I wanna know who the idiots are that keep quoting the entire list again and
again. I keep getting mail that I have already read before because someone
replied to the list. COME ON PEOPLE! When you write a message to the list,
do it as a new message. If you want to reply to something, cut and paste.

Hey, Eric. What are you afraid of ? Do you think DT will change
their music ? Don't worry. DT know themselves and what we want from them
perfectly. And Queensryche ? Didn't you listen to that wonderful "Promised

sometimes introduce I&W to my friends. DT must be more popular.

Great another digest, and another 50 complaints about the song on the EP...

    "We don't like Mike's snare!"
    "James doesn't scream enough!"
"I like the old lyrics better"
    "The production's bad"
    etc etc etc

Ya know, criticism is one thing, but this is fucking rediculous. Maybe someone
from the band will read this and decide to never do anything for the mailing
list again. It would be nice if people made it clear that the complaints are
small compared to their admiration for what was done for them (relatively few
have done this). It's also pathetic how everyone acts like they're a musical
genious and DT should go to them for suggestions in the future.

The instrumental section (The Inevitable Summer) _is_ better than DoE/Subcon...
there's more to life than playing fast, and the solos there now are much more
appropriate. Of course, I can see someone saying this exactly 3 months from
now, after all the "flaws" have bee rehashed 8 million times. Happened with
    Awake...

    Hello Jammers,

I am actually going to send several messages this time out,
instead of writing a big long one. Go fig...

Sorry, no Dream Theater content in this one...

Albums to check out by the following bands,

    Ozric Tentacles
    ---------------
I have Live Underslunky and it is a fantastic live effort. It tends to
be a bit heavier and more unrelentless then their studio work. Erpland
and Pungigant Effuslant (I murdered the spelling on this last one) are
excellent studio albums, their newer stuff seems to be Ozric Lite to me,
the two I just mentioned are older albums. And yes, their material is
really consistant, which means their sound doesn't evolve much over their
10 or so albums, even though they change band members more frequently
    than Yes.

    Yes

    ---
I feel sorry for the guy who can't stand Jon Anderson's voice, you really
only have a couple of options. Get Drama which is one of Yes' heavier
albums and has Trevor Horn on vocals, it is the only Yes album not
doesn't feature Anderson, and I really enjoy it. (but not because
Anderson is lacking, it has a much different feel than the other albums,
Machine Messiah, and Tempus Fugit are incredible). IMO the best albums
with Anderson (I like almost all of the 1970's albums) are Close to the
Edge and Fragile. They would be the easiest to get into, and they
usually win all the fan polls. Fragile has shorter pieces on it and a
bunch of "features" songs for each band member. Close to the Edge is a
compositional masterpiece, and IMO one of Yes' best songs.

Rush ---- IMO Stay away from Roll the Bones, and Counterparts. I also don't care for Hold Your Fire, but I like the rest of their albums. I would recommend Hemispheres for someone who is into Prog-Metal or Prog-rock, if you like more friendly songs, Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves are excellent and you are likely to know some tunes from listening to the radio. I have been a huge Rush fan for years, and sadly they are really starting to lose my interest, I hope I can get into their new album when it comes out next year.

Threshold --------- This band is phenominal! I really didn't get too much into them on the first listen, but they are excellent prog-metal. Livedelica and Psychedelicatessan are two of my favorite albums at the moment. They kinda have the interplaying 2 guitar-stuff (shit, I have to look over my music theory notes again, my descriptions are getting really vague) that Fate's Warning features but they are heavier. They also have more keyboards than Fate's. It is strange, but their keyboard player reminds me of the stuff that Derek may add to DT, this guy can solo, but he usually just augments the guitar players. The drummer is a good consistant metal drummer, maybe better than average but not a standout. I really want this band to take off, because I love their music.

    Yup, there are more.

There have been a *lot* of subscribes recently, and a lot of misdirected subscribe requests (you readers have seen only a portion of them, since the software is *usually* good at stripping out the requests before it gets sent out). The skipped digest numbers may have something to do with a bug that I've previously seen which Mike Jones's web page exercises...

