actually they do use them on stage. john myung plays them. he uses the
roland PK-1 midi pedals, the one octave version, C to C i think.

myung triggers all the samples (voices, effects, etc.) with the pedals and
also does some low bass tones and high string pads too i think. i am not
too sure on the melodic part the pedals play live, since they are just
controlling synth modules in the rack, which could just as easily be
controlled by kevin/derek's keyboards. it is really hard to tell. but
i do remember myung triggering all of the samples with his foot on the
    roland...

I just finished reading Arabian Nights, and as I was going
through the tales, I kept thinking "no fucking way, this _can't_ be a
coincidence this many times..." and turning to my lyrics sheet from the
Awake CD, and checking things against it.

I've come to the conclusion that Silent Man is about Arabian
Nights the way Pull Me Under is about Hamlet. I'm a bit short on time and
I want the chance to consolidate all my references on this, but it's a
bit too blatant to ignore, the same way the PMU-Hamlet connection was. So
I'll be back with more on this later. I'm also checking Voices... it's
not as blatant, but it's there... especially in the middle section, but
there's a lot of DT/John/whoever's own religious problems in there in
    their theme as well.

            More on this later...

    Hi jammers,

I actually had thought of this about a week or so ago, but since Jay produced
the alternate Killing Hand lyrics, and someone suggested a 74 min DT track,
then someone suggested they produce a box set based on their 24 hour jam
session, how bout this: DT release a 9 CD box set featuring one song (nine
movements of course) chronicalling everyones favorite (and finally over)
trial. Kinda sorta like Yess Tales For Topographic Oceans, eh? Okay its
stupid, but I thought I suggest it. (Maybe Mike P will get a kick out of this
    post if he sees it...)

My $0.02 about DT's EP - A Change Of Seasons.

This album blows anything I've heard, DT or otherwise, away.
The covers were great, I hope the decide to release it fully as a live CD.

ACOS...Without a doubt, this is DT's absolute best work to date. It's got it
all...emotion, passion, power, everything. I hope their next disc can match it
for it's sustained brilliance. Awake was really good, but I&W had a sustained
brilliance about it that Awake just didn't equal. ACOS was, of course, written
in the I&W days, so it has that.

Also, without a doubt, Dream Theater is the best band out currently. I think
Derek was a more than worthy replacement for Kevin and it's only a matter of
time before they break out and hit the big time. As I said...sooner or later the
world will wake up and realize what they've been missing. And DT constitutes 98%
of all my music listening right now.

Prog rock's coming back... and DT is leading the onslaught! :)

Yea, 'twas I who said he'd be going to a John P. clinic here in
Atlanta (time approximate after working at the Georgia Rennaissance
    Festival -- I sell swords there :)). I don't have the microequipment
needed to record the clinic, and besides, as you pointed out, John is
"down" on bootlegging.... I'd hate to go against that.

Finally, I can take a short breather from programming to let you all know my opinions on ACOS (like you care). The week of release was a very DT week for me - I picked up ACOS on the 19th, as well as the Silent Man single, and that Friday I received InstruMental I & II (thanks, Tim).

I'd been listening to the Subcon version of ACOS quite a bit to "prepare", so the changes threw me off. My main problem with the song was the feeling that I was being held back by the slightly slower tempo. But, somewhere around the 10th-15th listen, I decided I really like it. It took a while for me to like the Subcon version, too.

The following Sunday, thanks to the miracle of modern cd changer technology :^) I did a mini-ACOS marathon: InstruMental II -> Subcon -> ACOS EP versions <whew> If you've got the capability, I recommend it.

It's really nice to be able to listen to the covers recorded well, instead of this terrible sounding tape I'd been listening to. Of course, I still want the rest of the show as well.

And now Acoustic Dreams is coming! One helluva DT month! How am I supposed to find the time to listen to all my new New Model Army cds, huh?

