It`s been a while. My seventeen units really have me bogged down.
On the favorite solo theme, I'd have to say Bombay Vindaloo winds hands
down. That song just hits me in the face and I find myself asking for
more. The song is so cool, I put part of it on my answering machine. You
know it's cool if it winds up on my machine.

I was listening to I&W the other day down by the front desk of my
dorm, and it sparked the intrest of a great many passerbys (sp?). Most of
them were blown away by it, and a few were noticably aggitated by "the
lack of a beat" as they put it. I just smirked at there comments and
    rocked on.Just a little semi-interesting story I thought I'd share. I find
out of all the posts, I like to read the stories the best.

That's all from the Great NorthWet.

Do I have to say the obvious? Of course I do, ACOS rocks!!!!!!!

    Message-ID: <9510070258.AA23125@anthor.arastar.com>

    Hi All,

Just wanted to relate a funny little thing that happened to me
tonight. I happen to go to school at the University of Wisconsin in
Madison but I am originally from Maine. And since I will be in Maine
for Christmas vacation I was quite excited when I heard about DT
playing in Conneticut. So I vowed that I would make the five hour
drive from my house in Maine to New London to see the greatest band on
    earth.

Well having heard how many this place there playing is I thought that
it might be a good idea if I tried to get a ticket before the actual
night of the show. So grabbing my handy phone book I called Conn.
information and got the number the the El-N-Gee (by the way it is
860-437-3800). So I said what the heck it is only 8pm in Conn. right
now I might as well try and call now. So I call and get this woman on
the phone at the El-N-Gee. She confirmed that DT was indeed playing
there on December 27th. Then I asked how I might get tickets. She
started going off about local record stores and such. I said there is
one slight problem and that is I am in Wisconsin at the moment. After
her initial shock and my lengthy explanation of why I was coming to
Conn. she was kind enough to set aside a ticket for me for the show.
I mentioned being on the internet and got a positive response as well.
Then I needed directions so she put this other guy on the line that
knew a little more than she did *grin*. After giving me directions to
New London and the El-N-Gee from Maine the guy was asking me why I
couldn't see DT nearer to where I live. So I explained that they were
only playing two shows that I knew of and I would go to just about any
lengths to see them this year.

So after mentioning the internet again I was offered a free drink when
I show up at the show. So what can I say. I was very impressed by
the people I talked to at the El-N-Gee. They seemed very interested
in DT and in helping a fan out. So all I need now is to convince one
of my relatives in Maine to let me borrow a car to go to the show
*laugh*. Would any other Jammers like to get together before the show
in New London? I plan on getting to the place early since I have a long
drive. And I would love to meet some new DT fans.

Anyway just thought that I would relate that little story to all you
folks. And by the way go get the new Savatage disk, it rocks! Later.

    Jason

Anyone know if DT will be playing in Long Island anytime soon? Specifically,
I'm interested in dates between Oct. 19 and Oct. 23. Is someone collecting
the dates that have passed by in the jam? If so, maybe summarize? Guitar or
Drum clinics are of interest as well.

Maybe if people would start seeing others as individuals rather than stereotyping them based on similar physical traits (skin color or hair length) then perhaps they wouldn't make stupid comments like the one below. What do you mean by "for now"? Are you planning a lynching?

    > > Too bad OJ got away with it,..... for now that is. If african >Americans would stop acting like victims of society perhaps they would >cease to become as such. > >Michael C. >

Profanity? Fifteen year old kids? Oh I forgot, your very simple mode of thinking is to group objects together based on stereotypes. I have news for you--the word FUCK is part of reality. Part of progressive thinking is to expose reality for what it is rather than denying its existence. The word FUCK exists and, as many jammers have pointed out, can be used in many different ways with many different meanings. I found the "Mercy Fuck" discussion to be relevant to our working out the lyrics to find the different meanings. >Is there anybody else out there as tired as I am of reading Mercy F____ >in every y-jam? Sometimes I think this list is primarily composed of >fifteen year old kids that marvel at the "F" word and probably have >never performed the act they espouse by using that word. There are >over 600,000 words in the english language. I can hear profanity >anytime, anywhere, I don't want to pay for it in the music I listen to. >My attraction to Dream Theater is because they are progressive in >thought and they apply that to their music. It would be nice to move >on to something else, just like DT does. Understand?

