Sorry, ther'es no DT coment on this...
I'm looking for some news about Iron Maiden, and their new album X Factor.
Does anyone knows anything? I've just bought the single Man On The Edge, and I
want to know if the album has been already released in US or somewhere else...
Are there any Iron's mailing list just like Ytsejam or something like that?
Please, if you are a Maiden fan, E-mail me!!!
Sorry about no DT coment!

IKKLESTICK, I totally agree. If it's not a 7-string, it's got to be a
six string with the six lowest strings from a 7-sting set. The low B
does not buzz at all, and sounds as of it has as much tension as the rest
of the strings - making me think that it was not a "tuning down" of the
low E. I tuned my guitar down a 4th, as if it was a 7-string set, and I
could play the, intro no problem. I had to fuck with the truss rod,
though. Any thoughts?
BTW - The best solo award has to go to _A Fortune in Lies_.

Hello all,
If you want to hear a new version of ACOS with the "mercy f*ck" line
in it, I suggest you get a boot of the NJ Old Bridge show. I got it
and it is in there. (Thanks, Brian!) And to all of you F*ck word fans
out there, James sings it once and says it once during that show...
The JP guitar. I saw the ad for it the night before I heard about it
in the YJ. I was told that there would be 1000 issued, each with a
certificate of authenticity signed by JP... (now any of you guitar
fans out there that go to his clinic could get the guitar itself signed...
ahhhh....heaven!) Shame I don't know how to play!!!!!!!!
Jeffrey Furry bombed you a big uuencoded message. Jeff, if you're out
there, try resending it but this time in Sun's mailtool, if you click and
drag it from somewhere else, put it in the body of the message, not as
an attachment. If you used Attachments -> File -> Add... to get it there,
put the cursor in the message window and hit the right mouse button and
use File -> Open... instead. This will translate it and put it in the
body of the message and not as an uuencoded attachment. What a geek I am! ;-)
Please take me off of the Kevin Moore dubs list. I have accepted another
job (starting in 2 weeks) and I won't have a chance to do dubs for a while.
(I am being assigned to a site in Virginia for a bit. Hell, I will even
be unsubscribed from the YJ for a bit :( ) As soon as I get back on the
'Net I will resubscribe. For those of you who I spoke to about getting a
dub, don't worry, I'm still here for about 2 weeks. Send them in!!!! If
you have any questions about it, drop me an email and I'll give you my
home address/phone number so that way it doesn't look like I have disappeared!

There is an official Metal Blade mailing list, but most Fates discussions take place on Ytsejam (which, after all, is about Dream Theater and *related bands*).
> I'm pretty ignorant of how > something like the Jam gets started, but isn't there enough interest out > there to get something like that going for FW?
It doesn't appear that way. The problem is, if you start a list like that, will there be enough stuff to talk about? As long time subscribers will attest, there are dry periods when there isn't enough to talk about. It took a couple of years to get enough people here that there's actually traffic every day--I suspect it would take longer to get a Fates list up to critical mass.

