First off I'd like to state that I wrote each of these letters a long time
ago, my online service went bad, and now I'm sending them many days later.
So if you read any messages by "George" or "Deebor" in this jam they're many
    days old.

    Now for the message:

Yes, I have already posted on this song, but like all DT, you hear more with
    each listen.

I think the acoustic ending fits well as it ends on an uncertain note, which
reflects the hopeful lyrics at the end of the song. Also it cycles back and
mimics the acoustic intro, which is what the song is about. A cycle. Fall,
Winter, Spring, Summer. A father telling his son "Seize the Day" and the son
in turn tells his son the same. A very suitable ending indeed.

I also notices that toward the end many musical themes from much earlier on
were touched on again: the heavy guitar riff from the beginning, the
bass/drum melody( I think Mike plays it) from the beginning is repeated at
the beginning of the inevitable summer, and one bass riff from the beginning
is played again in the middle of the inevitable summer. Once again, a cycle
    of things.

The song gets even better with each listen.

    Thanks again, DT.

    George

Well I just got another friend into DT and it seems he is getting to be
almost as "into" DT as I am. Just the other night we both stayed up until
3:00 talking about the band for 3 hours. And it was a school night. Anyways
here's an interesting part of our conversation I thought I'd like to share
    with the jam.

We were talking about how Dream Theater's name and how it was a very fitting
    name.

DREAM: You know how each DT member's life story is very emotional? Kevin
    Moore's
depression over breaking up and uncertainty about leaving the band, John
Petruicci's father stricken with cancer. Everybody has these personal
things. Everybody has dreams. Mike Portnoy's dream of becoming a successful
musician, trying to get the most out of his life, trying to seize the day.
Which is what I think the "I was blinded by a paradise, Utopia high in the
sky. A dream that only drowned me. Deep in sorrow, wondering why." might be
about. Remember, he wrote this part before I&W came out, before the band had
    some success.
Musically their form of music is much like a dream, not your everyday 4/4 and
very complex. Like a dream, it should not make sense, yet it does. Just like
    a dream.

THEATER: A theater is where performances take place. They somehow take the
Dreams lyrically and musically to the theater level and they perform it.
     They make the impossible audible.

    Next interesting topic:

Remember the supposed hidden message on Awake within all the samples and
quotes? I believe I've figured it out. The message: It's all of the
confusion and emotion that led to Kev's departure.

VOICES: "I don't wanna be here, 'cause of my suffering..." "You got to know
    what you're dealing with"

MIRROR: "what are you doing? what are you doing?"

SPACE-DYE VEST:"This without a doubt is his biggest challenge ever he's gonna
have to face it. He's gotta try and get some help here you know no one can
say they know how he feels" The teenager leaving the lecturing parent's
house, as compared to Kev leaving the band. "If you're not in this house by
nine o'clock you'd better find some place to sleep."
"I can be on my own, get a job.."
"They say in Houston it's a 180 degrees" (He moved to somewhat the Houston
area. Who knows? maybe that's where he had initially planned to move.)
And his break-up with his girlfriend might have contributed to his departure
as well. "He's the sort that can't know anyone intimately, least of all a
    woman... He doesn't love you"

6:00: Basically the entire song is about Kev's leave, so the quotes fit
    appropriately.

So did I get it? Do I win anything?

    George

I don't agree with the Ytsejammer who was irked about fans calling and
supporting the band -- he said his enjoyment of EMPIRE was diminished
when "Silent Lucidity" became such a huge hit.

Uh, why? Did the music just suddenly drop out some notes? Did some
nefarious plot wipe out whole segments of the playback spectrum?
Sorry, but this is pretty silly. I liked EMPIRE from the moment I
heard the album, and when I saw that the "SL" video was destined for
greatness I thought "Cool, another band that DESERVES to make it, will
FINALLY make it." I was involved in the original call-ins for the
"Eyes of a Stranger" video (yes, back then MTV actually used those
calls for market research), and I was delighted QR was finally making
    the big time.

I have friends in bands ranging from just-starting-out (local bands
Narcolepsy, Early Warning, Bonedance, Moonwater, et al.) to the
been-there-and-got-screwed level (Mutha's Day Out) to the Grammy
Winning level (Metallica) to the had-a-great-career-come-see-us-at-
this-bar level (Blue Oyster Cult) . It pains me to see talent and
dedication, blood and sweat, go unrewarded.

