Hi 'jammers
I haven't had a chance to read jams 1003, 1005 and 1006 (where oh where could
that 1004 be??? :) ) but I just wanted to mention I received my Acoustic
Dreams discs (#12, #33) and all I can say is THANK YOU MIKE BAHR!!! They are
awesome - especially the sound quality on the first 6 tracks - they alone are
worth the price, IMO. Well, I got some Jams to read, so I'll shut up and let
everyone give a more detailed report on AD. C-ya

Now who's going to be first to tell this guy that on the Ytsejams it's
against the rules to make a tag comprised solely of darkness?

Or should that be _long_ posts?
While I'm glad people think my posts are generally substantive
(except, possibly, this one... heh) I'm gonna have to offer a dissenting
opinion here...
I rather like longer posts as long as they _go_ somewhere. I
don't even mind if there are no par-breaks, or if it's a "continuous"
train of thought, as long as it isn't something to say "I like DT
oooooooooooh how I like DT I wish they were a chick band so I could
fantasize about them oooooooooh they the best" ... but usually that's not
the case. Believe it or not, I even read _all_ the posts about metal
tapes, and the meter in The Mirror, because I wanted to understand both
topics. But I usually skip posts about Echolyn and Genesis, since neither
band has really hit me yet, though I think both are good.
Short posts are really good for the Jam though, brevity is the
soul of wit, and if there's anything we are getting in about the most
appropriate quantity, it's humor. It's not a sordid, melancholy mailing
list, and yet it's not utterly ridiculous and goofy like the SDOA BBS was
back in the days of old. To get an idea how things were there, one must
only look at what SDOA stood for... Small Dogs On Acid.

Ya know, I was watching Live At Tokyo today and I just HAVE to ask this...
When Portnoy goes into his oh, 8 minute drum solo, half way through, he gives
this signal to Petrucci as to say "Let's do it now!". Then Petrucci and
Portnoy echo each other in some sort of weird Death Metal chant or something.
It's as if they expect us to recognize it or something! Well, me not being an
afficianado of weird Death Metal chants, am asking you, The Jam what you think
it is that they're playing. I've heard that sometimes that MP sometimes puts
some Iron Maiden or Pantera into his solos (NOT that I'm suggesting that they
are death metal bands!!!), so is this the case, or is it some other band?
Please let me know. Let us all know, because for God's sake, the fate of the
world depends on it!!!
=)
I should take another chill pill, man! ;)
This is and shall always be...

Hello everyone!
How the hell are ya???
Mike, I'm anxiously awaiting Acoustic Dreams! I rush home to the mailbox
after work every day!
I thought Jay Peele's version of 'The Killing Hand' was pretty funny....
As for the interpretation of the lyrics for 6:00... pretty interesting...
I'll have to go back and see what the FAQ said about these lyrics... I've
been wondering about the lyrics to a couple other songs too... 'Lie' and
'Under a Glass Moon', guess I'll check out the FAQ....
Hockey season is nearly upon us!!!!! Go Pens!!!!
Later all.....

I can't believe it!
I forgot to thank another illustrious 'Jammer for his recent light-
hearted contribution that we can place on our coffee table for all visitors to
see. "Jay Peele, come on down!"
Your "The Killing Hand" OJ Style (would that be original or extra
pulpy?) was a SCREAM!!! You would not believe the tension over here in SoCal
because of that. People have been flying off their rocker (and some that are
jumping our of their handle :) because of this. I have, so far, spent three
separate class periods discussing this topic, and most of the time its a clash
between the Protectors and the Race-Carders. All I can say is, he is going to
get his ass nailed to the wall in civil court. It ain't over yet, honey. And
civil trials can take LONGER than the murder ones (no pun intended).
Oh well! Either way, he is still guilty of placing himself in the
"wrong place at the wrong time." I am a firm believer that "they" (whoever
they may be) can not just take some Joe Schmoe of the street and frame him for
something. He had to be doing something wrong to get himself caught up in that
situation. That's why people are always saying "Protect Your Own," and C.Y.A.:
"Cover Your Ass."
That's all I have for now. BTW, flames not tolerated, but critcism
(constructive AND otherwise) accepted and appreciated.