How I got into DT: a couple months before I&W was released, there were people talking them up on a.m.r-n-r.prog (I think, I don't have time to read many newsgroups anymore). Anyway, between that buzz and a friend in Chicago hearing the same buzz, I decided I'd check it out. Unfortunately, nobody in Minneapolis gave a damn, so I had to special order the disc, sight unheard. The rest is history. I called the local radio station the first time I heard PMU and thanked them for playing DT. The dj was stunned I knew of them. I didn't see any of the videos until I bought LiT a couple months ago, so fans like you are the reason I'm here. And I can proudly say I've passed the favor on to half a dozen others.

Well, back to programming. That wasn't so bad, now, was it? pg 2 days til Soul Coughing one month til Boiled in Lead numerous misc. shows in between

    Hi there,

After three long months without Ytsejam, I've finally rejoined the list...

In the last 'jam, "mmetzger" <mmetzger@bostech.com> wrote: >I am curious if anyone recalls ever seeing DT use bass pedals in concert. >Have seen them three times and dont recall seeing them, myself. Well, I saw John Myong playing a bass pedal (some KORG thing, if I remember it right) in a concert I visited last march. He mainly used it to trigger the samples (via MIDI) in the Awake songs. But I think he also played some bass tones on it during the Metropolis encore. But I'm not 100% sure...

    Have a nice day,

    Guenter

Get a grip Ben Laussade! Life will deal you cards that are much harder to play than that.

Is there anybody else out there as tired as I am of reading Mercy F____ in every y-jam? Sometimes I think this list is primarily composed of fifteen year old kids that marvel at the "F" word and probably have never performed the act they espouse by using that word. There are over 600,000 words in the english language. I can hear profanity anytime, anywhere, I don't want to pay for it in the music I listen to. My attraction to Dream Theater is because they are progressive in thought and they apply that to their music. It would be nice to move on to something else, just like DT does. Understand?

    To who re-wrote TKH:

Bravo! Too bad OJ got away with it,..... for now that is. If african Americans would stop acting like victims of society perhaps they would cease to become as such.

    Hi,

    1) Thanks to all the Jammers who sent me information about Fates Warning. The 'No Exit' CD is no longer available over here, but I have managed to get some FW stuff taped (thanks Patricia!), including 'The Ivory Gate Of Dreams'. I have now decided to get 'Perfect Symmetry' and 'Inside Out', and possibly 'Chasing Time'. Thanks again!

    2) There's been a lot of posts comparring the studio ACoS to the DoE ACoS. When I bought ACoS I hadn't heard the DoE version, so I had nothing to compare it to. It has been interesting reading the reactions of some of the jammers. BUT! Now I have a copy of the DoE version (thanks again Patricia!!!) and I find myself in the opposite position - i.e. having played the studio version to death and got used to that, now playing the live version and hearing the different lyrics/old parts etc. and thinking, 'THAT part's missing...'! I was quite surprised at the live version, there's not really THAT much difference (apart from the intro.) until 'Another World', which lyrically has changed dramatically! There's also bits missed out of 'The Inevitable Summer' (the 'train' bit), although there is a bit in there that is not in the studio version that really ROCKS! (Is it just me or can I hear a bit of Bombay Vindaloo in this part?!!) Remember this is my view, comparing from the 'other side ', so to speak! I though it would make a change posting this view instead of endless 'Oh it's not as good as the live version..' views. (I actually prefer the studio version, although I do now find myself yelling PLEASE DON'T GO!! while listening to it!)

    3) Thanks to Bafu Vai and James Peele for splitting my sides with their new lyrics! And a big 'lighten up!' to the guy who called Bafu an asshole - get a life and sense of humour!

    4) What's wrong with calling the 'Antiquities' CD 'Mercy Fuck'? It's a good laugh! They're forgotten lyrics, aren't they?!!!

    5) Sorry about the length (especially to Graham B.!!!) - I'll be good and drop my sig.!!!

    Andy.