Furthermore, I would like to quote a very progressive thinker and great poet, Allen Ginsberg, to show yet another way to use the word FUCK in a sentence.

" who howled on their knees in the subway and were dragged off the roof waving genitals and manuscripts, who let themselves be fucked in the ass by saintly motorcyclists, and screamed with joy, who blew and were blown by those human seraphim, the sailors, caresses of Atlantic and Caribbean love," "Howl" (1956) Allen Ginsberg

By the way, wasn't Frank Zappa one of Mike Portnoy's biggest influences? Maybe you should check out some of his lyrics.

    OK Washington Metropolitan Jammers -

I just heard the most ridiculous rumor and I need to tell someone would could appreciate it (a.k.a. ytsejammers). This dude who works at the Music and Arts Center in Rockville told me that he read or heard from some important source that Dream Theater and Queensryche would be playing at RFK stadium sometime in late November early December.

REPEAT --- DREAM THEATER AND QUEENSRYCHE AT RFK STADIUM

This has to be an incredible cruel rumor for him to tempt me with, but I still have my fingers crossed. Can anybody who knows anything about DT's touring either confirm or deny this for me??!!??? I'm in total limbo! HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    P.S. This is my first post in a very long time. . . How've you all been??? P.P.S. Glad to hear it. |\ Chris | \ |\ \ Faith | \ \ Hope ## \ | Love ### \| ## | | ## ### ##

    >>I recently bought my first Marillion album, "Afraid of Sunlight" and >>I, well, didn't like it, to be honest. Is this typical Marillion, or is it >>usually better? No offense to fans. Just curious.

Afraid of Sunlight is typical of "New Marillion" - that is Marillion with Steve Hogarth singing vocals. "Old Marillion" would be when Fish (Derek Dick) was with the band. Fish's singing style was never my cup of tea, but he did write better lyrics. If you're willing to give them another chance, I'd try some "Old Marillion". My personal favorites are "Script for a Jester's Tear", Clutching at Straws, and "Fugazi". If you want a good sampling of their entire body of work, try "Six of One, Half Dozen of the Other" which actually gives you 14 songs from both new and old Marillion.

I had to listen several times to both New and Old Marillion before I grew to like them. Now, you couldn't pry their cd's out of my cold dead clutches. ^^^^^^^ I think you like that computer more than you like me. | | Not true, Liz. No, but sometimes when I'm in a Queensryche mood, I can slip Parallels between Operation: Mincrime and Empire and it fits just fine. When I'm in a DT mood, I cut it with Extreme, esp. their second album (Pornografitti).

Start with Strangeitude or Jurassic Shift. If you can find it, I really like Erpland and Live Underslunky as well. I've heard good things about Pungeant Efflugent, but haven't heard it. If you're in the Bay Area, they're playing Saturday at Slims in SF.

No, I disagree. John's use of the wah doesn't get annoying. Just my opinion, that's all.

Besides...a wah should be an integral part of any guitarist's arsenal of effects, I think anyway. I have a Vox V-846 Cry-Baby in my pedalboard.

I like to call what John does "meaningful shred".

He knows when to floor it and when to pull back.

Unlike the likes of Malmsteen, etc...which I call "Useless shred".

I am the only one who hears "Erotomania" in the ACOS intro? <Well into the intro, before the 1st verse> That part is in 9/8, similar to the feel of Erotomania intro.

Not me. Mercy F___, trivia, O.J., Fates Warning. To each his own.

It has nothing to do with that. Some of us think that the word works better in the song. Mike didn't use it just because it would make him sound k00l.

    > My attraction to Dream Theater is because they are progressive in > thought and they apply that to their music.

So then, any use of profanity, regardless of context, would be considered a letdown?

    > It would be nice to move > on to something else, just like DT does. Understand?

I understand. You seem to think that people are really pissed that the F word was replaced. Most of us don't think it's that big of a deal, and just figure it's something to talk about. Sorry if it has no O.J. content.

Hi from Germany (I'm in a good mood for once, it's NOT raining and there is a funny yellow thing in the sky).