    Hello Jammers,

I am setting up a WWW page for Unsigned and Indy Label Bands, I am creating links to WWW pages if a band has one and I also am going to include e-mail addresses, and snail mail addresses to get on their mailing lists. Any band that I hear and like who isn't on a major label is fair game for inclusion, I have a list of demos right now I am going to mail away for and evaluate. So if you have a band that you think I might like, let me know about your stuff. e-mail mbacko1@umbc.edu or visit my under heavy construction Homepage:

    http://www.gl.umbc.edu/~mbacko1/

I am also going to Netscape enhance the page once I get more information included.

If anyone knows contact e-mail or WWW page addresses for the following bands, please e-mail me, I'd like to get some information from them without having to go through snail mail:

Black Jester Curious Works Auditory Imagery Visionary Witsend Magellan Tempo Tantrum Braindance

I will also be housing the site of the official Inferno WWW page, I am starting to work with Jay Peele on this right now, more information is forthcoming after he finishes recording his OJ trial concept album, with special guest drummer MIKE PORTNOY!!!!!

OK, that last bit was an exaggeration... <grin> But Inferno is looking for a drummer.

FYI Inferno is a prog-metal band with diverse influences (from Jazz-fusion to prog-rock to heavy metal to etc...) who opened for Dream Theater during the Images and Words tour while they were in Florida.

The Band -------- Jay Peele: guitars, vocals, synths, Internet plugs Paul Lapinski: bass guitar Kier Whitacre: guitars, synths YOU?!?!?: drums

E-mail Jay Peele (jpeele@unf6.cis.unf.edu) if you are a serious drummer who is interested in making music with this band.

    Comments on the songs

Inferno reminds me a lot of Dream Theater and Rush at times with an intermingling of Fate's Warning, but the is really moving in their own direction on the Architect demo. (E-mail Jay Peele if you are interested in ordering) Lots of mystical lyrics (ala Rush and Dream Theater), they will be on the WWW page when I get it finished. It probably will be functional in a few weeks.

    Hello Jammer,

As far as this topic goes, I would love to see the boys make it big, (as long as they remember us <grin>). I don't listen to the radio much anymore (just a couple of jazz stations and a prog/alt free form station) and I never watch MTV, so if they even broke through I wouldn't really even know until I go to buy tickets for a concert, and find out they are playing RFK stadium or something. I am getting sick of them playing the "high end" clubs and I would like to see them take the jump to outdoor venues, and Theaters.

And them becoming popular really wouldn't change my opinion of them, good music to my ears doesn't become less good because it is popular.

*** Reply to note of 10/09/95 09:52 OK!!!! This is beginning to piss me off and the DT list isn't the place for it....and I will now ignore my own comment and continue!! Micheal C. continues to make comments about African Americans and their victime hood. Trey "agreed" with his comments (too bad, for I have come to understand Trey is a true DT fan and someone who shares thier progressive and open-minded ideals). James Garrett is the only person beside my self to comment on this thread. That makes me sick to my stomach.

Mike: "Look at the prison population and stop speaking out of ignorance." Maybe you should check your own head, Rush...er...Helms...er., Mike. Id doesn't start at the prison system. It starts more than 300 years ago with a thought and a premise that continues today in many caucasian mentalities. I'm not saying that caucasians are to blame for the problems in the black community...at least not wholly. The great majority of caucasians are supportive of the equality issue and helping those who've been mistreated of the centuries along. The great majority of balcks and others of color are hard working law abiding citizens. However, there is a disproportionate number of minorities locked out of economic, educational and civil comforts and it is not being done by a "minority" political structure. Adding to your confusion would be the media's representation of minorities. You get to see them in jail, singing, scoring touchdowns, etc. You don't get to see them writing programs, discovering elements, writing annual reports (which is what I do). "take a look at the prisons" is probably one of the most ignorant things I have ever seen on this list...scratch that--it IS the most ignorant thing I read here. And it does bother me that only one ofther Jammer has decided to confront this poisoned thinking.