Dream Theater: A Change of Seasons
There is an alternate universe that exists coextensive with our own, a shadow reality in which one key development in our musical history happened differently. The point on which the bifurcation turns is the rebellion of raw punk rock vitriol against ornate arena-prog excess. In our universe, this uprising struck a fatal wound into the heart of popular appreciation of progressive rock, and baroque musical ambition hasn't stood much more than an incidental chance here ever since. In the universe next to ours, though, it recovered. Punk's rhetorical point was a valid and important one, establishing that Keith Emerson didn't have to be the model for the modern musician, but in this other universe the masses didn't extend the argument to hold that overwhelming technical mastery and compositional sophistication were inimical to rock and roll. Green Day sold millions in this other universe, as well, but so did Marillion. Over there Clive Nolan is a millionaire, Yes never had to make Big Generator, Queensryche didn't use "Silent Lucidity" as a single, and Rush even has some female fans. Progressive and symphonic rock flourish, and there are even more prog fans than there are bands.
Dream Theater is probably the most prominent interloper from this other universe at the moment, especially as Queensryche have moved into more conventional song structures of late, and become naturalized. Intimidatingly accomplished, technically, Dream Theater still has an aggressive metal edge that wins them converts among the otherwise intolerant. James Petrucci's blistering guitar parts partially conceal the complicated musical arrangements and tricky rhythmic contortions, and though their songs do have the telltale tendency to come in at around eight minutes more often than three, they rarely sound epic in the protracted way that a Yes album side or a cohesive Marillion song-suite can. "Lie", the lead single from their 1994 third album Awake, sounded surprisingly like a straightforward rock song, especially in its 5:00 edited form.
This five-track EP, released to fill the time until the next proper Dream Theater album comes out next year, confirms both Dream Theater's relative accessibility and their essential progressive core. The latter is in clear evidence in the title track, a sprawling twenty-three minute opus that was apparently a staple of the band's live show for years before incessant pestering from members of the band's email list finally convinced them to commit it to record somehow. It's got every essential aspect of a timeless prog-rock masterpiece, including roman-numeraled sections, instrumental passages with titles like "The Crimson Sunrise", "The Darkest of Winters" and "The Inevitable Summer", lines like "Tripping through the life fantastic" and "I've lived my life, but now must move on", and stilted bits of spoken verse. I'd never seen this live, but it's easy to see why fans would have latched onto it. It's pretty clearly the band's most ambitious work to date, and a superb showcase for their myriad virtues, from Petrucci's flamboyant and bruising guitar to John Myung's lithe bass, Mike Portnoy's breathtaking drumming, James LaBrie's rich voice and new keyboardist Derek Sherinian's atmospheric synthesizers. It's expansive without ever seeming to meander, complicated without ever sounding arbitrary, aggressive without ever losing track of the guiding melodic themes, and it takes itself seriously without getting mired in pretension. It's nothing short of astonishing to me that the band is capable of playing this thing all the way through, without the benefit of sheet music. Actually, most of the individual parts are astonishing to me, as well, even in isolation. For anybody who thinks this variety of progressive metal is regrettably underrated, this is quite possibly the song of the year. Go now, and buy.
Historically, twenty-three minutes of music would have been quite enough for a plausible "EP", but Dream Theater has taken the very CD-centric stance that even fifty-eight minutes, which would have necessitated a double-album on vinyl, can be seen as a minor interim release if the conditions are right. The four other tracks they fill the disc with are live recordings from a unique cover show they did at Ronnie Scott's in London, back in January. The first one is a long medley of the Elton John songs "Funeral for a Friend" and "Love Lies Bleeding". Sherinian does play piano on this, but even without that overt reference, this cover does a remarkable job of being true to both Elton's original spirit and Dream Theater's own nature. Elton ought to do more heavy metal.
The second cover, the one isolated non-medley of the set, is of Deep Purple's "Perfect Strangers", from their 1984 album of the same name. To old-time Deep Purple fans this may seem like an odd choice, but Perfect Strangers happens to be the only Deep Purple album I have, and I'm thrilled to hear the song given such a rousing updating here. LaBrie even manages to avoid making me miss Ian Gillan, which is quite an accomplishment. Next they run through a Led Zeppelin medley of "The Rover", "Achilles Last Stand" and "The Song Remains the Same". I was never a Led Zeppelin fan, so this part isn't as interesting to me as it probably will be to others. The final track, though, called "The Big Medley", returns firmly to my musical youth. In an inspired series of segues they manage to cram into ten minutes pieces of Pink Floyd's "In the Flesh?", Kansas' "Carry On Wayward Son", Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", Journey's "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" (that they manage not to slip into parody during this section is pretty phenomenal, and leads me to very disturbing thoughts that maybe I ought to pick up Journey's greatest hits one of these weeks), Dixie Dregs' "Cruise Control" and Genesis' "Turn It On Again". Hearing such often-dismissed end-of-the-Seventies fare reverently resurrected as a past one doesn't have to be ashamed of really pleases me. Not, mind you, that I bought any of these records at the time.