Well, I have an older sister who's a College Freshman, however she isn't
exactly a trend setter. She listens to Hootie & the Blowfish. Nobody else,
except for a 28 year old cousin who got me into AC/DC and Metallica, heh.
Beleive it or not, my Dad (who's 46) actually likes DT. He especially gets

Somebody was king enough to copy the Kevin Moore demos for me, but
neglected to write the song titles down. Could some kind individual
please post the song list? Thanks in advance.
Also, I am on a search for Dream Theater posters. I have promo
posters for Faith No More- King For a Day... and King's X- Faith Hope Love
which I would be willing to trade if someone is interested. Let me know.
One more thing. Has anyone out there ever heard an explanation of
the lyrics to Voices and the Silent Man by JP? How about any other
memeber of the band? If not, anyone want to offer up their own ideas?
(I'm sure that'll get a response).

Hello all:
To all the people on this list who are too sensitive to take a joke...
lighten up!!! I APPRECIATE the pungent sarcasm and stinging wit of some of the
more infamous 'Jammers, like Bafu Vai. Bud, your last post had me ROLLING!
That ink bottle quip laid me out on the floor (a scene unto itself, considering
I am sitting in the school's computer lab with about 75 tranced CS, ECE, and
CIS majors feverishly attempting to complete projects due at 5:00 tonight). If
it wasn't for the light-heartedness of 'Jammers like you and Dave (kylania),
this place would be boring.
But just remember what the great philosophers say (don't ask me who,
'cuz I'm making this up), you can't have the yin without the yang, so we need
ALL of the 'Jammers on the list, from Bafu, to Jimmy, and all the rest. This
just makes us more like one big, happy family. Yes, happy. Not one of you
can tell me that you have not been thrilled, enthralled, or cracked a little
smile at least once while reading the 'Jam. And think, if we didn't have all
if this lovely tension, we'd be boring, like the Flanders.
And if you STILL don't agree, do what I did and UNDIGEST. That way, if
you start to read a "long-ass" post or something that sounds like it belongs in
the crapper, you can just delete it and continue on to the next letter. (It's
also a helluva lot easier to pull out the stuff you like.) BTW, if this is
your decision, DON'T POST YOUR REQUEST TO THE 'JAM!!! Read the "Welcome To The
YTSEJAM" letter that you received upon intiation and it'll tell you what to do.
There, my dos centavos.
* * RANT MODE OFF * *
One last thing, my "Judgment in the Age of ACOS" will have a part II,
it is still in the works. "Coming to a 'Jam near you!!!"

This is my first attempt at posting to the list, so bear with me if i screw
up somewhere along the line...
I'm just writing because i came across some DT material that i found
interesting. I was talking to my bud during english class (what else is there
to do??) and i mentioned Dream Theater. He said "that name sounds familiar"
So he left it at that. the next day, he comes to school and gives me a
videocassette. He said his brother's friend subscribes to "ROCKvideo
Monthly", which i had never heard of. He pointed to the box and said "Dream
Theater?" and i looked and i said "DREAM THEATER!!!" It's a compilation of
metal videos for the releases around June '93. The third video is 'Another
Day'. I've heard that it didn't make MTV's playlist, so i kinda jumped at the
sight.
So, i havn't even gotten a chance to watch it yet, and i plan on doing
that right now. If there are a few folks who havn't seen it, i'll kindly do a
little review for ya in the future.
I saw 'Lie' once on MTV around last October or November, whenever DT
was on Headbanger's Ball (my first exposure to the band i might add). I liked
the video, but havn't seen it since. I haven't seen PMU or TTT at all... i'm
so deprived. I'm in a DT video fix right now. I think it would be cool of DT
to release a video compilation with their next album. The videocassette could
have all videos up to that point (especially 'The Silent Man'... that video's
gotta be good!!) plus one off of their new album. I guess it would be kinda
'neat' to do and to see.
Welp, i gotta go check this video out! later dudes!
Jeff.
All hail the mighty Ibanez, Axe of the Gods.

