a couple of months ago a guy sent me a DAT clone of the 5/15/93 rocky
point palladium fm broadcast (dream theater of course). i was supposed
to send him back a clone of one of my shows, but the problem is that i
moved and lost his name and address.

if you are out there, or if you know who this guy may be, please email
me or post or something. i really need to get him his tape, and i dont
    know who he is...

it was sent to me on a panasonic DAT120, in case that narrows it down.
he taped it on a 59ES from onkyo reciever (i think)...

if you know of any ytsejammers in the providence area that match this

I used the word "stereotype," not "sterotype." Your view of black America
seems to be influenced by some sort of cultural bias. I know that most
Irish are not stupid drunks, but that was the cultural view at one time.

Maybe it's your hope that you will be given sight in the afterlife. I am
ecstatic that you are a true believer. For myself, I am agnostic. Before
you tell me that my soul is in trouble, stop. I don't want to hear it. Don't
assume that everybody reading this list is a devout Christian and will

Why don't you forgive OJ and pray for his soul? I see, you can

Not to re-open the previous, lengthy, discussion on the legality/morality of
boots, I have a question that may be of interest to others, especially
active songwriters and boot recorders on the JAM. In perusing the
lyrics/insert for ACOS, I notice that the copyright for ACOS, the
composition, is dated 1995. It would seem that previously recorded "boot"
versions would not be covered by any copyright restrictions, and would be in
the public domain, free to distribute, without concern for violating any
copyrights that apply to the "official version". Is this true or false? If
true, this would apply to all music that was recorded under another title or
    before legally copyrighted.

Also a new trivia question: In general terms, what is the graphic material
used for the background on the title side of the CD and the inside of the
cover insert of DT's 'Lie' European import single?

PS. I do like TLF very much, although I can understand why it was not
included on "Awake"; it just doesn't fit the mood of the album, and would,
    IMHO, fit better on IAW.
I don't dislike any DT songs, I just like some more than others.

It's true that a song called "Blue Oyster Cult" appeared on the '88 album
"Imaginos" by BOC. Just as an additional information: this song is just
a remake of the '74 classic "The Subhuman" from "Secret treaties".

Concerning the "Ronnie Scott's Uncovered" Video (or whatever it is called)
Don't get your expectations to high! I finally received information
from a source at eMpTyV europe. The main reason they never showed more
footage than the 15 seconds from "Winter": they messed the whole thing up.
Most of the time they got James' face respectivley a sheet with lyrics
in close-up. Plus lots of cuts of the audience...
So it's not really a concert-video at all.
Anyway I'm looking forward to _hearing_ the whole event!

Does anyone notice that behind Derek Sherinian's picture in the sleeve
of ACoS, that there is a white letter of some sort in the background? Is
this some kind of a marking they are trying to put on him, like "I'm a
rookie" or something? Does anyone know? I think it looks kinda cool, though.

Also, I'm getting more messages responding to the survey, but it's
still not enough! 33 so far :( It's better than 17, but not good enough!
Once again, I'll restate the questions for those of you who want to respond,
    but don't have them.

       Question #1:
Do you agree with the O.J. verdict?
(a simple Yes, No, Don't Know, or Who's O.J. will be sufficient.)

       Question #2:
Which Dream Theater album is your all-time favorite?
(I'll keep proclaiming it, mine is IMAGES & WORDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
(Still can't get tired of it, after about 1000 hours of listening!!!)

Please, if you haven't responded, do quickly because you've only got until
    Wednesday, October 11 to respond.

         E-mail me at :

    Hello jammers!
I've been on this mailing list for about a week now, so I decided it was=20
    time for my first post.
I got into DT about a year ago, when a friend of mine lent me I&W. I study=
    =20
music and play the keyboards and piano, so I was completely hit by their=20
songs, especially by the way they can play both hard rock and melodic tunes.=
    =20
So I ended up buying Awake, WDADU and now ACoS (almost all I can find here=
    =20
    in Italy...)
I really like the idea of DT INTERPS, because I think this way we could=20
analize better the songs and so appreciate them more. BTW, when I discovered=
    =20
DT, I was (and still am) into Van Halen, Extreme, Soundgarden, Alice in=20
    Chains and many more...
P.S. Am I the only Italian on the jam? It's just curiosity, I'm not a=20
patriot... even if I feel proud of JP's seemingly Italian surname and of=20
"Ora che ho perso la vista, ci vedo di pi=F9"... anyway, I confirm the exact=
    =20
translation is: "Now that I have lost my sight, I can see more"

    2) Just curious, how many 'jammers are minorities (I'm only asking about
those in the USA, who've been subjected to that circus)?
As a minority, i've got these uneasy feelings of vindication at
the verdict, while at the same time I feel strongly that OJ is guilty
(translation: none of us KNOW that he is guilty, no matter what
            you might think--you weren't there)
Maybe it's a reaction to the Rodney King (trial #1) circus, in
which a predominantly WHITE (if not all white jury, i don't
remember exactly) jury acquitted 4 WHITE officers of excessive
violence when there was a witness to their brutality (the camera).