Here it goes:
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!! Evrything about it is great! Making it defintely worth the money and the wait...this is a MUST HAVE for any DT fan!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another Day: Hey Mike, where did you get this version? It must have been from someone realy realy cool :) Anyway, the clarity of the whole CD surpases any other boot of its nature. Amazing. This version of ANOTHER DAY is beautiful and VERY laid back.
Lifting Shadows Off a Dream: Mike, you were right, this is a very good rendition of the song that is just as good (is not better) than the origional. I like Myung's bass work. As in the words of James LaBrie before evry song they do live: CHECK THEEEES AAAOOOUUTT!!!
Wait For Sleep: WOW! This is the first time that I had heard this version. Man, it gives me a whole new respect for this song. This whole CD is great homework music because its so relaxing and laid back.
Silent Man: Nothing new, bubt great nonetheless.
Long Island Expressway: Everyone has GOT to hear this. This fuckin' rulz!!! I never would've even imagined Lie being jammed this way.
Tears: Again, nothing new, but great because of the exquisitely clear sound (a world of improvement over the version on SUBCON)
O Holy Night: I prefer James singing this over Charles. Yes I do. I'll be playing this version around Chrsitmas time more than the SUBCON version.
Perfect Strangers: If I had like the origional song, then I would've like this cover or the version on ACOS. but I guess its okay. If you like the one on ACOS, you'll love this one.
6:00: Pretty cool, it sounds like a demo-type of recording, but much clearer.
Caught In A Web: Same as above.
EXTRA TRACK 1 (won't mention the name because the liner notes didn't) Very intersting, but too bad the whole song wasn't on here. kind of a tease, but also very cool.
EXTRA TRACK 2: One of the few songs from this band that I do like. I'm glad DT decided to do it. Very very cool...
Mike, you've outdone yourself. I am very glad that you were able to pull this off. Man, what a fucking great guy. Hey, ytsejam, give this guy a fucking standing ovation will ya?!!!!!

On the 7 String Acoustic topic. Yes, 7 Strings are made. The are a few 7 String acoustics like was mentioned in previous jams but they are predominantly custom work and very expensive. There are also big hollow body arch top jazz guitars that are 7 strings to facilitate those walking bass lines that jazz guitarists like to incorporate. And yes there are 7 string electrics as we all know.
The Ibanez was the most popular but is now discontinued. Other companies have dabbled in the 7 String market but no one backed it up like Ibanez. I think the general public is scared of a 7 String so they didn't sell well. I work for a music store that is the local Ibanez distributor and knowing them, if the JPM-100 sells well and/or DT has a commercial success hit with a 7 String Song you could quite possibly see a John Petrucci Signature model 7 String.
For ACoS, in the new Guitar Shop Article, Petrucci said he used and old Gibson Acoustic for the recording. (which probably isn't a 7 string) is is most likely strung with very heavy strings and tuned like a 7 string that is missing a high e string B E A D G B. Which if anyone has seen the transcripition to LIE in Guitar for the Practicing Musician this is what they suggest for those without a 7.
Sorry for the length, When I get on that guitar subject.......

That's not necessarily true. If the low E is a heavy gauge string, it will still be fairly tight when tuned down to B.

Hey folks! Just to add my two cents on this Marillion thing, I think that the new album, Afraid of Sunlight, is excellent (with the exception of one silly song, Cannibal Surfer Babe). I wasn't sure if I liked it at first, but I've since listened to it a zillion times and truly love it. It's really interesting, so give it a chance. It's definitely not a very rocking album, but more sensitive and introspective. Unlike some, however, I happen to be a fan of both the Fish and Post-Fish Marillion (except the crappy lite-rock of Holidays in Eden), and think people that slag the new stuff (especially Brave, which I think is as good as anything they did with Fish) without giving it a chance. And now on to some Change of Seasons stuff. First of all, I also think the intro is just a 6-string acoustic tuned down to B. My reason for thinking this is that, first, I've never heard of a seven string acoustic, and second, the ringing open-D string has the very bright sound of an unwound string, which is what it would be on a detuned 6. I agree with someone saying the part with the higher open strings is just John playing a regular 6-string. It doesn't matter that it's two different guitars, cause he'll probably play it on the 7-string electric live anyway. Second, is anyone else disappointed with Petrucci's solo? It's ok, but I get the distinct feeling that the whole time he was playing he was saying to himself: "I will not shred, I will not shred. . ." I keep waiting for it to take off, but it never does. I listened to the DoE version the other day, and that solo is in a whole different realm--it gives me chills every time, especially followed by the guitar-keyboard harmony thing, which is one of the coolest things they've done. I love the freight train keyboard thing following the solo, but I think changing the solo section leaves it a weaker song. One consolation, at least we can always listen to both versions, and get the strong points of each. Finally, I do think the new version is overall a more well-written song, but I wish there was a little more "playing" in it, if you know what I mean. About bass pedals, hell yeah DT uses them live! I'm not a big fan of Surrounded, but when they play it live, Myung uses bass pedals during the minor key portion towards the end, making your stomach rumble!! I love bass pedals, (the digital stuff will never match the sound of the classic Taurus pedals, though), but unfortunately they don't sound nearly as cool on CD as live. There you go. Sorry for the length!

