    Hello Jammers,

    General Stuff
    -------------
I keep thinking to myself, "Does Bafu Vai spend all day thinking about
what he is going to post to the digest? Or does this stuff come
naturally?" Actually I just think he is a madman! Keep the flammage alive!

    Complaining
    -----------
I think this has been said before, the reason we nitpick DT albums and
music is because we are the diehard fans who would purchase even a video
of James showing how to play softball. (some will see the irony of that
comment <grin>) So the music and lyrics get analyzed. At least most of
us aren't like the National Midnight Star readers (though I'm sure some
of us are on that digest) and talk about how Geddy's cat could destroy
the universe, and Cygnus is the name of my cow. Ughh... I had to get
out of there since they seem to be lacking an informant at the moment.
Ytsejam usually has up to the minute information on DT. OK, so now I'm
    complaining. <grin>

    Racism
    ------
First of all, I think we should drop this discussion, since it is very far
away from the topic of Ytsejam, and the spirit. My rule of thumb is that
sweeping generalizations of any sort are bad, and you can't judge people
as averages, especially when it is something like sex and race which
people have no control over. I'd be happy to spar over e-mail with
anyone who thinks racism doesn't exist, because it does.

    DT Aboveground
    --------------
This is silly, I cannot see a band who just released a 23 minute song as
a bunch of sellouts. As far as progressive music becoming popular again,
I don't think so. I figure that are a few more years of three chord
guitar rock being popular (I am being cynical, there are popular bands
that I like who have artistic merit (Pearl Jam, Sting, Van Halen, of
course this is arguable <grin>)) there will be a trend into sweeping
three chord keyboard driven songs again, yes I feel the 1980's style
music may return. (It is funny since I like a lot of those style songs,
but artistically the era was not the greatest IMO) Though I think the
era will be better than the 1980's version due to an increase in MIDI
technology. Then again, you never know. I'm hoping that their are
enough of us prog-fans on the computer nets to influence future
developments so that someday there may be a prog-TV station (if their are
going to be 1000s of channels, we should be able to get one of these
widely distributed) and we can play a block of music hosted by Mike
Portnoy and Bafu Vai. Featuring Metropolis, Lark's Tongues in Aspic Part I,
Close to the Edge, Misplaced Childhood Side 2, Letters, and Magnum Opus.

Would be cool...... I can always dream

    Later,

    Mike

So I'll post my 6:00 bit and > someone else do IF and send it :).

I think the problem with trying to understand Innocence Faded is that Petrucci wrote it...clarity is not his strong point as a lyricist (i.e. what the HELL is Under A Glass Moon about? is Voices pro- or anti- religion or both or neither?) His lyrics have a very elusive quality, which makes them fun to examine and open to lots of interpretations, but makes it kind of difficult to figure out what he really intends to say. A pretty stark contrast to Kevin, who is usually clear and, recently, even blunt, and Portnoy who cuts off the top of your head and shovels carpe diem directly into your brain.

To All: I hope Dream Theater becomes extremely popular AND retains their style. That way perhaps the next wave of musical trends will be spawned from Dream Theater as many before were from The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, The Eagles, Humble Pie, or even The Sugar Hill Gang. You reading this might not like any of those bands, but millions of people did and still do. If DT suddenly became "the next big sound," you'd have to consider all the people unacceptive of progressive metal would be feeling the same way you did about rap or grunge, which both had their beginnings in groups as exclusive as Dream Theater and the Ytsejams Mailing List.

I have no comment on the recent racism thread and I doubt I ever will. What I find odd about this list is that the "small" tangents, ie what hair products do the band members use, are crushed by the more focused 'jammers, while a discussion on racism, which has absolutely nothing to do with Dream Theater's music, seems to be accepted and leaped upon by many.

I myself have no focus, which is probably why I don't WASTE SPACE ON THE LIST by telling other people that they have no right to their own opinions and they are wasting my time. By the way, in my opinion (which is not an entity but a view extending from my mind, therefore has no arrogance or humility) that sort of post is the only real way to waste space on the Ytsejams.

As for OJ, my opinion has not changed: the moral tale to be learned from that event is simply that the justice system in America favors football over boxing. End of message.

---------- To Deebor: Excellent idea! But instead of "The Dream Theater Song-Interpretation Book," what do you think of "Dream Journal" as a title?

    ---------- To Mad Dog:

About James' vocals, the reason he sang in that particular style on I&W was not because of Charlie Dominici, but because of his extensive opera training. If you listen to the Winter Rose show, his singing is even more operatic than I&W. And I've never heard Coney Hatch (LaBrie's band before Winter Rose), but I've been told his singing was the same as the Winter Rose show. All in all, from voice-training to I&W, his vocal style had not changed much.

LaBrie has said many times that he wanted to show other facets of his voice and "get away from" the operatic stuff for a time. He felt he had much more to offer than the style in which he was trained.

All one has to do is listen to "6:00" to hear his efforts.