I probably won't change any minds, here. And pardon me for the long post (at least my sig. is short :)). Too bad it wan't a Petrucci solo that got my fingers typing so zealously. BTW, I am part African-American, part Italian and part Lithuanian. If anyone has a bone to pick, e-mail me directly. ON WITH THE JAM!!!!!

In LaT it is definitely "By Demons be Driven" that is incorporated in the drum solo. And I tend to think it *is* Petrucci playing the guitar bit (backstage or something) because it's at an entirely different speed as the studio Pantera version. It is, in any case, definitely *not* "Fucking Hostile".

The Slayer thing that is occasionally done is the intro to "Raining Blood". I think this is probably *the* most well-known thrash metal drum thing. It is from the album "Reign in Blood".

    See ya.

"Have You Ever Noticed?" by Bafu Vai

Have you ever noticed the chorus-effect on James' voice for the entirety of "A Change Of Seasons?" It's there, and I think it sounds really cool. It gives his voice more of an edge, and there are no overdubs on the high parts due to the extra punch. Although, James is probably more used to DT material by now.

Have you ever noticed the uncanny similarity between the guitar riffs at 2:51 of "To Live Forever," 0:07 of "Innocence Faded," and 8:45 of "Scarred?" They're almost the same riff, and here I was thinking Petrucci was incapable of repeating himself. Nevertheless, if he doesn't start re-hashing old licks on the next album, I might start to believe he's in league with Satan. Either that or he's a descendant of Nicolo Paganini. Remember that red-eyed DiMarzio ad? Those weren't contacts...

(here are some Have You Ever Noticed's that YOU TOO can participate in!)

Have you ever noticed that at 8:47 of "Voices," you can sing a part from Queensryche's "Suite Sister Mary" perfectly? When James hits that long note("Deliver us from darkneeeeeeeesss"), sing the line, "Don't turn your back on my disgrace, the blood of Christ can't heal my wounds." Try it. It almost seems like Suite Sister Mary should be singing along with James.

Not enough Queensryche? Okay, well have you ever noticed how Ryche's "Eyes Of A Stranger" chorus fits into the intro of "Metropolis?" Go ahead, try this one aloud. Right before the whole band kicks in and it gets loud at 0:40, Petrucci does one last "dukka-dukka-dunk." Right on that last "dunk," start in with "And I raise my head and stare" from the EOAS pre-chorus. Then when the music explodes into full motion, sing the chorus from EOAS. Cool, huh? Even the drum pattern is the same.

    To Trey and Ben:

I am quite grateful that you have taken the DT Interpts (whatever) idea and began to work on it. I mentioned it about two weeks ago on the digest and was afraid it would die a horrible and silent death. I am glad it didn't. I am not a musician myself (not really, anyway), and my grasp of musical theory is really limited. But nonetheless I think it would be really cool to have a list of stuff to notice when listening to songs. Maybe I'll learn to recognise stuff... (Can't wait until "Learning to Live", "Metropolis" and "A Change of Seasons" become song of the week!

Everybody today seems to have this notion that any band that becomes popular sells out and makes different music to please the public. I think that this whole idea is bullshit. True, a band might choose to place the more commercial of its new songs on an album but it is the same guys writing music. You think they sit in a room and say, 'Hmm....What sound can I make with this instrument that I know people will like?' It is probably more like, I was listening to the radio the other day and I think this kind of thing might sound cool. Band's influences and tastes will change but not purposely. Also fans like the one that said DT should remain underground put tremendous pressure on a band to avoid having people think they sold out. This results in an opposite extreme. The band plays horrible useless drivel that isn't commercial but is also unmusical. I personally think people should leave bands alone and let them do what they want. If they make music you don't like, don't buy it. If a band truly does 'sellout' then don't listen to their music. There will be more bands in the future that will pick up where that band left off.

