreciate Fates you have to listen. If you're not sure what to listen for, you might start with the drums on track 5 of Parallels.

I kind of think Mark Zonder should get more credit for songwriting... his drums have taken the lead on the last few albums and have hugely contributed to the uniqueness of the music, and somehow I don't think Jim Matheos is telling him exactly what to play.

    > so, ummm, what was i saying? oh yeah :) it takes time - at least from the > people i've talked to - for Fates to grow on you. and that's what they do; > grow.

Especially if you're starting with Parallels or Inside Out. Keep in mind that Fates Warning has been constantly evolving since they started out...I won't post a complete review of their discography again, but if you want to try them out you have some idea of what it is you're looking for and then ask around to find out which album is the best to start with.

Here's the quickest summation possible: Ultra-Heavy = No Exit Lighter = Parallels Progressive = Perfect Symmetry

And for a study in contrasts, listen to Yes's "Time and a Word" followed immediately by "The Ivory Gate of Dreams."

Maybe someone can help me out with Yes. I can't stand Jon Anderson's vocals, and usually the music doesn't impress me enough to try and get over them. Is there any Yes fan out there who also hates his voice, but knows of an album that you just have to listen to regardless because it's that damn good?

Who could ask such a question?!?!

Petrucci is a wah master. He's one of the best at using a wah.

Considering the current trends in music, yeah, I can understand how another guitar player using a wah wah would be annoying. Some people just hear that there is a wah and not what the player is doing with it. The wah wah has gone in and out of style since it was invented. People start getting annoyed with it after it's heard on every new record in a certain time span. It's nearing the end of such a time span, and as luck would have it, ACOS was released.

Listen to the solo from "Voices" and THAT'S how to use a wah wah. He pushes the wah more thoughtfully, using it to accent certain notes and phrases rather than just rocking it back and forth as wildly as your Doc Marten-clad foot can.

In ACOS, he uses the wah in the same way that Frank Zappa and Michael Schenker do - set it in one place and use it as a filter/tone-control. This is responsible for some of the more nasally sounding tones on that track. (don't have the time indexes handy)

A couple months ago I got Rush's "Moving Pictures" and "2112". I was thoroughly unimpressed. About 20 minutes ago, I popped 2112 into my CDRom drive on my computer (which has a great speaker system) and was kinda like "Whoa", trying to figure out what I hadn't liked about it the first time. My opinion of Rush has completely changed in the last 20 minutes. They're rather awesome.

Now for the minimal DT content. I was wondering, since I don't know anyone else who's heard of DT, about the attendance at their concerts. Are they usually full, or at least well attended?

BTW, I'm not getting rid of my sig. The Instrumental I have has Afterlife, TOWHTSTS, Ytsejam, Cry for Freedom, The Killing Hand, Resurrection of Ernie, drum solo, and the "Guitar Player" piece....I thought this one was the only one out there, but I must've been wrong.