One of the reasons I love reading the jam is that I get to learn about all
the other bands that inspired Dream Theater, or are similar to them in some
way, or are progressive, etc. Anyways, a while ago I went to the local
Sunrise Records and listened to Fates Warning and Ozric Tentacles (they hav=
e
those 'try before you buy' stations set up in the store).
The Fates CD was Parallels. I had never heard them before, and I was looki=
ng
forward to hearing it, because that disc was #1 on my similarities engine
results (and with a real high weight, too). Now, I know that just about
everybody on the Jam likes this band, so please don't flame me, but I didn'=
t
really hear anything special. But then again, I didn't have all that much
time so I was kinda just skimming through the songs. I don't know if I
would've liked it more if I had time to listen to the whole thing, but
nothing jumped out at me like DT's songs do.
On the other hand, I was also really looking forward to hearing Ozric
Tentacles. I love instrumental songs/bands, 'cause with no vocals, you're
forced to listen to the music. The disc was Arborescence (their latest, I
think?). I liked this one from the start, and ended up buying it. It's ju=
st
so wonderfully weird! I love the mystic synthesizers, it reminds me of EPC=
OT
Centre. Anyways, I would like to hear more from this band. Any suggestion=
s
as to where I should go from here?
Thanx,

You said the guitarist from the band you just saw had a J.P model guitar.
I get even more jealous everyday, my roomate went home for a weekend and
he came back up here with a J.P model guitar -- Only 200 made
(supposedly) and he got one. $1050. Fortunately he lets me play some
time!! Good luck finding another one to anybody out there who wants
one. You can probably order one from Ibanez for at least double the
price since they will actually be custom making it for you!!

and I don't think Petrucci is playing with him...I think he's just
playing along with the sample. On the Awake tour, he was playing
along with a Slayer riff (I don't know which one) and of course,
Public Enemy's Chuck D..."Hear the drummer get WICKED!!!"

Bassists out there,
I have a question about ACOS: I have been playing guitar for 14 years
now, but something that Myung does on ACOS puzzles me. During one of the
mellow sections it sounds for a bit like Myung is playing harmonics, but
a few times he makes a really percussive sound and I don't hear a
harmonic. To me it sounds bad, but I was wondering how I can appreciate
what he's doing. Fill me in!
I don't know how one of the jammers didn't notice ACOS started with
lower-than-E notes! Also, I thought John's wah playing was tasteful in
Lie but now it's starting to get annoying, like near the end of ACOS.
Maybe John and Kirk can do a Cacophony-type deal using the wah exclusively!

Randall Braun asked about songs with the same name as an album from
the same group. How about the album Out of the Silent Planet by Kings X and
the song of the same title on Gretchen Goes to Nebraska? Of Fates Warning's
new collection named after Chasing Time, a song off of Perfect Symmetry?
C'mon, everyone here should have known those! :)
I'd like to say more, but hey, I wouldn't want to confuse anyone out
there who doesn't like that "reading" thing. God forbid we should have to
deal with a long message, you know, all those "ideas" and shit can get
pretty upsetting. We might have to "think" or something. That would suck.
Hey, how about we limit the lenght of the sentences we use too? Oh, and no
words over, say, eight letters long.
How about you knock on those wonderful signature files that take up
half the screen before you limit what I have to say, friend.
Long live the revolution (we won't need any guns). -Matt

i've seen DT twice and i'm positive that Mr. Myung was jammin' on pedals. in
fact, here's a bit from an article i typed up from BASS Player:
"...'I'm using all-MESA/Boogie amps and speakers, and I'm also using bass
pedals. My bass parts sound huge.'"
the entire article is available at my web site
<http://www.site.gmu.edu/~jjens/dt/> and at a couple other places :)

i'm pretty sure John used them on I&W and Awake; maybe on ACoS too...