But BOC hasn't put out anything in almost 10 years! I thought _Imaginos_ was great. I see they still tour, but what happened? I think they have the ELP syndrome---- never (or all of a sudden, in ELP's case) put something out and expect to sell big venues. (If anyone ever gets the chance to see ELP live, btw do not miss them!!! They are one of the most incredible live acts I've seen, even if they are near retirement. Carl Palmer is a fantastic drummer!)

    > It's important that we show our support, though, because Elektra is > watching. Album sales for AWAKE here have flattened out and every > little bit helps;

This might mean that the next album will make or break them, at least here in the States. It would be a shame to have to buy future DT releases as imports. Or see them switch to a smaller label and make less money so everyone quits the band to try other projects. Have faith, DT, we *are* promoting you!

    > besides, Dream Theater deserves whatever we can > do to help sell their CDs and convert our friends to being DT fans. > These are OUR friends in a sense; it's the least I can do help put > bread on their tables.

I converted two of my friends after IAW came out; they now have everything official, plus some unofficial stuff. Another friend I bought LATM and WDADU for since he was unaware of those even though he's seen DT on the last two tours and has everything else. Still another never seems to have enough $$, so I've taken her to the last two concerts (last time, thankfully, since she got me on the Fates' tourbus !>)> and I bought her copies of the last three DT releases (I just sent her ACOS the other day).

I think DT is like is like Rush and QR--- they will hardly ever *lose* any of their fans. Having a radio hit from IAW really skewed the data; it wasn't a good representation of a core fandom. (Heck, even Rush has only had one mega-successful album (Moving Pictures)). I hope Elektra keeps the faith.

INFERNO is heading down to Tampa this weekend for the Mike Portnoy/Steve Smith drum clinic. We will be handing out "looking for drummer" flyers...

------------ I'm not going to touch the whole racial/political thing (especially on the jam), but I will say that it takes two wings to fly. Also, race has little to do with self defeating belief systems (you can see these in people of all races). Individualism persists regardless of race/gender/etc. (These are known as carrier variables and cause nothing) ---------------

Also, I don't want to keep DT underground at all. Good music deserves to be widespread...

I'd just like to make one comment on 6:00. I'm not going to go into a deep discussion. Anyway, the quotes in the song, "What about the honor of God, Aunt Kate? I know all about the honor of God, Mary Jane," is from an Irish short story called "The Dead." I forgot who wrote it and to tell you the truth, I didn't like the story much (had to read it in my college English Lit class). Still, I thought it was interesting when I came across those quotes in the story. I though, "Well now I know where DT got the quotes from." I was always wondering that. Now, where did DT get the REST of quotes on Awake from?

Someone on the Queensryche list (Screaming in Digital) suggested a while back that the quote in "The Mirror" which goes, "What are you doing here?" is Mary from Queensryche's "Suite Sister Mary" of off Operation: Mindcrime. In "Suite Sister Mary," Mary says something like "What are you doing here?" or "What are you doing out in the rain?" It sounds like the quote in "The Mirror."

It seems that most people on this list hate Portnoy's snare sound on ACOS.... why? No one said the song should be easy listening, just read the lyrics to figure that one out. Besides, listen to The Inevitable Summer, under JP's solo. Would any other snare sound work?

Speaking of the guitar solo, I think it's one of the best he's done. Sorry, I don't want every solo to be Bombay Vindaloo, Part II; that would ruin the effect of that whole part of the song (rewritten from Subcon/DOE version).

I just find it hard to imagine that DT wouldn't consider all the things that we criticize and carefully work through them. I mean, there's no obvious things like a triggered drum that I can hear...

    DAMN PEOPLE!

    1) For the people who don't want Dream Theater to "sell-out": If by "selling-out" you mean a band wanting to get popular, then almost every band is a sellout. You wouldnt slave away in a studio, play shows, and put out albums if you didn't want people to listen to you... and for those bands who aren't signed, most of them want to be... yes, there are bands who play just for fun in their basements and nobody sees them, but thats a differend story...

    2) For the people who say "I don't care if a band gets popular- if I like the music I will be into them just the same...". While I agree that we would all still be into DT if they got really popular, it would definatly take something away... one thing that people like about underground music is that it seems more special, like it is somehow talking to you- not to a million screaming teenage girls... For example, a friend of mine used to really be into Green Day many years ago before really anyone knew who they were... I didn't even really know who they were, but I knew that they were one of his favorite bands (dont ask me why... i dont know...). Anyway, now that they're huge, he still like them, but it's very annoying for him to know that there are lots of radio idiots who don't know shit about underground music who are into them... It just makes the music seem less special- it has nothing to do with being "cool" cause you listen to underground music... of course there are people who do that too, but I'm sure no DT fan would be at that level! Besides, people who don't like dream theater think that DT is cheesy, not cool and underground... so that means that we *really* must like them!

lets not go nuts on this thread... i think i've pretty much killed it... its a boring topic anyway... :)

You know, normally I don't re-post what other people have written, but this one was too good to just "comment" on:

    One word: AMEN.

You may remember me saying something along the lines of, "one of these days I'm just going to conform and post what I dislike about DT." Looks like I'm not alone, eh, Chris?