Somebody, I forget who, asked in one of the last Jams about song titles that later became album titles. Well, I thought about this, and came up with the following:

    Led Zeppelin

Song Title: The Song Remains the Same (on Houses of the Holy, released 73)

Album Title: The Song Remains the Same (double live album, recorded 73 and released 76)

They also did one "the other way round", but I don't know if this counts

Album Title: Houses of the Holy (released 73)

Song Title: Houses of the Holy (on Physical Graffiti, released 75)

Another, similar one I came up with is as follows:

    Tiamat

Song Title: The Sleeping Beauty (on Clouds, released 92)

Album Title: The Sleeping Beauty (live mini-album, released 94)

For those of you who don't know anything about Tiamat, I can only say you don't know what you are missing - in my opinion, the best Swedish band around at the moment: a perfect mix of death/doom metal, with excellent musicians and a fantastic atmopshere. Check them out! And for those who do know Tiamat and like them: I'm going to see them next Wednesday (they are supporting some bunch called Black Sabbath, but I'm only really going to see Tiamat). (I nearly forgot: try the latest album "Wild Honey" first. It's certainly good enough to make you play something other than JUST Dream Theater).

stay safe and have a good weekend

At first it was tough to discover DT fans. Now that problem is solved. But does any one else out there listen to Ray Lynch or Kitaro. They are new age artists and the only other person I know that listens to them is my brother. The subscribers on this list have varied musical tastes, so I'm sure some listen to these two artists. Never heard much on them from this list, though.

Hello again... Got a question that's been bugging me... If anyone knows the answer to this or knows how I can find out, please let me know...

On eMpTyV there was a series called 'Dead at 21', I'm sure some of you have seen it... Well... on the last episode, when they were at the 'fake' Dr. -what-ever-his-name-was-'s house... The episode closed with a shot of a fountain - two doves with blood coming out of the fountain. As the credits start to roll, they play a pretty cool song... I haven't been able to figure out what it is or who does it... Sounds like Billy Squire??? or someone similar maybe? Anyway, if anyone knows this... please help me out.

Remember to vote for John P. on the GFTPM Readers' Poll!

    Thanks, Later!

P.S. Wouldn't it be funny to hear Lenier whining '_Dr. Smith_' just once... Would sound kinda funny coming from a Minbari....

    Later!

I tried to subscribe to the Dream Theater mailing list by sending "Subscribe ytsejam Michael Stover" to ytsejam@arastar.com. I got back a message basically telling me to try again without putting a request on the first line, whatever that means. so I have including the above explanation before:

I went into the local used CD store today and saw Building Blox for $9.25. I am under the impression that this CD is very hard to find. If anyone on the 'Jam would like me to pick it up for them, just let me know. I looked at the track listing and the songs were all from their other CD's except for one unreleased tune. The liner notes said it was limited edition.

ok, Fates' work doesn't jump out at you the first listen (and make sure you're *listening* and not just *hearing*; HUGE difference). it's not supposed to "jump out at you". this is why Fates is so amazing! everything they do is very subtle and if you don't pay attention - ie. just passively hear the music - then you'll say "What's the big deal about this?"

as i've posted before, to fully appreciate Fates, one must actively listen. that means picking individual instruments or parts and following only that and looking/listening at/to how that piece fits in with the rest to form the whole.

again, Fates' music, when broken down, can be rather simple pieces. simple to listen to; simple to play. but it's when you take all these "simple" individual pieces and put them together to form the whole, the song, *that's* when one notices how amazing the song is. a bunch of "simple" pieces put together to form a "complex" form. so "complex" that if you're not *listening*, you'll miss it.

DT on the other hand, sometimes does subtle stuff but most of the time it's striaght-forward and in-your-face. this is fine. this is good. it's just a different approach than Fates takes. some people prefer DT's method to Fates. some like both methods. some think i should shut up now...

so, ummm, what was i saying? oh yeah :) it takes time - at least from the people i've talked to - for Fates to grow on you. and that's what they do; grow. i couldn't stand them when i first started listening. all this "simple" meaning "complex" and vice versa made me really pissed off at them. but i kept listening (because i *had* to and because i needed to grow up :) and they grew on me slowly. now, 3.5 years later, i'm not caught w/o at least one of their disks in my car :)