Let's face it -- DT will probably never play stadium shows on their
own, no matter if every person on this list called their radio
stations and demanded airplay incessantly. There are a number of
reasons (how many Ytsejammers have friends who sniff derisively and
dismiss DT as another glam/hair band?), but they are not destined to
be another Van Halen, at least not here in the States.

It's important that we show our support, though, because Elektra is
watching. Album sales for AWAKE here have flattened out and every
little bit helps; besides, Dream Theater deserves whatever we can
do to help sell their CDs and convert our friends to being DT fans.
These are OUR friends in a sense; it's the least I can do help put
    bread on their tables.

for the guy who asked for Yes recommendations: my personal favorites are Relayer and Drama. Drama is pretty heavy for Yes and does NOT have Jon Anderson. i think that it's an excellent album with some interesting keyboard parts. Relayer has Patrick Moraz on keys and seems really complex, even more so than many of their other works. Close To The Edge is a safe bet and Fragile is pretty good. the really early stuff is kinda shaky and whether one likes Going for the One or Tormato really depends on personal taste. The Yes Album is very good if you're not looking for super cool keyboard parts, though i think it's the best job i've heard Tony Kaye do.

    Hi Jammers!!!!!

I just wanted to tell you that ACoS has had a pretty good responce in Finland. I was pretty surprised...first week it jumped up to 30, last week it was 17 and the second fastest deal on the list... dunno about this week, but it should be climbing! I can't recall seeing any DT record hit the list in Finland like this. COOL!!!!

    Keep on Jamming!!!

I have been out of town for the weekend, and am behind on 'jams, but I kind of doubt that this topic of conversation has been breached... Yes, this is another message about James LaBrie, but I won't mention again how he sings live. Anyways...

I was listening (still am) to I&W for the first time in a little while, and something hit me. Just a quick note: What I am saying about James isnt bad. I love how he sings...

To preface this, I'd like you to think about bands changing vocalists. Something I see a lot, is the new singer attempting to sound like the old singer, at least in the beginning, sorta to ease the transition. A prime example is Genesis. I haven't heard enough Genesis around the time of the change, but from what I know, it seems like Phil began trying to imitate Peter Gabriel, at least to some extent. Phil gradually went back to his more normal vocal style, either that or he just changed how he sings. Lou Grahm left Foreigner for a while, and the other guys put out a rather unknown album, _Unusual Heat_. In the beginning of the album, Johnny Edwards does his Lou Grahm impersonation, and the rest of the band basically trys to do what they could to sound like Foreigner, until later in the album, when the whole band actually did some kind of new stuff.

I could go on, but I can't think of any other examples at the moment, and that's not my point anyways. What I'm saying is, that when James came in on PMU, he sound almost Charlie-ish. It was also a bit noticable a little way into TTT. My hypothesis is this: James' more natural voice is what we hear on _Awake_. Granted, he does not have one set voice, but I'm thinking that his rougher vocals on _Awake_ are more like what he wants. I'm thinking that he was new for I&W and he didn't have as much pull and couldn't do everything the way he wanted. My geuss is that James would be most at home with the vocals specifically on _Caught in a Web_ since its the song that he's had the most lyrical work on. Then again, I may well be quite off.

People who have heard James pre-DT (ie Winter Rose, or whatever) or people who just have more of a clue than I do; Am I just completely off base here?

Also note that his only lyrical accreditation was for TTT with all of DT. Granted, on _Awake_ the only bit of lyric he was credited with was CiaW with Petrucci, but that is more input. Another random thing I'll point out it's common for one person to be the almost exclusive songwriter for a band, usually the singer. With DT we have the guitarist and keyboardist mainly doing lyrics, with contributions from everyone, and with the singer writing the absolute least. Then again, when i wake up and include WDADU in my counting, the vocalists together are tied with Myung and Portnoy... though maybe Mike should get a litte more than a one song credit for ACoS...

Hey jammers, I have some answers for the ACOS poll. 1. I would give it an 8. It's not perfect because of the annoying drum sound and some of the covers are not great (e.g. Led Z) 2. Section V (Another World). It is definitely the most emotional part of the song. It was hard to choose between IV (Darkest of Winters) and V, because I am also very much into instrumental music and I love the high-pitched distorted guitar sound in this part. 3. Love lies bleeding. Seldom have I heard such a great rock 'n roll song. You have to be really good to be able to play this. Later!