I agrees with this in part: I don't want to see DT become popular simply for the sake of doing so (i.e.sell out). But if the stuff they do suddenly became popular, what would be wrong with that? Would I&W, or Awake or whatever be worse albums if they topped the album charts? I don't think so.

So I did my interpretation of 6:00 based on the above. Now, I'm no lyric interpreter but I thought that, in this new light, 6:00 was easy to interpret. However, Innocence Faded was not. So I'll post my 6:00 bit and someone else do IF and send it :).

====HERE IT IS==== Six o'clock the siren kicks him from a dream --Dreaming about doing his own thing

Tries to shake it off but it just won't stop --Can't stop thinking about it

Can't find the strength but he's got promises to keep --Has a promise to the band

And wood to chop before he sleeps --? common musical expression is "chopping wood" which is usually a negative comment about just showing your chops w/o playing anything substantial. This line could be interpreted to mean that he has a gig to play and he'll play the part but he's not feeling it.

I may never get over but never's better than now I've got bases to cover --He's just not ready to leave yet. He has responsibilities to the band

He's in the parking lot just sitting in his car It's nine o'clock but he can't get out He lights a cigarette and turns the music down but just can't seem to shake that sound --The music is Dream Theater but he can't get the sound of his own thing out of his head

Once I thought I'd get over but it's too late for me now I've got bases to cover --? he thought he'd get over the idea of leaving the band to pursue his own music but it's too late now; he has to do it. NO. He has responsibilities

Melody walks through the door and memory flies out the window and nobody knows what they want 'til they finally let it all go --I think this is similar to "if you love someone set them free..." He has to let himself go to find what he wants

The pain inside coming outside --he's been keeping it in now he's letting it out

So many ways to drown a man So many ways to drag him down Some are fast and some take years and years Can't hear what he's saying when he's talking in his sleep Finally found the sound but he's in too deep --drowing in Dream Theater's music. Dragging him down. It's taken years and he's finally found the sound he's been looking for but he's in (to Dream Theater) too deep

I could never get over Is it too late for me now? Feel like blowing my cover --questions if it's too late to split the band. should he tell the guys?

Melody walks through the door and memory flies out the window and nobody knows what they want 'til they finally let it all go

But don't cut your losses too soon 'cause you'll only be cutting your throat --don't leave DT yet because it won't be good.

And answer a call while you still hear at all 'cause nobody will if you won't --but answer the call to your own sound while you have it because only you can do it. ====THANKS==== (sig omitted out of courtesy :)

Which just reminded me of something my friend, Joel (of the Joel Rivard Group - check out the home page and download the demo clips :) and I were talking about. It was how his writing is more straight-ahead. Fewer chords, 4/4 time, one tempo, but I tend to write (not always intentionally) a little more outside. odd-time riffs on some wierd scale (that Joel showed me). Multiple tempi within a tune. Then we said something about who we're listening to and he said that he listens to lots of stuff and I said (half jokingly) "I only like Dream Theater." There's nothing I don't like about them. DT kills me. Rush is still a favorite but DT is at least tied with Rush. I guess I just don't want to admit that I like DT more so I won't because Geddy Lee is why I play bass and he's still my primary influence. If I'm uninspired, playing-wise, I listen to Rush. If I'm uninspired, writing-wise, I listen to DT. ---------- > Agreed, unfortunately. You're not alone, AirDance. I saved mine too :) ---------- OK, this time I'm serious. I'd like to get a copy of the Kevin Moore demos. Is there anyone in the Massachusetts area willing to do it for me :)? Thanks.

Hello Jammers-- There's been a lot of talk recently about prog in general coming back and DT becoming mainstream. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'd love to get some of these grunge/alternative people off the charts and get some good musicians up there. I like a lot of grunge/alternative, but too much is too much. Just like in the late '80's when there were way too many hair bands. Anyway, everyone should check out their local music scene. I know it seems that there aren't any prog bands around, but were out there. Every halfway big city has a large music scene and you might be surprised at what you find. Give it a shot. You might be helping the next DT!!