>adding a lot high energy punch to the impact of those climatic moments.
i like 'em too...
>Are bass pedals just too old fashioned ??
are they? echolyn's ex-bassist used 'em. Yanni's bassist uses 'em. how 'bout
that Marillion bassist (i'm doin' really good on names tonite, eh?) i'm
considering getting a set...after a new cabinet...speaking of which, anyone
wanna buy my current rig? email me ;)

Message-ID: <m0t14Cw-0000HzC@donews.cts.com>
Hi All,
I was wondering if the tickets for the CT DT show are on sale yet? I
am in Madison, Wisconsin right now but I will be in Maine for X-mas
and I am willing to drive the five hours to see the show. Is
ticketbastard selling the tickets for this show? Or would some kind
soul out there be willing to buy me a ticket and I can send you a
check for it? I hope someone close to CT can help me since I have no
way of getting a ticket from here in the Midwest. I hope to hear from
someone soon. Take care.

On Mind Control and on the Live in Tokyo video, right after Portnoy hits
his sticks together and the crowd claps back, Petrucci cuts in with a
riff and he and Portnoy go at it for a bit, followed by an involved drum bit.
My roommate and I think that the one from Mind Control is part of
Slayer's "Raining Blood". Does anyone know what the snippet from Live in
Tokyo is from?
Here's the random thought. I've heard that Portnoy likes some
heavier bands, e.g. Napalm Death and others, and apparently someone in
the band is a Slayer fan. Wouldn't it be cool if DT would cover, say, a
classic Slayer song like Seasons in the Abyss in concert some time or
release it as a bonus track? (yes, I know, a lot of people will probably take
issue with me that SitA isn't a "classic" Slayer tune.) I wonder.
I wonder how LaBrie would handle that.
Dream Theater certainly incorporates a lot of styles. I wonder
what the predominant musical background of jammers is? I hear a lot of
jammers talking about Marillon/Fates Warning/Kings X/Q.ryche/Rush, but I
wonder what other tastes, mellower and/or heavier, y'all have. Mebbe we
can start to pin down the amazing phenomenon we all know and luv as

Jammers,
Hello! I just realized that Joe Satriani has a new album out! Could
someone please email me with some tour info? I live in NY, so any where in
the surrounding states would be cool! (I drove 6 hours to see DT!)
Anyways, I'm a big fan of his, so any help would be much appreciated.
Also, I play an Ibanez RG770. I really love this guitar, and I want to
replace the pickups in it. I was thinking of that DiMarzio "Air" pickup
that J.P. uses, has anyone tried it out? Thanks for the help in advance!

David--
I'm not going to put the tape in and check, but I think that riff that
Petrucci and Portnoy do together is Pantera from the Vulgar Display of Power
album. I think it's from the song "Fucking Hostile." Someone want to back me
up here?

Yeah, the UofA newspaper reviewed ACoS on their Oct. 5 edition. It's
really small, but here are some excerpts for those interested:
"This is true underground music now-Dream Theater has managed to survive
and flourish without the help from MTV or the current crop of
"alternative" radio stations. And,one day, they will rise again to crush
the legion of bands that only know three chords and can't find a way to
create a smooth transition between Dixie Dregs' "Cruise Control" and
Genesis' "Turn it on again."
I think they already have. :P

>>> Favorite Dream Theatre Solo
The guitar solo on the Live In Tokyo video. Absolutely one of the most
tasteful, well done solo's I've ever seen. So many guitarists seem to
think a solo is just for them to shred with no plan of action. JP's
solo was well built and flowed beautifully, yet still showed off his
chops. Good stuff.