Ugh! Very bad/weird week. I haven't read the 'jam since Sept. 28 (it's Oct. 6 now). So I'm catching up.
> DT is coming to Connecticut on December 27th.
Hey! That's my birthday!!! I wanna go! ---------- > I distinctly heard Sherinian miss his Cues and come in Late > in several places although I admit that those Places are no > longer So Obvious to me
No you did not. This is a STUDIO version. That means that if you make a mistake, you go back and fix it. For goodness sake, I'm recording stuff on an 8 track with only 2 tracks available for me and there are no mistakes at all even though I can't play the stuff live (yet ;). ---------- > You should have seen them going on for weeks about "Christ > what have you done" versus "Christ, what have you done"... > :)
Hey man! I was involved in that one :). The 'jam is cooler than TNMS though ---------- > 01'40" Myung plays a really cool myxolidian bit in 42/3rd > time sig here
You know. There is no such time sig as 42/3 (heh heh - this is a joke. Let's not start the time sig "discussion" again :).
> Pettruci changes between phrygian and godknowswhat
godknowswhat isn't a mode. ---------- > See what I mean? I'd like to get some kind of list that I > can display on my computer's screen and then listen to the > songs.
Yeah man. I totally agree. I still haven't found all the parts of Erotomania that are in other songs. ---------- I seem to have missed Jason Fickett's "review" of ACOS but I think I'm glad that I didn't. But, if someone has it and wouldn't mind emailing it to me, that would be cool. I promise not to respond to the 'jam about it. ---------- Like I said, I'm real behind but Jason Hartman wrote: > If I'm ever on trial for murder, give me a jury of Dream > Theater fans and I'm sure I'll walk away a free man. Ashamed to be an American.
HUH???!! What the hell are you talking about and why are you ashamed to be an American. No offense to the non-American's on the list but where the hell else would you rather live? ---------- > FICKETT WROTE: F>Admittedly, all of the members of DT know > how to play their instruments, F>and they do neat tricks > with tempo, scales, and all that shit. But the > > I dont read this as attacking DT for being good musicians. > He grants that the members of DT can play very well, tempo > changes, ect. No, he's attacking them. "neat tricks"? That's sarcastic. My old teacher was married to a woman who once said to him "do have to always twang that guitar?" He said, "she reduced 30 years of work to 'twanging'." Fickett's making the same kind of remark here. ---------- To all the guys who don't like to read long posts, why on earth do you think that anyone cares?! I hate reading "don't post longs posts" posts. I also hate "who cares if you don't like long posts" posts. So skip 'em. You said that you do anyway, so why whine some more? The thing I hate most is whiny people. (if anyone notices any hypocrisy in this post, please let me know. I hate that too :). ---------- HA! I finished reading the old ytsejam's. I'm now caught up. Gotta go teach a bunch of goofball kids how to play bass now :\.

I was wondering. I have been listening to ACoS alot these past days and I can't help but say that the whole song is great but there is one part that gets me going everytime. At 13:00 into the song the music gets very somber yet so powerfull and full of life. It gives me the goose bumps every time I hear it. Anyone else agree?
Also...About the covers: I think that all the covers were done incredibly well and that all the bands that did the originals should be honored that a band actually went out of thier way to practice them over and over till they were just about damn near close to perfect! Just think about how much rehearsing they had to do to get it that perfect! Alot! I know the covers could not and never will replace the originals but it is nice to see that DT's covers were done with taste!
Still looking for people who might want to get together and go to the show at the Malibu. Are you a DT fan that lives near me? I am in Central Jersey. Email me! (Damon...I know you are ...HEARING...this so of course you are welcome to come too! :)
Till later,
Fred

There was a list of info posted about each song on Subcon a while back. If anyone has a copy, I'd really appreciate it if you'd mail it to me. I've been making dubs for people and I'd like to distribute the info along with the dub. Thanks alot!
Later, Andrew