DT has said many times that they prefer the intimacy of large clubs/small arenas much more than large stadiums. They have also mentioned a tighter sound in clubs as opposed to the naturally messy reverb of stadiums. I can't imagine listening to music so complex with echos and reverberation running over everything. Mike, you're a great guy, I love ya man, but I'm going to have to disagree vehemently with you on this one.

After deleting a dozen digests due to mailbox overload I just read my first 'Jam in a long time.. I couldn't believe my eyes. Mr. Orenthal James Simpson and the racism issues have invaded our beloved list :-( I don't know how it got started, but I just hope it'll end soon. There's enough traffic as it is. Surely the aging of ACoS hasn't resulted in a total lack of DT-related topic.. Anyways, thanks to those of you who still talk about Dream Theater mostly, your posts are great and I love to read 'em etc..

On a lighter note (DT-content! Really!-)), here's the chart progression (though mostly this list is crowded with talk of chord progressions, heh) of DT's A Change of Seasons EP on the Finnish TOP-40 album list: first week: 32. 2nd week: 17. (if I can remember correctly. it was around that place) 3rd week: 26 or something...

So as I see it, at first devoted DT fans who knew of the fact that a new EP was about to be released bought it, plus those who accidentally saw it in music stores.. Then some more fans heard from it during the second week, and some may have saw it on the list program.. Thus it rose to the peak point, in the top-20. Then most of the real fans had already bought it and sales began to go down again. Pretty good chart performance anyways.. By the way, on the list program on TV they always played about 10 seconds from the Bohemian Rhapsody cover.. :-( I was hoping they'd play the climax from ACOS or something instead.

    1. Yes, it is generally bad form to greet another with a fart or other such ass-dispersed salutation.

    2. Since when do people use public mailing lists to carry out private arguments? This better involve all 1,080 of us in some way, otherwise take it elsewhere.

    3. What is a "firewall?"

    4. Rodman's a Chicago Bull? Why don't the other teams all just pack up and switch to golf of something??

    (note the double-arrows)

Is anyone on this list familiar with a band called "Arrested Development?" If I didn't speak English, I'd probably enjoy their music more, because I wouldn't be able to understand their interviews which display their views of white people, nor would I be able to understand their lyrics. UNFORTUNATELY, I DO speak English, and yet somehow I like their music.

What does this mean? "a true DT fan and someone who shares their progressive and open-minded ideals" is somewhat silly in the fact that most people like music for how it sounds, much in the same way they like ice cream flavors for how they taste. I like "Space-Dye Vest," but I think if Kevin Moore had a problem with a girl, tough shit, that's his problem, etc. (no offense, Airdance, there's a point here) I like the music, but that doesn't mean I sympathize with ANY of the band members, nor do I share their views. I disagree with Petrucci on his theories of liquid shadows and nervous flashlights, but I somehow still like "Under A Glass Moon." I share none of the ideals of Motley Crue, but guess what? I'm one HELL of a Motley Crue fan and no one can tell me differently.

What I'm saying is that in the case of Arrested Development, I'm far, far away from their mindset, yet I still like their music. Saying Trey has an obligation to uphold the ideals of Dream Theater because he's a fan of their music is not only silly, as I said before, but futile in proving or adding anything to your argument.

You know, Barbie said, "Math Class Is Tough" and it really pissed me off! So here I am on the appropriate mailing list to complain. DAMN that Barbie! She brainwashed an entire generation! It's a good thing Ytsejam is here or I would have nowhere to voice my opinions on that damn talking Barbie Doll.

    >"take a look at the prisons" is probably one of the most ignorant things I >have ever seen on this list...scratch that--it IS the most ignorant thing >I read here. And it does bother me that only one ofther Jammer has decided >to confront this poisoned thinking.

<<don't send me shit I do not want it send it to Peter.bashkoian@castle.shore.net>> ^ Actually, this ^ statement is THE most ignorant. A close Second would be the idea that James LaBrie is anything less than a magnificent singer, simply because it's repeated so often despite the fact that only a handful of vocalists can hold a candle to him. A close Third was Jimmy calling me a loser. :) But I digress.

I've thought about and confronted the issue many times, but there's something biting in the back of my mind (logic?) telling me that this isn't the place to discuss it... And what gives you the authority to assume that "only one other Jammer has confronted this poisoned thinking?" Had I at all, why would I voice it HERE? I mean, you moved out of my house over two years ago! How could you still know what I think? Wait a minute... You never lived with me in the first place... So how could you even...

    >I probably won't change any minds, here. And pardon me for the long post >(at least my sig. is short :)). Too bad it wan't a Petrucci solo that got >my fingers typing so zealously. BTW, I am part African-American, part >Italian and part Lithuanian. If anyone has a bone to pick, e-mail me >directly. ON WITH THE JAM!!!!!

Sorry, you drew a line on the Jam, I refuse to e-mail you privately because the issue is unfortunately no longer private. I'm part Sicilian, and part Estonian, but I'm not part African-American. I like oatmeal with cinnamon, and green eyes are a big turn-on for me. This information is necessary because, as stated before, this IS the Ytsejams, public forum for political debate, singles/dating mailing list, and culinary philosophy hotline.