    Daniel stopped--------

I can't believe nobody has mentioned this yet. But anyways, here's what
I think about that kid on the cover.

His face color is lighter than the rest of his body. Which is strange,
considering everybody's faces are usually darker than their body due to
more sun exposure. So, with that in mind, it's my belief that a head was
pasted on top of another kid's body. If you look under the head it would
be more than easy to do that, since there's so much black shadow under
there. As for the head.. Ok, when children are missing, the police do
computer renderings of how the kid might look like now compared to when
they were reported lost. Maybe they took Mike Portnoy's head and just
reversed that process. Either that or they just used an old photo of
Mike's head and pasted it on. :)

    Oh well.

Yes, I agree, but it's more closely linked to Catholicism...

BTW, you listen to Mortification? I used to have some of their
stuff, but most of it sounds like drival (especially compared to the
stuff I now listen to...Dream Theater, Queensryche, Fates, King's

    1. I rate ACOS a 10 compared to the other studio releases. James seems
to add a great deal more emotion to ACOS than to Awake or I&W.

    2. My favorite part starts at 0:00 and ends somewhere around 23:08. If
I were forced to narrow it down, it would be the two musical breaks in
Carpe Diem. The first is at 8:45, right between "...but there may
(lyric sheet says might) not be one" and "The words stuck in my mind."
Very climactic if you anticipate it coming. The other is (of course)
       at 9:47, after "...Good-bye."

    3. Favorite cover would be a tough call between Love Lies Bleeding and
the Big Medley. I think the Big Medley wins out due to the nice
transitions from one cover to the next.

Of course, these are TODAY's answers. Tomorrow I might have a different
opinion based on what mood I'm in. :)

    partial) 6:00 Drum Interperitation

0:00>Mike P. opens with two quick bass drum kicks and a triplet fill on his
    Octabon style drums.

0:01>(in 4/4) In the solo that follows he keeps sixteeth notes going on the
hi-hat throughout most of it. It's almost got a Latin feel to it.

0:09>Right here he puts 32nd notes on the hi-hat for a measure and then
    switches back to 16th's.

0:20>MP hits a big fill that alternates two 16th notes on the snare and two
    32nd notes on the kicks.

0:31>The time sig. switches to 6/8 and MP grooves along with the guitar part.

0:45>Time sig. back to 4\4 and the next four measures is pretty much four
fills that the first to of which start off with 16th note triplets on the
kick drums. This leads in to the intro to the first verse.

1:22> New groove that utilizes the "16th note triplet on the kicks followed
by a snare hit" fill that is used so much (and well) in MP's drumming.

1:30> Main groove comes back in 4\4, but an extra beat is added in the
    second measure.

2:11> Same as 0:31, but with vocals this time.

2:36>During Kevin's solo MP's beat stays locked in with the guitar part.

    2:55>Double time.

3:35>For-the-most-part-steady 16th's are kept on the hi-hat, and a nice
pattern is dubbed over on the pseudo-Octabons.

    And so on.....

It indicates that sales on Awake are very low and stores are trying to
ditch the album and at least break even (I think stores pay about $8 to the
record companies and distributors, but it may be less).

Poor sales are bad for the band. In fact, these stores might stop carrying
Awake (why sell an album you had a hard time getting rid of last month)
and this would be bad for the newer fans.

I just heard on the radio last night that John P is giving a guitar clinic in WInston-Salem, NC. The place is called the Music Loft (910) 721-1991, tix are $10 at the door or $8 in advance. That seems like a shitty thing to charge for something like this... Anyway, if there is any interest in going (Roanoke/Blacksburg area jammers or you road trippers) I'm still debating on whether or not to go. Damn school always gets in the way of [insert whatever here]!!! If somebody is interested let me know.

Also, I don't think it's a great mystery why some people don't want DT or other somewhat obscure bands to make it big. A lot of people like bands because of what they represent, not because of the music. Some people feel "special" when only a few people like "their" band, or if they liked "Band X" before so-and-so liked them...

Wouldnt it be great if DT decided to make a video of some kind for ACoS. They could put it out on videotape (concidering MTV wouldnt play it). It could be a mini-movie to bring out the imagery in the song. Just a thought.

Well... it had to happen... after how many people said that the new ACoS sounds strange... I finally got around to listening to the DoE version of ACoS again (well, on Subcon, but still the DoE version) and it sounds soooo strange to me after listening to the EP version for quite some time... I mean, it sounds too fast, and the lyrics seem strange... after I've finally gotten used to singing along with the new ones... although "Please don't go" still was right in place (thats the only line that I really miss from the new one)...