Actually, it's a representation of the Holy Trinity from the christian faith. I have an album by the band Mortification that also has it on the cover. They explain the meaning in the liner notes: The heart represents God, the thorns Jesus, and the flame is the Holy Spirit.

Here it is... ================================================ DREAM THEATER SUBCONSCIOUS 1. Eve (5:21) Recorded live at the Limelight, New York City on March 4, 1993. This is the only time known of (that has been recorded) where Kevin Moore played the samples from James Joyce's Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man in concert. 2. A Change of Seasons (19:19) This was also recorded at the New York City Limelight show on March 4, 1993 -- one of the few times it has been played live with LaBrie on vocals. This 20 minute epic is slated for release later this year. 3. O Holy Night (4:10) This is one of the demos done with ex-frontman Charlie Domi nici at the helm. This song was a part of a few live shows during the Images and Words "Music In Progress" tour, and a version featuring LaBrie is expected to be released in the future. 4. Carry That Weight/Golden Slumbers (6:13) A demo of a Beatles song, recorded in 1988 with Charlie Domi nici on vocals. I suspect they were drunk when they did this one, because there was some drunken chatter before it that I had to cut out. 5. Don't Look Past Me (6:21) This is one of the original Majesty demos, and in this instance, would-be vocalist John Hendricks is singing it. It's really quite a good song, and Petrucci works part of the end melody around to make an excellent instrumental ending reminiscent of what appeared later on the Awake track, "Innocence Faded." 6. Wanted: Dead or Alive (5:08) Originally John Petrucci did the instrumental track of this Bon Jovi cover tune for one of his guitar students, and left the tape sitting around. Ex-keyboardist Kevin Moore stole it, and his roommate Rich Kern (also featured on the Kevin Moore demos) decided to make it a bit spicier, and is the "other" voice heard in the background. 7. To Live Forever (acoustic) (4:54) This track was originally recorded as one of the four songs for James LaBrie's vocal audition. The others were; Take The Time, Metropolis, and Under A Glass Moon. 8. The Gorilla Session (excerpts) (2:59) A home-recorded solo session by Petrucci. At this early juncture in his career, John has really little songwriting ability and consequently this track wanders quite a lot. 9. Mission: Impossible Theme (1:17) This song also made it into the live set occasionally on the "Music In Progress" Tour. Z-Rock uses this studio outtake on the air sometimes. 10. The Back Pain Jam (5:07) When Mike Portnoy's back went out at the 10/25/94 show in Toronto, Canada, Derek Sherinian and John Petrucci banged out this rare, never again played jam while Mike sat backstage with a chiropractor. 11. The Awake Heavy Jam (3:51) This rare instrumental was played between "The Ones Who Help To Set The Sun" and "Innocence Faded" -- before they left the setlist on the "Awake" tour. 12. Experimental (1:23) Once thought to be another solo Petrucci instrumental, possibly of him warming up before a show, this song was actually written and performed by John Myung. It's source, or why he wrote it, remains even now shrouded in mystery. 13. Tears (3:09) This is a Rush cover song, recorded live at the famous "Uncov ered" concert at Ronnie Scotts in London, England on January 31, 1995 14. Winter (2:23) A Tori Amos cover, also played live at the January 31, 1995 Ronnie Scotts' "Uncovered" gig. 15. Mystery track Compiled and Produced by Mike Bahr, garion@indirect.com March 1995 ====================================================

I checked Pantera out a while ago, this band definitely has some major ups and downs. You're right that they can definitely groove, Vinnie Paul and Dimebag are good musicians for what they do. However, after the grooving part there are several things that annoy me about this band. One is obviously Phil Anselmo, his lyrics are sometimes disturbing. Check out "Good Friends and a Bottle of Pills" and you'll know what I mean. Also half the time when he sings it sounds like he's got a cat stuck in his throat. It's it's a shame too because he DOES have a good voice! Just listen to "Hollow" and you'll see how poor he treats his throat. Overall I can still get into the band if I want to hear some major riffage...also we don't "need some help" if we don't know what a part is. Also, how do you relate "Please don't go" to any pantera album?
